Walked in without a reservation on a cold winter night because the boy wanted some pizza. While we have many pizza places in the area (Two Boots, Iggies, Joe2) we've not been to Birroteca in the city yet. Birroteca in Bel Air? Yep, once last year. Birroteca is a bar with upscale pasta & pizzas, so it was not that suprising that it was darker than if it were a restaurant that had a bar. This one felt more cramped but just as dark as the Bel Air one. A lot more people in smaller space = much more noisy. The boy asked the size of the pie and if we could get 2 different styles of toppings since he was vacillating on toppings. We were told that the pizzas were approximately 12" and if the sauces were the same then it would be ok, but otherwise we wouldnt be able to get such, the boy happily ordered 2 of the topped pizzas then. I forget which ones we got but one had spicy sausage and i forget what we ordered for the other half but not memorable apparently since all I remember is the spicy sausage. I was happy with the thin crust as we wanted a thin crusted pizza that night, but what I didnt quite love was that on one of my slices of pizza the bottom was burnt and all I could taste on that one slice was just the burnt taste. I'm a fan of wood fire pizza so I expect charred and crisp crust but not quite this charred. The rest of the pizza was just fine -- crisp exterior, chewier interior, thin -- just enough sauce.. yum! I needed some green so we ordered the Kale salad with dressing on the side since the boy does not like dressed salads since so many places over dress it. The salad came already dressed, but I'm happy to say that there was just enough dressing on the salad and we happily dug into the salad. The salad hit on so many levels -- sweet, sour, and crunchy, I think i may love it more than the actual pizza. read more

I took my son and boyfriend to Birroteca on Friday night... I wanted to sit outside on a warm, sunny April evening... and I wanted to try something new. I'll start by saying, the service was great... pizzas and food were good. The atmosphere was bad. Their version of "outdoor seating" was under a covered patio. It was dark and cold... I didn't care for it at all. My other negative was the price. WOW. My son doesn't drink and my boyfriend only had one drink... I had two glasses of wine. Two pizzas, a couple drinks and an appetizer = $120! I couldn't believe it when the check came. My opinion? Save your money and go elsewhere. Not worth the hefty price-tag. read more

Had dinner this past Saturday night outside. Food was amazing. Pork belly appetizer was really good, pork belly could have been a little crispier but everything else was great. The homemade parpadelle pasta with the wild boar was sooooo good. Pasta was cooked to perfection and sauce was so tasty. Would definitely recommend and can't wait to go back! read more

Well we were looking for a place with good food and atmosphere. The previous owner/restaurant (Kolpers) had a bad reputation for poor service and fights and arguments along with a few calls to the police who had to come. We found the new place not much better then the previous one. We were in a group of 12 people. We tried many of the various foods, none were great, some were okay and the rest terrible. If this chef is suppose to be well known and top of the best 10 list..... someone's not telling the truth. Wine list was terrible and over priced. The waiters/bartenders were more interested in talking to their friends and drinking then they were serving their customers. Trust me when I say this..... Avoid at all cost. They are just as bad as the previous owners/restaurant. Also the crowd this place drew was from college rejects to new age wanna be's and fell short of that goal as well. read more

Always packed! And, for a good reason! The food here is spectacular and affordable. Birroteca is basically an Italian style brew pub. The homemade pasta is fantastic, the in-house charcuterie is to die for, the artisinal pizzas are delicious, and the menu is very creative. The beer and wine lists are extensive, and I've had some of the best service in my life here. A bartender named Gary, rocks! My only complaint is that it's always so busy. If I had the chance, I'd go to Birroteca every day.... read more

Parking is absolutely horrendous. Almost embarrassing how 'unfinished' parking situation is considering how long they've been there. It was packed and loud, but a good loud, festive. As far as the pizza, it's a bit overrated as far as I'm concerned, but very appropriately priced. The duck pizza is good. Egg on it was nothing special. Almost tasted as if all our pizzas were sitting in the warm window just waiting for the waiter to snag. Very disappointed on that. Also got my drink wrong, twice, on the same order. That kind of ruined the festive mood a little. Good spot, but not a 'must go' as it's been labeled in these reviews and others. read more

Perfect evening of dining out. Service, drinks, apps, and entrees were to die for as always. Our server Corey was adorable and his recommendations were on point. He convinced us to try the asparagus and beet salad. Wow out of this world, can't wait to come back and try some new menu items!!!!!!!!!!! We were too stuffed to try the new desserts but def. on our agenda next time at the hip, cool, and lovely itailan paradise. read more

If I could give no stars I would! Very bad and we didn't even eat! Just wanted to say that don't be surprised if your reservation is not honored. I had a reservation for two for Valentine's day and was sorely disappointed when we arrived and were ushered to the bar area, past three open tables, to a high top table that seats eight people! Needless to say, I asked that we be seated at one of the empty tables as I had made a reservation. They said they were saving those tables for parties of 4. I commented that the larger parties of 4 could be seated at the table for 8 that they tried to seat us. When they could not accomodate, we left. If their practice is for you to share your meal/experience with strangers, they should advertise or at least warn you when you make the reservation. read more

One of the absolute best meals I have had in years. Celebrating a birthday with a co worker was effortless and tons of fun. As we milled in conversation and enjoyed our bruschetta appetizer, we tested our artistic abilities on the paper placed atop our white tablecloth. On our way out we realized they frame many of the customer table drawings on the walls. How clever! I had goat cheese stuffed pasta in a marvelous onion based sauce, while my friend enjoyed her duck confit. The wine selection was more than adequate and there was something for everyone there. We selected to sit upstairs and the ambiance was wonderful. Our desserts were perfect. My lovely ice cream with a peanut butter cookie was locally made and superb. My friends tiramisu was heavenly. We cannot wait to return. What a find! read more

Made a reservation for my birthday dinner and still had to wait 30 minutes for a loud table at the bar. Service was very slow- they gave us complimentary dessert because we waited so long for 2 pizzas which were good but nothing special. The salumi and cheese tray was sad- the cheeses, which the server could not name, were in two small piles of bits that were impossible to taste because there was so little of it. The arugula salad was good but the kale salad was way overdressed with raisin vinaigrette which made it cloyingly sweet and no pumpkin seeds as advertised to give it some salt and crunch. It was a very long night for average food although my husband did enjoy the large beer selection and the Bootsy Collins was delicious. read more

This is in my neighborhood and I have been about a dozen times. Often in a party of 4, and the last couple of times with my partner. Birroteca has AMAZING cocktails and a great wine list, good choices if you just want one glass of wine. The atmosphere is really good, stone walls, different mix of spaces, and a glass of pencils to go with the paper topped white tablecloths. It's quite easy to park in the large lot. It had been a couple months since we had walked down for dinner, as the last time I was there my kale salad was filled with sand. It happens sometimes, the server was great, she brought a different salad to replace it. Last night we had a table at 6:30, I had a Jack Rose and my date a fancy Sidecar. We went off the rails a bit when the waiter made a rude comment about how closely I held my menu. He apologized immediately, gave me a minute, came back with another authentic apologie, recused himself and replaced with a new server. Unfortunate accident, but a professional recovery. We stayed for an excellent Puttanesca pizza, with a GF crust ($3.00 upcharge). The very outside of the crust often comes nearly black. We also enjoyed the fennel scented salmon family plate. Cooked perfectly, also quite an amount of black char on the crispy skin. read more

I have lived in Baltimore my whole life and I have become rather picky about going to city restaurants. Now it seems, most are just junk or are just over priced, especially the newer ones in Hamden. So, when my wife informed me we are going to Birroteca I did not expect much. I could not have been more wrong. Positives: The pizza was fresh and fast. We got a white pizza and a margarita but they have a great selection. The crust was thin and crispy. The cheese was quality, not like that oily stuff you get from those generic pizza joints. The fish (salmon) was very fresh and cooked perfect. The workers were kind and the place was clean. We got seated fast as we had made reservations 2 day earlier. Negative: The place is loud and very busy so you should most def make reservations or it seems you will have to a few to get seated. Parking lot is sorta a nightmare, you will see when you go there (if they are busy). All in all, great meal and great place. I look forward to going back. read more

- food was decent but overpriced ($110 total for 2 apps, 2 entrees, 1 ice cream, and 4 beers) :( - Pizza similar to Verde in Canton :-/ - Beer/Wine split on the menu is 50/50 :( - majority local breweries (Union, Brewer's Art, Flydog, DFH) :) - Sea Salt and Olive Oil ice cream was amazing :D - only 3 dark beers :( - new server didn't know the beer selection but very friendly :-/ I really want a business style like this to succeed. It's awesome to go to a place with a good micro-brew selection, and food to compliment it. Makes you feel the micro-brew renaissance is alive in Baltimore, similar to that of what you experience in Portland or Boulder. I would go back for a Happy Hour, but not table service. read more

Definitely off the beaten path in Hampden if you want to escape the Avenue (and they have a parking lot!). Plenty of room and I was with a group (8 people) and we sat at a large table in bar for happy hour. Decent happy hour and the pizzas are great for sharing! read more

Great. Fabulous. Sat at the bar, bartenders were friendly, helpful and good at what they did. Had some small plates, brussels sprouts, pizza-nini, meatballs; all were tasty. The happy hour beer flight was great, as was the house red (malbec) and the weekly cocktail. Will be back. read more

This was the first well seasoned salad I have had since I moved to Baltimore 2 years ago. Great service and even better food. Fundamentally perfect. read more

I have been to Birroteca more than 10 times now. It has been mostly good, except for one time when we got a server who was very condescending and annoying (but never before or after). The food is very good, some of my favorites are definitely Homemade Papardele with wild boar (I crave it so much sometimes it hurts lol). Their eggplant pizza and Duck Duck Goose pizza are fantastic. Also, recently I have discovered their desserts! They use Taharka brothers ice cream which is my absolute favorite local, and their desserts are delicious. I'd recommend the apple thing (forgot the name) and the hazelnut cheesecake (yummy). They have a very decent beer list, and some good cocktails (if you like old fashioned, grub yourself a monolord). All the waiters and the bartenders we have met have been very courteous. Sometime you have to wait for a hostess, but it's okay. The ambience is very intimate in the dining area, bar can get noisy on certain days. They have outside sitting when it's warm, which is just lovely. When I feel like I just want to have good food and a good drink, I head there and it's never a miss. Thank you Birroteca, love you guys! read more

Ok, it's loud. But I LOVE the architecture and the energy in the place is amazing. I also love all of their food! I haven't had anything I didn't enjoy! The pizza is great, the steak tartare is great, the pasta's are great! YUM.. I've been here about 4 times and I've enjoyed them all! can't wait to go back! read more

Very accommodating after a hiccup in reservations -- thanks for being proactive!

First off, let me start by saying that the food at Birrotecca is tremendous. Everything was delicious, however there were quite a few other problems. I made a reservation 3 weeks ago for a birthday party. 20 people. When we arrived 10 mins before the reservation, the hostess informed us that the tables were not ready yet. Ok I thought, we will go to the bar and wait. After 40 mins longer, I asked the hostess exactly when our reservation would be available, ( the previous party was still seated, and had not yet ordered desert!) as we now have 20 people sitting at the bar and we are 30 mins past. They explained that the tables were still not ready. Long story short, we were seated over an HOUR past of reservation time. Doesn't the act of RESERVING a table at a certain time mean that you can actually sit at that table in a reasonable amount of time? What's the purpose of the reservation otherwise? I don't blame the party seated before us, but the servers or mgmt needs to let them know when they are being seated that a large reservation is coming in behind the or just seat them elsewhere. Once we were finally seated, the service was mediocre at best. Since we had a large party, we had two tables side by side. One table had literally been served and eaten their meal before the other table had their order taken. It was frustrating night which was meant to be a celebration. And a few free appetizers (burnt brussel sprouts and a cauliflower plate) really doesn't make up for the supreme inconvenience of choosing your restaurant. Suffice to say, I would never recommend this place for a party or a group. Its a shame because the pizza was really good by the time it finally got to the table. And, Josh, a Reservation is a Promise to your Patrons. If you offer Reservations but are knowingly unable to keep your promise, than you are either misleading potential patrons or are dishonest. Since you know that Friday's and Saturday's you cannot honor reservations, then don't accept them on those days. That would be the most appropriate thing to do. Had I known in advance that your restaurant is unable to provide a reserved table within 30 mins and are incapable of doing this on a routine basis on Fridays and Saturdays, I would have chosen somewhere else. And I'm sure many other patrons in the same circumstances would agree. read more

oh god this place was so good. SO GOOD. We ate enough at our table of three for at least a group of 7. It was too good to stop ordering things we just couldnt decide. Just a look at the menu will tell you how delicious this place is. Just read the menu. ALSO ask about the daily specials or what they are recommending the night you go. We did and got this family sized dish of seafood and polenta and delicious pesto sauce and tomatoes and vegetables and more seafood. Then we also ordered two pizzas, I cant even remember what they were because they were so good I fell into a pizza heaven where I was just swimming around in waves of deliciousness. I actually just don't want to mention any in particular because I urge you to go for what sounds good to you, and something WILL SOUND GOOD believe me, and when it does, it will be delicious, I promise. We also got a whole range of appetizers. Yeah, me my dad and my friend were huge pigs that night. Octopus. and omg the brussel sprouts. dying. delicious. and then damn all the icecream at the end was just on point. Yes, I had a lot to say about how good the food is. Its just delicious please try it. Also GREAT drinks!! Tried a couple, including some shandys and some cocktails. All were well received, but really, they were just getting in the way of the eating. The decor was gorgeous as well we were seated outside and it was perfect. All I have to say is: anyone want to go with me? Please? Pretty please? read more

This place is awesome. The pizza and calamari are so fresh. The only con is that this is not located in the city, so the access to it is hard. Also, parking is a major con. You would think that because it's located on the out skirts of the city, the parking situation would be good, but during dinner time the lot gets full very fast. read more

Was here on Friday. I must say that I STILL feel like the staff are so quick to clear plates (some still with food on them) but the food was much better than the last time I was here (A few months ago). The caprese salad was excellent, and the pesto on it was a nice surprise. Additionally the pizza was not greasy this time which was better than last time. Again though, we were in and out of there in 1 hour. I feel like the staff is pressured to turn tables over. I like to relax and enjoy and dine, not feel rushed. read more

I want to give this place a 4.5 because it's not quite a 5 but as close as it gets. We made a visit to Birroteca when it first opened to see what the hype was about. Our first experience was unpleasant and here is why. I recall waiting a long time to get service while sitting at the bar. I also saw a waiter touch the charcuterie meat without gloves. We ordered a salad which took forever and a pizza that came out cold. We hadn't been back since. Last night we went to Birroteca and had a much better experience. We sat down and still waited a while to be acknowledged at the bar. We didn't fault the bartenders though because they seemed overwhelmed (this also seemed to be the case last time we were here) although the bar wasn't particularly full. The bartenders were very helpful especially Molly. She made excellent recommendations with food and drinks and we had a great experience because of her. Based on her recommendations we had the meatballs, the calamari and the kale, fig and goat cheese bruschetta. The portions of these appetizers were big so we couldn't eat more than this but we really, really wanted to. The meatballs were cold but still had excellent flavor. They come with buratta cheese and tomato sauce which is slightly sweet. They were amazing. I also loved the calamari. It was grilled and slightly crispy as well as very fresh tasting. The combination of lemon, olive oil, herbs and capers were perfectly balanced. Then we had the bruschetta and it was like dessert. We compared it to sweet texas toast. The bread was thick and soft on the inside with a crunchy outside. The combination of honey, kale, goat cheese and figs created the perfect sweetness. Like I said, the portions were big for 2 people and we were stuffed. My husband was also very pleased and we were still talking about how good the food was this morning! I recommend skipping the pizza and trying their other dishes. The selection is pretty big! The scene here is great and the atmosphere is fun. We will definitely be back and can safely say this is now finally one of our favorite restaurants in Baltimore. read more

This is hands down the best pizza I've had in Baltimore! The Margherita pizza was perfect and the gluten free pizza crust tasted just as flavorful as regular crust. Great atmosphere and welcoming staff. Overall an amazing experience! Will definitely come back. read more

We went back to Birroteca a second time and tried more amazing items from the menu. This time, we tried the pesto pizza, the mushroom/apple bruschetta, the arugula salad with shaved fennel, the brussel sprouts, and the mussels. The mussels were so delicious, we asked for bread to soak up the sauce. They charged us $2.00 for the bread -- three pieces. I hope this was a mistake. I know they charge for bread service, but I hope the three pieces of bread did not constitute bread service. We had terrific, affable service. And we made our next two dinner reservations. The cost for 4 people, including 6 drinks (!?!) was about $135.00. Birroteca is a reasonably-priced place with excellent food. The coffee and decaf are really bad, though. They should work on that. But, I can live with bad coffee after such delicious food. read more

Great food and atmosphere with a big selection of craft beer to go with the brick-oven style pizza. Will definitely go back.

This place is super cozy. The staff is very friendly and inviting. My favorite is to go sit at the bar and grab a drink from my favorite bartender. His name is Tom and knows a lot about spirits and cocktails! I love their calamari too! I usually eat it fried but they are slow cooked and oh so tender! Great spot to dine with anyone!! read more

Great place ...... food beverage and service done right!!!!!! Get the sprouts and sit in bar area...... this place is CHARM CITY!!!!!

So my hubby and I love it here. Whoever was behind the bar tonight, you're awesome, all of you! They were working and having fun and being so attentive and amazing. Of course our food was good: steak tartare and mushroom pizza. It was the end of the night and the vibe was really good, the staff was having fun and loving their job. Thank you for a great night Birrotecca. read more

This place was awesome. Went here with the Mrs. Last saturday night. Great place for a date....dim lighting, cool atmosphere. Calamari was amazing, as well as the cheese and salumi platter. Add an egg to any pizza...highly recommended! Cheap corkage at $15 which is perfect if you have a decent bottle to bring. Otherwise the wine list is decent and well priced and beer selection extensive. All in all very well done! read more

I'm just writing an update because I'm aware that Robbin, the owner reads yelp reviews and takes them seriously. So, I ate here tonight again and it was delicious as before. I'm writing this review, however, to say that the manager, Scott, is amazing. The restaurant was busy and he took the time to chat with us, and really gave the impression that he really cared about our experience and would fix anything that wasn't right. I highly recommend this place, just have a reservation, because this place was packed to capacity on a Tuesday night before 6 pm! read more

This place was great! Definitely has a hipster vibe to it, as all the staff are dressed in plaid. I would recommend making a reservation since its usually super crowded. My friends and I received great recommendations for craft beers. We ordered three pizzas (had a lot of leftovers!), and they all were cooked to perfection. Not too little or much crust, crispy, and great ingredients. We hung at the bar after dinner where we tasted tons of beer. If you're a fan of chai tea, ask for the Christmas beer. It was so unique and tasty! Great food, drinks and staff for sure! read more
