It's been a long time since I've been in and the pastries are still great. We came on a Sunday around 8:30 and it was packed inside but no line to order. The space is about the same and they packed a bunch of tables inside so it is kind of stuffy but that's MN winter life. We got the raspberry passionfruit kouign amann, raspberry cardamom frangipane bostock, almond croissant, banana chocolate croissant and the bear claw. Also ordered a cappuccino, latte, cortado and black coffee to drink. Drinks came out pretty fast and were decent but nothing to write home about. The pastries were delish. The croissants were super hefty in size and very filled which was nice and definitely worth the price. My kouign amann in comparison was really small and at almost the same price I would say was a kinda overpriced. But they texture was light and crunchy and I really enjoyed the jam inside. Bostock was dense in a good way with a layer of jam and then frangipane. You could really taste the cardamom too. Bear claw was croissant that they filled with almond, raspberry and cream cheese. Hands down my fav place in Minneapolis! I come literally every other week. The bearclaw has to be my favorite thing on the menu and next is the pan suisse. They have a vegetarian croque madame that is super good if you get it fresh. The croissant breakfast sandwich was almost too savory for me with the butter in the bread and the cheese. Like everyone else in Minneapolis, I love this bakery. The staff is always fantastic, the bread or pastry always perfect, and it's not too bad if you don't go during peak times. I almost always get a laminated pastry but decided to go for a proper breakfast with a panini, or "Hot Pressed" on the menu. We got the "Vegetarian" with goat cheese, roasted tomatoes, almond spread, and balsamic on house sourdough. The highlight was definitely the bread; perfect thickness to griddle and keep a lot of the sourdough chew. The sandwich was great but I wish there was a bit more cheese as the it was the first ingredient but barely came though. I'd get it again but probably after trying another one, or just getting a quiche (It's amazing). We also got a pain au raisin and almond croissant. The pain au raisin was amazing. Crispy with a sticky-sweet orange & cardamom glaze. Wish there was more "raisin" in the pain au raisin, though. The almond croissant was delicious but really dense. I don't think the croissant held up too well to being just crammed full of frangipane and butter. All that to say: don't pass up their banana pudding. One of the, if not the best bakeries in Minnesota. I was there on a Sunday around 1:30, there was a small line but moved quickly. I got an Almond Croissant with the "Blondie" cookie. It was the best croissant I've ever had! The croissant was the perfect amount of flakiness and very dense. The cookie was very delicious, but the croissant was the real winner here. The focaccia was really oily; it started to soak through the paper bag but had a nice crunchy top crust. I came here on a Sunday morning 10 minutes before opening and there was already a line, and for good reason! The pastries here are incredible and i love the wide variety of options. This was my first time coming here and i got the chocolate banana croissant, potato and leek croissant, passionfruit and raspberry kouign amann, and the gingersnap banana pudding. All of them were wonderful. My favorite was definitely the potato leek croissant, as savory pastries are my weakness! I finally looked closer at their open hours, and made my way over for an afternoon pick-me-up. SPACE/AMBIANCE This space is very light an airy, with a clean ambiance that is peaceful for sitting and chatting. There are a handful of tables in 2- and 4-tops, and most folks here are with others, chatting. I think I was one of the only ones alone working on my computer at the time I visited. I wouldn't say this is overly set up for solo workers as the outlets aren't easy to find and it's pretty chatty in here, but definitely doable! FOOD Their baked goods are stunning! There are so many beautiful options from sweet to savory to bready to flaky. I'm gluten intolerant so there wasn't much for me to pick from here, but I ended up getting a quiche and banana pudding for my partner (to sneak a bite from!). The banana pudding should have sonnets written about it. It's THAT good. The quiche was stunning too! DRINK The hot matcha latte was delicious! They offer classic drink options. How is this bakery rated only 12th? It is definitely the best bakery in the Twin Cities. There's a bit of an elitist atmosphere in there; i.e., each coffee drink takes about 10 minutes to make and the egg sandwiches even longer, but the variety and quality of everything they sell is incredible. And I am a bakery snob. Their croissants - the flakiest ever. Their pastry creams and other desserts - outstanding. I went later on a busy shopping day so they'd already sold out of many sweets but still had some cookies for me to try. 3.5/5 Everything was solid, but nothing stood out or solicited a WOW reaction from me. The service was underwhelming, but not bad per se. The high quality of the bread was the most notable for me. My take: If you're in the neighborhood, it won't hurt to give them a try. A really cute spot in uptown Minneapolis. The interior is modern, chic and has 5-6 tables. I went there on a weekend afternoon and got myself some baked goods. I was hoping to get Kouign amann but they were sold out, no surprises there. The place gets busy! I tried their monkey bread which was good, the almost croissant was perfect and my favorite was the coconut pineapple cake, so rich and flavors came together. Lovely modern patisserie in Uptown. Stopped by here on a Saturday morning after cycling and boy was it packed. If you want something specific, do not come here after 1130, they would have ran out. There's seating inside, but at the time we were chatting, it was very full. People would look around and just grab items to go instead of hanging out. The interior has a very light color palette. Honestly, it was a little too much for me. Like it gave a Midsommar vibe. I prefer a traditional bakery or something more whimsical, and this didn't do it for me. It's very well put together, but it lacks a certain warmth. It's still a fun place to bring a friend and chat, especially being so close like a block from lake street. In terms of the goodies, the chocolate croissant was quite nice. Flakey and buttery. The chocolate filling was a good quality. They warmed it in an oven so it came out crispy. Very nice touch. Blondie cookie: I'm not sure about this one. It was also buttery and crispy and chewy. There was a lot going on. Maybe it's the combination of flavors, or overly decadent? Not my cup of tea leading to the drink. London Fog: creamy and warm. I couldn't tell what the foam art was trying to depict, but it was an interesting touch. Not overly sweet, and let me enjoyed pain au chocolate. My rating just comes down to my personal preference. It's definitely a wonderful breakfast option for Uptown especially since it's within walking distance. If you're a resident, would definitely see why this can be a goto place. read more

Black Walnut Bakery has been on my list for sometime, so I decided to give it a whirl! First mistake: going on a Saturday morning at 9AM. The line was almost out the door and parking was challenging. I'd recommend going during the week when it will hopefully be less chaotic. Nonetheless, we continued the journey to get a tasty pastry and a latte. The place is a little small, but they had seating available. Again, on a Saturday morning nothing was available. The line went fairly quickly and we ordered a ham & gruyere croissant and a seasonal danish. For coffee I did the miel with oat milk and made it decaf. The ham croissant had the perfect thickness of ham and the right amount of cheese (pro tip: ask for it toasty). The flakiness of the croissant, the crispness of the cheese on the outside, and the gooey-ness on the inside.... This was by far my favorite item! Might even be the best croissant I've had. The seasonal danish was also very good. Would've loved to have had it warmed just a touch. I was also pleasantly surprised by my latte. One of the best bakeries in town. We tried the pistachio croissant and the regular butter croissant and they were excellent. Coffee is really good. Beautiful iced miel with oat milk and an extra shot of espresso. I love the aesthetic of the small and cozy space. The young lady who took my order was extremely patient with me since this was my first time. When I got there about an hour after open the line was already to the door and there we're barely any open tables. The patio was packed and there were people standing and waiting to grab a spot outside. Street parking available and they do bring your drink out to you so it may take a moment. Black walnut is a very nice bakery, especially for a weekend coffee and pastry. The caramel iced latte was very tasty and the white tea was great with some milk and honey. The ham and cheese sandwhich was very hamm-y, so if that is your vibe go for it! Personally it was not my favorite, but not bad. This place was great for a drink and a snack. I ordered a matcha latte and a bear claw and both were good. I wanted the matcha latte sweetened and it was a little sweet, but not too much. The bear claw had cream cheese filling that wasn't too sweet as well. Both were good. They have a bunch of different bakes goods that I'd love to try. The inside was a little crowded and loud, but the shop is quite small. There are a few outlets good for getting some work done. Visited 2/18/24. Okay already planning for next time I go back (which I definitely will). I had no idea what I was doing to first time I went and since it was busy I just went with the first thing that called to me. I did really like the croissant (the lamination of the actual croissant was STUNNING), but I realized I wanted the egg and cheese sandwich but didn't know what I should be asking for. What's the best bakery in the city? Black Walnut. Hand's down. I've been eating this gem's fabulous baked goods since back in the day when they were stocking Spy House Coffee. BWB has come along ways since then and I figured it was about time I tooted their horn. I almost don't want to because they're that good! Pastries: My go to order is the kouign amann and plain croissant. Now before you blast the plain croissant, try the one here first. I, too, was once a non-believer and naysayer to the more basic of the croissant family, but when they're done right? Beautiful, buttery, flaky yumminess. And the kouign amann is simply perfection. If they have a seasonal flavor, try it. I once had a chocolate orange one and it was *chef's kiss.* They also have an assortment of breads which are equally yummy. My personal favorite is the croissant loaf. That's right, a loaf of bread made out of croissant dough! It's better than you can even imagine. Service: Everyone who works at Black Walnut is super lovely and fun to have a little chat with while you pick up your morning coffee. Seating: There is plenty of seating (both in and outdoors).
