We love…read morePadaek in Falls Church, but are always on the hunt for other restaurants to get our fix of funky, fresh salads with sticky rice. Esaan's menu of unique dishes, including multiple varieties of larb and papaya salad, piqued our interest. We visited the restaurant for a quick weeknight dinner, and were surprised to find the small dining room half full. Our server appeared to be the only staff on duty, but nonetheless expeditiously took our order and brought out our food. We opted for three items: the corn salad, the somtum muor, and the yum kai zap. This order ended up the ideal amount of food for us. We received the corn salad first. Sweet corn kernels arrived tossed in a spicy lime dressing accented by chunks of green beans and salted egg. I wish the salad came with more salted egg, but the sweet-savory-sour combination brought plenty of flavor. The somtum muor is described as an Essan style papaya salad with the addition of noodles, extra vegetables, and pork sausage/crackling. I did not detect any of the promised pork in the salad, but we nonetheless truly enjoyed this fiery and funky item. The dish is not for the faint of heart as it utilizes fermented fish sauce and lots of chilis, but we love these flavors and kept going back for more. Finally, the yum kai zap is best described as fried chicken larb. Juicy, tender, and lightly fried chunks of boneless chicken are tossed in toasted rice powder, chilis, onions, and herbs. The fried chicken itself carried a perfect battering which felt light and fluffy while remaining crisp throughout our meal. The nutty and herby seasonings complimented the chicken pieces quite well. The dish came with a tasty side of black sticky rice, which additionally paired well with our other salads. Our bill totaled $50, which we felt was fair given the quality and quantity of food. We are already planning our return visit for more intensely flavorful Northern Thai food, and look forward to sampling more of the menu at Esaan.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated with lots of seating. The food is really good! We were a larger group, so I got to try several dishes. I particularly enjoyed the papaya salad, fried tilapia filet (with sweet and sour sauce, and garlic chili sauce), and pineapple fried rice. I don't eat meat, but my family also enjoyed the crispy duck and panang curry with chicken. The portions are generous - I think everything but the curry would serve 2 people. If you're particularly hungry, add in an appetizer.

We ordered the kanom jeeb, crispy duck basil, and Pattaya noodles. The kanom jeeb (2/5) had a thin wonton skin with a generous meat filling and looks similar to siu mai if you're familiar with dim sum, but the dumplings themselves lacked flavor and really relied on the dipping sauce to carry the dish. The crispy duck basil (2/5) was flavorful and true to their spice level, but the batter made the duck a bit dry. The Pattaya noodles (3/5) claim to be topped with jumbo crab meat, though it was more of a light sprinkle. However, the dish was packed with seafood and included some nice jumbo scallops, which helped make up for the lack of crab. Overall, flavorful dishes but a few misses in execution.

Kiin Imm Thai has lots of pluses. First, the interior is cute and cozy with a neighborhood bistro vibe. Second, the service was excellent. We tried the Ka Prow Chicken ("basil stir fry") at level 2 spiciness and Pad See-Ew beef at level 2 spiciness. Both were delicious with a side order of brown rice. However, if we could go back in time, I think we would have ordered a Level 1 mildly spicy version of Pad See-Ew instead. Overall, the highlight of the meal was dessert (Mango and Sticky Rice), which we both devoured and is . highly recommended if you're dining in. Finally, Metro garage parking was free on weekends!

I have been in this restaurant 3 times now, but only ate the food twice. This restaurant use to be located two doors down where Viet Corner Restaurant is located now. The seating area is what you will see first when you walk into this restaurant. Decorations of some personal stuff the owner put up and some generic items as well. The smells of the food being prepared might hit your noise before you enter this establishment, or after you enter the restaurant's front door. This is depending on the time of day you arrive here. Yet it might make your mouth water:) Booths with cushions are located near the order counter and inner sanctum of the restaurant. You might be wondering where the inner sanctum is located...I say it's the kitchen where the magic happens...mind out of the gutter. Both days we ate here we sat at the same booths with cushions for our delicate asses. It makes a difference now days. Our server who (who I think of as Mitzi) brought us water and specialty drinks. On the first day we ordered the Peach Sparking Soda with chucks of peaches in the drink. I ordered one more of these drinks after finishing the first one. Now that I am writing this, I want another one. I asked Mitzi not to put the spicy Chili Garlic Glaze on the Crispy String Beans, because I don't like spicy food. My wife ordered The Spicy Yum Yum Soup with a few alterations herself. Mitzi repeated back the order before putting it into the computer. My wife's order came out how she had asked for it. My order had the Spicy Chili Garlic Sauce on it and made Crispy String Beans experience a failing grade. I think the reason I did not get this fixed is because of my wife and the superb appetizer called Nom Nom Pork Strips, which I also ordered. The flavor of each bite is explosive in your mouth. There is a video that continuously played of a news reported reacting to the food he was eating. I was having that same reaction he was. Orginally I thought he was overreacting for the camera. He WASN'T. The bathrooms are located behind the curtain, but the Wizard Of Oz will not be there. The bathrooms are not unisex; however, the men's bathroom was clean and full of signs. YES, "I saw the signs." THE FOOD EXPERIENCE: The very next day we came back to the restaurant and tried more appetizers. My wife ordered her Spicy Yum Yum Soup with more alterations. We also ordered Nom Nom Pork Strips, Grilled Pork Skewers (4), Crispy Veggie Dumpling (8), Golden Tofu Sticks and Crispy Duck Roll (2) and The Curry Puff. We did not order specialty drinks this time around and stuck to water. Since my wife doesn't eat pork, she missed out on the Exquisite Taste of flesh/meat. Nevertheless in no particular order, Nom Nom Pork Strips, Grilled Pork $9.85: Fantastic, but this time around I would have liked to dip the meat into a blue cheese, ranch dress or cheese sauce. Still, the Nom Nom Pork is still outstanding. The Grilled Pork Skewers $10.95: Served on four Skewers, the smell of the pork is overwhelmingly good. It like putting baby in the corner cause nobody warned yah. Okay, bad example. I will certainly be ordering this delicate meat again. Crispy Veggie Dumpling $7.65: You get 8 of the best of dumplings you've ever tasted...Hopefully. From the crispy crunch to a yum, yum yum, you will savor the flavor forevermore. Dip them in sauce or eat them bare, you might order more if you dare. Golden Tofu Sticks $7.65: This was not one of my favorite appetizers. The soy I found to be bland. This is one of these appetizers that must be dipped in a sauce. Sauces at this restaurant are limited, and if the store's options don't satisfy you, you have two options...possibly 3. 1, bring your own sauce. 2. Eat The Golden Tofu Sticks bare. 3. Don't order them and avoid the problem all together. TO BE CONTINUED....

Forgot a couple things at one point (sauces), but that's never a huge deal to me if I don't have to wait too long. Now for the food: It's a solid MEH for me. I ordered the kratiem prik Thai (garlic peppery), which comes with rice. This is my favorite Thai dish, which normally tells me all I need to know about a place. Got the lunch special at $14.95, which includes a spring roll. Paid $4 extra for Tom Yum, too. Garlic peppery: NOPE! It wasn't bad but the rice was overcooked and the dish, itself, was lacking flavor. I'm used to this dish being very flavorful and, dare I say, garlicky? This was neither. Added soy sauce and chili and it was still under seasoned/flavored. And at $14.95, which was only like 1-2 bucks less than the full entree price, I was not impressed. Tom Yum: lots of chicken but not as much flavor as I'm used to. There are better Tom Yuma in the area for sure. Spring roll: basic. Could've passed on it altogether. They put the sauce on it instead of serving on the side, too, in case that's not your thing. Thai tea: $5 but pass. The cup was so full of ice and the tea itself tasted like sweet orange milk with a hint of Thai tea. Decor: very cute and they have a patio! The floral decor was cute and clean. Mango mojito: $16. Yikes. These are almost city prices and it wasn't strong lol In all, not a bad experience but not an impressive one. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way for it. Not worth the $35 I ended up paying for it (this is for everything listed above except the mojito).

We got the crunchy rice with sour pork (naem khao thadaeu), pork shoulder (ping), fried catfish (patod), chicken pad thai (kua mee), and warm coconut milky dessert (bua loy). All the dishes were delicious but a bit more salty than Thai. Feels like a lot of fish sauces in all the dishes. The crunchy rice came with lettuce but ours were not the best lettuce. The fried catfish were nicely fried with a perfect coating. Definitely a dish to get. The pork shoulder is another dish to get. Nicely seasoned with sticky rice. Their version of pad thai is uniquely different than Thai. A bit more sweet but the lime makes it better. Wife wanted to try bua loy dessert. It is a warm sweet dessert that balanced out all the salty flavors of the dishes. Something to try as well. Flavor are still the same. The dishes we order were too much for 2 of us. My only complaint was the restaurant smelled like smoke when we walked in. Not the kind where there was a fire in the kitchen but more like someone smoking in the kitchen?
