Black Bear is one of my go to restaurants for Breakfast and Diner. The food is usually very good and portions are filling. I have learned to order extra bacon with my BLT as it is one of the exceptions to the "ample portion" rule. I generally give this place a 4 or 5 stars, but as I am rating this particular experience, it only warrants a 3, due to the lack of attention from our server. We were seated promptly, as always, and our server greated us in a timely fashion. I ordered eggs over easy with biscuits and gravy. I usually have bacon, because theirs is so good, but opted for sausage as our server said the gravy had little sausage, when I asked. Now here's where it gets disappointing. My biscuits, which were huge, had very little gravy, but I didn't get a chance to find out just how little until I moved the tops over to the side, by which time our server had already left. I had finished my eggs, which were perfect, hoping she would return and I could ask for more gravy, but she never made eye contact the two times she passed our table. When she did stop by to ask if we wanted more coffee, she walked away as soon as my wife said no thank you. I started to ask for the gravy, but as soon as she heard the word "no", she was off without a backward glance. When she passed back by, I tried to make eye contact, but she kept her gaze foward and wouldn't look my way. As this is one of my favorite places, I will definitely return, but ask for a different server if seated at this ones table. read more

I eat here often. Usually I eat the breakfast options but today, after a 5k, I chose a burger. Made to temp, I like med-rare. Had fries as my side. Burger was pretty tasty and cooked perfectly. We showed up for a late breakfast a little before noon on a Sunday and had about a ten minute wait for a table. While waiting we observed the rotund nature of the other patrons and decided the portions must be fairly large. We weren't wrong. Prices are reasonable, the food is very good and yes, the servings are big. The service wasn't great on our visit--our server was a bit surly and we had to flag her down for a refill on coffee--hence the three stars. Was quick to be seated even during breakfast rush this place is large enough that there plenty of tables. I got the breakfast sandwich which as you can see in my picture it is rather large portion and had plenty of breakfast potatoes. It was so tasty that I wanted to eat it all but ended up calling it quits halfway through. EDIT: I reached out to the restaurant three days ago so they could help make it right (per their request below). They have ignored my email - no response. My assumption is that they request we email them to make it seem like they want to do better, with zero accountability. Will update again, if they do reach out. I will be sharing this now on social media, though. Well, if the heat had worked in the restaurant, it still would have been the worse breakfast place we've tried. It was roughly 50 degrees inside, while being 3 degrees outside. The eggs weren't seasoned at all. The hashbrowns (or should I say hashwhites) were oily and not at all cooked. The butter couldn't melt on the French toast, seeing as the restaurant was basically a giant refrigerator. The lettuce to "decorate" the plate was old and wilted. The fruit was not ripe and had a chemical taste. Plus, no hot water in the bathroom...so you may end up with frostbite after washing your hands. Suggestion: close the restaurant, fix the heat, fix the pipes, and get a chef who knows how to cook food properly. read more

My family loves the Black Bear Diner. We're breakfast lovers & this restaurant does it all day long. I've aways used Door Dash and it works great. The last 3 times at least one of us have ordered the Grizz. It comes with 3 eggs of your choice, 2 huge thick sweet cream pancakes with real maple syrup, 2 bacon, 2 saugage, ham steak and your choice of potatoes. This meal is delicious & a lot of food - I've always had enough for 2 meals. Based on their breakfasts, their other meals are probably quite good. Anytime I walk into a restaurant and there is pie on display, I usually have a feeling that I am going to have a good meal. We were greeted with arms wide open and Matt brought out our beverages immediately and while we were marveling at the menu and reading the special edition newspaper we zoned in on a stack of pancakes and country fried stake which were delicious and large enough for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our waiter asked my sister to repeat her order two times, so I pointed to mine on the menu and ordered the two egg ham and cheese omelette with hash browns and a biscuit. it's $10 and something. The omelette looked big when it arrived but no hash browns. I told him and finally received a huge amount of hash browns that were very brown. I ate three spoonfuls and most of my omelette. My bill came to more than $20! my omelette was $13 something and I was charged $4.99 for hash browns! I left without speaking to a manager, but I should have. Ordered some brunch to go after a busy morning of running around doing errands. I was STARVING and black bear diner was close. Wanting and waited 10 minutes past the pickup time for my food. Nobody stopped to say hi or ask if they could help me or anything. Got home a few minutes later and opened my bag to find the eggs, bacon, pancakes, syrup, and butter all just crammed into a single container. The eggs were so overcooked I couldn't eat them. The bacon was the worse quality bacon I've ever seen & I ended up only taking one bite. The pancakes were edible but nothing beyond that. I only had a couple bites of them before I threw them out. I'm a little biased toward diners. Although, I do prefer a hole in the wall, local diner which Black Bear is not. It's definitely more of a corporate feel. I'd compare it to IHOP but I personally think it's much better based on this visit. I'd never been to one until we stopped in here. It was a Friday night and I have to say, I'm still surprised at how many restaurants in JoCo close at 8 or 9pm even on the weekend! Yes, Friday night is a weekend night for me. I really don't understand this. I've lived in some small towns where restaurants had early hours but even they were open later on the weekends. Back to Black Bear Diner. Maybe I didn't have high expectations because it's a chain but I liked it. I had fun picking out several options on my tri-tip steak and chicken tender dinner. I had a nice salad and some good onion rings. My partner got the prime rib which he enjoyed. Is it steakhouse quality, no, but it's also not the price and it's pretty good. We had tons of food with our 2 meals. We had 2 to-go boxes and around $50 with a tip. I also really enjoyed the casual environment and our service was great. Patient as we picked out food, the menu is huge! I was surprised by how quickly the food came out. I liked paying at the register on the way out because it was quick and easy too. I'll also admit I enjoyed perusing the small Black Bear Diner gift shop up front. They have Black Bear Lazy Ones PJs and sleep shirts with the Black Bear on them. I love Lazy Ones PJs and lounge wear! Went in Friday evening and noticed the all you can eat fish for 14.99. So that was the choice. When the fish came to the table it was fried crispy. With it you received fries, coleslaw and what were supposed to be hushpuppies. They were undercooked dough balls, they brought replacement order but it was the same. Someone needs to take a Long Jihn Silvers hushpuppy to show them how they should be made with cornmeal. It was very cold in the restaurant and we were told that it had been adjusted but remained really cold. Maybe their way so you don't stay very long. When you asked for the "all you can eat" fish it took forever to get more and the pieces steadily got smaller and smaller. Tartar sauce was ok, they had malt vinegar but when my friend asked for cocktail sauce they looked at her like she was crazy and said they don't have that. Guess they must not serve any shrimp meals. Waitress was ok, she said she was newer and she tried well to complete our requests timely. Poor girls hands were shaking but no complaints about her. Just know that they didnt seem to really like the idea when people actually asked for more fish so they need to take it off the menu. Been to Black Bear several times but mainly for breakfast. I have driven past this restaurant while heading to the movie theater multiple times and have said we need to check this cute place out. I finally had the opportunity last night and was blown away! This restaurant offers a ton of comfort foods such as meatloaf, pot roast and chicken pot pie, as well as tri tips, burgers and sandwiches. But they are known for their large breakfast menu that is served all day. There are HUGE portions of food for LOW prices as well as over the top friendly service was what we received at our visit. I saw many food items on their vast menu and could not believe my eyes on the size of the portions. The plates are 16-18" wide and better named "platters" than dinnerware they are so large. Each menu item is so large they can definitely be shared. (Don't even get me started on how gigantic the Taco Salad is!) We have tried the following: Lemon pancakes AMAZING chocolate pie WONDERFUL AND HUGE chicken fried steak HUGE and seasoned well. Fish and chips. REALLY GOOD Friendly service also included a visit by Biscuit the Bear who is the restaurant mascot. The kids loved every moment of that! They have a bakery area where you can take home pies and desserts and a cute gift shop as well. Had the light portion biscuit and gravy and two bacon strips along with coffee my bill was 13$ pretty good deal. The bacon was really good and crispy had great flavor. The coffee was ok and hot nothing really special. The biscuits are soft and I like my biscuits a little more crunchy, but the portions was good for a "lite" portion. The gravy was a little bland but I added additional pepper and salt and it was ok. The staff was nice and helpful. Decent place to grab breakfast wasn't busy at all on a Thursday. read more

When we sat down they took our drink order right away and they were ready for our order when they came back. I love businesses that are that quick, especially when both of us were so hungry. Our food came out in good timing. I came here last year and I have to say the food has gotten better. For biscuits and gravy on those biscuits, the gravy was barely enough to use for one biscuit. Eggs were ok but little dry and bacon is super thick so burnt on edges where inner part is fatty. We went in with no expectations since we had never been to a black bear diner before. We weren't really sure what type of food they served, but thought we would give them a try. When we went in it seemed like maybe there was a shortage of employees or it was just an off day. The decor goes along with their marketing. You feel like you've walked into a cabin with a woods theme. It is a little strange however that it is one large open room. I didn't really get a restaurant live but more of a cold and sterile Woods vibe. The menu had a variety of options available from breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
