After flying dog brewery tour, we were in search of some GOOD food. Thanks to YELP we chose BHB! Most of the little shops in Frederick close so early (5 or 6 pm) so we couldn't even do any shopping prior to dinner. The town is super cute to walk around. The place was packed which is always a good sign. Waited about 15 min for a table for two which wasn't bad. They were quite efficient about getting people seated. We were starving so everything sounded wonderful! We eat got the ribs plus one meat item. I got the web ribs with pulled pork and side of mac and cheese which comes with cornbread. It was all to die for. Literally BBQ sauce all over my face. About 10 paper towels in I came up for air and tried by bf's food. Ribs were juicy and tender and falling off the bone. Mac and cheese had excellent flavor. Pulled porl was soooo tender and went great with the original BBQ sauce He got the dry ribs and beef brisket with beans and potato salad (and of course corn bread too). Again amazing. Dry ribs were amazing and tender as well. Potato salad had huge potato chunks with great flavor. Beans again with excellent flavor and could tell they were slow cooked. Would definitely recommend! read more

I have been spoiled. Back in the day, my family spent weeks of vacation travelling through the south, eating at every barbecue stand that we passed. Sounds like some amazing vacations, right? They were, but they ruined barbecue back home. It's rare that anything stacks up to my expectations of pulled pork and sweet tea. Once I discovered Black Hog, it instantly became my favorite (and most visited) restaurant in Downtown Frederick. So, whats good? EVERYTHING! I could write about the whole menu, but instead I'll just tell you a few favorites. I usually order the two-meat platter with pulled pork and Arkansas beef. If you are a first timer, definitely order a platter and try the different meat options. Everything is good and I promise you will find your favorite. For me, that is definitely the Arkansas beef. Try it and love it. As for sides, I'm a sucker for their ooey-gooey mac n cheese and the baked beans. And of course, the meal isn't complete without sipping on some sweet tea. What makes Black Hog unique is how they are able to combine authentic barbecue in a casual modern setting. The barbecue is top-notch and the restaurant offers as much ambiance as any DTF restaurant. Great eats and a great vibes. I can always use Black Hog to get my husband to take me on a date. Ultimate win! read more

I'll just start off by saying that if you're giving this place anything less than 5 stars you're wrong! The meat was smoked to perfection, the sauces were the right balance and the sides amazing. Walked right in on a Saturday night around 8pm and were seated immediately. Great service and a wonderful atmosphere. Situated in the heart of the downtown with lots of friendly locals. Thanks for a great dining experience :) read more

Black Hog BBQ - Three meat platter. Brisket, chicken and ribs. The dry rub is the best I've ever tasted as were the baked beans and cole slaw. - Barbeque Near Me - Frederick, Maryland

This is such a 4 star spot. I had memphis dry rub ribs and a burger on the side- great meal after driving from Brooklyn. Ive been to Memphis, had the dry rub- Black Hog were almost as good- very very close the only difference being Black Hog rub was a bit sweeter and spicy. Burger, not the best- stick with ribs or the bbq sangwich. I am a fan of Frederick in General, I think its an underrated city so I tend to be in a good mood when eating- but in any manner this place serves up some ill grub to lotsa people- and there is usually a line here. This place is such a 4 star place, not 5 cuz its just missing something- but its definetly not even close to a 3, if you eat here u will agree w me. read more

At first, I was a bit hesitant about going because I don't eat pork...but I love beef brisket. I grew up in Texas, so naturally I was curious about the taste of the Arkansas BBQ sandwich, which I ended up ordering. I came here on my coworkers suggestion for a business luncheon. I ordered the Arkansas BBQ Beef sandwich, a side of mac and cheese, and a piece of cornbread. The food actually came out pretty quickly and that beef in that BBQ sandwich was so tender, I couldn't help but pick off pieces with my fork. The sauce was tangy, sweet, and held a bold flavor. I'm taking one star off because I was disappointed with the cornbread, which I happen too look forward to eating at any BBQ restaurant. I felt like the cornbread was a little dry and bland. It was missing that moisture, cake like texture that really would have topped off this meal. It was the missing desert to my lunch and I just was left looking for more. Our service was excellent. The waitress kept my drinks filled and would always follow up on us. That being said, for a work lunch, the meal is quite filling and will do just fine. I would recommend this place to anyone. I didn't see a sign for any free wifi, but there is dedicated parking for customers. I hear in the evenings, parking is very difficult to find. The place was packed when we got there, but fortunately, we had no wait. We were greeted immediately when we walked in and fortunately a couple of my coworkers already were seated. I thought the atmosphere was welcoming, and very pleasant for sit down dining. Pricing is good. My meal cost me less than ten bucks and they offered sweet tea, which is one of my preferred drinks of choice. Overall, I'd recommend this place to anyone and would go back again if i had the chance. read more

Just had dinner here and had the Smoke Meat Triple platter. The Arkansas beef was very good with a nice little kick. The chicken was very very dry, and over cooked. Also, the dry rub ribs were all burnt and pretty much unedible. After this bad meal I thought the dessert would save the day, but the coconut pie had no flavor, and the filling had lumps. I was looking forward to eating here after reading al the good reviews, but I will ot give this a second try. This was a bad experience. read more

Second time here and absolutely delicious. Between the five of us we tried almost every meat on the menu and they all were amazing. Mac and cheese, greens, tater salad and coleslaw made the meal even better. I have read reviews complaining about small sides but I think it's just the right amount to compliment the meat. No kids menu but I was able to feed my two kids with one meal (2 meats and 2 sides). We will be here on a regular basis. Best BBQ in Frederick area. This place compares to Dinosaur BBQ in upstate NY and that is a huge compliment. read more

My sweetie and I were less than 10 minutes away and merely looking for an interesting place nearby to have lunch. We couldn't have been happier. It was a pleasure to find easy parking in downtown Frederick (thanks to its private lot behind the restaurant). The atmosphere was surreal. The waitress was friendly and helpful. The menu was easy to understand. Every dish we had there was amazing. Just in case you don't know what to order, I'll share what I had and if it appeals you can order it. We both ordered the "Ribs & 1 Meat" variation of the "Combo Meal", but we chose different meats. She chose the Arkansas Brisket, and I chose the Smoked Pork Shoulder. She ordered her ribs "wet", meaning they included the house BBQ sauce pre-applied. Just to try everything, I ordered mine "dry" which was totally new to me. I ate half of my three ribs "dry" before applying the house BBQ sauce which was served at the table, in addition to the cup of it they included on my platter. The cup of sauce was similar to the unlabeled house BBQ sauce at the table, and both were amazing. Side dishes: They were all winners. From best to worst: Sweet Potatoes, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, and Southern Greens. The greens were actually tasty, but as amazing as the other sides were, I'd probably order two sweet potatoes and the other two next time. DESSERT: Peanut Butter Pie! I'd never had it before, but my sweetie recommended it. WOW! I don't want to say it was the best thing we had. It was simply unbelievable. I'd consider swinging by this restaurant just for the pie, but I don't think I could stop at just the pie though! Regrets: My only regret is finding a place this good so far from DC that it would be difficult to schedule one of my social gatherings here. I suppose though that if I have a reason to meet friends here, such as one of the Frederick steam-punk gatherings, I'll now have a really great "favorite restaurant" to invite my friends to. read more

I made the drive up here to get a taste of true Carolina-style barbecue. Of course, being a native, I'm picky.... although I have to admit Black Hog nailed it! I ordered a barbecue sandwich with fries while my boyfriend had the three-meat plate with two sides (Carolina barbecue, brisket, and Arkansas beef barbecue with macaroni and cheese and baked beans). The bun was toasted and buttery, the barbecue was cooked and chopped perfectly, and the vinegar-based sauce tasted like home. The slaw was a great, creamy complement to the vinegar sauce. I could go on and on about the barbecue, but I get that not everyone is into the Carolina style. Fortunately, Black Hog delivers on other fronts, too. The handcut fries were delicious and the sides were very good, although a little small to me; however, you get a ton of meat, so you aren't likely to leave hungry. Our waitress was extremely nice, too. One of my best finds in Frederick! read more

I just wanted to post an update. I have noticed that the owners must either read Yelp, the Frederick food blogs, and/or generally listen to their customers. They have changed so many things for the better since the first time we've eaten there. The Mac and Cheese used to be dry and just ok, now it's cheesy cheesy goodness. The bread used to be an uninspired slice of white bread, now it's a thick slab of yummy corn bread. The Carolina pork used to be knocked for not being smokey enough, now you can taste a ton of smoke. I just want to send out a big THANK YOU to the owners for listening and updating. I'm now giving you five stars because it's awesome that you care enough to make these changes. read more

I drove up from Leesburg to Fredrick to try this place out. Originally from Memphis, which is often referred to BBQ home, so I'm pretty picky. This place sounded great and had great reviews so I did the 40 min drive up and tried the ribs and fries and beans. The ribs were obviously store bought and had very very little meat on them, almost 2 stars worthy. The fries were good, the beans were good and I loved the Kansas sauce. Overall decent place but certainly not even close to great BBQ. I've had BBQ all over the US from high-end places to whole-in-the-wall places to backyard home cooking and even at fairs and competitions. This wouldn't hold a candle to even some of the worst of them. I won't be back, needless to say unless I just happen to be on that street and happen to be starving and craving BBQ, then I might go in there with my expectations low. ;) read more

I don't live in Frederick and typically don't have much reason to be in the area. But when I'm here around dinner time - I'm thinking Black Hog! Here is how it works for me. I order the 2 or 3 meat combo. They put the plate in front of me and I think, "This isn't very much food." About 20-30 later I'm thinking, "I don't know if I'm going to be able to finish all this food." I should probably mention the food is really tasty too. They have a few different BBQ sauces on the side of each table. These are not simple variants of a base sauce. Each one has a unique profile. I suggest you try them all. One final note - kudos to them for having the private parking lot in back meaning you can avoid street parking. read more

While the BBQ was really delicious compared to other places I've been to, it was annoying to have to wait so long for service. Don't get me wrong--when we were tended to, the waitress was very friendly, but that doesn't excuse 10 minute waits just to flag someone down. Lucky for you, Black Hog of rare deliciousness, feeding time made up for mediocre service. 3 meat platter is a big enough portion for two people who are not starving, but hungry for a meal. My favorite meat was the brisket, and other winners is the sausage and pulled meat. The sides are equally delicious--mac and cheese and beans highly recommended. read more

Holy mother of BBQ where have you been all my life!? My hubby and I were planning on visiting another local BBQ place but it was sold out when we arrived. After yelping, we saw this place and decided to try it. I am SO GLAD the other place was sold out! Not only were we seated right away during lunch rush, the food was so amazing we didn't even have time to take a picture of it! I LOVED the Arkansas brisket, dry ribs, and baked beans. I didn't want to share with my hubby but I exchanged some for his pork. I don't even think we talked during this meal. Now that I look back, we probably looked like two people who never ate meat before and realized it was the best thing ever. I have no regrets. The food was warm and had an amazing smokey flavor to it. Even without the sauce, this food is yummy. As for sauce, don't put any on your food other than the Kansas City one. BY FAR my favorite. I thought I would like the Carolina but it was too vinegary. I wasn't a fan of the original but that might be because my husband's food was drenched in it. I don't care who you are or what you're doing in Frederick, stop what you're doing and eat here. You might have heartburn later, but totally worth it. Service: A Food: A Environment: A read more

While passing through Frederick on my baseball journeys, I wandered across Black Hog BBQ. The immediate appeal to me was simply the fact that they had a parking lot, and I wouldn't have to park on the street, where I watched lots of people questionably drive, and occasionally go on the wrong way of a one-way street. The pleasant smell of barbecue emanated from the place as soon as I got out of my car, and I was pleased to know that I had literally just beaten the dinner rush by like ten minutes; I was seated immediately with no wait, but the place filled up fairly quickly afterward. I ordered a two-meat platter of beef brisket and chopped Carolina pork, with sides of mac and cheese, and collard greens. Obviously since we're dealing with barbecue, lots of it is mostly pre-cooked, so there was little wait for my order to get to me. It was all served on a platter with baking sheets. The brisket is tender and melts in your mouth, and it served dressed in their house bbq sauce. The chopped pork comes tangy, and definitely a fair representation of Carolina style. The variety of sauces they have at the tables is something I enjoyed a lot. They really do a good job of capturing the varying regions of bbq, and between the four choices of house, Carolina, KC, and Texas mustard, I have to say I was enamored by the Texas spicy bbq mustard the most. All were sufficient, but I found myself repeatedly going back to the mustard, dipping everything I could in it. The cornbread is something on the side that might go unnoticed, but I found it to be really good cornbread; not overly crumbly, but at the same time not spongy and cake like. It maintained a good flavor, and didn't require any butter, although I found myself dipping it in more Texas mustard, because I liked it that much. My sides were adequate, and probably what brings my review down from four from five. The mac and cheese was nothing spectacular, and a tad on the bland side. And the greens were cooked in pork juice, but it's like somewhere in the stewing, it lost all its bite, and didn't have nearly enough tangyness to its flavor. They were alright, but nothing to call home about. Overall, Black Hog BBQ is a great success of a find while traveling. Large, free parking, clean and simple interior, nicely air-conditioned and not feeling that swampy air feeling that lots of bbq joints tend to have. Friendly staff, quick order-to-table turnaround time, and high quality bbq, albeit mediocre sides. Portions are just right, and the prices are fair. Would definitely come back again. read more

I'm southern. When someone tells me there's good barbecue here in the Mid Atlantic, I take it with some skepticism. BHB is good - for Mid Atlantic standards but, overall, it's not great. I ordered the brisket along with the Arkansas barbecue. For a side, I had the potato salad. I thought that the brisket wasn't that flavorful. I was also assuming that it would be Texas style, without sauce, but there was sauce and it was necessary because I didn't think the meat was that flavorful. It was also not that moist. Over all, I'd say the brisket was a miss. The Ark BBQ was much better. I've never had BBQ from Arkansas but I'm hoping it tastes like it did at BHB. It was flavored much better and didn't need anything with it. They give you a little bit of pickle on the side but I think barbecue should come with onions, jalapenos, and a helping of sandwich bread as it does in Lockhart, TX (a place they refer to in their restaurant). It's just common courtesy to have those things. There's nothing wrong with being just okay. After all, Matt Schaub and Joe Smith are just okay! read more

wow, what a find.... Cruising Market St looking for a quick lunch and saw this place and screeched in to a parking spot. At noon the place was already packed with a lunch crowd. The waiter said the brisket and pulled pork were the go-to's so we ordered both, along with cole slaw and the hand-cut fries, which seemed special. The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth yummy, the pork real tasty too, with some nice crispy edges. Cole slaw was creamy and a bit on the bland side. The hand-cut fries, which are a "premium" side, you have to buy up to them, were plentiful but there were far too many nubs and runts in the bunch. Service was fast, friendly and efficient and the food came out hot and fast. We will definitely be back. Best I've had in this area in a while. read more

Black Hog BBQ - Pulled pork and arkansas sammie!! - Barbeque Near Me - Frederick, Maryland

We stumbled on Black Hog in a random trip to downtown /Historic Frederick... the smell of BBQ in the air led us right to the spot on the edge of the historic district. Black Hog is everything you would want in a modern BBQ place.... cool decor, but nothing fancy and wood bench tables out front to enjoy a nice day.... which we did. The menu is traditional bbq- offering brisket, pork and chicken in both full portions as well as on sandwiches. The sides were traditional to and included slaw, potato salad, greens and the like. We started off with an order of wings with traditional buffalo sauce and they were meaty with a great, tangy sauce. I had the 1/2 order of the chicken and a side of greens...the chicken had a great rub on it and tasted great with the various bbq sauces that I doused it with. Black Hog's selection includes both North Carolina (nah) and Kansas City (YES!) styles at the table as well as their own spicy blend....which was a little thin for my taste. The greens at first tasted a little bland but as I ate them I found most of the flavor and spices towards the bottom of the cup...once I got there, they tasted great.. So, on a nice, sunny day in historic Frederick I will certainly recommend Black Hog. The service was great and they also have burgers and a full selection of beers and the always coveted sweet tea. Go get it. read more

BBQ, YUMMMM! This is pretty good bbq spot in frederick. they do run out of some food so dont go late.

You put a picture of a pig on the sign of a barbeque joint and I'm in. Black Hog BBQ is just that kind of place and it does not disappoint. The food is great, the options plentiful and the atmosphere is pretty laid back. I ordered the Carolina chopped pork and ¼ chicken platter with coleslaw, mac and cheese, and fries. The chopped pork was amazing. It was just the right amount of everything. The chicken was okay, a bit on the dry side and somewhat heavy on the dry seasoning. The coleslaw was really good, and a perfect balance to all the bbq. The mac and cheese was pretty good. The fries were extra crispy on the outside and almost like mashed potatoes on the inside. Great texture. I liked it overall and would definitely be back in the future. Especially for that chopped pork and coleslaw. read more

Tight place but food was awesome. Having a large group might be an issues since most table allow 4 seating.

He said," wow...well besides the bitter cold outside that reminds you that you are still in Maryland..all it took is one bite into the BBQ ribs I ordered and I thought I was back in South Carolina. This place knows how to do BBQ. From the hand pulled pork, not machine pulled to the mac and cheese. This place gives you large portions that will fill you up. Everything was great including the service. This place lets the food speak for itself. We will probably go there like once a week to pig out...yea we will." She said, "Yummmm....this place is Delish! I got the pulled pork sandwich and mac and cheese and let me just say it was amazing. The sandwich was huge filled with lots of pork but it was very good and i finished it all. The pork tasted very fresh and real...not like those other cheap places. The mac and cheese is homemade so it tastes just like it came out of the oven and not the microwave. Group of 6 went in for dinner on 4th of July and I guess it was a bad idea. The BBQ was dry and mediocre at best. They were out of ribs & chicken and beer, lol. I was so excited to see a BBQ spot with such rave reviews but walked away so disappointed! I really wanted to give them 5 stars! I really really did! Hands down one of our favorite restaurants in Frederick so far. It seems like we have tried BBQ all over the state of MD (which seems like an oxymoron in itself - MD BBQ but whatever), and this one definitely is head and shoulders above all the rest. If you are in MoCo, it's definitely worth the drive to Frederick county. Live a little. Pretty much everything we have tried over the course of multiple visits is succulent and delicious. Our go-tos are the pulled pork shoulder, the Carolina chopped, and the ribs (wet, of course). The smoked sausage was also very good. One thing that I never really thought was as up to par was the brisket, but other people swear by it so... I was floored by the burger - it was juicy, flavorful, and absolutely perfect. The sides are also amazing. I haven't had better potato salad in my life, I swear. We also favor the mac and cheese and the sweet potatoes. Reminds me that I need to branch out and try some of the others because I'm sure they will be just as good. Service is friendly but not overbearing and very fast. This place is a true downtown Frederick gem. read more

While there is certainly better BBQ to be had in the DelMarVa region, Black Hog is by far one of the most family friendly, sit down places. We stayed away when they initially opened due to lukewarm reviews, but had heard from friends that they had recently turned the bend. Suffice it to say, we liked it so much the first time we went a month ago that we've since been back twice. The various traditional meats (pork, beef brisket, baby back ribs) all received positive reviews from the various peeps in our parties. There's lots more we haven't yet tried -- like the pit ham and smoked beef sausage. As I'm not much of a red meat eater, I went with the chicken, which was very good both times. While I much prefer an actual smoked chicken, the Black Hog's rubbed and grilled birds were mighty tasty. They offer several sauces at the table (bonus points for no stinginess here -- it always irks me when places dole out the sauce in tiny plastic cups). Preferences at our table varied by personal taste, but all were considered above average. The Black Hog signature sauce was a personal favorite. As for the sides, I thoroughly enjoyed the greens and the fresh cut fries. The cornbread is above average and better than Texas toast! The cole slaw and mac & cheese are both decent, but unmemorable. The beans and rice was fairly blah. Desserts -- we only tried the Cocacola Cake, which we've had many times passing through the Carolinas and BBQ joints in the midSouth. By comparison, their version was sub par -- a bit dry and the icing too sweet. YMMV. Service was perfectly good, considering that we've always visited during peak weekend hours. Sure, we've had to wait a spell for a table but there were seats at the bar and it was well worth the wait. If I had one gripe, it was that they have big screen TVs in the dining room. While I'm indifferent when these are tuned to a sporting event, etc., there was some sort of grisly crime drama during our 2nd visit. When I pointed out that murder scenes were not likely very appetizing to diners, our young waiter seemed completely oblivious. Overall, a fun and tasty choice at budget prices for historic downtown Frederick. Not necessarily the best choice for the hardcore BBQ purist (although they'll appreciate eating off the paper sheets), but not likely to offend one either. read more

I grew up in the DC suburbs with no Southern relatives, so I can't regale you with stories to establish my barbeque cred, like "I was raised in a smokehouse", or "my father was half-human, half-mesquite," or "my grandpappy put house-made Carolina vinegar in my bottle." I can tell you, however, that I've eaten at a LOT of BBQ spots 'round these parts and that Black Hog's the best of them. Everything here is top-notch. The sauces are great, especially the thick, tangy mustard and the delicious Kansas City sauce that's smoky-sweet, rich and thick - so good I'd order it as a drink, if that were a publicly acceptable option. The meats are all delicious, but my particular favorites are the Arkansas beef ( slightly spicy beef cubes cooked like end pieces, with an almost jerky-like flavor at times), the brisket (amazingly tender and flavorful), and the pork shoulder (moist and smoky, a perfect vehicle for the aforementioned sauces). You can (and should) also get a fantastic burger and if you hate making decisions (in your defense, who can choose between all this deliciousness?), you can even add any of their BBQ meats on top for one of the best burgers you'll ever have. As if those weren't enough, the beer selection here is great (a nice selection of 20 or so craft beers) and the staff are friendly, nice, and quick. There aren't a lot of restaurants that make your mouth water days later, but the Black Hog is high atop that list. read more
