My biggest regard is not trying this bakery sooner and not coming earlier to opening hour. We got here around 10:30am and the options were pretty limited already even though still good. We got a small variety of baked goodies and a couple iced coffee lattes. The croissants are so buttery and soft. The kouign-Amman is also amazing- I really love the layers. The iced lattes were just alright for me- not as smooth as I would have liked but was a much needed caffeine drink. I hope to come back soon and would like to order a custom cake in the future. Just had a really good breakfast sandwich at Kasama in Chicago so remembered to come back to do this review. Was super disappointed by the egg and cheese croissant sandwich here. The two major disappointments were 1) the croissant itself, not sure I like the trend of flat croissants. Pressing it flat wastes the layers and the texture doesn't have the mix of crisp outside soft inside of a good croissant anymore 2) I love a good custardy egg and unfortunately mine was rubbery. :( This might be a me only experience but to line up for so long to have a bad sandwich like that was just not worth it. At Kasama the custardy egg was still soft even though I had a pick up order and ate it 20 min later. read more

It felt like walking into a Parisian cafe! Love the bright and cozy neighborhood meet up vibes. It was packed on a Sunday mid morning. Seems like it would be a great place to hang out with friends. The location outside is inviting- farmhouse feel. Parking is horrible. Good luck finding street parking here and the lines are long. The interior is clean but too packed. Every table was taken with folks waiting after they'd ordered. The process for ordering is awkward, especially when it is so busy. You start off being greeted in front of the lovely display of baked treats. We ordered $90 worth of good to go and ordered something to enjoy in restaurant. Unfortunately it was so loud they didn't get the order right that we wanted all the baked items to go and enjoy the hot items and coffee in restaurant. As a result we waited about 20 minutes having to check back with the cashier twice on the order. We got a table, had to ask for a number even after paying $90 for two people. Our coffees were delivered to the table in paper cups while others around us served in nice cappuccino dishware. The server nicely asked "is that all?" Once again we said no, we ordered about $90 of food. When the food came out everything was packed to go. No utensils nothing. Ambience too loud to hear ourselves talking. The seats so close together, the family of 5 next to us had kids who spilled their hot chocolate all over the entire table, splashing everywhere. Interestingly many parents in the place seemed not to have their kids mind etiquette. Parents had the kids iPad and apps blaring with cartoons - it wasn't a nice ambiance at all. We have kids but they're mindful of their surroundings. Coffee not great. We went to coffee school just to learn how to make a good espresso. It was ok but have been to many places where the coffee is really great. Food is good but it didn't make me feel like I'd crave it again to go back. Over toasted the sandwich breads on the sandwiches we got. For a difficult place to reach, and such a noisy atmosphere- the food has to be top notch to go thru the hassle. Business needs to work on a processs to manage the crowd and parking. Also put the cashier ordering first so you know how to separate the order from here and to go. All basics of customer experience. The one dessert that was quite Memorable is the lemon tart. Delicate crust with a velvet cream on the top. That one was worth going back for a take out. Please improve the ambiance though. First off I would like to say the staff was wonderful and helpful. The food was good, but the environment was chaotic and packed. It's a small restaurant and seating is limited. While we waited in line we were looking at what everyone else was eating. I got the banana cream pie and a club press sandwich. The banana real pie was good. I enjoyed it but the crust seemed hard and messy. While enjoying my banana cream pie I had several other customers stacked up next ok me waiting to get their orders. The sandwich was delicious. It took a bit to get, but I would say it was quite tasty. The only complaint I would have would be the random elbow smacking into my back by accident. The service was great and the food was delicious, but I would advise anyone who would like to visit and try some of the tasty treats, you would be better off taking it to go. We did get a Croissant load to take home and I do recommend getting one of those for later. read more

Upon walking in, you are greeted with this clear glass pastry case: viennoserie, cookies, sweet treats, you name it. This place just makes me squeal with joy at its beauty. I ordered a latte, egg and cheese croissant sandwich (which is two pieces of sliced bread out of a croissant loaf, crazy! I know). The sandwich was very decadent and hefty, I finished half of mine and took home half. Also ordered a couple of croissants and pain au chocolat to take away. They were just alright. When I tried to tear the croissant apart, it was quite tough and stretchy. I wish they would be more flaky on the outside, and soft when bite into. Excellent pastries, very good coffee drinks and great service. We've been here several times and have never been disappointed. I've had pastries and cookies of all kinds. Their chocolate pistachio croissant is amazing. However, the main event for me and my wife is the egg and cheese croissant sandwich. There is only a small sign amongst the pile of decadent pastries and we thought it would be a regular croissant with egg and cheese, like a million other places. No way! They somehow have figured out how to make croissants into a loaf bread form. You get 2 thick slices that are buttered and toasted, then add cheese and a chive spread. Then the egg must have cream or milk added to make it very thick and dense. It is an intense, delicious experience. You must go try it! The coffee drinks (cold brews, lattes and espressos) are all very good. The service is very friendly as well. They have lots of indoor seating as well as a patio on the side where we camp out with our strollers for a bit. Be forewarned, on weekend mornings (even at 9am) there is a line that stretches out the door and ofter around the corner - but it is so worth it. read more

Our first visit we picked up a couple of breakfast sandwiches and a loaf of their croissant bread. That's right, croissant bread. We love croissants, We thought, how can you make a croissant bread? Well, they figured it out here at Black Walnut Bakers. The outside of the bread is just like a croissant. It's flaky and buttery. Their breakfast sandwich is huge, rich and buttery. That croissant bread changes breakfast sandwiches for you! This time we ordered an almond croissant, a slice of their Cassis Vanilla Bavarian Cake, a lemon tart and a Pain Suisse.The almond croissant was sweet, crunchy from the almonds and rich. The cake might have been my favorite, and I'm usually not a big fan of cake. The cake was light and airy. The layers of cream were sweet, but not too sweet. The blueberry flavor was naturally sweet. The game changer was the cookie like crust. That made all the difference in the world. Having that crunch accompany the other textures and flavors made this cake like no other. The lemon tart was perfect. A nice tart lemon filling inside of a buttery crispy shell. The Pain Suisse is like a buttery, flaky croissant with a chocolate bar surprise. So tasty! This place is incredible! After being in Minnesota for almost a week, I was really craving some really high-quality, gourmet foods. We happen to be in the city and I really wanted some good bakery items. I found this on yelp and was not disappointed. I ordered a bunch of items and we brought some dessert to bring home and serve at dinner. Everyone was super impressed. The croissant was amazing, as were most of the desserts. You have to go to Black Walnut Bakery. Easily, one of the best bakeries I have ever been to in my life, anywhere. Located a few blocks south of the bustling Lake Street of Uptown, Black Walnut Bakery is nestled into a more suburban neighborhood on Hennepin Ave. I have now been here 4 times and I have not been disappointed. There is almost always a line out the door, but it moves very fast. Try to go to earlier into the day so you can have full range of items to choose from as most things sell out as day goes on. My absolute favorite so far is the Bear Claw which is definitely a must-get in the Twin Cities. A flaky pastry filled with a sweet cream cheese and jelly filling, what's not to love! 10/10 The egg sandwich is served on two slices of a fresh croissant loaf and features a massive egg custard and some tasty cheese. Another one of my favorite foods in the Twin Cities and definitely one of the most unique breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. 10/10 The banana chocolate croissant is also really good. I am a big fan of pastries that incorporate bananas and this was no exception. 8.5/10 The chocolate croissant was simple, yet delicious. Probably the best bakery in the Twin Cities, when it comes to sourdough bread and pastries. And I've tried most if not all of them. I normally get the sourdough bread, almond croissants, and random other stuff like loaf of croissant, eclair, banana pudding! Some of their stuff is so rich and buttery that's I can't handle more than a few bites (quiche)! Service is good; space is modern and cozy but gets crowded sometimes in the morning. By far one of the best places we have found in Minneapolis. It's a new style French bakery! We have all had good croissants But really what u are here for is the egg custard sandwich. Here is how u get it: don't get it with ham! If there is 2 of you get ONE! It's like 6388 calories! Half is plenty enough, with enough room to spare for a sweet treat. The Egg & Cheese Croissant Bread Sandwich is very decadent so I recommend sharing this, enjoyed the exterior and maybe more seasoning on the fluffy egg would help since it's so thick. I would give this place 6 stars if I could. Tucked perfectly on the corner of the street. Walking in, you immediately smell everything you want to smell walking into a bakery. Butter, sweetness & coffee roasting. Friendly staff, good service & feel good food. We got the tuna melt, egg & cheese croissant sandwich & tomato toast. All were rich in flavor but perfectly balanced with the acidity and freshness from the tomatoes and fresh herb aioli. To drink my husband got a vanilla latte with oat milk and I got the Cornish peppermint tea. Quality of the coffee was highlighted in the latte and the tea was a great way to help digest a delicious brunch. P.s. they have croissant loafs and assorted breads for sale aswell! While I only had the ham and gruyere cheese croissant, I'm still impressed. Service was good, lots of sweet and some savory pastries, and several drink options from non-alcohol to alcohol. The croissant was really good, but if you're here on a business meeting or "date", I wouldn't recommend it. It's very flaky and simply messy. While I did a great job getting it off my clothes, bag, face... somehow I found a piece in my hair hours later. Anyway, it's cute and bright, with lots of tables (some a bit too close). Easy to find free street parking, and along a bus route. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was the Pear and Sage Kambucha. When I first walked in I loved how beautiful this bakery looked, I was just stopping by the grab some desserts but would have definitely stopped and had a coffee if I had time too. The bakery had a great selection of pastries and non-sweet items, from crossiants to tartes to cakes. I opted for the lemon tarte and the banana chocolate crossiant, both where delicious the tarte was a perfect amount of tarte and sweet with an even more amazing crust! The crossiant was so flakey and delicious I think the almond, chocolate, and banana flavors meshed very well. Definitely worth the price the size was huge! The only reason I'm taking one star off is the worker was not very friendly and seemed to just be staring at me oddly as I was picking a dessert, instead of asking if I needed help. There are so many french bakeries in Minneapolis-St Paul and my gut probably can't afford another one but you bet I'm going to try them all anyway. This newest bakery is minimalistic in it's design, modern, and best of all, each pastry is packed with buttery, flaky flavor. The cafe has a tall glass wall so you can easily see everything they have to offer. And trust me, as soon as you see everything, you'll want everything! I tried the Kouign Amann, Almond pastry croissant and the lemon tart. I absolutely loved the Kouign Amann. I loved that it wasn't too hard to bite into and was still flaky and soft on the inside. It was also larger than the ones I've seen at other bakeries. I felt like I was really getting my money's worth. Definitely get this! The almond pastry was divine as well. It was actually STUFFED with almond paste. Some bakeries only put a thin layer so you can barely taste the almond but I loved how much they were able to slather on, because I love almond paste. They also had an appropriate amount of powdered sugar on top - always a plus. Lastly, the lemon tart. It was probably my least favorite of the 3 - not to say it was bad, because it was still delicious. But I have a huge sweet tooth and this definitely put the "tart" in "lemon tart." The egg flavor was strong too - similar to a lemon bar, but less sweet and more pudding-like. I was expecting the consistency to be a bit thicker. Still liked it, but husband didn't - he doesn't like tart things much. I might get it again but if I were to come back, there's a 100% chance I'll get the Kouign Amann and Almond pastry again. read more

I've been meaning to try this bakery after seeing some amazing pics here on Yelp, and it just so happens that it is located right next door to my new hair salon. The space itself is clean and bright, with beautiful pastries lined up in clear cases. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The pastries reminded me of the beautiful croissants we had in Paris - the type of croissants that seem to have endless seas of perfectly baked wafer-thin crispy, crunchy layers. They honestly look remarkably similar to the pastries in Paris, and they taste awfully similar, too! I got... -Cream cheese croissant or tart or something like that. It's a square pastry with cream cheese and some fruity jam type thing. Whatever, it's delicious. Like stupid good. -Almond croissants, which truly remind me of France. They rival some of the best croissants we had there, and they look just as pretty as the beautiful pastries we saw in the windows of Paris patisseries. -Chocolate croissants, my favorite. Amazing, with a different texture because it's a stuffed croissant, but still fantastic. -Ham quiche - 30 seconds in the microwave and I thought I died and went to heaven. So my friend told she did like their Eclair. Me, grieving up eating éclair in multiple francophone countries, I decided to try today. It was good. Very strong actually it's covered or suppressed the taste of vanilla. So I had to try that I need a bite self because I feel because week. It was perfect. And the bread was thicker than the average bread but it was a bigger and you can see from the picture I licked the last drop of vanilla cream. Later in the summer, I tried chocolate pistachio: pistachio was great however the chocolate was hard so I would recommend you to warm it up for you a little bit so the chocolate melts in your mouth. We visited this Exceptional Bakery in September while visiting our son and daughter-in-law. The ambience is wonderful, very warm and cozy. The almond croissant was one of my favorites along with the croissant egg sandwich. We live in Oregon, and our daughter-in-law, who works at the bakery, visited us here and gifted-us a cookie box. I live very close so I go here regularly. Very good ambience especially in good weather when the patio is open. One of the few coffee shops/bakery I go back to over and over in a short period of time. It is a very busy place. The pastries I've tried have all been good, but what I always come back for is the egg and goat cheese croissant sandwich - there's nothing else like it! The only drawbacks in my opinion are that the espresso menu is somewhat limited, especially in terms of latte flavors, and the black coffee is pretty acidic in my opinion. This place is definitely more focused on being a bakery though, so I can't dock them much for that. read more

New coffee shop and bakery opened in the Uptown area by the pastry chef who was supplying baked goods to Spyhouse Coffee shops among other things. Very beautiful space. A lot of white, light bright colors and open baking space. It has the atmosphere of a fun late weekend brunch hangout space. It doesn't have the traditional vibe of a coffee shop where you feel like opening your laptop and sitting for hours. It was noisy, but in a fun way. A lot of chatting and eating around us. The trail cookie was chewy and very good. Not overly sweet. The croissant was very flaky and very good as well. I will definitely be back here for a weekend coffee brunch day! read more
