I really wanted to like this place. The concept should be a slam dunk-- pizza and beer, duh! Our experience started of fine. The host was quick and friendly. Our server told us about some specials and our drinks came out quickly. The beer list is impressive. The only knock on the service was that we clearly asked for our apps to come out first but everything showed up at the same time. So why two stars? Well because the pizza was just that bad. The crust was terrible, it tasted like a stale generic Boboli crust from Safeway. The rest of the pizza lacked flavor or anything redeeming. Three days later we are still talking about how disappointing it was. I love pizza and pizza places. I will stick with Verde in Canton or 2 Amys in DC. We wont be back. read more

Food is not bad. Friday night is quite crowded. It actually took one hour and forty-five minutes to get an appetizer (!). Overall, the menu seems a bit overpriced. read more

Fantastic beer and pizzas. A little drive from downtown but there is plenty of free parking.

No mater what meal you want you HAVE to get a meat and cheese board. The stuff they have is insane good and Mr. Rob pairs it like a pro. You will leave full and more than satisfied. Mr. Rob hooked me up with a mini cheese board for dessert (I don't have a sweet tooth but #cheeseislife) and it was the perfect ending to my birthday dinner. Make sure you make a reservation!! read more

Birroteca Baltimore - Italian Near Me - Baltimore, Maryland

Another visit and we definitely believe some things have "dropped off". The pasta was not al dente ( could be that it was overcooked or they are serving a different kind). We also believe the pizza is not as flavorful as it was in the beginning. I'm not saying the food was bad, but I am saying that it isn't as good as it once was. We were not disappointed overall, but we were bummed out because this happens to so many places that we discover. read more

The list of ingredients from the menu is like a bad montage with 'Eye of the Tiger" for a song... then the food was so bland and not worth the money. We should have left after a drink and a good laugh at the menu.. read more

Great food, great atmosphere off the beaten path. Bartenders were hilarious. The Nutella dessert was so fucking good.

Four words- get the Brussels Sprouts. And If you love the food as much as we do, be sure to check out their cooking classes. Very reasonably priced for the experience!! read more

Overall this was a good dining experience. I made a reservation the day before for 2 people. We were seated promptly in the bar area. I personally think the next time we go I will request not to be seated in the bar. It seemed as though the tables were a little too jammed into the corner and the patrons from the bar were spilling onto our table. It was a constant bother. Our server was very tentative. We actually had checked out the menu before visiting and were a little disappointed that it had not been updated. They no longer have the escargot pizza which we were looking forward to trying and the daily specials have changed. We decided on the pesto pizza and the duck duck goose. We also ordered the arugula fennel salad. The salad came out quickly and it was good. However the fennel was lacking and it could have been dressed a touch more as it was somewhat dry. But overall it was a decent way to start the meal. The server had told us that their oven only fits 5 pizzas at a time which i found a touch odd considering the restaurant is sizable as well as the bar. She told us this so we would be prepared for a wait if the pizza didn't come out promptly or the meal was staggered. We did wait about 15-20 mins for the pies to come out. A little long, but it was well worth it. The duck duck goose was hands down our favorite! it was sweet yet salty, it seriously hit all right notes. The pesto was good but nothing super special. The pesto came out room temperature which was a little disappointing, but we were hungry and had a been drinking so it wasn't too much of a big deal. It was a solid meal with a good atmosphere. We will definitely go back since we now know what to expect. PROs: Duck duck goose pizza Beer selection Friendly/tentative wait staff Meat slicers at the bar (AWESOME) CONs: Sitting in bar area for dinner service too crowded Room temperature pizza due to the previously mentioned oven issue read more

I personally love everything about this place. I came here on a random Sunday night with some of my girl friends. The interior design is quite impeccable. It was quite cozy and nice inside. The service was excellent and the waitress knew the menu very well. We ordered a couple pizza, drinks and a few appetizers. Like all the rave, the duck duck goose pizza did not disappoint, as well as the brussel sprouts. A great place for a date night or a night out with friends. Would highly recommend it! read more

I moved about 2 blocks away a few months ago, and finally visited for the first time. My partner got 3rd wave Shoreline as his beverage and loved it. The selection of beers here is quite impressive. We did not have a reservation, and they were quite busy, but they were very accommodating. He got the Bianco pizza. We were a little Leary of pizza with honey, but it was amazing! I ordered the bruschetta. I wasn't feeling well, so I wasn't eating, and the staff was very concerned that something was wrong. I explained the situation and they were more than happy to box my meal up for me. The staff was very friendly, the menu impressive, and the food delicious. I can't wait to come back when I'm not sick. read more

Tonight was my third time at Birroteca. If you're looking for a place to take a date, this is it. Meeting up with a friend? Go here. Want to have a night out with the girls? Bring 'em here (and then go to The Charmery on 36th St. for some ice cream). It's usually super busy during the dinner hour (once 7PM hits, the place is packed) - you really need a reservation. Also, when it's packed, it gets loud - but bearable. It's a lot of people in a really small, quaint, charming, beautiful place - tucked away at the end of 36th/Ash St. in Hampden. The food inspires you to try something new, the drink selection is great, the waiters/waitresses KNOW their stuff. It's a refreshing laid-back dining experience. read more

Birroteca I really wanted to like you but came away feeling disappointed after the meal. So what was wrong? The menu is very small and focuses on lots of carbs and some oily foods. We started with a baked toasted bread with nice pieces of smoked salmon on the top and some soft cheese in the middle. After that we had a Caesar salad with fresh greens, some oily crispy croutons and the strangest tangy Caesar dressing I've ever tasted. Someone in the kitchen decided more pepper was better than less. Fortunately I had a bottle of tap water close by and i quickly extinguished the fiery taste in my mouth. Next we had a risotto dish with shrimp and three pieces of tender spinach on top. The risotto was creamy and the shrimp were tender and plentiful. This is where the best part of the meal abruptly ends. We ordered two pizzas, one a vegetarian with a very oily pesto sauce and some arugula that had been tossed in extra virgin olive oil making this the most slippery pizza I've ever eaten. Hold the oil and let the pizza shine through I say. Next was a regular cheese and tomato pie with mushrooms. This was much better that the first but it did not taste like it was worth $16 for the dough, cheese, tomato sauce and the few mushrooms on top. So how do i sum up the meal for the reader who wants a taste of Birroteca. The decor is cool, the location is under the JFX way and not too scenic. It is selling a kind of upscale eating concept to those who think it is cool to pay $90 for the opportunity to eat an uneven meal in this cafe. I say find a place that is not so hip but has good food and taste the difference. I have many places I like that are quite ordinary to look at but give me something to remember long after I've paid the check and walked out the door. So diners be warned - the food is ordinary, the interior is attractive and the prices are too high. Also I made my reservation three weeks ago and was seated at 6pm at an uncomfortable high top in the bar. I just came back from grimy downtown Poughkeepsie and ate at a very hip restaurant with a chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America. What a difference in the quality and preparation of the food. Check it out - the Artist's Palette in Poughkeepsie. I'll be writing a review for that one and it will have 5 stars on the rating chart for its effort. read more

Heard abt this place from a friend's rec and from Bmore's "50 Best Restaurants" March 2014 edition Bronze category. The restaurant's in the middle of nowhere and looks like a barn. Inside though, it's quite spacious with a large bar smack in the middle. It was pretty empty when we went at 5pm so we sidled up to the bar. Got the eggplant fries and spicy fennel/sausage pizza. The eggplant fries were a decent amount and came with this chipotle-tasting mayo. WIthout the dip tho, the fries were under seasoned and it was difficult to tell it was eggplant that we were eating. We got the spicy fennel/sausage pizza despite hearing great things abt the duck duck goose pizza cause we weren't too keen on duck. The pizza was perfectly cooked. There was a fair amount of crust. Definitely some kick to it. Could have used more fennel. Overall, an okay, unremarkable place. read more

I recently saw on Instagram that Birroteca was going to have more vegan selections. As a vegan connected to a community looking for plant based friendly food - I was so excited to hear this. I also live in Baltimore and want to support and spread the word about local businesses. I came in with two friends recently and I asked the server what could be vegan, I said I was super easy and given just a few choices I would be happy. He only suggested the roasted potatoes and looked confused about the inquiry. From there I asked him if the veggie pizza was vegan without the cheese. He said it was and then I mentioned that a prior server had told me that the pizzas without cheese still had animal products in them. After I mentioned that past comment, my server last night said "oh yeah, everything here is covered in butter" for which I told him that butter is not vegan in any way and can I request it without butter? He said yes and I continued on with my evening. The pizza was very tasty and I hope vegan... my concern is that staff is not aware of what a vegan diet is and there are some people who will get sick if they have dairy/butter/fish. I would love to return and support any endeavors that the restaurant is making to accommodate us veggie folk! read more

Amazing, bartender is Clark Kent on the DL. Fresh cut lemons for the drinks and atmosphere. Probably the best place in Bmore

Awful. Pork shank expensive and just fat barely any meat waitstaff stinky noisy and freezing cold. Where not return.

First visit without a reservation - sat at the bar - service was average at best. The young woman who waited on us had long hair, not tied back, she was very indifferent to us. We ordered two pizzas and both were burned on the bottom, which over powered anything that was on top. We were disappointed after all of the hype. read more

My friends and i went to Birroteca last night to celebrate a friend's graduation. There were 7 of us. I made reservations two days ahead of time. The reservation was for 7:30, we were not seated until after 8:15. That is ridiculous. When we sat we were given a free bottle of prosecco for our wait, but then it still seemed like we had a weird wait to order appetizers and food. Some of us ordered the brussel sprouts, which we've had and liked before. Last night they were way too salty and fried. I felt sick after. The pizza was good, but still ended up feeling gross after those sprouts. Maybe my opinion was tainted after having to wait more than 45 min for our reservation, but i was dissapointed. I loved it the first couple times i went. read more

Birroteca takes its name from a whimsical combination of the Italian words "birra" (beer) and "enoteca," a wine bar. The energy level is high, and so is the volume of conversation, signifying comfort and enjoyment. Reserve a table in the formal area for quieter conversations. The retro-vintage charm continues with service provided by young hipsters wearing flannel shirts, jeans and genuine smiles. Despite some timing issues and unannounced change of service staff, it was refreshing to have a vibrant, welcoming and knowledgeable food service experience. The menu's impressive variety of beer reflects the restaurant's name. The limited wine list seems intentional for pairing menu food items. Read more: http://bit.ly/14VUPGO read more

We went to a party and it was our job to bring the food. In order to please everyone we got about $200 of sushi from Shoyou sushi and 8 pizzas from Birroteca. We got 5 different kinds of pizza including spicy fennel sausage, prosciutto, mushroom and duck duck goose. The duck duck goose was by far the best but all of them were just ok. This review is based solely on the pizza but I noticed during the party everyone was eating the sushi, when most people actually wanted the pizza. Between my brother and I, we can polish off about $100 of sushi so we knew there wouldn't be much left for other people. We were right and the sushi was gone and we had many pizzas left. We ended up throwing them out because no one even wanted to bring them home. I was very sad, the pizza just wasn't what we were all expecting. We all thought it was going to be this amazing artisan pizza but it just wasn't. read more

The ambiance is a little odd - half very modern brass-and-glass, half old-school steakhouse. The beer selection was a highlight, as was the arancini starter. The pizza was good and service was pretty quick at the bar, nice considering how crowded it was. The desserts weren't worth the calories, and the pumpkin pie cannoli were especially disappointing, basically taking like canned pie filling. Stick with what they do best - beer and pizza. read more

So this was another girls' night. My girlfrans and I are HUGE foodies! So you will see most of my reviews with them...or my bf. :) So we decided to go on a WEDNESDAY NIGHT and could not get a table. The wait for a table was one hour! It would have been nice to have a table instead of sitting at the bar.... So we all order a bunch of stuff from mussels, calamari, eggplant fries and brussel sprouts, and prosciutto bruschetta. Everything-and I honestly mean everything was amazing. They could put sardines on cardboard and I probably would have said it was amazing. I don't know what secret potion they are using the kitchen....so we ordered the Prosciutto Pizza and the Butternut Squash pizza. When our pizza came out, they informed us the Butternut Squash pizza had been burnt and wanted to offer us a small bite while we wait. I thought it was very thoughtful of them to offer, and they saw our long list of food already eaten between four girls (yes, we eat alot!) but we weren't going to turn down a chance to try something else from the menu. We went with the White Bean and Brocoli Bruschetta. It was so amazing. We still talk about it until this day. We want to try and make at home. hahaha Honestly, we ate and drank our faces off for a pretty penny. Do I regret it? Not at all. Well worth the money spent with good food and good company! Also, I tried the Duck Duck Goose pizza on another visit before this one. It was good and out of my comfort zone. However, I couldn't bare to eat the leftovers. It was very rich. A "one and done" pizza for me. I can't stress enough about how good this place is---I AM GIVING 5 STARS but YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS AND DO NOT GO ON THE WEEKEND. Does everyone understand? cool. haha!! Very important lesson!! Enjoy!!! read more

Went there for Sunday brunch during Restaurant Week with a group of 6. The food was amazing, and the ratio of food quality and quantity to price made the meal an outstanding value. For $20 we each had a choice of an appetizer and a main course. We tried their famous Brussels sprouts appetizer--the standout--as well as the avocado toast, which had house-grown fresh basil and a lovely bread base, and eggplant fries, which were a bit bland. For main courses we had the shrimp with polenta and poached egg-wow-the cannoli French toast-also wow with a completely different flavor palette, and the brunch pizza-delicious. This meal was so satisfying and so interesting; can't recall a better brunch anywhere. read more

I was here last night with a large bachelorette party. The beer selection was pretty good although it was missing my favorite (Heavy Seas Peg Leg Stout), but then it's not offered at most places, which is a universal disappointment and not specific to Birroteca. The evolution porter that I ordered was good and at $6, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't more. The specialty cocktail menu was small and while the drinks sounded interesting, the flavor combinations seemed to be a little over-the-top. I tried someone's Basil Berry something (some were served in a Tom Collins glass, some in a martini glass) and it was strange - heavy-handed on the basil and then a little too sweet. Perhaps a few less complex cocktails should be offered as well. The wine menu looked good enough. Our party of 20 ordered a bunch of appetizers and while they all tasted awesome, those of us who ordered the pork belly were highly disappointed with the portion size. It was the size of a postage stamp - for $12 - and 2 orders were to be shared among 6 people. It was delicious but for the portion we got, ridiculous at that price. When I pointed it out to the manager who came around to ask how things were, he said that he noticed the small-sized pork belly in the kitchen and yelled at his chefs (and for some reason felt the need to tell me that he threw a tray???) and that the situation "would be rectified". Why it wasn't "rectified" before it got to the table is absurd. And I was more surprised to see that our 2 orders were still on the bill at the end of the night. For a joint like this, I shouldn't have to point out that something that was acknowledged to be incorrect was left on the check. There really shouldn't be much of a discussion when a customer voices a $24 complaint on a $400+ bill. It should have been taken off immediately. Our party had other stops on our itinerary so I didn't want to hold up the group and make a stink about it so I let it go. But poor management and a lack of customer service/professionalism cost Birroteca 2 stars. Other appetizers that we tried were the meatballs (delicious), the fried green tomatoes (pretty good but I don't need to order them again), and others at the table were going crazy over the calamari, the peach bruschetta (although she said it tasted more like dessert than an app), and the bruschetta with burrata looked amazing. I was bummed that I didn't get to try that one. My friend and I ordered one pizza each, with the intent that we would share both (they are small - one pie is suitable for sharing for 2 people but you'd probably also want an appetizer or a salad). She ordered the Margherita which made me yearn for a Totino's frozen pizza. It was not good. The individual components of the pie were great (crust, cheese and sauce) but somehow the whole thing fell short on expectations - it may have needed more cheese or a longer bake. Something was off. The stand out was the Cipolla - pancetta, fried onions and shallots, fontina and asiago. There was no sauce but it was awesome without it. The crust on both pizzas was one of the best crusts I've ever had. Our server was funny, friendly and service-minded but perhaps a bit too stretched with a 20-top and several other tables. It took forever to put our order in but the food did come out surprisingly fast. After our order was taken, things ran pretty smoothly, aside from the conversation with the manager. Overall, great food and I would go again but probably would not order anything new because of the acknowledged inconsistency in the kitchen. read more

I went here for dinner with a group last night and while this has always been a favorite I will not be back. My friend and I split the mussels and within a few hours after we left we both were violently ill. When I called Judy to kindly let the restaurant know in the event they might want to check out the dish, the person I spoke with said, "Honestly I ate the mussels last night and I'm fine." I kindly stated that my friend and I both were sick so possibly our batch was not cooked well of contaminated. Is responses were downright rude to the point I have no interest in returning. That is no way to speak to a customer. Do yourself a favor and go to another pizza/Italian restaurant! read more

Overall, enjoyed the ambiance. Had no problem getting a table with a reso. that night. Dining area is chic but not overstated. Bar was fun and large, with good service in both areas of the restaurant. Been here twice and left feeling things were just OK. Loved the vibe of the place - rustic, stone walls, etc. but both times there were service issues. Most recently, I ordered pasta, my companions ordered pizza - the pasta came out well before the pizza and we were waiting and the bartender said they burned the pizza and had to make another. I went ahead and ate my pasta before it got cold and they comp'ed our appetizer - but this is a real faux pas. Food seems decent and they have a dynamite beer selection - just some rough patches twice now. Seems like one of the hot tables in town these days, you know - they just need to focus on getting the entire experience right. read more

We came here during lunch time on a Saturday afternoon which was really quiet and relaxing. The actual atmosphere is great and unlike anything you'll find in Hampden. But beware my fellow picky eaters. I was told by the server that I couldn't add chicken to my caesar salad because they only serve chicken on Mondays. And that "we aren't into the whole adding protein to our dishes kind of thing." A bit pretentious if you ask me. Great place to impress a first date or parents. read more

FOOD: We ordered a ton of different items. I am not going to go through all of them because every single item we ordered was fantastic. I was very pleased. We didn't order any drinks or desserts, so I will defer comment on that. The prices vary in high and moderate, but the portion size was appropriate for the cost. I don't think you can go wrong with anything ordered here. I do have to mention that my friend LOVED her pea gnocchi. SERVICE: It was very, very early on a super hot Sat. There was a moderate number of people there and therefore easy to be attentive to us. Our server was very pleasant though too, which was definitely recognized. AMBIANCE: It is very dark in here. However, the place is spacious, quiet, *HAS GREAT/EASY/LARGE PARKING LOT*, and is a very amenable to all types of patrons: friends, families, fun date, etc. RECOMMEND: 100% RETURN: 100% read more

Stopped in for a pizza spur of the moment. It's kind of tucked away but we were nextdoor at Charm Kitty. What a pleasant surprise. Our waitress was so pleasant and helpful. We had a pizza. My son is picky so we don't get a lot of toppings. But the brick oven does wonders for a simple cheese pizza. I also was impressed with the beer selection. I don't drink beer often. But I tried the Victoria. It was great. My friends ordered off the brunch menu. And they were really pleased. I will definitely go back with adults only to try different menu selections and sample more beer. read more

Live Birroteca! Service is pleasant. We shared the kale salad and Margarita pizza. Everything was delish! Do NOT leave without the KitKat dessert -- it's a heavenly torte of chocolate ganache, salted caramel and hazelnuts. My boyfriend and I ate here last night for my birthday. It was a first time for the both of us and will not be out last! The food, each course was better then the last. We took the advice of our waiter and picked the octopus -- OMG life changing! Still mad I had to share it with my boyfriend...next time we get two orders! The cheese/meat plate was nice. I've had better...nothing to write home about. We decided to get a pizza and a pasta since that's what seemed to be the highlights (advice from friends who frequent Birroteca). Boyfriend opted for pizza from the specials and I got the wild boar pasta--again life changing! The pasta was fresh and the pizza crust was perfectly cooked. For dessert we chose the molten s-mores cake... I'm mad at how good it was. Took 20 minutes, waiter warned us, and it was worth the wait. It wasn't overly sweet-- it was an adult s-mores that I will for sure get again! I don't know what the sauce was that came with the dessert but I could get that all day with the granola that came with the dish. Tip: Listen to the waiter and the specials. I'm so glad we changed our order and got the octopus. Warning: We ate in the dining room because I wanted a quieter atmosphere... sadly, it was still really loud. There is no door between the dining area and bar. The music from the bar is very loud. It was hard to hear my boyfriend at times and we sitting across from each other. We will definitely be back! From the list of pizzas, we both want to try each one at least once. read more
