I stopped into this store, because I had a gift card. The woman who greeted me was friendly enough and the store carries a nice selection of Noro yarns, but otherwise mostly hand-dyed superwash products. Downgraded to 3 stars, because when I went to the till to check out, the woman moved my items aside for a couple in line behind me to purchase a gift card, which seemed odd and unprofessional. Spent 30+$ on some buttons. The staff and selection at Acorn Street Shop in the U-District are much better, and I will continue shopping there instead. read more

Omigosh - I am completely appalled at how rudely I was treated by the old woman running this shop this afternoon! I fully understand the COVID regulations, walked in masked and was about to use their hand sanitizer, when the woman snapped, "Use the hand sanitizer!" I replied, "I was about to." She should've just left it at that, but instead added, "Well, it didn't look like it!" I only moved beside it and reached over to the dispenser to let another customer in, as I was blocking the door. Her behavior was most off-putting. I was really looking forward to shopping here, as So Much Yarn was highly recommended to me by a fellow local knitter and regular customer of this business. I immediately told my friend about this incident and she will never shop here again either. It's really kind of sad, with businesses trying to rise up following the pandemic lockdown. I am known to spend hundreds of dollars on yarn at a time and was looking for yarn to make a sweater for my husband. I found some gorgeous hand-dyed merino wool at another yarn store, plus more yarn for a blanket; including a pattern and some supplies, I spent nearly $500...A loss to So Much Yarn is another shop's gain! It's really sad that they have a sign on their door about being an inclusive business. The grumpy old woman isn't doing this business any favors...I teach classes on customer service and there is always a nicer way to say things. She must be very unhappy with her life that she has to have a "drill sergeant"persona...that's sad. Knitting is such a tension relieving activity...very peaceful. That old woman caused stress. This is "Knitter's Husband" review!! This is just the most awesome yarn shop... hands down. I'm a "knitter's husband" so all the knitter's will know what that means.... I get dragged into just about any and every knitting store that my wonderful wife can find. Some are really a PITA for me - tiny, claustrophobic, weird choices of yarn and not pleasant for her, no place for me - a "non-knitter" to sit and just chill to give her lots of time to browse. "So Much Yarn" in this regard is "So Much Win"!! To start off, it's in Pike Place Market on 1st and Pike - CRAZY cool place to be in Seattle even for us, being locals (Port Orchard). The place is pretty huge as yarn stores go, and arranged/merchandised in a most beautiful way even for a non-knitter like me. Beautiful view of the pouring rain outside the windows to the West, over the market. There are two very comfy chairs right by the front doors - us "non-knitter companions" can sit, and happily surf the web or read or whatever - with the door to the market right there if you want to step out while the "knitter surfs the yarn" But best of all were the staff - Anne really wanted a project kit she found, and picked out some yarns... but the sales rep (GREAT person but we didn't get her name - works 2 days a week in her retirement) was absolutely AWESOME!!!! She worked in great detail with Anne to go over the project - and helped her choose a better combination of yarns - something in all my years in yarn shops I've never seen. She was AMAZING. We went from "well honey, I'm ready to go and I resisted the urge" to me saying "but wait! show me what you were looking at!". That's when we went back and the sales person really went deep into the pattern, the method, the required needles and skills - it was just awesome. We ended up leaving with about $96 in new yarn, a pattern, and a new set of #8 32" needles for Anne to build the kit. It was a win-win for me - my wife was happy, the sales person was happy, and I was happy. Truly one of the best yarn stores (of a great many) I've been to in a long time. My cousin got me hooked on knitting over the holidays...and to make it better, he got me hooked on knitting with the incomparable magnum yarn from So Much Yarn. The yarn itself is beautiful. You can see several different colors swirling around inside each skein. It's soft and WARM and such a beautiful texture. Im very much a novice knitter but with champagne taste and soon enough I found myself circling block after block trying to find parking so I could get my hands on a skein or two to take back with me to California. Long story short...beautiful products, extremely friendly and helpful service... but parking is terrible. If you're already downtown Seattle, it's not too bad. But I came just for this store and didn't realize it was actually a park of Pikes Place Market. If you're looking for street parking check out the Pay By Phone app and download the app ahead of time. It will ask you for the car type and license number. But I ended up using this app to park for my 15 min in yarn heaven. Also, if you live out of state like me, they offer to ship to you! read more

I used to love coming into this store when I lived in Washington, even thou I was never greeted nicely. We've moved out of Washington, but now when we visit I still enjoyed visiting this store until this last time. I was wring you incorrectly and over charged. I don't know if it was because I put my stuff down and told my husband to pay and he was not aware of the items I was getting or price. This is one of those reviews I'm reluctant to write because I don't want to let out the secret, but I should do this as a public service. The drop-in knitting classes are fantastic. I wanted to learn how to do two-color brioche but was intimidated. Betty didn't just help me learn it, she took the trouble to re-learn it on her own time to better teach me. Being able to learn a new technique (especially one that's a little obscure) with a teacher to walk you through it and help you fix mistakes is invaluable and (I think) saves you a whole lot of time and frustration. Whether you're new to knitting or want to learn something new, take a class here! And if you're shopping for yarn, they have an impressive selection. It can be hard to choose with so many options, but staff is very helpful and will help you pick out types, colors, size, etc.! read more

They have Anzula! They also carry special colorways dyed just for them from Knitted Wit! I first called this store to place a phone order, no tax since I'm out of state, Unfortunately they shipped me the correct colorway (limited edition 12th Man), but in the wrong weight. DOH! The owner was fantastic in trying to come up with a solution. In the end; I used up one skein and returned the second skein. They have a great selection of yarns in a fantastic array of colorways! I love local yarn stores. We are visiting Seattle for 4 days with friends, and I went out on my own to scope out this shop. I spent waaaay too much money because they had such great stuff. I bought local yarn, a few fun kits, a project bag, a travel yarn bowl bag and the cutest little snippers. The two ladies working could not have been sweeter or more helpful. I was very impressed. I've been stopping by this store occasionally for at least five years. And ever since Weaving Works closed their brick and mortar and moved out of Seattle, this has been my primary yarn store. It's walkable from my job, so I like how I can stop by when I'm heading home. I'm super happy with their selections -- it seems like they have a great curation of workhorse and luxury yarns. I personally would like to see even more local and PNW yarns, but I've always found something perfect for my oriect when I visit. I'm confused by some reviewers comments about the staff. I've found them all to be just fine. They always greet me and ask if I need help, but leave me alone when I tell them I'm good. Sometimes they might check in after I've been there a few minutes already, so maybe that's some people's beef? Personally, I like being left alone to browse better, and then if I need something I'll go find them. I tend to buy only what I need for the next project and don't often buy huge quantities on a regular basis, so the prices don't really bother me. Sure, maybe a skein of Brown Sheep NatureSpun is $1-2 more than the yarn shop out in the countryside of Oregon where my in-laws live, but that doesn't bother me much since we're in the city and I expect prices to be a bit higher. read more

I went to SMY yesterday while visiting family in Seattle and I can't say enough great things! They have a well-organized, wide variety of yarn in a room with a beautiful view of the water. The staff there are so friendly and answered my myriad of questions about yarn, pattern adjustments, skein pooling...they're very knowledgeable but don't have a snobby vibe about it, which happens often in the fiber community. Besides many many MANY different yarns, they have a nice selection of notions and accessories. I picked up a clover tape measure, pin, and drawstring project bag w/cheeky saying in addition to the skeins of yarn. SMY also has a great clearance section - both a 30% off and 50% off section were available when I was in the shop. I will definitely be back whenever I visit! Thanks SMY! read more

Despite the continually abysmal customer service, I've returned to this store on several occasions because of how close it was to my office. I've tried really hard to like this place because of the convenience, but the staff has never made me feel welcome. I asked about yarn for a pattern once, which I had pulled up on my phone, but the lady working there insisted that the outdated version they had in-store was the "right" one. When I tried to ask her about yarn weights she kept insisting that what I was looking for was the "wrong weight" when I was just asking her to direct me to where that particular weight was kept. She marched me over to their selection and in a condescending tone told me "See? This can't possibly be the right one." Uh. I was just wondering where things were around your tiny shop but thank you for that. After my last trip to this location where, upon selecting my yarn and heading to the register, the woman behind the counter told me "No. Other register." and I stood for a good five minutes since no one was at the second register (I was also the only one in the store) I decided that this was ridiculous service despite the convenience and I wouldn't be returning. One star because despite everything they do have a stamp card, which is easy to fill out thanks to the expensive prices. read more

I visited So Much Yarn on a Saturday afternoon. It is currently located between Pike and Pine on 1st street, closer to the north end of the block. It is only two blocks west of the Westlake tunnel station entrance. Walking in the shop, I was greeted within a minute or two as I was looking at needles on the wall. There were 2-3 people working at the time and maybe 1-2 other customers there. I gave myself a short tour of the shop before asking how the shop was arranged. The lightest weight Yarn is to the left of the door and it curves around to bulky/super bulky near the needles. They have a nice selection of yarn ranging from small-batch/hand-painted yarns from smaller dyers to Malabrigo and MadTosh to Cascade. They have one of those electric ball-winders, which I find fascinating. I picked up two skeins of yarn from Baah! and Frabjous Fibers & Wonderland Yarns along with a mini-skein pack of Knitted Wit. They told me about a men's knitting night on Wednesday nights, so I hope to maybe come back and see how that goes. read more

I was wandering around Pike Place Market this weekend shopping for gifts when I discovered So Much Yarn. I thought to myself, "Is this real life?!" As I walked in I braced myself for disappointment, thinking that maybe it was a sweater store, or a kitschy name for some kind of children's clothing store. But believe me, this store is far from disappointing! There is literally SO MUCH YARN! I was completely overwhelmed by the amazing selection of yarn. There was alpaca, and mink, beautiful colors, and lots and lots of reference books. (I love reference books) Feeling myself losing focus (I was shopping for gifts after all) I had to quickly gather myself and leave, but believe me I will be a regular at So Much Yarn! GO! Everything is overpriced...granted I'm sure the quality is amazing, but I'd rather not pay $20 for 1 skein of 100 yds of yarn. I was in the store for a solid 10-15 minutes and not once did the employees ask if I needed any help, attempt to make friendly small talk, or even acknowledge my existence. I was the only customer in the store for most of the time too! Would you believe me if I told you this place had SO. MUCH. YARN? Because they have tons. I work a couple of blocks away and really needed to find more of a particular yarn I had only bought one of from somewhere else (silly me, what was I thinking?!) Well, the stars aligned when I wandered into So Much Yarn and I was able to get 3 more of the same color and same lot number. A few notes on my experience: -the place is well marked by signs, easy to find! -the staff is super helpful and friendly, but not pushy. I knew exactly what I wanted, I was directed straight there, we celebrated my luck together. -they have classes. I've been teaching myself to crochet, but I really have no idea what I'm doing, but I learned I can make a scarf, or pretty much anything rectangular. I'd really like to try knitting, but the idea of teaching myself that too is quite daunting. I will be signing up for a beginners' knitting class in the near future : D -their prices are a little bit higher than other Seattle yarn stores I've been to, but they're in Pike's Place Market, so I can't really fault them for that. Years ago I lived in Belltown, just a mile away and was a regular at SMY. Owner Betty was a trooper in helping me navigate the project from Hades. Really love how the shop is situated in the charming Place Market. I really loved taking classes from Theresa with a cup of tea and that amazing view of Elliott Bay. Her yarns are to die for, including special finds like a hand spun merino in Seahawks colors or Blue Sky Baby Alpaca. Look forward to visiting next time I'm in Seattle. read more

I came in thinking that I'd stop by before grabbing lunch. I lost track of time and didn't even have time to get a proper lunch during my lunch break! (I did get tasty pierogies while walking back to work, though.) Everyone I spoke to (and I spoke to quite a few people) was incredibly helpful. I'm sure that it didn't help that I wasn't even sure what I was looking for, but everyone was very patient and did their best to put up with my rather odd questions. The selection is also quite nice. I saw quite a bit of Madelinetosh. There's also quite a bit of Cascade 220, both superwash and non-superwash. Those were the ones I came in looking for; other brands were well-represented as well. I also saw a wall of needles and another of notions, but I didn't look at those very closely. The space is airy and lovely. Note that the store isn't right on the street. It's inside a building behind a couple of other stores, between a toy store and a bagel store. I also didn't see any signage, but since I overheard that they recently moved, I'm guessing that that might change in the future. read more

I traveled to Washington from California to visit friends and I decided I needed to visit a yarn store. We have one where I live but customer service is poor so I don't shop there. This afternoon we drove up to Seattle to visit So Much Yarn. So Much Yarn was a delight! The shop lady was friendly, lightly chatty, and offered help without being pushy. The yarn selection was very nice with yarns ranging from beautiful silks, wools, and even some acrylic blends. Any color or texture you could want was present. The yarns are arranged around the store with super bulky on one side, working around to the thinnest yarns as you walk around the room. I fell in love with so many luscious yarns but finally choose 7 skeins (some from the sale rack) and I'm looking forward to finding the right projects for them. It's hard to find this much selection, even online. And let's be honest, feeling the for softness you can't do online. Plus I love supporting local stores. They have a large variety of colors, and not your typical Joann skeins too. This is the closest niche yarn store that I have in my area ( that has reasonable prices). I go here for all my yarn projects because I require a lot of off beat colors and so much yarn meets the task. Definitely will recommend this store to all my knitting/ crocheting friends :) read more
