I don't mind taking my family out for dinner, but I do expect to get my moneys worth.

Ken O.

OVER PRICED, $65- Sticky Tamarind Steak. It was EXCELLENT, however there was enough meat for a 10 year old. There was twice as much Sweet Potato than there was meat. My sever Lilly was very friendly until I responded HONESTLY to her question, "How was everything?" I did respond politely.... I did expect a Manager to come to the table but that did not happen. I guess it was My Fault for ordering a $65 skirt steak without knowing the size (no more than 6 ounces). I did ask my waitress if it was a big piece of meat; Her response was, "It is for me" or something like that. I would say a fair PRICE for this DISH would me $40. It was tasty but not certainly not worth $65; Unless it had double the meat. We sat outdoors, which was very nice and will certainly be back to do it again! I would like to see a reply from management, but we will see if I get one.

I truly don't understand this place after eating here a few times. It is always packed ... the parking lot literally looks like a shopping mall with cars parked along the street. It has almost a cult-like following after reading the reviews. In my experience, everything I have ordered was okay ... but nothing incredibly amazing vs. the price. I have not seen higher menu prices outside of Manhattan. Two sandwiches and one beer came to $78 after the tip. You read that correctly ... a burger with fries, a pulled pork sandwich with side salad and the cheapest draft beer on the menu ... $78!!! The wings/tenders were over $20 ... in fact, other than the side upgrades, nothing on the menu was under $20. If you are charging $25 for a 'diner burger' and fries, it better be an amazing burger. Mine was no better than Five Guys and less tasty than a Shake Shack. Given the prices, one wouldn't expect that you'd get potato chips with your burger. In order to get French fries ... it's a $5 upcharge. A side salad is $9. I don't mind paying more for quality ... and Blackie's quality is probably high as their meats, vegetables, potatoes, etc. all list the origin place. However high the quality is, for me anyways, the food doesn't seem much different taste-wise, than anywhere else that is much less expensive. Having said that, the portions are huge. The nachos look like they are meant for an entire table and everything is served on metal cafeteria-style trays. Good for them though because the place is huge and always packed. The crowd here is very typical 'Rhode Island'. Expect to see a lot of anchor tattoos, lifted Jeeps with no doors in the parking lot, young 20 - 40 year old crowd who probably played high school football or baseball back in the day and still enjoy telling stories about it. There are no shortage of cross-fitters here. There is a nice buzz of conversation and energy ... but this is not the place you want to go if you don't like crowds. Inside is weird. The walls are painted black and the chairs/tables look like something in a boutique hotel. It looks a little more like a corporate hotel lobby or wedding function hall vs. a restaurant ... especially given the typical crowd. This is not the sports bar it appears to be on the outside. Overall, my 3-stars may seem harsh. But that's an average score ... and honestly, my food has always been average. Maybe I need to try the pizza. If you have deep pockets and like huge portions, you probably won't be disappointed in this place. The service is great, although 2 people working a packed bar, you will wait a bit if you need anything. Also, I came to watch the big game and for some reason they hung pendant lights which dangle down from around the bar. While they make everyone look better, the TVs are blocked by the lights. Very odd.

Crostini & Ricotta and Cheeseburger Rangoons

Greeted and seated by smiling faces immediately. The food and drinks were very good. I love the cheeseburger Rangoon, the ricotta bread dip was good but the bread was a tad too crispy and the cornbread was tasty. The pickle pizza was okay but I'm not a huge pickle fan The girls said the turkey was delicious. It wasn't too loud or overcrowded, we could move freely and talk in a normal voice.

Ok we had been driving by for months, we had just moved to the area and one night we were out and wanted to stop in. We were hungry after a super long day. We ordered EVERYTHING, Literally... Hubby wanted steak, son wanted wings, pizza, other things and I had on my Fat girl eyes and just wanted all the things. I was torn on the wing flavor and the waitress (who was a F***ing riot by the way, I Love her)! suggested the maple, I didnt Love love them, but they were good. The pizza was ok, could have been cooked like a moment more. The Shroomy grilled cheese for me was the best thing on the menu. Hubby said the steak was just meh, but he is fancy, we take his reviews with a grain of salt, LOL... The decor and vibe of the place was great! Its big, misleading from the street, but there are rooms, and hallways, and more rooms! Super cute, but it does get busy, Make a reservation. Get the Brie Crostini, I remember that being great, and now Im drooling!

Food/Drinks: The food at this location is still very delicious. I am addicted to their carnitas bowl, which is honestly an item they should have all year, but they usually only offer it seasonally during the summer. It's honestly one of my favorite dishes ever, and at this point I go back just to get that. The drinks are still great as well! Location: This location continues to be perfect for a day out or a special occasion, and it's also great to go with your family. It gives more of a business-casual vibe, and there are different types of people and some dress up and some dress casually. They do have private parking, and they also offer valet service. Service: I have given it them 5 in the past to a 4 now. The service is okay. I'm doing an updated review because I've honestly had great experiences when I do takeout, but I've eaten here at least three more times inside the restaurant. Although some of the waiters are nice and helpful, some haven't been the most friendly, like the last time we went. Our waitress came off a bit rude at times. The wait time is actually insane, which I think is the biggest issue. If I ever come back it will honestly be to pick up a carnitas bowl to go. Every single time we've eaten inside the restaurant, the wait time has been over 45 minutes to an hour, and the last time some of the food took over an hour to come to our table, which was extremely disappointing. The restaurant didn't even seem as full and we asked our waitress and she was a bit rude about it which threw us off. I'd do take out for sure but I may think twice before coming in person. I feel that if they fix this, this restaurant can thrive even more than it already is.

Food was delicious. Great flavor in the sauces. The ambiance is chill. Family friendly. The service was excellent.

I'll always love how good a gluten free person can eat here. I went in January and I can't remember what the sandwich I got was called, but it was amazing! The buffalo chicken dip is always great and a good size for sharing as an appetizer. Service was so friendly and made sure my gluten free food was safe.

Eric M.

I'm still dreaming about this buffalo dip. Sat bar side with a friend of mine got a couple of drinks and this dip. Probably the best Buffalo chicken dip I've ever had (yes your mom and aunt's don't compare to this). Creamy, gooey full of chicken and some kick as it should be! Been to blackies many times as a Bryant student and this place doesn't disappoint. Staff is always friendly and kind, menu is always creative and it looks so aesthetically pleasing. Whether you are visiting Bryant to catch a game or looking for a date night spot. Blackies is the way to go!

Melissa V.

Our second visit and everything was delicious as usual! A little pricey, but worth the splurge for excellent food.

chicken sandwich, turkey club, pulled pork sliders

I just attended a grad party here and was blown away by the quality of the food and service. Typically it's hard to pull off a successful buffet spread while keeping everything PIPING hot and they did so with ease. The grad herself said that the staff was super helpful in curating a menu. They even printed it out with her name and placed it on the bar. The buffalo chicken dip, bruschetta, burger rangoons, pizzas, and ANY of their sliders/sammies were so good. In terms of drinks I got the Blackie's pair. It was so good that I got another one immediately after. The bartender working was a sweetheart as well! Would love to visit again!

Arthur S.

We went in for pizza at 3 PM to avoid the dinner crowd because Blackie's can get busy quickly. The service was excellent, we were seated immediately and our water classes were always full. I ordered the Zab's Wicked Hot Cousin without the hot honey. The dough is a light, fluffy, thin crust that has nice pull to it as you bite it. If you like lots of cheese and topping, this is it. Very good pepperoni and the fermented chilies were a perfect match for me. I usually order cherry peppers on my pizza, but these were way better...no stems with all the flavor. The cheese was super stretchy and full of flavor with all of that cup and Charred pepperoni. I was lucky enough to take 2 slices home and they reheated perfectly! Can't wait till next time.

Hangar steak, mashed potatoes, honey glazed carrots with fried onions

Kylie K.

Arrived following noon service to a packed parking lot and packed dining room. Sat at a high top and immediately noticed no purse hangers, wobbly table, mild draft. We had at least 4 menus to look through...and no one announced the specials (they did at the family tables next to us) the steak was cooked well, way too many fried onions, and the demi glaze tasted like watered down bbq sauce. The fish sandwich was good except the tomato added unnecessary acid and the bun fell apart (too much aioli or old bread). Our server was pleasant and agreed purse hooks are a must! He fixed the table wobble and left us in peace to eat. We had to pack our own to go box, no dessert offered.

The gleaming facade of Blackie's stands out on the George Washington Highway, all sleek charcoal gray and punchy lime green accents. This is not your corner pizza joint with fluorescent lighting and sticky laminate tables. Blackie's wants you to know right away that they're playing a different game. Inside, the aesthetic continues its war on mediocrity. Stone walls meet distressed wood paneling. Artful lighting casting just the right glow over marble tabletops and modern, artsy, seating. The place feels expensive and calculated, with considered design where every weathered plank and pendant light has been placed with Instagram worthiness in mind. The dining room fills up fast. Locals know something tourists don't. Two fancy Italian pizza ovens loom large behind us in the beautiful dining area with the equally fancy bar in front of us. Their pepperoni pizza arrives on a wooden board, a 14-inch circle of potential greatness. First visual impression: beautiful. The kind of pie that food photographers wish for. But we eat with our mouths, not our eyes. The first slice pulled away from the pie reveals a crust that defies expectation. It's remarkably light, almost airy, overwhelmed toward the center, with a structure that grows more substantial as you reach the perimeter. The flavor is distinctive, pleasant, with an agreeable chew that speaks of proper fermentation and good flour. This is a seriously considered pizza dough. Someone in the kitchen understands bread. But then comes the problem. The sauce, applied with such restraint that you might question whether they ran out halfway through prep, gets absolutely bulldozed by a tsunami of cheese. This dairy avalanche dominates every bite, turning what should be a symphony into a one-note song. The pepperoni, while abundant, contributes almost nothing to the equation. It exists merely as decoration, its flavor lost beneath the blanket of mozzarella excess. The service at Blackie's runs with remarkable precision. Water glasses never empty. Questions find immediate answers. Needs are anticipated rather than responded to. This is professional hospitality at work, the kind that makes you feel simultaneously cared for and not spied on. In the end, Blackie's aesthetic speaks of culinary ambition and careful planning. The service is ready to support a serious dining destination. But the pizza, at least, falls victim to the most basic of errors: imbalance. Too much of one thing, not enough of the others. Would I return? Absolutely. But I'd veer toward their burgers and comfort food rather than the pizza. It's a great spot that deserves a better outcome than this pie provided.

Sat at the bar/Decent service... Would have been 5 stars if the bartenders were more attentive to the essentials - condiments, etc... But nothing much to compare about. Not impressed. I ordered take- out because I know it gets packed there which is great for them so I never mind take-out. I ordered a steak and cheese on a GF torpedo roll with fries. 23$ ?! Ok fine, I don't mind paying for awesome food. So, I open it up and it's on a wrap, probably corn because I said gluten free and I literally could have eaten it in 4 bites. Reminded me of egg rolls. For 23$ , come on Blackie's. And I'm pretty sure I was charged extra for the gluten free torpedo roll which I didn't get probably because it wouldn't even fill up anything close to a roll . The steak was good from the four bites I tasted but no way was that portion size worth it. read more

Love love love this spot! Their new location is absolutely beautiful! The atmosphere is modern but unique, you can make it a casual day out for lunch or a formal dinner spot. We started off with their smoked brisket popper dip which was amazing. The chips and crackers served with it are clearly freshly made. For entrees we had the green veggie ramen and the carnitas tacos. Both were so delicious! The ramen and the broth it was in were the best I've ever had, I will for sure be back for that! Service was great as well. We sat at the pizza bar and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Everyone there seems very happy and take pride in what the do and serve. This was my first time at blackies. My cousin is a student at Bryant university and we ended up finding this place. We came to the conclusion that the menu was really wordy. The explanations of the items could have been summarized and not as lengthy. Our server was very nice but kind of Un attentive. The menu was also extremely overpriced. Wings were icky. Overall, not a great impression. read more

DO NOT DRIVE BY THIS RESTAURANT! Incredible beer list. Great menu. Huge portions. We drove up on a weekday afternoon and the place was half full. This was obviously a good sign especially since it was mid-afternoon and not even lunch time. Started with Cisco Brewing Company Grey Lady and the Two Roads Brewing Company Lil Heaven Session IPA. Both were perfect for a sunny, summer afternoon. Lunch decisions were much more difficult. I kept reading more and more and I wanted everything. We decided on three different sandwiches and said we would all share bites to the other. I had the Pickeluffagus and it was one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've ever eaten. It is served grilled cheese style with smoked pulled pork, dill cheddar cheese and crispy homemade potato chips (inside). The sandwich came with fries. As mentioned above, portions are HUGE. I could have shared the sandwich. We also had the smoked turkey club and the cubano. Again, ridiculously good. Service was friendly, just slightly slower than expected. My drink was empty for a few minutes before being asked for another. I will definitely return when in the area visiting family. read more

Such great food, such wonderful service! Wish I could have remembered over servers name but she was on point with everything. We asked her to bring out some of the wings sauces to sample and she got right on it. She catered to everything we needed and asked for. She also made some good recommendations. Food was delicious and full of flavor as always. The best part of the pulled pork nachos is that EVERY layer is full of something whether it be the pulled pork or the ooey gooey cheese that accompanied it. You can tell everything is freshly made and made with lots of love. We also enjoyed their teriyaki wings. The wings themselves were loaded with meat. The sauce was fantastic. We did ask to sample the root beer hoisin sauce but preferred the teriyaki much better. Lastly, we enjoyed their brisket and bacon tacos. Holy moly! The flavor was beyond explainable! The brisket was moist and tender, the cole Slaw was crunchy and delicious and the best part were the fries that they added ooo and the Mac and cheese sauce that was drizzled on top! Gotta try em :) thanks for another fantastic delicious meal that we will be still talking about weeks from now! read more

Had a great time tonight! Was my very first time there and my boyfriend's second time. We enjoyed every second of it. Most importantly the great service we received from our lovely server Rae. She was indeed amazing. Never missed a beat. Was right on with our drinks, food, refills and friendly service. I ordered the mojito and it was yummy. Our app was the Meze what a great combo of things, def recommend it as a starter. I decided on making my own burger which I loved every bite. The choices were plenty and I was super excited to have the Mac cheese sauce and Cibatta as an option. Again we were very pleased. The host were very accommodating they sat us by the bathroom at first but we wanted more privacy and they were quick to accommodate us. Also my burger didn't have the onions I ordered and the server was quick to bring it and made sure we were happy during our entire experience. I say try the place and ask for Rae she's awesome!!!! read more

Absolutely love this place and finally had a chance to stop by their new location. Right when you walk in it is as if you are stepping into a five star resort and instantly greeted by the front desk and one of the owners. Our reservation was right on time and all the precautions with COVID were implemented very well done. From the front we were escorted to one of four different areas of dining! I could not believe the amount of amazing open space inside. Each room offered a different feel of environment and left my eager to return to sit and try out a different environment. Our server was on her A game and always made sure our drinks were full and kept making sure if there was anything we needed to just ask her. I can't specifically remember the names of the entree we ordered but I got the tacos which were to die for, and believe me two with a side is plenty because these bad boys are packed with meat and other delicious flavors that all paired together magically. My mom then got a noodle dish, which I don't really enjoy noodles, but these were so different and not your regular noodle dish. There were a lot of different flavors and garnishes going on; highly recommend! Overall I love this place and wish I was still living in Rhode Island to enjoy it more. I wish Angie and Jeanine nothing but the best, I remember were it all began and I could not be happier for y'all. Much love and luck to y'all! read more

My friends and I stopped here Sunday after a day of drinking in the sun. Let's just say, I was so happy with the service, the cocktails and the food! I ended up ordering the Shrimp Pad Thai Salad which was so refreshing and delicious on a hot summer day. My friends ordered a gluten free breakfast burger and the steak cantina dish (I believe that is what it was called). Both of my friends ate the ENTIRE dish, so you could say they enjoyed it to say the least. The bartender was hilarious and very easy going. We had an event for my daughter here, a Baptism celebration...I had about 25 people and rented the private room. It was AMAZING! Everyone raved about how beautiful the room was, how delicious the food was and how attentive the service was! Let me tell you, we've had a LOT of events and I don't think any have ever gone this smoothly. Jeanine and her staff are exceptional! We had appetizers, salad, fresh bread and chicken parm...everything was ON POINT! The red and white sangria they serve was also some of the best I've had! As a long time patron of Blackie's I was really looking forward to the opening of their new location. So far we have been there 3 times and have been disappointed every time. First allow me to say that the food is decent and the atmosphere lively and the staff friendly, as they always have been. Now the Bad! The prices have gone up and for the money the portions are meager. We always sit at the bar and order drinks, the martinis and other mixed drinks they serve are very expensive and there is literally just a few ounces at best, without exaggeration, there is maybe 3 OZ of liquid at best. All of the restaurants I have been to fill the martini glass. We were done after 4 sips. For what they charge for drinks now they should fill you up. This has been the case all 3 times we have been there and the bar tenders have all been different. So I do not know if this is a new policy they set for the bartenders where they must limit the volume of the drink and charge and arm and a leg for it??? I am very disappointed with the new Blackie's and with so many other great choices in the area, Laura's Bar & Grill, Tavolo's Wine Bar, Condessa, and Terazza, there is no reason to get fleeced at Blackie's. read more

A few of our friends live in RI and took us to Blackie's Bulldog Tavern. We went on a Saturday night around 7pm. It was super busy and we had a 45 minute wait, which was fine. We found a table at the bar and grabbed some drinks. The staff was extremely friendly, both at the bar and the waitstaff/hostess. We ordered fried pickles and the asian calamari for apps. Both were delicious My husband ordered the fish and chips. The fish was giant. He was only able to eat half and brought the rest home. Meal came with a generous serving of fries, though they could have been crispier. I ordered the Apple Pie Burger -- HEAVEN! I ordered with onion rings (giant!) and only ate half of the burger as it was very filling. Service was fantastic as well as the food. I wish we lived closer so we could frequently visit! Yum! :) read more

I absolutely love this place! The clean machine salad makes healthy feel decadent. I am addicted to it. The farmers market tacos may be meat free but are so satisfying. The sweet potato fries were just right, crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. My husband loves the chicken. I went here for lunch with my husband and a friend. We ordered the fish and chips, eggplant parmigiana, and the buffalo spud from the paleo/gluten free menu. Every item we ordered was absolutely amazing. My husband and I are here on vacation and have eaten at multiple restaurants in the area that have had high ratings, and this was seriously the BEST meal we had. I also ordered a cocktail (the Blackie's Bush) and it was great! Highly recommend this place. Was seriously blown away by how good the food was. read more

I came here tonight for my birthday and I thought the drinks were amazing. I ordered a sirloin sandwich and I expected something else. So I asked to change my meal and loved the salad that I got in return. What bothered me was that they gave me such a hard time taking off the food I took a bite of and didn't like. I come here often and usually everything's amazing I just think good hospitality goes a long way. I work in a restaurant and I know my manager would never give a customer a tough time if she didn't enjoy her meal. Maybe next time it'll be better.. read more

Hold up. Wait a minute. Had a dAH-vine experience last evening at the new Blackie's Bulldog Tavern. Where to begin? As a regular fan of the original BBT, can I just say the food was amazing as per usual but the show stopper is the atmosphere! Holy Joan Rivers (moment of silence) did someone say facelift?? Truly, a lotta love and vision went into creating this place. (Wait till you see the private chef's room where you and your squad get the VIP from Chef Angie) Okay, so I might have posted a few pics of the bathrooms on IG and will go back just to show others the ladies room wallpaper---but that's me. You want to hear about the food, right? The single pep pizza was delish and I double dare challenge you on the gluten free pizza crust! Let me add I never met a carb I did not love but as dining with a bestie who has celiac brings challenges, it's good to know I could eat "what she's having" and not feel bad for her!!!! Onto the onion rings and hand cut potato chips and pulled pork nachos (did I mention it was Wednesday---duh, girls night and there were five of us) followed by the following to share: a build your own burger, chicken street tacos, a lean mean dancing machine kale salad and the sticky, spicy guava salmon. Of course we had dessert, dummy...if i could draw them I would but since I cannot, I will rate them in the order of similar joy as I watch Rocky movies: Rocky 1 (original, nothing like it anywhere else) a totes sick carrot cake ice cream sandwich WHICH IS buttermilk glazed, spiced, nut free batter WITH vanilla ice cream, whipped cinnamon cream cheese frosting, carrot "cream", vanilla bean whipped cream AND candied carrot (take a minute and read again---kinda feel like going to get another one right now) Rocky 2 (another classic, you hope it's on after Rocky 1) the double chocolate paleo cookie WHICH IS very dark chocolate, coconut sugar, olive oil, very finely ground almond flour, baked to medium rare in a mini cast iron that looks like it came out of the Italian version of my childhood easy bake oven ( mmmmmmm soooo cuuuettttteee, david) Five out of five loved it and WILL BE BACK! It's evident that the it takes to make a thing go right it takes two to make it outta sight GirlBosses got this. forevs. read more

The restaurant looks fantastic, atmosphere is relaxing, and the food is the same - fresh and delicious! We ordered our menu favorites plus the wood grilled pizza which is delectable. The coffee is served in a stainless steel cup and saucer which not only keeps the coffee hot(!) but also fosters fun conversation about camping or actually "glamping!" Service was great, and the food came out fast; you'd never know it was their second night! We northern RIers love taverns, and we definitely welcome the upgrade to a fun, funky place with fresh, locally sourced food without the drive to/from the city! read more

I think this place might be a little over rated. The food was only ok. They have a nice way of presenting the food that is unique. They don't take reservations for parties under 10 if you call for reservations. But they have a app you can down load and use that to be added to a list or you can call at 4pm the night you want to go and be put on the list. We called at 4pm for 6:30 a party of 8. And we sat just a few minutes after 6:30! I was pleasantly surprised! People who walked in was told they had a 3 hour wait!!!!! read more

Second visit, unfortunately with a group of non foodies. I heard the burgers are the best here, but how can you NOT be intrigued by the rest of the menu? And try something new? I ordered a bunch of the Paleo sides and was very happy, though we all noted all of our dinners were salty. They flavor is fab so we ate anyway. I love salt but it was too much. Fortunately you know the owners appreciate feedback so we let the waiter know and he said he'd let the owners know. That is the difference between the usual local places in the Valley and this place! I left off a star due to atmosphere....I prefer to sit in bar area and will do so next time. Keep up the good work! read more

History

Established in 2011.

In typical RI fashion, many locals refer to us as "the old Ron's Spaghetti House" followed by...it's not like Ron's anymore. More recently, prior to Blackie's, it was a fine dining Italian restaurant, Rocco Italian Osteria. Although the food was phenomenal and the decor was a beautiful Tuscan theme, it was not the right fit for this area. The former owners changed concepts, went through a difficult transition with staff and then found Chef Angie. Shortly after her arrival, she and former GM, Jeanine Iannucci, purchased the restaurant and made it their own. They both are on site daily and have their hands in every aspect of their business.

Meet the Business Owner: Angie A. Jeanine I. A.

Chef Angie was no stranger to the food business since early childhood in Chicago. Wanting to be professionally trained, she arrived in RI to attend JWU...and never left. After spending many years with the Pinelli-Marra Group and opening several of their restaurants, it was time for an even bigger, more rewarding challenge. She found herself at Blackie's and never turned back. Co-owner, Jeanine I, has always had a passion for food and people. With a sales background and a lot of determination, she grew up quickly in the business. Formerly the GM of Rocco Italian Osteria and the initial opening of Blackie's, her heart and soul became the restaurant. When Angie arrived, Jeanine knew she was exactly what the restaurant needed. Shortly after, they purchased the restaurant and have continued to dedicate themselves to their passion together.

I think it's pretty popular but the cheese is a little too salty, weird texture. Just okay. I've had a few different kinds and the cheese is the culprit in the off taste. Skip the Italian food. I've seen on social media that people complained about the new location having mainly street parking - we both found parking easily on the street - quit yer b*tchin' people lol. Besides I believe they have a lot behind the restaurant that we didn't have to use but it's there if needed. We were the only ones there when we first walked in but more patrons came in as the night went on. Made our way to the bar and orders were flowing - one warning if you're sitting at the bar, it is an open kitchen so there will be alot of aromas flowing through and may get on your clothes but really it'll just remind you of how good the food was. Also, the barstools are not the most comfy - metal stools with no backing so after 2.5 hours, we were feeling a bit achy. We ordered way more than we should've but everything just looked so good! We got the croquettes (our absolute fave), the cauliflower, the pizza du jour (I think it had spinach, pepperoni, ricotta and garlic) and for entrees we got the fish tacos and the Orecchiette. Not one complaint - everything was divine. Croquettes were melty, smoky little nuggets of heaven and our favorites bites of the night. The pizza had a great balance of flavors and the crust was thin and crispy. We were so full but had a few bites of the fish tacos and pasta - the fish was cooked to perfection and the aioli it came with topped it perfectly. Pasta was different - had a scallion cream sauce that was a nice change up from your typical Alfredo. Don't sleep on this place - the street is busy being on a main road but so well worth the visit, I didn't catch our bartender's name but he and a few other servers were super personable and friendly - gave us just enough time in between meals and personal space to not hover. Where do I even start with Blackie's?! Let's start with the most important part: the FOOD. When I tell you there is not a single bad option on this menu, I genuinely mean it. From burgers and sandwiches to crispy, crunchy salads, pizza, and some of the best appetizers to share, everything is so good. I also love their long list of fun mocktails and delicious desserts that somehow make it impossible to choose just one. And if you're on the hunt for the perfect sweet potato fries, look no further because these are my absolute favorite! The portions are generous too, making it the perfect spot whether you're meeting the girls for lunch, going on a date night, or bringing the family after a sports game. Second, the atmosphere is so unique. The whole restaurant feels clean, thoughtfully designed, and put together. The iconic Blackie's green paired with the dark wood creates such a cozy and inviting space while still feeling stylish. It's just so aesthetically pleasing. And I have to mention the bathrooms because they might genuinely be the nicest restaurant bathrooms I've ever seen. At least in the women's restroom, there are chandeliers, pink soap, and even pink crystals in the sinks. Somehow washing your hands feels luxurious! The service is another reason I keep coming back. The servers are so attentive and genuinely kind. They'll make little comments like, "Great choice!" or "That one's so good," which makes the experience feel personal and welcoming. If you have food allergies, they're incredibly accommodating and never make you feel like you're being difficult or asking too many questions. That means so much. We also never feel rushed, so it's easy to sit back, enjoy the meal and really spend time together. Clearly, I love it here, and I recommend it to everyone. Whether you have food allergies or you're simply looking for a clean, welcoming restaurant with amazing food and a great atmosphere, Blackie's is absolutely worth visiting. One tip though: make a reservation! This place is PACKED almost every day they're open. If you can, try stopping by on a weekday afternoon when it's a little quieter. But if you're willing to brave the crowds, I promise it's worth it. Oh, and one last thing, I promise! I also love that Blackie's is female-owned... so that's probably why it's so good! You can really tell how much care goes into every little detail, from the food to the atmosphere to the service. It's one of those places that just gets everything right, and I'll happily keep recommending it to anyone looking for a great meal. read more

First I want to say I do not normally leave a bad review for a place that has great food. I called Blackie's on 3/18/15 and spoke to a receptionist named Julie or Julia about making reservations on the coming Saturday at 7:30 for 9 people. She nicely told me they only make reservations for parties of 10 or more. I said no problem and she nicely told me to call back around 5:30 the day of to put my name in. That Saturday came and I called at 5:30 and spoke to another female receptionist and she took down my name and telephone number but asked that my family come in at 8pm when it isn't as busy. I said that was understandable and it worked out better because my grandfather in on oxygen so I didn't want him standing too long. My two brothers arrived around 7:30 to have a few beers and gave the receptionist our party information. They then proceeded to sit at a high top table having beers waiting for the rest of my family. I arrived at 7:50 with the remaining party and gave the receptionist my name and telephone number. She looked at me strangely and said that she didn't have anyone by my name or party on file! So another receptionist came over and said she remembered speaking with me. She starts looking through her book and then a few smaller pads laying on the counter. She then told me she never wrote it down but I could wait 2.5 hours! I explain about my grandmother's 80th birthday and my grandfather being on oxygen and she basically tells me I should have lied and said I had a party of 10 because other people do it all the time. Now I am really getting upset so the first receptionist I spoke to tells me she will see if there is anything she can do. She comes back and tells me sorry I feel really bad (obviously not enough) but we have four large parties ahead of you!!! I go get my brothers who are wondering why the receptionist didn't tell them in the first place there wasn't a party under Jaime on file for 8pm?! If they would have told them earlier we could have made alternate arrangements somewhere else before it got even later. Luckily we called our local go to restaurant Tavern on the Main and they put together a few tables for us and even stayed open later than normal. I guess it wasn't a good idea that I bring everyone to try a new place I had been raving about on such an important night (80th birthday). I felt awful since it was my grandmother's 80th but it all worked out in the end somewhere else. read more

Blackie's Restaurant has long been known for serving decent and flavorful food, making it a go-to spot for many locals. However, my recent experiences have left me disappointed, as the quality of the food has noticeably declined. Unfortunately, this trend continued during my most recent takeout order. Today, I decided to try Blackie's chicken souvlaki by placing a takeout order. Excited to enjoy a delicious meal at home, I eagerly unwrapped the package upon arriving home. To my dismay, I discovered that the bread accompanying the souvlaki was old, stale, and falling apart. It was disheartening to see a crucial element of the dish in such a poor state. The bread should have been fresh and acted as the perfect vessel for the flavorful chicken, but instead, it detracted from the overall experience. The flavors seemed muted, and the overall dish lacked the usual vibrancy that made it a standout option. It was clear that the food preparation did not meet the high standards that Blackie's usually upholds. As a regular customer who has enjoyed satisfactory meals in the past, the decline in food quality during my last two visits is disheartening. I understand that restaurants can have their off days, but to experience a consistent drop in quality is concerning. While I cannot fault the restaurant for the takeout process, as the packaging was secure and the order was ready on time, the disappointment in the food itself overshadowed these positives. I informed them of the situation and they apologized and credited me for the order. However, it was a disappointment dinner for me. In conclusion, my recent experiences with Blackie's Restaurant have been disappointing. The takeout order of chicken souvlaki I received had old and falling-apart bread, and the overall quality of the dish did not meet the usual standards of taste and freshness. As someone who has previously enjoyed their meals, I hope that Blackie's takes these feedback seriously and takes the necessary steps to improve their food quality and regain their reputation for providing decent and flavorful dishes. read more

Update Review: Did Blackie's Earns Its Redemption?? After years of joking about our past experience at Blackie's, my wife and I finally decided to give them a second chance. This time, it was like night and day. From the moment we arrived on a busy Saturday night, it was clear they had mastered their reservations and flow--our wait was minimal despite the crowd. The menu remained as intriguing as ever, packed with creative dishes that piqued my interest. But the biggest and most welcome surprise? The service. Unlike our last visit, this time, it was exceptional--our server was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely attentive. Now, onto the food. We started with the **Cheeseburger Rangoon**, expecting a simple burger filling, but it was so much more. The perfectly crispy wrapper held a well-balanced mix of meat and other ingredients, delivering an unmistakable cheeseburger flavor in each bite. A great start. For mains, my wife opted for the **Turkey Club Sandwich**, which she loved, while I went for the **Brisket Melt**--and wow, did it deliver. The brisket was tender and flavorful, paired with an incredible blend of cheeses. I was initially hesitant about the inclusion of apples, but they turned out to be more of a subtle chutney, adding just the right hint of sweetness without overpowering the dish. I chose fries on the side but could only finish half--it was that generous. Overall, Blackie's completely redeemed itself, earning back nearly two stars in my book. From service to food, they nailed it this time, and I'll definitely be back. **Well done, Blackie's!** read more

Firstly, this place is a sports bar/pub type place. With that in mind, I would expect good draft beer at reasonable prices. That, they have. The problem with this place is their food. Their food is what you may expect at a decent pub, but their pricing is artificially high. Maybe it is due to masquerading the food quality with chic, modern dinnerware and arugula. I was pleased to find Nashville Hot Chicken on the menu, a real favorite of mine. The very nicely prepared plate came to me and I immediately noticed that the chicken wasn't in whole pieces as I would expect all Nashville Hot to be. Some sort of "filet" or large "tender" pieces (they were not tender at all) drenched in a mixture of Louisiana hot sauce and BBQ sauce were presented to me and not crispy at all. It tasted more like Buffalo chicken tenders than Nashville Hot. The best part was the mashed "taters". Very good! My two dinner companions were also basically unimpressed with the quality/price ratio. One orders a $16 sandwich and found it didn't include fries. $16 bucks and NO FRIES? Are we in Manhattan?? Ohh, this is Smithfield, sorry. Fries were $2 extra. At any rate, as we eating, one of the owners stopped by our table to ask us about the food, service, etc. I told her my thoughts. She did offer to change our meals, which was a very nice gesture, but by that time the "horse had left the barn". It is doubtful that I will return here anytime soon since there are many other alternatives. read more

Found out about Blackie's after attending an Izzy Foundation Gala in Sept and saw in a video there, that the owners provide lunch every day to the Izzy Room at Hasbro Children's Hospital, which we thought was so kind, so we headed to dinner with 6 others last Friday night to give them a go at. It was wonderful!! We had a reservation and were seated on time by a very pleasant young lady. We sat right next to the 2 pizza ovens, so of course it was the first thing we tried. We ordered 2 different kinds, 1 was gluten free. They were both delicious. My sister in law who has Celiac was so thrilled that they have 2 different ovens and stations so it does not cross contaminate. We also ordered the chicken tenders and nacho's, which were so good, but the tenders will be titled our all time favorite from now on. The dining area was beautiful, and even though they were very busy, we were still able to carry on a conversation and not feel it was too loud. Our servant Brent gets 5 stars for awesome service and suggestions. The girls had salads but the boys had the backyard BBQ and loved it, good size portion. We were too full to have dessert, but saw some go by that looked delish. All and all, we enjoyed our dining experience very much and will definitely be returning. Saw one of the owners on the way out who cheerfully, along with other staff at the front desk, thanked us for coming and wished us a Good night. read more

It was our first time here and there won't be a second time. When we arrived, the parking lot was full, which we thought was a good sign. When we entered, the smell of mildew was almost overwhelming, but I have a heightened sense of smell, so I tried to overlook it. We ordered wine and their Kegerator appetizer. It came, it looked terrific and even tasted great. We ran out of the large soft pretzel that is served on the board so I asked the server if we could get more pretzel and he said "No". I'm sorry, no? He said it's the one item on the menu that they don't give extras of. I offered pay for it. He went to check with the chef and came back and told us "Sorry, no, she won't do it". Wow. Now, if I was dealing with a James Beard nominee, I could understand the attitude, but you're a pub. In Smithfield. Rhode Island. On top of that, they nickel and dimed me with the toppings on my burger (25 cents for shredded iceberg? that's a lame money grab). I now realize they are probably only busy because they are one of the only shows in town. I should have turned around and left when I walked in and it stunk. I think Angie should remember the maxim, "the customer is always right". Obviously, customers don't really matter as she refuses customer requests. I asked for a pretzel, not a kidney. There are too many other places that are great the first time to give them a second chance. read more

Husband and I went once last year and sat at the bar.. had a great time and the apps were amazing! We went back last night and sat at a table. Couldn't even tell you our server's name because he greeted us with "looks like you're all set for something." After waiting 5+ minutes to be greeted and after watching him greet a table that was sat after us, yes, we were indeed ready for our drink order and an app. Another 5ish minutes to get the drinks. Thought I had ordered a draft but didn't realize it was a can (no biggie, was still gonna drink it). He walked by a couple minutes later as I was looking through the drink list (just curious as to what I'd get next) and pointed out "that's the draft list" and just walked away, as a way to make me feel stupid. Salad came out with my meal, nope. Icing on the cake was "can I get you some change?" which is a HUGE no no! So rude. Still left over 20% as I am also a server but hands down the worst service ever. Nachos were a disappointment. Husband loved his burger but the mac and cheese is extremely heavy. Doesn't make me want to go back again, especially if two people dropped $90 and got crap service. read more

Ate earlier this week at Blackies. I was in town for business and looked at the reviews. I figured I had to try this place. Had the Burnt Ends Sangwich, in-house Smoked Beef Brisket. You can smell the smoker out back as you pull up. It was excellent. As my appetizer I had the Smokehouse Pork Chos, a take on Nachoes. Homemade Potato Chips layered/stacked with Smoked Pork, and a delicious Sweet Potato Cream. Completely original and delectable. I had to go back the next day. I ordered the Marinated Eggplant Grilled Cheese Sangwich. This is one of the most delicious sandwiches I have ever eaten, and I am in the Food Business. So to be a complete groupie, I again ate there on my last day in town. Had the wonderful Reuben, with in-house made corned beef, which gets shredded and crisped on the flat top before placed in you sandwich. To note, I had dinner at the venerable Al Forno, which was great, however the comfort food, unique and administered perfectly at Blackies makes me want to travel 3 states again for that Eggplant Grilled Cheese. Read the reviews. BRAVO! read more

The last three times we have tried this place, the service was not good. Our the last time we went ( a few months ago, now ) we all wanted to go out to eat as a family since we don't go out to eat often. The meal was expensive for a family of five, but this is where we decided to try and eat. The restaurant was not at full capacity - there were a couple tables open ( meaning / they weren't slammed ) it took us almost 20 minutes for them to place our order and after we ordered, the kids food came out after thirty minutes, and my husband and I waited another thirty minutes for ours! During this whole wait time, there was never any mention of the "wait" or apology for how long it was taking. That alone would have made it a little more bearable - just someone acknowledging that this was unacceptable and apologizing for it. Not one mention of it, but we were frustrated leaving there that night and said we probably wouldn't come back. read more

I can't say enough good things about Blackies Tavern! The atmosphere is so unique, their slogan "expect the unexpected" is very fitting. The parking lot is intimidating, but go inside anyway and ask if there's a wait because it's usually the after work bar crowd taking up the parking lot. Justine at the front desk was awesome, my wife and I wanted to sit on the patio and she came and found us at the bar as soon as a table opened up. Donielle was our server, she was friendly and knew a lot about the menu. I ordered the junkyard nachos which were probably the best nachos I've ever had...EVER. My wife ordered the "me so hungry" burger and she absolutely loved it. We will definitely be back! read more

Very average at best. If you like frozen not fresh fish, then come here. We had the fish and chips and I think this was the worst that I ever had in Rhode Island. Covered with a panko crust was the complete fail of the dish. Nothing of the meal tasted like fish, just very plain and tasteless. Coming from a state that prides it self on fresh seafood, this should be a no brainer. French fries soggy and not seasoned at all. Remoulade needed help and coleslaw was purple. Overall service was good. I did notice the floor manager doing as much as she could to help out everyone. Dont think we will be repeat customers. read more

FINALLY MADE IT HERE AFTER 2 FAILED ATTEMPTS. Service all around was kinda meh, but the food totally makes up for it. Had a number of friends over at Bryant and always tried to make it in here, but I always tried on the weekend and was unsuccessful. Started with the calamari, split a flatbread with friends, and obviously had to get a burger.. after all, that's what they're know for, right? I got the America Pie burger. I would absolutely recommend this place, but if you can only make it on a weekend, try getting there earlier in the evening, or just go on a weekday. read more

I used to always love this place, but the past few times I've been it seems to get worse and worse yet the prices keep going up. I ordered a burger this time and the server never asked how I wanted it cooked. It came out like a hockey puck. It was actually CRUNCHY... that's a problem. I would have sent it but the server never came back. A different person came twice to clear my plate though, the only problem was that I was still eating. The only reason I gave two stars instead of one was because the chips are good. I won't be coming back. It's too bad. read more

So I've been to Blackies with my family in the past and have had good experiences right along. The food is awesome and there are so many options. Last week our server Justine, was the best waitress I've had in a long time. She was sweet and funny and had something good to say about every dish. Our drinks were always full and our dinners were timed well with the appetizers. It's refreshing to have a waitress that really enjoys her job. Everything is worth the price with that kind of service (especially the big fat Greek sandwich). read more

The server was great, food was served fairly quick. Thats what gives this 2 stars. Based on the small portions and mediocre food at high prices, wouldnt return. Expected a $20 Rueben to be robust, not a small sandwich halved and stacked with a big toothpick. Instead of the bland chips, ordered a shot glass of decent cole slaw for an extra buck they must sorely need. To add mac-cheese? Extra $10. 3 thin pickle chips, not even a spear. Sorry Im more of a J's Deli-type budget guy I guess. read more

Since moving to the Smithfield area it's nice to see a place with personality and not another pizza place.... read more

Interesting choices. Overall I think its good to change menus once in a while, and then wind back around and make sure the favorites are not totally abandon, because some signature dishes is why people go back to certain places. Hope they keep that in mind. I like burgers so I like trying differnt ones all the time. this place has good choices and of course a nice draught is needed. I will try again, but always go when less busy. read more

She has a little spunk, but a sweet caring lady nonetheless. I decided to try the fish and chips after Lisa told me it was the best in town. I'm not big on fried fish and prefer grilled, but this fish was pretty good even though it was breaded and fried. The cod (I think) fish was thick and flaky. It tasted like fish but not too fishy. The tarter sauce was good too. The fries (chips) were solid as well. Thank you Orchard Grill and Lisa for another nice meal and memory in Smithfield!

The Orchard Grill always disappoints:…read more The place is a mishmash of furniture from different periods in the buildings history, there's a section of cafe seating and booths. Its fine and seemed relatively clean. For this visit, we arrived about 9AM early in the work week, the restaurant was at about 20-25% capacity. There were 3 waitstaff on the floor and one showed up shortly after we were seated, this brought the total number of servers to 4. The staff immediately seemed put upon by our presence. I usually try to seem more friendly when I am confronted with folks like this, but they would have none of it. My friendly smiles were met with blank stares. Once we were seated, the drink question was asked of us. But the staffer was multi tasking, and when we responded, it was acknowledged as if we'd rudely interupted them. Further interactions went similarly. Our food arrived on the slow side but in a reasonable amount of time. The waffle was fluffy and crisp, the pancake thick and on the dry, soft, cakey end of the spectrum, (vs thin, buttery and crisp). Fruit was your standard food distributor pre-cut variety of melon, red grapes and pineapple, the same stuff you get at the supermarket. My scrambled eggs were overcooked, dry and rubbery but I have had worse. Bacon was similarly dry, probably reheated, not cooked to order. Italian toast was from a real Italian loaf, thin but decent. Homefries were pretty good. Once the food arrived, no one came by the table again to check on things until well after we'd finished eating. I initially thought there were no refills on the weak coffee until I heard an adjacent table being offered a refill. We were never asked if we needed anything else, or if the food was okay. That said, the food at the Orchard Grill isn't bad, it's just mediocre.. Paired with the bare minimum of unfriendly service, it was just not worth the 40+ dollars for the adult and two kids meals. Waitstaff treat you like a task, not like patrons, not like people seeking a positive experience. At the Orchard Grill you are an obstacle to be oveecome with the very smallest amount of effort you can get away with without seeming overtly hostile. Each of my preceeding visits were similar experiences.
