Stopped in on a Sunday at lunch time and it was pretty packed! We were seated immediately. It smelled amazing even from outside. There's definitely something for everyone here. The pulled chicken wasn't my favorite, it was really fatty and it turns me off the whole meal when I bite into a piece of gristle. The sauces were so good though. My family loved the stuffed grilled cheese, I'd probably order that next time. The hushpuppies were amazing!! I could eat 6 orders of them. The interior is cute and very laid back/casual. Ashley was an amazing waitress. I got the Carterque burger with tots and was pleasantly surprised. Everything tasted fresh and came out within 15 minutes. It helps to read reviews by others. A Yelper, I know, wrote a great review of this spot and even shared they would visit it again. I bookmarked the page and decided that the next time I passed through the area, I would visit them as well and I am glad I did. The restaurant is located across from Main Street Plaza. There is parking on both sides of the building. As you enter, you will see the host stand right in front of you (there is a waiting area by there, with seating). To the right seems to be a bar area, and to the left are seats for the restaurant. They also have outdoor seating as well (covered). It is not hard to see signage for the restaurant from street level. In looking at the menu, I decided to order a Platter of Smoked Meats. There are 6 options to choose from for meats - you get one, two or three meats. I settled on just one and got Smoked Turkey (hand sliced). It came with 2 sides and cornbread. They have many sides to choose from (saw about 12 on the menu). I settled for Mac & Cheese and Hush Puppies. For the sauce I opted for their Black Raspberry Grillin' Sauce. I felt I got a lot for just under $20 and I couldn't wait to dig in (once I was settled). The meat was so tender, I enjoyed every bit of it. The sauce was delicious - I wanted more (I'll get a bottle of that Black Raspberry Sauce next time). The Hush Puppies didn't last - nothing was left when I was done. The Mac & Cheese was creamy, but it may have been more than I could handle (I'll just have to try something different the next time). I got my order to-go and service was on point. Back in the day I started a competitive BBQ team. At our first comp the guy behind us - Chris Carter, owner of CarterQue - introduced himself and very kindly helped us navigate the process. Really, really helped us out - and we ended up finishing above him. Today I was getting knives sharpened at Ace Hardware (their Resharp machine is awesome!) and stopped next door at CarterQue for lunch. The service was fast and the people were friendly. I ordered my go-to sliced brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad. The meat was tender, juicy, well-seasoned, and had a nice smoke ring so it looked nice; very nice overall! The bun, however, dominated the sandwich. Not sure if it was a bit stale or just had too much, well, bread but it didn't allow the meat flavor to shine through. I ended up putting sauce on my brisket - something I never do. Salad was good, with a hint of dill. Overall value for the meal was good. Bottom line: I'll put my brisket up against anyone's - but if I see Chris coming I know I'll need to pull out the stops to beat him. I will happily be back to CarterQue next time I'm in town, but will get the platter, not the sandwich. That way I can ensure that the brisket will be the star - as it should be. read more

Dog, friendly patio, lots of good meats and great service. What more could you ask for? We were in the neighborhood taking our dog to the vet and it was also her birthday so we decided to have a birthday celebration here. The restaurant just had a great vibe and feel as we walked in, and we were beyond pleased when they said we could have our dogs join us out on the patio. The menu is straightforward, as you would expect. Appetizers, meat, sides. etc. But everything sounded so good it took us a while to decide. We ended up going with the two and three meat three meat platters, so we'd have enough to share with the doggies. All of the meats were cooked perfectly. Lots of flavor and moistness. This included the pit turkey, pit ham, sliced beef brisket, and jalapeño/cheddar sausage. Sides included a great mac & cheese, and a very good potato salad. And of course, the obligatory cornbread hit the spot. There is a variety of sauces to choose from, with the blackberry bbq sauce being the house signature. It really hit the spot, and paired amazingly with the turkey. Definitely had some Thanksgiving vibes going on with that combo. Service was great, with them checking on us often to make sure we had everything we needed, and the drinks stayed refilled. My husband was digging the music that was piped in, and we found out it was actually a BBQ themed channel from SiriusXM. It definitely seemed to fit the mood. Our family of 5 had dinner at Carterque this evening. We arrived just before 6pm and were seated at a picnic table outside. It took a bit for our waitress to greet us but once we placed our order things moved quickly. My husband and I ordered the burnt ends, Old Bay Wings, Hot and Spicy wings and the 3 meat platter. We chose brisket, pulled pork and Jalapeno cheddar sausage with cole slaw and baked beans and a side of fries. Our first question: where are the smokers and grills? Obviously the smoking isn't being done on site. This means everything's precooked and reheated to order. The wings were large and well cooked. The Hot and Spicy sauce was not spicy at ALL. The pulled pork was standard, acceptable but not exceptional. The brisket was cold and dry. The Jalapeno Sausage was served sliced and was delicious. The fries were your average battered bar fries. The baked beans tasted like canned beans with shards of brisket tossed in. The Cole slaw was unremarkable. My overall impression of Carterque: it's a BBQ version of Sandra Lee's Semi Homemade. read more

We had a mixed but generally positive experience here. I have to start by praising the service--the staff was incredibly welcoming, polite, and very attentive throughout our meal. For the food, the menu had some standouts and some items that fell short. The definite hits were the BBQ Pork Eggrolls, which were very good and packed with flavor, and the Chicken Salad. I would highly recommend the chicken on its own; it was perfectly juicy and moist, needing no extra sauce or pairing. We also enjoyed the hush puppies, which were excellent. The downside was the main smoked meat. The brisket was underwhelming and dry, and the accompanying cornbread was also dry. The potato salad lacked flavor and didn't add much to the meal. Regarding the BBQ sauces: I tried a few but wasn't a huge fan of any of the house varieties, which didn't help the drier brisket. Came here for lunch after hearing from friends as the go-to place for bbq. I must say I really enjoyed the pulled pork texture & taste on my sandwich. The sauce was an excellent complement as well. The Mac & cheese was smooth & creamy just the way I like it. Our server was real nice & friendly. She was attentive without being intrusive. That being said, this spot was alright - we tried the Brisket, Ribs, Smoked Sausage, Pit Ham, Fried Fish platter, brisket bites, and hush puppies. Overall the meats were unfortunately dry, with the exception of the sausage. The fish was okay, and properly served with cornbread (good). The pulled pork eggrolls had minimal pork and were really just carried by the BBQ sauce. It was a decent appetizer but certainly not one I will get again. We tried three of the available BBQ sauces and they were all delicious. A couple people in our party got the pulled pork with sides like beans and French fries. They all seemed satisfied. The Mac and cheese was a winner for our kiddo. The broccoli was so overcooked that it was void of texture of flavor. Another person and myself got brisket. It was more than 50% fat and the parts that weren't were so dry that it was like chewing on a smoked, soggy wood chip. We are from Texas and I've never seen such fatty brisket. I did notice a lean option on the menu but I can only assume that it would be like the other half that were dry and flavorless. The brisket also had an excessive amount of dry rub on it that made the fat gritty when chewed. Worst brisket of my life. I didn't bother finishing it. We left and had sandwiches at home. Pleasantly surprised by this adorable little BBQ joint! Started with an order of frickle chips (fried pickle chips served with ranch dressing). So delightfully crispy and packed full of flavor. 10/10! For my main, I opted for the 2 meat platter with pulled pork and the jalapeño cheddar link. I also got Mac and cheese and the sidewinder fries as a side and the black raspberry bbq sauce. Everything was delicious! Being from the south, I'm a bit of a BBQ snob but I was really impressed. I also tried some of the burnt ends as well as the special which was chicken fried steak and they were also huge hits in our group. A place I've been meaning to go for so long, but never found myself in the area until now, and trust me after eating here I'll make the drive back! I ordered a slew of things to try from the menu, but the bbq eggrolls were the thing that completely sold me on the CarterQue hype! The perfect combo of all the flavors that remind me of a backyard barbecue rolled into one tasty treat! The portion is fantastic and could definitely be shared amongst many people. The cue balls and the pork platter were also excellent. Everything was extremely flavorful. I'm not a big fan of the Mac and cheese side that came with the entree, but that's just a personal opinion. Impromptu lunch stop after a morning of running errands. I ordered the brisket and it was dry. My lady ordered the loaded potato, which has brisket in it, but she was content smothering the spud in bbq sauce. So, there wasn't an issue as far as she was concerned. The hush puppies were good, and the menu has a Reuben on it. Admittedly, I'm a Reuben snob as well, so I'll be back to give that a try. The special of the weekend was this delicious and massive Meat loaf burger stuffed with cheese and bacon. The burger was amazing from beginning to end and the sauce on top would make it perfect. I think it was 1/2 pound but felt double that. I didn't taste any bacon in it so they should either up it or leave it out. The cheese went great with it and was genius to have it inside instead of on top with the sauce. This is a bit of a dissapojntment for me. I've been a huge fan of this place since they were located further down main street. My kids loved their ribs and Queue balls. But they have clearly gone down hill. The ribs are no longer trimmed properly. The Cole slaw is flavorless. The beans are mush. The worst thing is the queue balls. They are clearly old, frozen and reheated. Not even sauced well. Everything is old, or left over. Your prices have gone up, but your food now sucks. read more

The Black Raspberry sauce is a must try here. A brother who lives in Mount Airy told me about it, and he did not steer me wrong. I can see why it's a local favorite. I had the burnt ends with the raspberry sauce. Oh so good, and great service. If you're in a group with multiple vehicles/bikes, it seems always easy to park together in the parallel parking opposite the entrance. Love this place. Wife and I had lunch here with her parents on a winter Saturday. The restaurant was full. We were tucked in a corner booth under a tv with the volume turned off and were comfortable. Wife and I had sandwiches - pulled pork for her and brisket for me. We both really enjoyed our food. She got the red raspberry sauce and I had 'ol red sauce. I'd had their award winning black raspberry sauce a few years ago and it was too sweet for me, but the red raspberry was very good. I liked it better than 'ol red and should have asked for samples. I had thick cut curly fries and wife had a side salad and both were good. My in-laws had salads and didn't eat much. One had pulled pork on the salad and other had fried chicken. Not sure whether they didn't like the food or they just weren't hungry. The fried chicken looked thin and dry. The sandwiches looked much more appetizing than the salads. My wife and I had tried several highly recommended BBQ caterer/restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area for our wedding caterer. On two separate occasions, we took our best man and maid of honor to their restaurant to sample food as a potential wedding caterer. They both enjoyed the unofficial "tasting" of pulled pork, pit ham, pit beef, brisket, and the many sides. They both agreed that Carterque was a great selection for the wedding. On the actual day of the wedding in October 2021, Carterque's staff was lead by Colleen and arrived on time for setup. We ordered BBQ Chicken, Pit Smoked Ham, Macaroni and Cheese, Red Potato Salad, and Garden Salad. Carterque was able to accommodate the need for several children's menus and even provided vegetarian options for our vegetarian guests. (The luckiest wedding guest may have been the vegetarian who got to take home most of the vegetarian sausage leftovers.) They decorated the tables nicely and worked well with our volunteers to complete the hall decoration. The food was enjoyed by everyone and my wife and I have been back subsequently for other meals (which involved driving 45 minutes from our home). Carterque even set up a smores station for our guests, which they had not done prior to our event and manned the firepit. Colleen not only directed the staff, but also served as our bartender. We were only able to provide her with one written recipe for our two signature cocktails, as one was an old favorite from graduate school late nights. I relayed the basic recipe on the fly and the Godiva hot chocolate was a big hit. We highly recommend Carterque for any BBQ catering to any of our friends. Pro Tip: Contacting Colleen can be difficult, and we'd recommend calling earlier in the week as they're typically less busy. read more
