Service was great! And it was lovely that the place was empty on a Saturday morning. Maybe because these chain breakfast joints just aren't as popular anymore. Sadly the food is just alright. The portions are huge which is probably its main selling point still. Especially when you have a hangover. I was so excited about the biscuits but mine was cold and it's really just too big. No flavor. Not tasty at all. My omelette was also cold, in fact the finely shredded cheese inside it wasn't even melted a little bit. It was still pretty good though. It tasted way better with the signature hot sauce. I'd rate the basic hashbrowns a 5/10 and maybe I'll get the OBrien potatoes instead next time. They looked a bit more flavor town. Overall I'd return if I could be promised a hotter meal. It's needs to bring back the l mom n pop feel. And start making the food with a little more care (freshness and seasoning) and dare I say with a reduced portion size. No one needs to eat a full entree here for a balanced healthy breakfast. Great team. Friendly. Coffee never got cold. Waffles and pancakes take me back to better times. Not going to sugar coat it, it a highway Diner. Food will never be 5 star but is it supposed to be? That said I've never made a reasonable request that wasn't taken care of. Wife and I have feelings over how bacon should be cooked, for Black Bear, not an issue. I got mine that wouldn't chip a tooth and she got hers hard as tank armor (errrr.....crispy). Cook made sure everyone one was happy. No counseling needed. One of my favorites. Taylor and Gretchen are the Real Deal! Our crew rolled in after a long ride from Crescent City CA, tired and hungry, and Taylor absolutely crushed it for dinner and Gretchen met us the next morning for breakfast. They didn't just take care of us, they TOOK CARE OF US! Drinks never empty, food came out just right! Big groups can be a handful, but she handled us like a pro--laughing along, keeping the vibe fun, and somehow staying on top of everything at the same time. By the end, we were all saying the same thing: "Taylor and Gretchen ARE the Black Bear Diner MVPs." If you're stopping in, hope you land at one of their tables. We went late in the morning this past Saturday. We had called ahead to see what the wait was because we had stopped at Elmers and their wait was for 30 mins (although there were only 2 parties waiting). The gentleman who answered the phone said "sure, come on by". We were seated with no delay and I would say with it being extremely busy we were served and out of there within 45 minutes. I ordered the Denver Omelette and DH the sausage and biscuit side with bacon. I always get omelettes and then I regret it. This one was light and lots of veggies not too much cheese. The hash browns (which I wouldn't normally order) were unique. Thinking back to the meal, I think they forgot to give me my english muffin (no biggie). Cutest diner. Working in the Bend area and someone suggested the Black bear diner as I work until 9pm. Went by the first night, really has a cute diner feel. I was late getting there about 930. I felt bad as they seem to be kind of closing down, but Taylor the server was absolutely so nice. Gave me a menu and sat me and let me know it was fine and I didn't have to rush. I hate coming into a place so close to closing, but she really made me feel welcome. She even recommended a meal. I have to say it was absolutely fabulous and the price was incredible. I had a burger, fries, and a side salad, all the portions were very large and it was just over $20. Very friendly staff, accommodating and great food. We had Taylor last night for dinner after a long day of travel and she welcomed us with a warm smile and was attentive to our table. My wife and I decided to have dinner here tonight. I ordered chicken fried steak and my wife ordered the roast beef. My first realization of what was to come was both the baked potato and macaroni and cheese were cold! Not just a little cold but the macaroni cheese had a crust on it. The baked potato couldn't even melt the butter. As for my wife's meal. Cold cold. The gravy on the roast beef had already congealed. The meat was so cold it tasted like rubber. The rolls were average at best. The 1 positive was the waitress. She would receive a 3 star review. Not her fault the food was cold but I am sure she knew our meals were cold by the ice cold plates! We obviously did not leave a tip! Our normal tip is 20%. read more

WORST Black Bear EXPERIENCE! We had a party of 8 so of course we understood that it would take a little longer to accommodate us. First red flag was that the waitlist got "lost" between the servers. Didn't seem like there was a designated person for the front to check people in and cash people out. We we're finally seated and all seemed well when our server took our order. However they ran out of clean mugs so we got paper cups. Then our food took an hour plus to arrive. All the other tables around us got their food well before us. An 8 top is really 2 tables of 4 or 4 tables of 2... I don't understand why it took so long for our table! Then when our food came out only 2 meals (pancakes and a burrito) were correct. 5 meals came out but were wrong, missing their bread and biscuits, hash browns not crispy! Kicker was one meal was entirely wrong! Instead of rushing the incorrect order it took another 15minutes to come out and by this time everyone else had already finished their meal. When the correct omelette did come out it wasn't correct, it was supposed to have red potatoes but instead got hash browns. The missing bread and biscuits only came out after 15minutes ... first ask the server said they're on their way, nope! I think they forgot them altogether. Our server didn't check up on us or offer us water until our meals were already done. If you make a mistake don't avoid the table, make it up to the table!!! I'd give this experience a -5 stars if I could just for the lack of sincerity our server had for our long wait and messed up food. All they said is "it happens!" And shoved aka literally threw discount coupons at us , they fell in the floor in her haste. I chose this place because the other place we were looking at had a 40 minute wait. If I were you I'd wait the extra time upfront and avoid this place . They seem severely understaffed and the staffing they have need improvement. Our entire meal and wait time took 2.5 hours! While visiting Oregon for the Fairwell Festival, we happen to stumble upon this gem of a restaurant! The first morning we went we weren't quite sure what to make of it as we waited a little bit before getting seated. However, once we were seated, things went so smoothly and quickly. This is a solid location though staffing levels and time of year will vary - folks, this is a seasonally based location meaning that summer time just basically expect the establishment to have some issues as mostly likely they've just trained up a third of their staff in just the last week. Their food is acceptable standards for a chain - they use United Salad as their food service provider which is a family owned oregon company - their produce is mid level grade and meats are SP provisions - for the price point you're getting the convenience of large tables, close to hotels and the freeway, online ordering etc - it's a dennys style chain - take it at face value and you won't be too terrible disappointed read more

This was the perfect brunch stop for our family of 4. They have a little bit of everything so everyone can get what they like. I had the pot roast with mashed potatoes which was delicious! Service was fabulous and our server hooked me up with trading one of my sides for a side salad (for that particular dish they normally don't do that). They were short staffed but we got there just in time and didn't have to wait for a table. The bear decor here is my favorite. The black bears are so cute. The menus are like newspapers. Went twice for breakfast which was great with excellent service. We decided to try dinner. My wife had Chicken Caesar Melt. It had a strange taste and not good. I had the Homemade Crispy Onion Topped Meatloaf. I did not get a cornbread muffin. The meatloaf was 1 1/2 slices of less than 1/4 " thick salty gravy overpowering the meatloaf. I was shocked at such a thin small portion. The onion rings were the only good thing between the two meals. I took the option of adding carmelized onions, peppers and cheese. It was more than I could eat. I ended up taking half of it with me when we left. A day later we warmed it in the microwave. It was still very good. The 2nd time we both had the special. It wasn't on the menu. We found it on a card near the salt and pepper shakers. There were several options. We chose the stroganoff. It was made with hamburger but was very good. Neither of us could eat all of our meal. Our waitress was having to deal with an obnoxious customer at the next table.
