Really excellent food. The wet ribs were some of the best I've had, ever. Collard greens were a nice choice, too, for a side. read more

Plenty of meat choices on the menu but the quality can vary. Brisket is usually good but comes out dry more often than expected. Carolina chopped pork isn't bad for being this close to the Mason Dixon line but would not last a week in NC. Cornbread instead if hush puppies. Veggie selection is quite limited. read more

Ate there yesterday (9-3-2011) with my mom. It was fantastic, The best BBQ one can find around the DC area for sure. The ribs were extremely tasty dry with a nice spicy rub (despite what some reviewers write who arrogantly think their BBQ knowledge is end all be all) and the thinly sliced brisket was phenomenal. I barely had to use my knife to cut it. Had a side of Mac and Cheese that was fantastic, as was the cole slaw. Sweet tea and cornbread rounded out what amounted to an amazing meal. The service from the cute waitress (Beth) couldn't have been better and the way they serve the food - on a tray on a sheet of wax paper - was fun and inviting and made it feel like home. The 4 different sauces sitting in plastic bottles on the table were great to sample. I will HIGHLY recommend Black Hog and would love to buy their mustard BBQ sauce because its spicy bite made me want it for more options at home! read more

This is my second visit to this establishment and I have to say the second time is even better than the first. I was greeted with a smile seated and made aware the days special and suggestions on other menu items. I am pleased with the atmosphere and will make Black Hog my choice for BBQ whenever I'm in Frederick. read more

Black Hog BBQ - Two meat combo with pinto beans and greens, magically delicious!! - Barbeque Near Me - Frederick, Maryland

The reviews are legit. Terrance makes some good Q and is friendly enough to chat about his offerings ... my kinda cook/owner/manager/whatever he is ... just a cool dude. The Carolina Pork and the Pork Shoulder are both five star. I think the "beef tips" was the Arkansas BBQ ... whatever that was it was my favorite. Terrance told me I'd love the brisket too but it was dry and wasn't as flavorful as his other offerings. Mustard sauce is excellent with the Carolina Q. Mac and Cheese was above average ... but the beans were just standard fare. Mixed reviews on the banana creme pie and the coca cola cake ... but I felt they were both four star or better for a $3.50 item. Good stuff. Worth a drive and surely will consistently serve as a good spot for satisfying my BBQ needs. UPDATE: Second time I got the beef tips it was my least favorite. Pork shoulder and chopped pork remain great ... but the chili has emerged as the best dish and the gumbo is awesome also. read more

When I first checked this place out, I was a little worried about the cross-regional menu - BBQ folks can get very "regional" and typically ascribe to one particular style, like St. Louis, Memphis, South Carolina, Texas, etc. Much to my delight, this place does them ALL exceptionally well (with waiter service!). And it doesn't use garbage, ultra-processed buns like most BBQ places do - they only use high-quality ingredients. Very rare, again, amongst BBQ joints. They also serve beer - including Flying Dog!!! Yet another factor that just makes Black Hog BBQ superior. A couple tables out front and many inside. The specials are excellent - def. try them as this is a bit more upscale than most BBQ joints with accordingly slightly steeper prices. I find the sides to be of average quality in terms of taste but def. more premium quality raw ingredients are used - the real stand-out are the superb, house-cut fries. These cost extra when you order platters, but don't miss them! After a ton of success, they've opened up a second location in Ijamsville. I've been to dozens of BBQ places all across the country (a hobby of mine started after 5 years living in North Carolina) - Black Hog BBQ is really a special place. Tip: Don't miss out on the birthday special. read more

I've only been to this place once. I got a burger to go. It was pretty good and the prices are low. While I waited for my burger I wanted a beer bad as shit. My wife had been bitching about me drinking so much so I didn't want to bring home any alcohol. So I reached in my pocket and low and behold I forgot my fucking ID. so I flagged down the waitress and with my fingers crossed asked here what she had on tap. She skillfully named 20 beers I said I'll take a tall blue moon. She said no problem and didn't asked me for shit. I have a youngish face not like baby face Nelson and shit but never the less a young face. So shout out to black hog bbq even tho I don't eat pork for not uptight about ID I'm clearly over 21 so they did no wrong but some servers can be real asses when it comes to that. Thanks black hog. One of the best bbq places I've ever been to. I had the Arkansas brisket sandwich. Yummy! Beautiful flavor with a slight kick. Chris has the pulled pork meal. Amazing! Topped off with homemade banana cream pie! read more

It's a keeper. I haven't eaten in the restaurant, but we had them cater a lunch for a big customer meeting today. We had trays of beef brisket, pulled pork, mac&cheese, slaw, potato salad, greens with bacon, pinto beans and more. Customer's raved, even volunteered to drive an hour back out to our place for the next meeting as long as we ordered Black Hog again. Of note, our customers hailed from South Carolina (close enough to NC, right?), Texas, Iowa (close enought to Kansas City, right?), and more - and there was absolutely no fussing over "it's not real barbecue." Also of note - even the greens were a big hit. Great job by Mike Tauraso, of Tasting Room and Proof. We'll be back. read more

No better BBQ around...you could throw a dart at the menu and whatever you hit would be a winner. Had the brisket this time with Carolina sweet sauce and side of Mac n cheese with southern greens...incredible! read more

Just EAT HERE! It's great BBQ and you won't regret it. Here's the deal, I HATE chicken wings...my hubs is from Buffalo...we get wings everywhere and innate them all, even the original Buffalo wing place. I eat them here, dry rub and hot..oh so good! The drive is always great and the food is even better. read more

Wow. Yelp nailed it. Wouldn't have tried this place otherwise. Everything was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend you try the Arkansas beef. Also they have a good beer selection, friendly service, and quick turnaround. Will most definitely come back. read more

Great BBQ!! I love coming here on Tuesday for their rib special! Food is great and the staff is very nice and friendly! I pile recommend to any BBQ lover! read more

So this is very meat centric, so if that is what your craving then this is the place to go. That being said the sides are pretty weak.

Best ribs and potato salad tastes homemade! Best location in Frederick downtown! Never disappointing!

I am giving it two stars .. why ? I arrived today 1:05 the restaurant was colder inside than outside . I sat down very pleasant waitress I must say but I quickly scanned restaurant everyone was wearing winter jackets and hats please warm the place up love to actually come back and try the food read more

Stayed with friends in Gaithersburg this weekend and last night, all too tired to head into DC or cook for ourselves, we tried to think of someplace good for better than average comfort food. Once Black Hog was mentioned, there was no turning back. It's located in downtown Frederick, with plenty around to see and do, and is definitely worth a visit if you like good barbecue. I'm pretty skeptical of places that don't use real plates, but it works for this place. The food itself is amazing, although I would recommend sticking to just the meat and cornbread. While the sides were good, those were terrific and filling enough that you won't want anything else. Every table has an assortment of sauces for your dipping/basting pleasure. Try the Black Hog and Arkansas sauces, skip the Carolina unless you're a big fan of vinegar. Most places as "informal" as this tend to have mediocre service, but the staff here was friendly and attentive. No drink was ever empty and, once done, we only waited about 4 minutes total to get the check and pay. If you're looking for good barbecue, definitely try Black Hog at some point. You won't leave disappointed, or hungry. read more

Second visit to the black hog and I will give it an extra star. We came this past saturday and had the pup with us so we had to sit outside. We had about a 30 minute wait which wasnt a big deal. There's only 3 tables outside so it was understandable. The inside wasn't busy by any means. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Just an fyi they did change their menu so the one online is not valid anymore. The prices did slightly go up. I'd say about a dollar or two per meal. The white peach sangria was tasty although a bit weak on the alcohol. The punch drunk drink was only $8 and strong, loved it. There were 2 of us an we shared a 3 meat meal and got an extra side. We had the brisket, pork shoulder, and the carolina pork. All the meats were flavorful and good. The beans were good. The mac and cheese was lukewarm but we didnt complain because they gave us a size up because it was the last of what they had so that was nice. All in all we left full and happy. Our meal came to $39 bucks and we had 3 drinks so I dont think that was too bad. I will probably come again if in frederick. Its always a big plus to me when I can go somewhere and have the dog with us. read more

Great food ans service. Sat at the bar for dinner and started with dry rubbed wings, they had a sweet and spicy rub that was perfect. I then had a 2 meat combo of Chicken and Brisket. The brisket was mosit and the chicken had the same awesome dry rub. I travel alot for work and always try to fin BBQ places when I'm in a new town. This place was excellent and would go back if ever in town again read more

Let's get this out of the way first. I'm mainly a vegetarian. So how did I find myself inside of this BBQ joint late last month, you ask? Well, I went with a group that I had chosen the place in advance so I kind of didn't get any input. That said, no fear. I found things on the menu that I could eat & ordered a few sides: the Texas Pinto Beans & Rice and the Cole Slaw. I also got Chrissy's Cornbread which comes with 3 (small-ish) pieces of corn bread & butter. All was more than enough for me. Everything was delicious. A side of House Cut Fries was also ordered for the table which we shared. Those were great too. Someone at the table had the BBQ Chicken which looked really good. The meat was very white & the quality looked excellent. I was tempted to eat a small bite, but didn't. I don't know if I'd seek this place out again specifically, but I just might, because I really enjoyed the food. It's a very casual place as well & the food comes out very quickly. Also, the prices are excellent. The cost of my meal was $6.19 (before tax & tip). How can you beat that?! read more

Ok BBQ. The ribs were good the brisket was fair and was served barely warm. BBQ beans average and could have had more flavor. 3 stars is the max I can give. Service was friendly but at times slow. A lot of regulars grab the attention of the servers and you may be waiting. Never really felt overly welcomed. Atmosphere is very casual and a bit noisy. If your looking for world class BBQ this isn't it. Not much better than some of the chains. Please don't compare to good Memphis or Kansas City BBQ. Didn't take Amex. Bad for my expense account as a business traveler so can't come back based on that alone. read more

BEST BBQ in the region, by far. We bumped into this place after a sons baseball game, the one in Urbana and have been loyal fans ever since, usually at the Frederick location. Food - What's good - simply everything, really! The pulled pork shoulder is fantastic. The chicken is awesome, they're spice dusting is amazing. The smoked sausage is very tasty. The ribs, I get with BBQ and dry rub, are wow. The brisket is good, but not news worthy. They have several sauces available, each is unique and good in its own way. Ask for extra sauce with your meal, it comes out warm. Believe me you will not be disappointed. I will not go anywhere else anymore. I've converted a lot of people to this place in the last year or two. Service - extremely fast. You. Will get your food within minutes of ordering, I'm not kidding. We have ordered, eaten, and payed within 30 minutes for 6 of us. I've been in Panera longer. Only complaint, the Frederick location is really small, not many tables. If you don't get there by 5 or so, you will wait...and go crazy smelling the food. The Urbana store is slightly bigger and has a nice bar area. Oh and Monday is buy one pork sandwich get one free night, need I say more! read more

I went to this place very often Back in the days but prices way too high now food is hit or miss But if you get it on a good day The ribs are delicious but many times I had it when they just plane sucked never dined in so I don't know that experience chicken It's the same as the ribs hit or miss Talk to co-workers they said they have very good sandwiches but I have never tried So I have no opinion on that. Restaurant downtown Frederick is very small they do have another 1 that is bigger they serve beer . Every time I go in to get to go Everyone looks like they're having a good time read more

The food was good but the customer service was HORRIBLE! We catered for about 50 ppl - spent nearly $1k... LATE delivery, NO plates or serving utensils and NO cups or ice for the hot drinks!!! The manager could have spent $15 out of the store's take and gotten repeat business from us. Instead 50 ppl had to wait for someone to go out IN A RAINSTORM to buy these items! And he felt justified in not providing them saying we "should have asked" for something to eat the food with. Supreme disappointment! :( read more

Good BBQ joint. Nuff said. Well...maybe I can expand a little. Stopped by on a Friday night durring primetime and only waited 10 mins for a table for 2. Friendly staff met us right away. You have the option of the full dinning experience or takeout. Sat down and ordered a sweet tea and the two meat combo plate. The pulled pork and smoked brisket were amazing. I loved the Carolina sauce on my pork and dipped my crispy fries in the Kansas City and house Black Hog sauces. Prices seemed fair for the quality of food. Highly recommended, will dine there again. read more

Overall the food hits the spot. I come here often and I'm working my way through the menu. The meat is always cooked to perfection and there's a decent variety. On several occasions they've been out of what I was interested in, hence the subtracted star. You're a meat place...make enough ribs!!! The sides are also pretty good, though the fries could be better. They have a mixed platter where for $20 or so you can sample almost half the menu! read more

Pretty good for Frederick,MD. It's doesn't even come close to down south barbecue like Georgia or Florida but it's the only barbecue place I've had since I've been here and I've been here for six years now and I've been there several times and I guess it's pretty good considering where we are located you know here in Maryland it's just barbecue taste a lot different here then in Jacksonville Florida where I lived for about 20 years we are real big on our barbecue in the south read more

Overall is ok, but pricing is rather high and there are better BBQ places around for the standards. Cornbread is dry as a bone. Stop being so cheap! read more

I still find it incredibly tough to find barbecue in this area that I can say is really good. Black Hog is by no means bad- I would say it's above average BBQ for area. The pork was moist and fairly tasty, but the sauces were disappointing. I had fries for a side and found them to be fairly bland. The service was friendly and quick. They do have actual sweet tea, which is huge plus and a rarity this far north. read more

This place serves great food and there is a lot of it. Best BBQ in Frederick.

Good BBQ at a good price. The service is speedy which makes it perfect for a quick lunch. The brisket is delicious as is the cornbread. The coleslaw is shredded so fine the texture is not to my liking but the flavor is good though. I'll be back. read more

Usually very good food; except for the one time they sold me burned buns on my 'take-out' sandwich order which ruined lunch that day. Ya... folks. 'buns' matter especially on super costly barbecue sandwiches. However, that is not the reason for this review right now. About 2 or 3 times a year, I'll splurge and order 'take-out' of 2 barbecue sandwiches and a quart of slaw which generally runs about $35--ya pricy... but barely doable. HOWEVER, yesterday I called the exact same order in for carry out; and was told my price would now be $44 for the same lunch!! YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME! Sorry, that now has just turned into a huge rip-off in my opinion. So no more Black Hog for me now. Covid or not, sorry! read more

Fantastic ribs, collard greens, Mac and cheese. Good service and a nice atmosphere. Couldn't have been better!
