Beyond disappointed with my experience at Blackstone Optometry. I was excited that there was an optometrist in my neighborhood that seemed to have good reviews but will definitely not be back. I visited because my eyes were so irritated that I could not wear my contacts from allergies. Dr. Roden first prescribed me drops that she prefaced as being expensive and possibly not covered by insurance. I expected them to be in the $50 range - they were well over $200. That would have been helpful to know up front. I called (twice) to ask to have this script substituted for a more affordable option. I finally received a return email with a new prescription and take it back to the pharmacy. Another $200 prescription! Seriously? My pharmacist is now working with me to try to find an alternative drop that is covered by insurance. They have called and faxed Dr. Roden with forms that would aid in this process with no response. Over a week after my pricey optometry apt and I am still unable to treat the problem I was seen for. Unbelievable. The only redeeming factor here is how pleasant the front office team is. Save yourself the stress - go somewhere else. read more

It had been a few years since my last eye exam so I went with Blackstone Optometry based on the positive Yelp reviews. Let me preface my review by saying I loved my last eye doctor in South Pasadena, but I moved and wanted a closer option. The staff and doctor were nice, but the process felt like one big sales pitch. The first thing they offer you is the Optomap, an additional service that is not included in most insurance plans...a fact he revealed after a five minute explanation of the gadget. No thanks, just the basics. Also, I hardly ever wear my glasses, so I don't need top-of-the-line lenses or coatings. But that's what I was given, and it wasn't clearly explained that I had cheaper options covered by my vision plan that I would have been equally as satisfied with. I picked out my frames (they had a nice selection), but nobody fitted the glasses, a process I remember from my last eye doctor's office. Thankfully they seem to fit on my face just fine. I do not plan on returning to Blackstone for next year's check-up. read more

I was looking up the phone number for this place to get a prescription faxed since I'm only covered for contacts OR glasses every two years (Wtf, right). I can't believe I haven't left a comment for this place! Anyway, the office is near my office so I picked it from Yelp a couple months ago. Yelp obviously did not let me down, 5 stars from all these glowing reviews all around, and 5 stars is the experience I got! The office is quite quaint and very well decorated and organized. The staff is very helpful and very patient, everything great and fantastic. With all the preliminary stuff that had to be done, I was very happy to have everything explained to me, and all costs explained up front, so that I did not get some crazy horrendous bill with values tacked next to jargon not within my vocabulary (it's happened before). Next, the doctor, Simon, is extremely sincere and very thorough in his examination, since my prescription is a little on the high end (I blame genetics). The machinery are all very up to date looking, compared to some other optometrists I've been too. He seems to also have the most cutting edge technology. As I mentioned before, since my insurance doesn't cover frames this year, I didn't really do a detailed look through the selection. I did a once over and everything looked really fashionable and modern. I'll be back yearly, definitely! Some day I'll get those frames I need... read more

How refreshing! Blackstone Optometry is seriously as good as it gets. After struggling with major eye problems, including dry and sensitive eyes, I came in frustrated by my inability to wear contacts comfortably. I don't like wearing glasses, and I don't want lasik. In the past doctors just had me try new contact lenses or eye drops, which never worked. I've visited three doctors in the past five years. No help. In fact, my last eye doctor was so frustrated, that he told me I had to find a new doctor! Dr. Cheng took the time to explain new options and food related eye health! After switching my contact solution to Clear Care, I can now wear my Proclear Compatibles all day long, with very minor discomfort at end of day. Before, I could only make it like 5-6 hours. Dr. Cheng seemed to actually care. He took a lot of time to talk with me as a new patient. He took time to help me. Dr. Cheng is patient, knowledgeable and sincere! I have to note that the staff is VERY friendly and accommodating as well. Overall, everything was just plain simple and easy. The office decor is nice and clean. They have the latest technology. They have machines I've never seen! Dr. Cheng is fairly young. I think this is why he is more open minded than my last three doctors. He knows the latest in eye care, and he uses the latest equipment. What's even cooler is that he is down to earth. I had a HORRIBLE time trying to get an appointment somewhere else, and then that other office called to cancel the day before my appointment. I was in a PANIC, had absolutely no contacts left, and ended up booking an appointment for the very next day at Blackstone online. I could not be happier with how things turned out!! The team at Blackstone were able to get me in SO soon, had an amazing sweet & complimentary staff, and clearly knowledgeable doctors. They were very upfront about optional extra exams that insurance wouldn't cover, and didn't pressure me to do the extras. They answered all my questions and took the time to explain everything to me. I put this off as long as I could. I hadn't gotten new glasses in about 6 years, and they. were. falling. apart. But, of course, my prescription had long since expired, so...what to do? Blackstone got back to me right away, and snuck me in for an appointment very quickly. And they are the nicest people ever! Entire staff was super friendly, walked me through everything I needed to know, and didn't try to push anything extra. Was in and outta there in no time, with prescription in hand, ready to rock. I was referred here through all the yelp reviews. I just moved here and needed new glasses because my frames broke my wife and I stopped by to replace the frames. The parking sucks and it was a total hassle circling the block to find parking. Total bummer but that's a common problem in LA. However circling the block was totally worth it because the customer service that Nancy provided was outstanding. Once we walked in she immediately greeted and assisted us even though the place was crowded. My wife was impressed how kind and professional Nancy was. I tried on several pairs and she was always patient and made us laugh the whole time. She was a total gem. The experience was surprisingly enjoyable. I already made referrals to my friends. I've been to quite a few optometrists over the years, and I can say that everyone at Blackstone Optometry is really nice. I have seen both doctors there, and they are very patient and well qualified. All the people in the front are also great. Dan is always very pleasant and a really nice guy. I found Blackstone when i was living in Los Feliz, but have since moved to Pasadena. I am a collector of prescription glasses...I own 35 pairs! Recently, I needed to get a vision test. I lost my optometrist so I had to find a new one so I was directed to Blackstone. I made an appointment for a vision test and also took my pair of "John Lennon" glasses that I love, that I hoped they would mark for me. Dr. Roden was incredible...it was the best eye exam I have ever had. She was so careful to make sure I was seeing the absolute best possible. The tech in the office who marked my glasses (sorry I cannot remember his name) was so gracious enough to not only mark them (knowing I was not going to get my prescription there) but took the time and patience to make sure my progressive was correctly marked in this very small frame to accommodate my unique prescription. Everyone was so friendly and extremely helpful. I shipped the frames off to get the new prescription and received them back and today I went over to Blackstone to personally thank them for not only the best prescription I have ever had but also for the great service that enabled my frames/lens to be made so correctly by my outside vendor. Now, here is the punchline. Today, I took three more of my frames for them to mark so I could send them off to get the new prescription and they were so happy to do it. I've been going for annual checkups to Blackstone Optometry for over five years, and even though I've since moved much further away, I have always found it well forth it to keep the continuity. The Doctors and staff are professional and friendly. Appointments always start on time. I'm no expert, but it seems like they do a great job of keeping up with and investing in top technology to make their practice better. They also have fantastic eyewear options but do not put on high pressure sales efforts if you just want the exams. I hope to keep going back for years more. read more

I cannot recommend Blackstone Optometry enough! Since near birth, I have had to see optometrists. And, of all the doctors I've had, Dr. Cheng tops the list. A patient of his for more than four years now, he is incredibly and consistently thorough. Given my vision issues are so nuanced (my eyeballs are not an easy fit for contacts), the process is rarely straightforward. He graciously works with me to figure out the best possible options. So too, his staff is incredible. Daniel, who helps with check-ins and conducting the various pre-exam eye tests, is probably the nicest person I've ever met. And Nancy, who works remotely helping with appointments, order facilitation, and the intricacies of insurance coverage, is a rock star every time I work with her too. This review is long overdue. I've been going to Blackstone for over a decade now and I have never once been disappointed by them. They are above and beyond the best group of optometrists I have ever encountered. Their staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They make you feel instantly welcome whenever you visit. Their tech is state of the thorough, detailed, and quick. All questions are answered, and if I need an immediate resupply, they send me home with a few complimentary dailies until my new lenses arrive in the mail. Also, their communication is top notch. I get plenty of advance notice ahead of my annual appointment. And there is zero hassle if I need to reschedule. I absolutely love their level of customer service. There's no one else like this out there. These guys get ten stars out of five. I will never go to another optometrist. I highly recommend Blackstone. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Fukunaga's for many years. I followed her to Blackstone Optometry a few years ago and just had my annual eye exam. Dr. Fukunaga is great as she is very thorough with the eye exam and takes time to explain what's going on with your vision. Tho I have moved out of the area and am no longer a patient of Blackstone Optometry, wanted to add my two cents about their awesome customer service and excellent patient care. Dr Fukunaga always dialed up my contact and glasses lens' prescriptions just perfectly. Never had an issue with poor fit or first-day-headaches from a prescription being too weak/strong. Great appointment reminder system -- they'll text/email you well in advance and give you a chance to update to your preferred date/time. During your pre-exam workup they will always ask if you want to have the back of your eyes photographed with that big ol' fancy machine, but I've never have felt pushed into doing it after politely declining. (FYI it costs extra/typically isnt covered by insurance.) Not a great selection of frames, but you are not obligated to purchase from their stock. One more thing-- they identified a billing error in my account FROM 2011, owned up to it, and sent me a reimbursement *5 yrs later*. How's that for integrity? read more

These reviews are 100% accurate! It was my first time there and it happened to be during the quarantine. I had Dr. Cheng and his assistant Dan. They are both so great and consistently ask consent about everything. The attention to detail and genuine patient care is amazing. Please go and check them out! Front desk: There were 3 front desk employees there and they were all great except for one that was a little condensing towards their follow workers (in front of the customers..) and towards other clients. I've been going to Dr. Simon Cheng for 14 years now! His exam prices are great and always stays updated with the latest contact brands. I highly recommend the screening optomap which is an additional $39. This screening looks at the optic nerves in the back of our eyes and can help indicate diabetes in the eye. I've been pairing this screening with my annual check up for 3 years now. It's great to build a history and make sure your eye is healthy. I love their office. Dan was so friendly and made me feel at ease through my first eye tests, Dr. Tran was great as well finishing up my exam and determining my new prescription (pretty cool they sent me the images of my retinol exam!), the front desk (didn't catch his name) was very helpful and patient showing me new frames within my budget. The office is small, they don't really have a great selection on frames and the parking is only limited to street parking with meters (also why they got 4 stars instead of 5) but Dan - the optical tech was so knowledgeable. He explained every procedure before he started. Dr. Cheng - was very patient and thorough. I am one that believes in using natural remedies to solve health problems and I was impressed that Dr. Cheng has that same beliefs. I have been going to Dr. Simon Cheng and team Blackstone Optometry for more than a decade. In that time, I've had three different medical doctors and four different dentists. And yet my loyalty to Blackstone Optometry has not wained. The reason is simple, they know what they are doing and they do it with expert precision. No matter how busy they are, they find time for you. They truly care about your visual health and continually follow up with you to see you are focused on the same. I recently changed jobs and was being considered for government work. I needed a certified vision test and new glasses prior to a medical assessment as a condition of employment. I literally had a window of a few days to get this done AND it was over the Thanksgiving holiday period. The crew at Blackstone Optometry moved mountains to fit me in and get me those glasses. There was a question of accuracy that came up during my the assessment which normally would have removed me from employment consideration. I advised Dr. Simon Cheng of this and he took it upon himself to draft a response complete with documentation to prove my eyes were healthy and forwarded this information on to the relevant parties. They had to have been impressed because they quickly reversed their decision and, as a result, I passed my medical evaluation completely. It is this type of personal attention that sets Blackstone Optometry above the rest. I can never thank the crew at Blackstone enough. I can only thank them with every fiber of my being. I haven't had an eye exam in a few years and the last time I went in for one it was a Lens Crafters. I wanted to find an optometrist that was not so corporate and stuffy and when I came to Yelp I found Blackstone. After I emailed in my appointment request they called within a few hours to schedule my appointment and I was able to get in less than a week later at 11:20 on a Wednesday. All the normal paperwork is emailed to you and filled out digitally, super quick and easy. I was able to get a free parking spot on the street in Los Feliz which was pretty exciting. I prepared to be there 90 minutes as they recommend but I was out in under an hour. I felt incredibly comfortable with Dr. Cheng, he was kind and thorough. His staff was friendly and welcoming as well. They automatically scheduled my appointment for next year and gave me a reminder card and let me know they'd email me when it got closer - so convenient! Getting in with a 7am appt. was fantastic. The staff was friendly, and the optometrist on staff, Simon Cheng found that my right eye could be a lot better than my current prescription. It's worth the additional cost to do business here over the "big chain" optometrists because they really can take the time to get it right. They even e-mailed my perscription directly to Gogosha Optique so I didn't have to! I took off a star because when I initially booked my appt, I got a reminder text two days in advance that showed a different time of day than I had booked which would not work for me, and when I called there was no explanation for the change and I had to wait another week to get re-booked. If my appt gets changed I should be notified before the change is made via telephone to confirm if the new time works, not calling in and checking because of an automated text. read more
