Family and I took a ride to get out the house. Opened up my yelp bookmarks and Black Hog poppedup. We went in to look at the menu. We were directed to the back where there is a to go kiosk to place orders. It was easy to use and quick. We ordered 1- Chicken comb with Brisket, greens and mac/cheese comes with corn bread 1- Chicken combo with Arkansas Brisket, fries and mac and cheese comes with corn bread 10 wings plain ( sometimes I order wings plain as a test) Winners: Arkansas Brisket Greens Wings Fries Good: Regular brisket (most places will ask if you want moist or lean. they did not and I ended up with lean. Not my preference) Needs work: Corn bread, this is so common. Why.. Is it sssssssoooooo dry. Chicken was well cooked but the seasoning seemed like an after thought. Like it was added after it was on the grill Everyone was friendly and they were well organized! Would I recommend, absolutely. Would I return, absolutely. read more

Black Hog BBQ - BBQ 101 - Barbeque Near Me - Middletown, Maryland

Total ripoff. We ordered a Texas Brisket sandwich with a side of mac. The size was embarrassing even for a child's meal and cost over $20. Used to love this place but it has gone way downhill. Back to back bad experiences. read more

The food was amazing! Some of the best BBQ I've had north of Virginia and other southern states. Cocktails were delicious and are changed seasonally. I had burnt ends and brisket along with Cole slaw and baked beans. Baked beans and burnt ends had a nice spice to them. My wife and mother in law shared a burnt ends and pulled pork platter with mac n cheese and Cole slaw. They loved it. I had a local beer which was good and the ladies got a couple of the cocktails which they loved. We will definitely return as this is just south of our camper and we have been exploring the area more lately. read more

A great place to get bbq in Middletown This restaurant, Black Hog BBQ, started in Frederick, Maryland and has grown into a small restaurant chain with four active locations in the state. Their website states that the black hog is the rarest breed of hogs and they decided to name their company after it. This location, the Middletown restaurant, is the newest addition to the group. We were driving through town and looking for a bite to eat and decided to try it. It is a little off the main road but pretty easy to get to. It is in a strip center on a corner unit with plenty of parking. We were greeted as we entered and taken to a table. The waitress, Athena, did a wonderful job for first-timers like us. She told us that most of the locations are similar to this one with a restaurant and a bar. I ordered a chopped pork platter (sandwich and a side of French fries) and a sweet tea. The sandwich and fries were excellent. The tea had a different taste from the ones that I am used to so that was not my favorite. Food is served on metal trays with butcher paper below and plastic silverware so don't expect fancy plates. The staff was wonderful, the location was very clean and the prices were very reasonable for the amount and quality of food that you get. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it to fellow travellers looking for a good bbq meal in the area read more

Decent BBQ for a local BBQ chain. We have had a few of the smoked meats they offer and have never been disappointed. The side dishes leave a little to be desired, but overall the food is good and the prices are inline with what you typically pay for BBQ in the area. read more

Food was mediocre, service extremely slow - I think there were only 1-2 servers for the restaurant. Staff was not friendly or welcoming at all (including the manager). Will definitely not be returning! read more

Amazingly tender and tasty bbq. Had the brisket platter with greens and beans and rice. Definitely will return

This is not a white table cloth restaurant. Dinners are served on a cafeteria tray covered in paper, flatware is plastic, and all food is served in small paper containers. There is a roll of paper towels on the table in lieu of napkins. This is not a criticism but it should help to set your expectations. The service was good and all staff were attentive. My first impression after sitting down was that it was too loud to carry on a conversation. The music was loud and the sound was amplified by the bareness of he surrounding. There is simply nothing on the floor or walls to absorb any sound. A few tables with folks plus the music leads to shouting to be heard. Turn down the music or get some sound absorbent materials in the seating area. It might be fun to sit outside if the weather was cooperating. Now the food. Generally good but not great. I give it three stars and that's my overall rating too. I ordered a pork shoulder platter with fries and coleslaw. The pulled pork was good but had some bone chips and was served lukewarm on the cool side. A stale cold piece of cornbread and two pickle chips accompanied the meal. The several sauces I tried at the table were all really good. The coleslaw was absent any carrot or character. Lots of chopped cabbage and some vinegar was about it but it was plentiful. Nothing special. The fries were also lukewarm but they were good. There are few other items on the menu I will try again. It looks like a fun place to take the family and have some good BBQ. I've had better and I've had much worse. The total was only $30 including a 20% tip and included one beer. I'll be back to try a few other items. If they quieted it down and had better temperature holding I would up the rating to four stars. Nevertheless I'll come back to try other items because I saw some ribs go by that looked pretty good. Let's hope they are hot. I left full and went next door to Baskin-Robbins for an ice cream cone. read more

I had the bacon cheese burger it was excellent. My wife had chicken and liked it too. The whole place was very clean. The service was outstanding. We never had to worry about needing anything. I've been to four black hogs. And I'd put this one as number 2 as far as my favorite one. But it very close to number 1. I'll go back again. Good job guys!! read more

2 of the 3 times I've gone to Black Hog, they've been out of multiple menu items. Tonight they were out of chicken and pork at 700p -- that's poor management. read more

I am finding it hard to write this review as I work in the food industry and I know the importance of guest feedback, but I believe it is necessary to share my experience. I have always loved the Urbana location, but I am from Middletown originally and I was visiting family so I chose this location. *The pork was so undercooked* that I first heard from my father that he was feeling sick several hours after our meal. Not long after I began to feel very sick as well. Digestive issues and nausea were non stop all night and morning with painful cramps. You should be embarrassed that a basic smoked meat dinner costing over $100 is making your customers sick. And this is clearly not some random isolated health incident, As my parents' friends joining us for dinner became very sick as well. To put it bluntly so my message is clear; gather your kitchen staff into a meeting, learn how to properly cook your food, and get your s*$t together. read more

It's hard to find good BBQ outside of Texas (my home) but Black Hog comes close. Very good Texas brisket and the Mac and cheese is A+ I will be back. Oh, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Smile on his face the whole time. Thank you. read more

I've been to other locations and had good service and food so I grabbed some quick takeout the other night while back in Middletown. The gumbo was pretty good tasting, but it was really thin and lacking for sausage and even rice. Cornbread was good and nice sized portions. The sandwiches and burgers were okay but nothing to write home about. I arrived early and was there with other customers as they packed things up in the back. The staff would constantly unwrap everyone's food to see what everything was and then close it back up. Some sandwiches and containers were opened multiple times by different people. It wasn't really something that made any of us waiting comfortable. I would suggest having a marker or some system to write what everything is when it comes out. read more

Really nice barbecue restaurant. The platters are delicious. I had two smoked meats, Mac n cheese, fries, and cornbread. Everything was really good and filling. Hannah was as good a server as I have ever had. Very clean and our food came out fast. read more

Black Hog BBQ - Platter - Barbeque Near Me - Middletown, Maryland

WHY?............................dose a tender moist rack of ribs, cost the same as a dried up leathery rack of ribs. I remember when Mike T. opened Luke's it was amazing, then The Tasting Room nothing like it in Frederick. The Black Hog set a new standard for eastern BBQ. The kind of BBQ I have gotten lately is sad. Back home home we have a name for a place that serves that kind of BBQ CLOSED.... read more

Staff is very friendly and food is consistently good / above average BBQ for the area. Wish they had a broader draft beer selection given the great local breweries. read more

Took My Mama to Lunch!! didn't want No chicken found a BBQ spot! 1-28-23 and this was ducked in a shopping center lots of parking spaces and huge..walked around to the bar to ask about seating since you had to wait and the hostess took their break before I stepped in..Mason was a Wonderful Host/Server he sat Us down immediately we looked at the menus, Mama was indecisive on a Platter or sandwich.. I went for the DMV which was a Brisket sandwich with one side! I chose the Mac and Cheese with a add on of Potato Salad, My Mama ended up getting the same but with French Fries. She said Personally the Fries needed to be Thicker cut or like Red Robin because you don't get much of the potato itself. Our Meals came out quickly and still HOT! you can definitely tell/ taste it was smoked and it logs at the front and smoker in the back. The Mac and Cheese was very Good!! In taste , flavor and texture! The potato salad was salty and it was eh ok..Don't mind me I'm a chef I'm so analytical lol The Bread needs to be Texas toasts or brioche or something the bread wasn't made for the thick packed on deliciousness of the brisket!. It was falling apart which made it a little less able to enjoy it in its fullest form. The horseradish has to be made in house it was very much kick but paired great!! On the sandwich the Kansas City BBQ was the BEST of the sauces!! Overall I'd definitely come back!! If I come back to town!! I appreciate the hospitality and The excellent customer service and flavorful Food!! Btwwwww The Sandwich makes and Keeps you Full!! I couldn't even eat all my Sides! read more

Hit the spot after a long day of hiking. I lived in KC and TX, so I know BBQ. This stuff is good. The ribs fell right off the bone and you could see the smoke ring on the meat. The host/waiter was awesome too. I tried all the sauces and preferred the sweet and the mustard. Check this place out if you're in the mood for some q. read more

Black Hog BBQ - 1/2 rack of dry rub ribs with corn bread and slaw. - Barbeque Near Me - Middletown, Maryland

They allow kids in without parents and like they're. They have good service. Everyone's nice. They are. They're fast. They have delicious food. They allow like they allow drinks from other restaurants and they're like chill with us. They're not mean I love this place Yeah read more

I mean, for the location, it's not bad. Wings are so, so as far as they go. The dry rub left me with mixed feelings because though they looked good, the rub itself was bland. Had some sweet taste to it but otherwise, eh. A piece of advice, please make sure you check your order and make sure you get what you ordered. The brisket was good, it also has some good traits, but the rub needed more to it. read more

Food and service were outstanding, the Texas brisket and the greens were awesome. Back off on the hot peppers in the greens a little - I like some heat but prefer a little less in my greens. Prices were high on some items ($1.25 for a 2x2 square of cornbread?) but overall a great bbq spot. read more

This Southern girl loved the food! I had the ribs, collard greens & Mac & cheese. The greens were cooked tender with a hint of spice. The Mac & cheese was real. Not out the box, you could see the browned creamy top. To top it off the customer service was given with a smile and was attentive. The place was clean & family friendly. read more

Very good BBQ! I enjoyed their full rack and the brisket! The price is pretty steep but everything is steep right now.

Middletown location ... we order takeout. The brisket, bacon cheeseburger, sausage sandwich and chili are favorites. Food is delicious and only reason for a 4 star vs a 5 is it is pricey and the sides can be on the small side. But definitely one of our go-to's read more

Black Hog in Middletown catered our wedding back in October. We were impressed from the very beginning. Josh was extremely communicative and even responded to a phone call while he was traveling. Josh and his staff were extremely professional throughout the whole process and were very attentive to the bride and groom during the wedding. Would absolutely recommend! read more

Good food great service close to highway! Worth the short detour! We needed lunch on a road trip on I-70 with two dogs and four family, and we were treated wonderfully and served great, made-on-the-premises food with nice outdoor seating. Took great care of our dogs! Clean restrooms, decent prices especially for that high quality level! read more

Location was clean and service was standard, friendly, although either the staff or bar area was very noisy. BBQ (Arkansas and Texas brisket) was excellent, quite savory, but expensive and very small portions, especially after trimming the fat. Chili and gumbo were more appropriately priced, large portions and tasty, but extremely oily. Sides were mediocre, but again very large portions - more of each than the meats. BBQ salad was a joke: a large pile of lettuce, a few croutons, one (1) sliced cherry tomato, and one (1) cored, halved slice of cucumber with a meat side. Should have been a side offering instead of a separate entrée. Would return for the meats and (sparingly) the chili/gumbo, and maybe to see if the other sides are redeemable. read more

My son and I dropped in for lunch one afternoon and we really enjoyed the meal. I had the Balto-brisket sandwich with a side of beans & rice. The meat was very good and the I loved the side dish as it was just a little spicy. My son also had the brisket sandwich. The decor is spartan but clean. I would say this restaurant is similar to a Mission BBQ. You eat off paper covered metal trays, nothing fancy, but the food ans service were very good. read more

Tried the Bloody Mary and it was spicy and flavorful. Ordered the triple meat mofo, was super impressed! Bbq Mayo is now a new favorite condiment in our household. Lastly I have to say I really enjoyed the house made lemonade. A good mix of sour and sweet. Will surely be coming back because even the service impressed us as much as the food. read more

Stopped here spur of the moment mid-afternoon on a Sunday drive to Frederick from PA and received a super friendly greeting - I liked the place already! Very clean and comfortable - it looks new. Service was excellent. I had the 3 rib appetizer - it comes wet or dry and I chose wet with sauce. The ribs were excellent! And the KC sauce is sweet and a bit spicy. I like that you could order the ribs in multiple sizes. Comes with a tasty piece of corn bread too. Purchased brisket and pork shoulder to take home for later and a side of cole slaw. We were given original sauce to try - I really like that better than the KC even. The pork shoulder was super moist and flavorful. Brisket was good too but the ribs and pork shoulder were the stars in my opinion. Cole slaw was nice and crunchy and more on the the vinegary side of flavor. I will definitely return next time I'm in the area. read more
