Wow.
Went here (and to Frederick) for the first time yesterday on my long Westward drive back from the Baltimore area to Leesburg. First off, if you haven't been to the downtown area of Frederick, its a neat little place with all kinds of shops and places to eat. It's a nice little walkable area that looks like it would be fun to explore.
Well, I didn't have time to explore the town... but I did come to town to EAT. After passing by several places that looked good, I came all the way down to the end of the strip and found my destination... Black Hog BBQ. I walked on in and went up to the counter and asked if I should just seat myself or what. The lady behind the counter said I could pick any seat I like. Okey Dokey... found a spot and immediately an extremely nice waitress came over and gave me a menu, took my drink order. She was so ridiculously nice I almost felt like I was somewhere down south and not just an hour or so outside DC! Throughout the entire meal, she really made me feel like I was welcomed in their establishment and kept my drink topped off, made sure the food was good, etc. :)
I asked her some questions about the menu which she was happy to answer, and then I decided on a BBQ beef sandwich -- arkansas style. Arkansas style, as explained to me, was they take their smoked beef, chop it into cubes, and add sauce, and then cook it again with the sauce on. Sounds like a similiar process to burnt ends if you ask me... but you're not, so ignore me and focus on the beef.
So yeah, I ordered the Beef sandwich... no sides, because I thought the sandwich would be real big and I didn't want to pig out for fear I might get mistaken for an actual pig and get put on the smoker.... so the waitress, just to ensure I had all information at my disposal informed me that since it was Wednesday, they had a special going... 2 beef sandwiches, 2 sides... for $15 -- a savings of about $5 or so if my math is correct.
Well, I appreciate the information lady, but I ain't no pig! Just the sandwich for me, thanks.
It was sooooo freaking good. I think I can honestly say it's the best "beef" bbq sandwich I can remember eating.... and I remember a lot of beef bbq sandwiches!
Well, I must have looked like a fool with egg on my face once I got to licking my fingers after devouring that sandwich. I put my tail between my legs and beckoned the waitress to come over.... "Is it too late to get that 2 sandwich special?" She kinda chuckled at me and gave me some kind of told ya so with a smile. She said she was going to see what she could do. So she pulled some strings with the person in charge, got my first sandwich voided and put the special in for me. I got a side of fries to eat there (with their AMAZING Kansas City style BBQ Sauce) and had the second sandwich bagged up with rice and beans to go.
All in all, it was a great experience.
I would mention the other specials in detail, but if you look through the pictures someone took a picture of the special board. Monday - pork, Tuesday - ribs/wings, Wednesday - beef, is the quick n dirty. They also had 2 dolla drafts while I was there, but I wasn't drinking since I still had a lot of driving to do and I'm a responsible adult like that.
Normally I would complain about the prices since they were a little bit pricier than your typical bbq spot... but after eating the food and experiencing the excellent service, I felt I got my money's worth.
Thanks Black Hog BBQ. You probably ruined my chances of eating anywhere else in Frederick. ;) read more
