I've been coming to Black Rabbit for more than two years, so I think it's about time I wrote this review! Anyone who's moved to a new city on their own knows it can be hard to find a good hairstylist. If you find someone great, you're going to stick with that person as long as you can. I booked an appointment with Stephanie at Black Rabbit a few weeks after moving to Cincinnati in June 2020. When I tell you this was the best hair appointment I've ever had, I don't mean that lightly. Stephanie is truly an artist, and her medium is hair. I've been consistently coming back to Stephanie for the last two years -- and the quality of her services has continued to go above and beyond. I also feel like my best self after an appointment with Stephanie, and any woman knows that that refreshing feeling after a good cut/color is hard to beat. Not only is Stephanie a fabulous hairstylist, but she also owns a tattoo shop just across the street from Black Rabbit. They do traditional tattooing, but Stephanie specializes in cosmetic tattooing, and even talked me into getting my eyeliner tattooed. That's a story for a different review, but if you're in the market for that sort of thing, definitely check out Lumen Ink in East Walnut Hills. Black Rabbit as a business kind of operates on a "rent-a-booth" style. All of the stylists manage their own bookings -- and you can access all of their appointment info from the main website. Tl;Dr This is my favorite salon in Cincinnati and Elham is fantastic and talented. I have curly hair and she knows how to handle and style it well. I've never posted a review sharing personal information about myself, but I'd like to use my story as an example to emphasize the wonderful and kind customer service I've received from this salon. I'm a Cincinnati transplant and when first coming here going to the salon was an absolute nightmare. I received comments such as "wow your hair is super thin for your age", "wow your hair really thins when it's wet and I can see your scalp", " you need to take care of your hair better, it really looks like you don't use good products". What these ladies didn't know is that I'm a women suffering from a hormonal condition called PCOS and despite numerous treatments, unfortunately my hair thinning has not improved. These comments recked my self esteem and I avoided going to the salon for 1.5 years. Black rabbit was the first salon I went too after taking a hiatus from salons. When walking in I was scared and already worrying about what rude comment I'd receive from my stylist. Instead I was welcomed into a modern, pleasant, accepting salon and given a hair cut which made me feel beautiful again. From here on out, This is the only salon I will recommend and go to until I move out of Cincinnati. Though I've only received hair cuts, every time I go, there are ladies getting cute trendy cuts and color. Every stylist seems to be knowing what they are doing! A woman here was extremely rude to me in front of the entire store. I work from home a lot and rarely leave my house, so when I left to get my haircut here, I forgot to wear my mask in the store. Instead of a greeting and offering one of the masks from the pile on their front desk, upon entering the store, a woman screams from across the salon, "Man, you can't be in here without a mask!" I thought this was a salon, not a hole in the wall pub. Try this next time without the snotty tone: "Sir, we require you to wear a mask and we have some available here if you'd like." I hope I have a better experience next appointment. I was pretty disappointed with my first visit to Black Rabbit. I originally visited for a hair consult - I planned on doing a balayage. The consult I felt went well. The hairstylist (not sure if I want to name on here) seemed engaged and excited. 4-5 days before my appointment (as soon as I knew so she could have time to adjust her schedule), I contacted that hairstylist to give a heads up that I would only be doing a haircut. No color. I plan on coloring my hair in the future but I wasn't ready for personal reasons that time. At the hair cut appointment - she barely said two words to me. Gave the vibe that she was mad at me (I'm sorry your making $80 in 20 minutes!).. did not offer a mirror to see the backside of my hair. Didn't give me a heads up on price. I was sticker shocked when I saw $65 for a haircut that was blunt edged. Literally took 5 minutes to chop it off. Me being the Good Samaritan... over tipped the already over priced cut a full 20%. She handed me the credit card machine. No smile. Said see you. Like "don't ever come back" kinda vibe. Came home to a clearly decent chunk of hair missed. That being said, I chose to explore black rabbit because I was so impressed with their hair coloring abilities that I saw on social media. I moved to a new state and needed someone of the same or better caliber that I have been seeing. I will go to black rabbit one more time soon - to have a balayage. Elham is wonderful, professional and I would recommend her to anyone. I loathe going to salons ever since I was a teenager due to bad experiences. I have stayed away ever since. As I got older, gray hair took over. I attempted to embrace it, but several opinions told me it aged me ....even my 8 year old.... Living in the east and west coast, it was very easy to find a salon that handles ethnic hair. Being of mixed heritage my hair varies in textures all over my head. My sister who lives in Maryland (she is the goddess of hair and beauty trends and products) was on a mission to find someone in Cincinnati. Especially finding someone that would erase my early hair drama trauma . I honestly told her she will never find someone in Cincinnati. Madison is amazing! I have long light brown/dark blonde hair. I come to Madison for balayage. She does an amazing job. Most of the time we do a nice golden blonde but I have asked her to do a more ashy blonde and she delivered. She does a great job on the cut and style as well. I used to hate how my hair looked right after going to the salon because it was never styled to my liking but Madison does an excellent job and will curl it for me. That is saying something because I have a lot of hair. It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny. My hair grows out nicely so I don't have to come in too often. Your hair hasn't reached its potential until Mandy at Black Rabbit has worked her magic. I visited multiple salons in Cincinnati my first two years in the area before finding Black Rabbit - filling in the void of not having a regular salon. I have really dark hair - resulting in my having a phobia of coloring my hair and it looking like I went Sun-In crazy circa 1995. BUT, as my first grey hairs started to peek through - I knew this phobia was going to be bad news. Mandy made me LOVE color. I explained my concerns and what I was looking for and she did a fabulous balayage ombre adding in some caramel color that was perfect for summer. I LOVED IT. As fall came along, she added in a bit more of my natural dark color - again perfect for the season. She never cuts off too much or too little and is great at letting you know what will work for you. In addition to being great at what she does - Mandy is awesome in general. She is fun and friendly and exactly the type of person you want to talk to while you spend quite a bit of time getting your hair done. The Salon itself is also fabulous. The decor is a mix of rustic and industrial pieces that feel fresh and hip. For example, the mirrors are mounted on old doors that hang from the ceiling -- SO COOL and leaves you thinking why didn't I think of that. The wash sinks are also different than any other I've used. They eliminate that whole broken neck feeling you usually experience to get your hair washed. Cheers to ergonomically correct sinks (and why don't all salons have these?!) They offer you tea, coffee, or other beverages when you arrive - which adds a personalized touch. In my opinion, the prices are great for the quality services you receive. read more

I started coming here when it was first opened. I would have given it 10 stars if possible. It was a high end, chic, funky place to get beautiful. They used the best products and had the best stylist (Aubrey)and waxer (Christine). Well I guess all good things must come to and end. Now it's just a run of the mill slightly nicer than a mall salon. The atmosphere is completely different and I saw a groupon for the salon. Groupons are great but when I think of them in conjunction with salon services I think of desperation on the part of the stylist or salon. I guess I'm back to searching for a new salon. read more

After reading many positive Yelp reviews, I decided to book an appointment at Black Rabbit. I knew I would need a root color, lowlights, a cut, and maybe a highlight touch up. The list of services on their website states all of that would be around $140-$165. I picked a stylist online and was quoted $140. After my consultation, I received mostly lowlights and 4 highlights as well as root color and cut. I figured I was still within the $140 range as the description of the service I wanted says "one or more colors" so I figured that would be highlights and lowlights...the toner was also included in the package price. So needless to say, I was shocked when she said my total was $200. My color looks good, however, my cut is at chin level when I stated I wanted it to hit my shoulders and absolutely did not want it any shorter than that. I've been to many salons since I like to see how others do hair and have never been charged this much before! And especially after the website says it would be $140. Yes, I can see how the price could increase (my hair is not long), but to $200? So before booking, you may want to double check what you will actually be paying. read more

I loved, loved, LOVED my appointment with Brenna. I knew I wanted balayage and to lighten up my light brown/ blond hair but beyond that I was not sure what else I wanted. I let Brenna be the artist and I am so happy with my hair. Throughout the process we talked favorite skincare, makeup, and hair products. She gave me tons of tips on what to use. She is super skilled and knowledgeable not to mention very friendly and sweet. I also witnessed Meg perform some magic across the aisle and think she would be a great bet as well. I had my brows waxed, fixed and tinted by Christine. Christine is very skilled and was meticulous with my brows. I now wake up with almost perfect looking brows (I just need to fill in the end where they were apparently to tired to keep growing :) ). I have always had problems with my hair, whether it be too thick, too curly, or too short/long, etc. But whenever Meg does my hair, I come out feeling beautiful and refreshed!!! I absolutely love this salon. Meg really listens to exactly what you want, but will also offer suggestions and tips if you're unsure about trying something new. She did my hair and makeup for prom in the spring, and I have never looked so good in my entire life! Over the summer I had my medium length hair chopped into a long bob and got balayage instead of my usual highlights/lowlights. I've never loved my hair as much as now!!! It's been growing out wonderfully and is still a lob even though it's beginning to grow some. Also, the balayage helps to look more natural so I do not have to get my hair retouched as much. It's wonderful! Meg is clearly VERY passionate about her career. She is such a happy and kind-hearted individual. My stylist had me processing for wayyyy too l long while waiting on her friend who was stuck in traffic, but couldn't bother to trim my daughters hair in the mean time. Seriously, 45 mins late. I requested she trim her hair while I process, before we even started. "She didn't have time" She even made a joke How she probably could have while i was sitting with toner on in the wash chair & she was waiting on her friend. (Who by the way came in with a bad attitude & didn't dare apologize). Our stylist didn't even ask her coworkers if anyone had time to cut my daughters hair. I watched one walk around and chat with other people & if our stylist would've asked probably could've done it. Also: I sent a request to the stylist ahead of time but my stylist said she didn't see it.
