I've been coming here for decades. When it was located in the other unit, and I think even when it was called something else. There used to be an ajusshi back in the day & he retired recently, but he was always helping me & my mom. Then when I got married and dragged my husband to LA, I brought him here. ...now I have kids of my own and when my oldest daughter's summer camp mentioned that she said she couldn't see the board, without skipping a beat, I called Somi Optometry & made an appointment. Dr. Kim is a mom too so she was amazing with my oldest daughter. I was so scared my daughter would freak out, but Dr Somi did absolutely amazing with her and she was totally comfortable and super happy. Dr Kim didnt even say anything when my youngest was being loud in the exam room and running around (my husband took her outside with a promise of a lollipop) where most Dr's may have gotten upset and kicked us out, she spoke and paused between loud laughs and screams for her older sister lol. My was a little disappointed that she wasnt getting glasses bc she found ones she loves, but I am through the roof with happiness lol. Anyways, old or young, Dr. Somi is amazing and now I am proud to be bringing the third generation of my family to this family business. read more

Went to Dr. Somi Kim for an eye exam and contact lense fitting. Office: Spacious with friendly staff. They use an electronic medical record, easy to input your info. Exam: Dr. Kim took her time to do a thorough exam and time to explain the results of your exam as well as any questions you might have. I didn't feel rushed. Parking: There's a small free lot behind the building, but there were spots available when I went in the afternoon or there's street parking. Extra: I had called to add to the prescription a trial lens Dr. Kim gave me and liked. She was really prompt on getting the new prescription sent over to me. Been jumping around optometrists since my last doc moved their shop out of koreatown 6 years ago. My friend told me he came here for everything so I gave it a try. Dr. Kim is great--personable and very thorough. Her store has a cool selection of eyewear. Then the pandemic happened. I was slow to return to checking out my eyeballs and got lazy and went to one that was 3 blocks from my home. Wow I will never do that again lol. In 2023 I needed a checkup and totally forgot where she was and had to ask my friend who lives in Chicago now her 311. He still goes to her even though he's in Chicago lol. Dr Kim was super sweet and so patient. Best of all she is covered by my insurance! The contacts I normally wear got discontinued so I had to get a prescription for a new pair. Dr Kim was super patient in explaining all the different options and gave me samples. I ordered my contacts and they were backordered. But when I came back not only did I get my contacts but some free samples of the same contacts with instructions to try those out first to make sure they would be a good fit. I saw a lot of bad reviews about the guys working in the front but I had nothing but pleasant experiences with them. Parking is easy with both an underground lot and a lot right behind the structure. Love their staff, from the Dr to the receptionist. If you have VSP vision insurance, this is the place to go to. Place is small and the plaza it's located in is clearly a dying plaza, but the plus side is there is always plenty of parking. Their receptionist is so rude, I called to confirm if they accept my insurance to not make the drive and be disappointed. The woman I spoke to said they didn't accept my insurance and then they did. I asked to run my insurance since she seemed unsure. At first I was glad to find this pleasant optometry office close to home. Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and thorough in explaining everything about eye care. Here's the problem: After the eye exam she gave me, my long-range vision with my progressive lenses is blurrier than with no glasses at all. And her staff seems utterly incapable of fixing the problem, even after four follow-up visits. Last week when I told the older staff member the lenses were still faulty, he told me I'd "get used to them." Now I'm stuck with a very expensive pair of "readers" I can't use outdoors or while driving. I had a 6 pm appointment for a second eye exam this evening, but after being ignored in the waiting area until 6:20, I decided to cut my losses and move on. read more

I called at 5:15pm and made a last minute appt for 5:30pm since someone had cancelled. They told me to come now so I did and got there around 5:30pm. The man immediately took my information. About 15 mins later, he apologized for the wait and let me know she was running behind. I waited until 6:25pm before I had to cancel because I had an appointment for something else at 6:30pm. He told me she will be ready promptly after she cleans the room and the appointment will last 20-30mins. I couldn't because I would miss my next appointment. He said I can reschedule for 1 week later. The younger man was kind to me the whole time and I would've waited if I didn't have the other appointment. I heard good things about the optometrist from other people so I'm willing to wait in the future but have to make time for it. Maybe she should consider having less patients because several other people have noted the 30min-1hr delay as well. I'm sure I will update the review with more stars when I actually get to meet her. Been coming to Somi Kim for a few years now. It's hard finding a Korean American optometrist that you can communicated in English! Somi is so well mannered, her eye exams are through and efficient, and she doesn't rush you in any way. Always there to answer any questions and won't upsell you with anything. The outside staff are also great! They take their time finding you glasses that fit your face and unlike other optometrists in ktown, they don't rush you and you don't feel uncomfortable. After my exam I wanted to look at some glasses. He said... I see you have on Warby Parker, I don't know if we have anything within that price range since we have a lot high end brands. I mentioned that I really liked these Ray-Bans I wore before and he interrupted me and said ... Ray-Bans are our cheapest brand here. When I asked if they had other glasses to accommodate the Asian nose he kept bringing up how there aren't many in my price range even though I never mentioned my budget. I've come to this optometrist a few times over the last 5 or 6 years. Maybe longer and I've never had a situation happen like what happened today. Apparently, because your prescription can change within 3 months, even if they mess up your prescription, they will still charge you another $80 to take a new exam. I've never heard that at any other doctor's office. Apparently it's common knowledge and I don't know any other person that knows that information either. It's not listed anywhere or on anything It's just some kind of thing that they tell you after you try to go and get your prescription fixed. Contacts are not cheap, it may take a while for some people to be able to afford them. Their practice is discriminatory and while they eventually offered $20 to come and redo it as a courtesy, it would have been better if it wasn't said after making someone feel like they were the problem in the first place instead of the doctor who made the original mistake. Do not come here if you have to pay out of pocket. There are much better doctors that will relay all the information necessary before you leave the establishment. During a time where basic needs are hard to come by for some this place just isn't it. read more

The nicest staff members ever. Ji is the most patient guy ever - offering to help me find the perfect pair of frames for my ever-so-specific tastes. He speaks super gently, and reminds me of a cuddly teddy bear haha! Once, I exclaimed loudly "whoa, these glasses are so tiny on my face. Do you have any larger ones that would fit my giant head?" and he replied "You don't have a giant head! Trust me, some guy came in before you and he had a giant head. He said the same thing as you did, but I just stood quietly and didn't say anything ... because he did! But you...you don't have a giant head." Anyways, they accept VSP here, so my glasses (originally $220) costed me only $20. The arrived within a week. There's always a huge variety of frames to choose from here. Excellent experience!! I was really pleased with my visit here. The staff was very friendly and patient from the beginning to the end. The doctor was very well mannered and friendly. She explained to me every process step by step and told me what she say as she performed each test. She was very great at explaining what exactly she saw and gave her recommendations but didn't push anything on me either. I enjoyed how the staff showed me recommended lenses based off what I was looking at but was not pushy and gave me all the time I needed to try on the lenses until I found the perfect one. After I saw a 1-star review, I was thinking, how sad - times are hard and we should be a bit more understanding. Child!!! That girl was right to make that review. I didn't even get a chance to get an eye exam til I got up and left bc of the terrible attitude the guy had that was taking my info. Should've known better after the first 2 encounters with him prior to in-person experience. Bad energy all around. We're living in an unprecedented time, kindness goes both ways. On top of that, emotions are high bc of this damn election we're dealing with. I can understand if he's stressed but shit, aren't we all?! If you hate your job so much, trust, there's a lot of unfortunate people who've lost their job due to Covid, that would love to take your place. My suggestion to the owner: 1. Highly recommend sitting down with your employee and walk him through his demeanor and how he addresses people. Maybe he needs some PTO.. maybe he needs some mental health support - we're not living in a "normal" time. Maybe he needs a hug. Whatever it is, give him the support he needs before you start losing more clients left and right. 2. Not sure if you have control over updating your business hours but your Wednesday hours are incorrect. Might want to look into that read more
