We dig BBQ, I mean we really really love some slow smoked charred meat. The pork at BHB was just okay, not offensive or terrible by any means, just not as good as we were anticipating given fellow Yelpers's reviews. Can't speak to anything else since all 6 of us opted for the pork but all of us lamented that it seemed especially greasy and didn't have any smokey flavor. Will give it another try next time we're nearby. read more

Let's just get it right out front: Black Hog is perfectly serviceable barbeque. Reasonable portions, a decent amount of smoke, good flavor. We ordered up some dry-rub Memphis-style ribs and chopped Carolina pork. The ribs were a little dry overall for my personal taste - not at all bad, but I prefer a little moister meat and these were getting crispy around the edges. The rub could use a touch more salt, and had a noticeable hit of cayenne, so be warned if you're not a fan of spice. The Carolina-style chopped pork was moist and flavorful, but a little over-salted. Generous application of sauce was able to remedy that, and you're given a choice of "Original" tangy, St. Louis sweet-n-spicy, North Carolina vinegar and chili pepper, or South Carolina mustard sauce. The last two are your best bet with this meat selection. I really liked their collard greens - tender, sweet, with a little red pepper flake for spice. A dash of that N. Carolina vinegar sauce on top, and I not only finished every last scrap but gulped the pot-likker. Cole slaw was nicely seasoned, but I prefer mine coarsely shredded and this was very finely chopped - though they did do a good job of keeping it from being a watery mess. Again - this is a personal texture preference. I prefer crunch to squish. Prices are affordable, there's table service, and they have a full bar too if you want a beer or mixed drink. All in all, a pretty solid BBQ choice and a good choice for an informal lunch. read more

Black Hog does it again! This place is the biz, had the BHB triple which is chicken, ribs and a choice of meat. I had the sausage as my third choice, and of course it was awesome. But the star of the show was the dry rub ribs, they rivaled the ones I had at Rendezvous in Memphis, and I did not have to endure a pee pee smell on my way through entrance! Go Frederick!!! read more

It's been almost a year since my friend and I rolled up on Black Hog BBQ. I don't remember having the highest expectations but just wanted some good BBQ. Black Hog was definitely more than we expected. Just looking at the pictures makes me want to hop in my car and drive back down. We arrived late afternoon just before the dinner rush. I noticed some sweet sounding daily specials on the board as we waited to order. I wanted to eat everything on the menu it all looked so good. I went with a two meat plate, selecting the Arkansas BBQ and pulled pork. I went with two sides, mac n cheese and potato salad. These fine items were accompanied by a can of Cheerwine and a piece of cornbread. I tried the 4 different sauces available but just a taste because the meat really stands on its own. The presentation is simple (the meat is served on paper on a plastic tray with all your sides) but believe me, the taste is not. Black Hog BBQ was a great place to stop before a Keys baseball game. read more

This is my Hubs favorite place in the DC/MD metropolitan area. He likes the cole slaw, but thinks it needs celery seed added. Next time he goes, he will bring his own! LOL read more

Made a repeat visit to Black Hog last Saturday night and was very please yet again! Of course we had didn't think ahead and they were out of several items. I do not fault them for this at all! It is a BBQ place most of these things are slow cooked and take time, I would rather it remain this way then get dry reheated food. Plus there was a swine-tastic BBQ festival in Frederick that day so I am sure they were very busy. We tried the brisket and mustard wings. Both were very good! The only thing I was a little baffled by was the extra charge for fries with a combo....? It is .75 cents extra for fries. Of course, loving the fries we did it, plus not like $.75 is going to break the bank. Just a little confused. The plan for next time, and YES there will be a next time, is to go during the day so we can try all the yummy stuff that sells out! read more

Definitely good BBQ but the portions were smaller than I imagined so had to get more! The ribs and pulled pork were my favorite and I loved the fact that they had a lot of sauces to choose from. read more

Pretty decent bbq place. I got the brisket sandwich which I didn't like at all; it tasted boiled and not smoked. The BBQ beef sandwich was very good though, it's smoked twice and had a good bbq sauce over it. The wings were also fantastic! We got the honey mustard wings which had such a unique and good flavor and the dry run ones were good as well. read more

Arkansas Beef and KC Style Dry Rub ribs are the standouts here. The rest was good, however I found that while the brisket was flavorful it was a bit dry and, comparatively speaking to my top brisket restaurant, it wasnt anywhere near as flavorful. I enjoyed their mustard sauce and the KC style sauces the most on my meat platter. When I go back I may just indulge in a rack of KC style dry rub ribs as those were the best tasting on the platter for me. Tender, flavorful, dry rub was just right in terms of sweet and heat and the meat was cooked to perfection. When Im in the area, if I have more than just a few hours, I will be back to get some more good BBQ. read more

I'm a sucka for bbq. especially pulled pork. it just might be my cocaine. so when I was in Frederick and heard about this place, I couldn't resist. it is off the beaten path a bit. but sometimes the best places aren't where most people go. somehow, that makes them better. this is the case with black hog. I was surprised to see they also have their own brand of beer when I walked in. however, I can't speak to how good it is since I was driving and did not partake of it. I looked over the menu and quickly ordered a sampler platter. because sometimes when it comes to bbq it's hard to decide on just one type of meat. the service was fast, even though it has a relaxed atmosphere. something I appreciated since I was running a bit late for an appointment. the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs were mouthwateringly wonderful. meaty, juicy, and flavorful. seasoned to perfection. too bad they couldn't hook me up to an IV of their protein. read more

Best barbecue in this area. Might leave something to be desired, but my husband is from Memphis so I'm spoiled. If you go during the peak times there is usually a wait which I normally wouldn't have a problem with, but the layout of this place makes it so that you are standing either right in front of the door, or practically over someone's table. The meats are all fantastic but the sides are ridiculously small. My husband and I always share a three meat platter and for the sides we like (the mac n cheese is amazing) we always have to order two since they are NOT sharing size. Overall we have eaten at Black Hog a dozen times or so and will definitely continue to eat there anytime we head up tp Frederick. read more

So just browsing through the Yelp whilst on travel for BBQ and this place had Arkansas BBQ!! Grew up in Arkansan, I figured, well let's compare. Got here a late in the evening, about 30 min before close, and it was half full. :) Food came out very quick and good portions sizes. Could have been a little hotter, But who's complaining?? This place has great BBQ and sense I'm a Southern boy but born in DC I felt right at home. I've had BBQ in San Antonio, St. Louis, west coast and Deep South. Yes you should come here to eat, GREAT SPOT!! read more

Black Hog BBQ - Dry rub wings and ribs. Wet ribs and mustard wings. All mine so fine. - Barbeque Near Me - Frederick, Maryland

Good, not wow. Potato salad is tasty. Beans were blah. Greens were decent. Cornbread just ok. Meat (all types, we were a family group & shared family style)....honestly kind of dry and just this side of cold. The dry rub ribs were tender if lacking in wow factor. Having a selection of BBQ sauces at the table is nice. Can mix them to find your own blend. Cheerwine is always a plus. Meh. Not bad, but we'd go elsewhere when seeking really good BBQ. read more

Completely unremarkable but acceptable. The Mac and Cheese could've been better but the staff was very kind and friendly. Worth a shot if you're nearby and in the mood for this type of food. read more

Solid bbq spot. Nothing out of this world amazing but I have never had anything here that was disappointing. And their wing night special on Tuesdays (I think?) is pretty great. Meats are good and stellar lemonade. read more

I dont live in Frederick, but I saw a decent crowd at this place so I decided to give this place a try. I got the two meat special and I got two briskets. Yes...two meats, but who says it has to be different meats. It was soft and juicy, but I like my meat a little fattier or if I could have requested the bark or ends.....OMG. I dont like using OMG or other shorten forms of words like LOL , but OMG is the only way I could describe fatty brisket. read more

The side items aren't that good. The Mac n' cheese tasted like they used powder cheese. The potato salad was similar to those you can find in a supermarket. But the ribs and wings were very good. We ordered half dry and half with sauce. The table has six other house sauces you can use. It was $15 for a rack of rib on Tuesdays. If they improve the side items it'll be five stars. The service was fast and friendly. I would come back. read more

OK, I am from Central Texas where Lockhart, Texas is located. On the wall of Black Hog, they recognize Lockhart as a BBQ King in the U.S. Is Black Hog as good as Texas BBQ- not quite, but this ain't Texas and I will say that Black Hog was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the brisket and it beat many Texas BBQ places I have been to and it is certainly one of the three best that I have had in the DC area. Why 5 stars if it is not quite as good as Black's BBQ, Franklin's BBQ in Texas? We ain't in Texas, so if you want great DMV BBQ, you will not be disappointed! Service was good and they had ample parking. It is within a short walk of the scenic downtown walk along the creek. read more

Went for ribs on Tuesday night. They have a $15 whole rack and a side special. Ribs were OK, but I am very picky since I make my own on a smoker at home. Most people would probably think that they were very good. Pulled pork is very good here. Sides are good, but small. Desserts are expensive. I like the atmosphere and service a lot. read more

I live in Texas and this place has some of the best BBQ I've ever had! The pulls pork was incredible, the corn bread was sweet and not too dense, and the flavor and consistency of the rice and beans were perfect. There was a low fire that creeps up while eating from the sauce that is tempered by the sweetness and the smokeyness from all the food. Great place to relax, have some good chow and down some beers. read more

Great BBQ! Stopped on the way back home for lunch, we were lucky we got there at noon, as it filled up quick and had a wait by the time we left. We had ribs, brisket and both were amazing along with the fries, Mac & cheese and southern greens! Great service, polite, and attentive! read more

The pork is great and prices aren't too high. My only complaint is the mac n cheese could be better for a barbeaue place. But overall good and worth going back. read more

The service here is usually good and consistent but kind of no frills and I am fine with that. I don't think I have ever had anything that I didn't like. I really prefer that I can get a sauce that has more vinegar than sugar and the sides take it over the top. read more

So good! The service was good and super quick. I got the Carolina bbq sandwich and it tasted just like eastern NC bbq which is impressive. The mac and cheese was creamy and we'll seasoned and they have 2 kinds of slaw (the creamy was perfect on my sandwhich). My husband got the chopped pork and beef brisket and he thought it was good - the sauces are the best part. Highly recommend this place! read more

I had the BBQ pulled pork - with a side of baked beans. First off - the restaurant is totally cute on the outside, clean and airy on the inside, furnished very nicely, brick walls, nice bar set in the back. Each table has a roll of paper towels, some mustard, sweet BBQ sauce. The service was very friendly and it smelled great inside. The pulled pork had a nice vinegary sauce (not as sweet as what I'm used to) with a side of corn bread and my beans. The beans are homemade, with nice bits of pork, and a subtle smoky flavor. The pork was juicy, tender and the sauce was a perfect complement. For dessert I had the peach pie, which was good, but still a far cry from Mission Pie's. Overall a great spot in the historic downtown of Frederick! I left with a huge smile. read more

Stopped at black hog barbecue on the way to Yonkers via DC last night. My wife and I loved it. The brisket was excellent although I didn't see a smoke ring which suggests that it wasn't cooked so long or it wasn't smoked but the taste and consistency was just right. I also has some dry ribs which I thought could have done without the spicy powder that was thrown on after they were cooked. The baked beans were excellent and the bottomless lemonade was much appreciated after a long drive. The bartender was very friendly (we were at the bar because we didn't want to wait) Overall four stars. We had a very enjoyable dinner and would race back if we were in the area again. read more

I finally made it to the Black Hog and enjoyed the food and the place very much. I wish that there were a Black Hog in Montgomery County to compete with Urban BBQ, which I do enjoy but find inconsistent. My fellow Yelpers were very helpful in pointing out that the Hog does different types of barbecue well. I opted for the brisket and thought it was very good, albeit a little fatty on a couple of slices. The potato salad was dynamite, while the cornbread was very good, but not great. If I were to do it over, I'd opt for another side and also probably try the 2 meats option. Price-wise, I think the Black Hog is a decent value, and would be a great value if they offered their daily specials before 5 pm. Overall, I really liked the place, with very good service and a solid varied menu for barbecue, read more

I love good BBQ, and I am VERY picky about my BBQ. Needless to say I gave this place 4 stars because of the taste of the food, the good service, and ambience (who cares about ambience?). The sauces were tasty (four style choices, Kansas City, North Carolina, Texas, and Original...if my memory serves me right) and the meat was very tender and had good flavor. I like fall off the bones ribs, these were not but the meat was still tender. Pulled pork was also really good. The sides were good overall. A step above most places but not the best. Service was good and staff was friendly, we got there early and there was plenty of parking behind the restaurant on a weekday at lunch time. Not sure what it's like at other times. Ambience was cool, very small inside, I'm sure it could get packed in there at busy times. Best BBQ I have still had was in Arkansas. read more

Sweet n spicy. Picnic-style. Modern. A perfect place for a lunch stop on the way out of DC. The pulled pork was a fave across the board - from a six year old boy to the more seasoned of the gang. We practically drank the bottles of Kansas City + Carolina sauces. And gluten-free to boot. Small but well-paired beer + wine selection - the Chardonnay surprised me. read more

Black Hog BBQ - Dry rub ribs and the wet one with potoato salad and bake beans. - Barbeque Near Me - Frederick, Maryland

Probably the worst BBQ I have had in a few years. This is below chain BBQ restaurants. Each meat ordered was dry. The sauce could have been substituted with generic BBQ sauce from Giant and I would not have known the difference. Hell, the sauce on hot food was COLD. Like it was slapped on without an ounce of give-a-crap. The service was slow, and I don't think there was even a thank you as I paid for my order. Save yourself time and money and just go get a McRib when it comes back to McDonalds, or a tub of pulled pork or chicken from Costco read more

Black Hog BBQ has a casual ambiance with a nice bar to have a few drinks before a meal. There is even free parking on premise. We went on Tuesday Rib Night. One rack of the tender & meaty St. Lewis rib (12 bones, $17.95) was filling enough to share with my young son. We also ordered 8 good size wings with BBQ sauce. We finished all of the wings but still had 4 ribs left over. We ordered the ribs "wet" (slathered in relatively spicy sauce). For those who don't like spicy, test the sauce before ordering "wet". It was pretty spicy after a few bites! The wings were grilled so they were slightly crispy. The accompanying BBQ sauce was not spicy so a big relief for those who don't like heat! The food was very good and you cannot beat the price of the ribs! Do try them out! read more

The downtown Frederick Black Hog BBQ was a first time stop for our group of four today, and we'll be returning for the excellent food and fantastic service. The ribs were the best I can remember having, just the right combination of taste and tender texture. The potato salad and cornbread were top notch, too. My fellow diners raved about the smoked beef brisket, the mac n cheese, and the southern style greens. Making this an especially pleasant outing was our server, Fernando (?), who briefly shared some of the history and selling points of Black Hog's preparation. His attentiveness was impressive. read more

I've been to all three locations (Urbana, downtown Frederick, and by the Wegmans/Wormans Mill area) and they're all different, but serve the same great product. Their happy hour is always solid. I've never felt uncomfortable just sitting at the bar having a snack and a beer. Their beer selection is decent enough, although I do think it would be worthwhile if they were to try and expand that selection a bit more and bring in some more local stuff. From what I'm told, the owners of Black Hog also own The Tasting Room, which is a pretty high end restaurant in town. I've been there as well and it's very good, but it's expensive. As far as eats are concerned... French Fries - ehh. They're average. They don't really season them much. Brisket - it's got good flavor, but sometimes it is hit or miss in terms of tenderness/dryness. Pulled Pork - there are a lot of different options here, but in my humble opinion, the best option is the Carolina style pulled pork. It's really bright and acidic, but you still get that great porky flavor. Arkansas style burnt ends - really flavorful and has a nice subtle spicy kick to it. I'm a huge fan of this dish. Mac-N-Cheese - solid, nothing spectacular. Greens - I think this is their best side. I'm a sucker for braised collard's though...so...try it for yourself. Ribs - This is normally my go-to at Black Hog. I love the dry rub they use. It's salty and sweet, which is what I really want in a rib. I also like that their ribs have some chew to them, but you dont feel like you're gnawing on the bone to get the meat off. Their wet sauce is also good, but I recommend getting the dry ribs and then getting some side sauces and do your own dippin'. ;-) Burgers - They're average. Corn Bread - It's solid corn bread, nothing spectacular, but it's tasty. Baked Beans - I'm not a huge fan of their baked beans. I think they're too sweet. Rice-&-Beans - They're average. They're pretty bland. I wouldn't recommend this side. read more

I've been to some of the more well known BBQ places in the country, and this place does a great job of the different styles. The Memphis style ribs are delicious, the pulled pork is delicious, and they have representations of all the different sauces, east Carolina vinegar, South Carolina mustard, KC style, etc. This was the first place I ate visiting Frederick for the first time, still a favorite in a town full of great restaurants! read more
