My sister took me here because she said they had the best Chicken fried steak so that's what I ordered gross! it was cold and the gravy was cold I'm pretty sure it was a frozen steak it tasted like a TV dinner it was terrible and then I ordered pie for some reason and it was just pudding with whip cream! The best thing I can say about my California Burger and Fries was that there was plenty of it. The burger and fries were tepid and mushy, as if it had sat for 10 minutes before being served, and the burger was over cooked. I had been to the Black Bear Diner once in the past, and this meal will not inspire me to return again. read more

so we got off the frewway and wanting to eat something, but, not fast food. so we noticed black bear and halway packed with people inside. we walked in and was seated fast. we ordered and the service was good. the food is great too.......anyways i would recommend this place read more

Had a French dip for lunch with a side of soup. Smallest French dip I've ever had, the meat was so tough I couldn't eat it! My side of soup? Well let's just say I will never do that again. My bill was over 15.00 with tip. Service was good, food bad! read more

What an AWFUL experience!! We live here on Bend and have our favorite places to eat. We decided to give this place a try this morning. It was Monday morning around 10am. Parking lot was not full and no one was waiting. In Bend this is a good thing. We walked inside and waited near a sign that said "please wait to be seated" with no one waiting or in front of us. The restaurant was about 40% full and seemed well staffed. We were spotted after about 5 minutes and the hostess told us twice that she would be with is soon. Time passed and our two year old was growing impatient. We were finally seated after a 10 minute wait. We sat down. Patiently waited an additional 5 minutes before the waitress came over and took our drink menu. She brought our drinks relatively quick and she told us she would be with us soon. 10 minutes passed with no one coming back to take our order. We walked out and no one even asked is to come back. This was the worst dining experience we have had in Bend hands down!! Please do not waste your time or money eating at a restaurant that is not happy to have you as a customer. read more

American food. But what is American food? It is one of those things that is hard to describe, but you "knows it is when you sees it". Pleasant environment, service decent and prices were reasonable - mostly within a couple dollars of $10. What about the food? Our two friends both ordered burgers, one with french fries and the other with fresh fruit. They both rated the burgers as okay. They agreed with a pet peeve of mine, which is that burgers in restaurants are too big - can't take a bite because they are too thick, and then they fall apart and make a mess. Wife's omlet - yes, breakfast at dinner - was also good as per her assessment. I was surprised, but the tuna in my tuna chef salad was really good. Overall, good, as in decent but not outstanding, in all respects, and you won't go away hungry. read more

DO Not Patronize this place. From Olympia Washington with our baseball team and they wouldn't seat us. Only if we ordered hamburgers and kept it on one check with 18% gratuity! I almost didn't come here after reading reviews about the terrible service, but I'm so glad I ignored the reviews and went anyway! I went on a Saturday morning, around 8am, and the service was wonderful. Very speedy, and they checked on me multiple times throughout my meal, refilling coffee or asking how it was. The service here is by far the worst I have ever experienced at any restaraunt! Our waitress Edie was extremely rude as we walked in barely giving us a hello and acting so annoyed that we had even come into the restaraunt. As my husband and I sat there with our menus closed waiting for the waitress we observed her flirting with the cooks and any other male that worked or walked into the restaraunt. Finally she slowly dragged over to us with a smurk look on her face asking what we wanted. She was unaware of any specials and didn't seem to know the menu to well when asked about a few simple things. Our food finally arrived.. cold.. after 25 minutes in a place that was basically empty for cold food?? overall the experience was awful.. I would say we would come back as we have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere, but this service was just terrible! In fact, we have several other friends who were very loyal to this particular black bear in bend, or until the service just went downhill. Our friends actually remember this particular waitress (edie) who they say have seen do exactly the same things each time they go in to which they have started to request any other server but her. Came here with my husband and 3 kids. I got the little plater and it still had more than enough food. Homemade biscuits were delicious and the bacon was the perfect thickness. The fresh squeezed orange juice tasted so good even though I don't care for pulp. The waitress was friendly and helpful in telling us local things to go to. the kids are already asking to come back tomorrow. read more

Love that you can get "small size" entrees. The steak and baked potato were perfect, the green beans exceptional, and salad dressing house-made. Husband enjoyed the pork BBQ ribs alot. Service was great. And I love the carved wood bears all around the place-very different and added to the atmosphere which brings a smile to your face. Skip the bread pudding though. read more

If I could give this Black Bear a 0 star I would. I've been to many locations in Idaho, California and Oregon and had great experiences. This Black Bear Diner has to be the worst location. My family and I have been to this Black Bear location probably a total of 10 times because we stay at the Red Lion hotel right next door when we travel. The service is always ridiculously slow. Today when we arrived, the diner was mostly empty. There was maybe 5 other tables full and the rest empty. From the time we got seated and ordered we didn't receive our food until 50 minutes later (3 people ordered 3 regular breakfasts). When we mentioned it to our waitress she said they had a big party in the back and it threw everyone off. When you walk in the door you can see the big area where the party would have been and when we arrived there were 3 guys sitting there so the big party arrived after us. When we did get our food 50 minutes later the eggs were cold, cheese not melted in the omelette,hash browns piping hot, sausage was burnt and over cooked, we were given biscuits instead of the toast we ordered. When this was brought to the attention of the manager and asked for it to be taken off the bill (1 breakfast that wasn't even eaten and still sitting on the table) she said no and that we were rude and she literally told us she would prefer if we didn't come back. No worry there because this is ridiculous. We were not looking for a free meal. We would gladly pay for what we expect to receive which is a hot meal in a timely manor. I have been to most of the Black Bear establishments and I and I have always been impressed with their service; however, this time we had to leave due to the lack of any customer service :( we were seated and our two daughters never got their kid menus (ages 7 & 9) I told my girls it's ok, I would ask when our waitress came to our table. The people who were seated after us were tended to first. The next couple that came in after them also received first service, they got their water. My husband finally asked one of the waitresses walking by if we could order, and she said "we will be with you in a minute!" She snapped her eyes and walked by us. I was appalled at her behavior, even the table next to us raised their eye brows at her. My husband told us to leave the table and we left. He did stop by to let the senior waitress know about the other waitresses rude attitude, but apparently it was not her fault (!). This will probably be the last time we visit the Bend Black bear restaurant. I'll keep to the other establishments who treat their customers better. read more
