I'm 44 years old, and apparently that wasn't old enough to order a beer at Silver Diner without being subjected to an unnecessary identification check. When I was asked for ID, I declined on principle. Not because I couldn't prove my age, but because I find it ridiculous to demand identification from someone clearly well beyond the legal drinking age. Now, before someone starts lecturing me about alcohol laws, let's establish a few facts. Virginia does not have a blanket law requiring restaurants to card every customer, and neither does Maryland. Maryland Alcoholic Beverages and Cannabis Code § 6-305 addresses acceptable proof of age. It does not mandate universal identification checks for every adult ordering alcohol. Here's where things get entertaining. Silver Diner's management responded to my Google review by explaining that because they operate restaurants in both Virginia and Maryland, they cannot follow a single state's alcohol laws. Seriously? That's not how state laws work. A restaurant in Virginia follows Virginia law. A restaurant in Maryland follows Maryland law. Operating in multiple states doesn't somehow create a new interstate alcohol identification requirement. Perhaps management should familiarize itself with the laws it's attempting to explain to its customers. Management also offered the bizarre justification that someone over the legal drinking age might have restrictions on their driver's license. What exactly does that have to do with an ordinary customer ordering a beer? A driver's license restriction does not automatically prohibit someone from purchasing alcohol. More importantly, being 44 years old doesn't suddenly make me a suspected criminal whose driving privileges need to be investigated before I can enjoy a beverage with dinner. And here's what I find particularly ridiculous. Under this approach, Silver Diner would apparently demand identification from a 100-year-old senior citizen sitting in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank, because heaven forbid that individual might secretly be under 21! Imagine someone who has lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the invention of the internet being asked to produce identification to prove they're old enough to order a glass of wine. Unbelievable! At what point does common sense enter the equation? Are we seriously suggesting that a centenarian might be a teenager trying to sneak past the bartender? And let's address the obvious. There is a substantial difference between preventing underage alcohol sales and treating every adult, regardless of age, as though they need to establish their identity before ordering a beer. The law establishes a minimum drinking age of 21, not a requirement that every 44-year-old produce identification on demand. I wasn't asking for special treatment. I was asking for a beer, not applying for a security clearance at the Pentagon. What makes this experience especially irritating is management's attempt to dress up an unnecessarily rigid practice as though it were some complicated legal obligation involving two different states. If you're going to invoke the law to defend your actions, at least understand what the law actually says. I declined to participate, canceled my beer order, and took my business elsewhere. It's really that simple. The irony? They were more concerned with checking the identification of a 44-year-old than serving him a beer. Congratulations, Silver Diner. You successfully prevented a middle-aged man from purchasing alcohol. Society is undoubtedly safer tonight. Perhaps next time I'll bring my passport, birth certificate, Social Security card, and two witnesses willing to testify under oath that I was born before 2005. And if I make it to 100, I'll be sure to bring my oxygen tank, Medicare card, and a notarized statement from the nursing home confirming that I am, in fact, old enough to drink. All that for a beer. Our waiter was decent, and the food was great. My family and I were seated in the back because there were more than five of us, and no other patrons were dining in that area. Everything was going well until an employee began sweeping directly in front of our table while we were eating. She continued sweeping aggressively with no regard for the fact that we were in the middle of our meal. My father politely asked her to stop, and she responded in an agitated tone that she was "just doing her job." Her response was rude and inconsiderate. What made the situation more frustrating was that she was not sweeping near any of the other patrons in the restaurant. Extremely Disappointing Experience. Terrible Service and a 45-Minute Wait for Dessert. Our experience at Silver Diner's McLean/Tysons Corner location was incredibly disappointing, and after this visit, we have no intention of returning. We arrived around 9:40 PM and were greeted and seated without any issues. Our waiter, Balik, initially seemed pleasant enough, so we expected the rest of our experience to go smoothly. Unfortunately, the service quickly went downhill. When we were seated, we informed our waiter that we were waiting for one additional person to join our group. Despite explaining this to him, he repeatedly came back to the table to ask if the person had arrived, even though we had already told him they had not. Our last guest arrived before 10 PM, and by that point, we were already getting the impression that our table was being rushed. Once everyone had arrived, we felt pressured to place our food orders rather than being given the opportunity to settle in and enjoy our evening. We understood that it was getting late, but there is a difference between being mindful of closing time and making paying customers feel like an inconvenience. After placing our orders, we also had to wait a while for our food. Nevertheless, we finished our meals before 11 PM and decided to order dessert: apple pie with a scoop of ice cream. We reasonably expected dessert to arrive within a normal amount of time, especially since we had placed the order before closing. Instead, we waited approximately 45 MINUTES for a slice of apple pie and a scoop of ice cream. Let that sink in. Forty-five minutes for a dessert that was already on display at the counter. What made this situation even more frustrating was watching our waiter stand near the counter talking with a coworker while our dessert remained unserved. From what we could see, the pies were already displayed and available, yet nobody seemed concerned about getting our order to us. Our waiter did not appear to make any meaningful effort to check on the delay or communicate with us about what was taking so long. We were left sitting there wondering whether anyone even remembered our order. Eventually, as the restaurant was approaching closing time, our apple pie was finally brought to us. The way the situation was handled made us feel rushed and uncomfortable, as though we were somehow at fault for still being there, despite having ordered our dessert well before closing. The timing and manner in which it was finally served were especially frustrating after we had already spent so long waiting. To make matters worse, the apple pie itself was not even good and burnt. After waiting 45 minutes for something so simple, we expected it to at least be worth the wait. It was not. The dessert did absolutely nothing to redeem an experience that had already been ruined by the service. The entire situation left our group feeling ignored, rushed, and genuinely disappointed. We came to a restaurant to enjoy a meal together, not to feel like an inconvenience to the staff. We placed our orders, waited patiently, and gave the restaurant plenty of time to serve us. In return, we received poor service, an unreasonable wait for dessert, a lack of communication, and food that was not even satisfying. We understand that restaurants have closing hours. However, if a restaurant is still accepting customers and taking orders, those customers should be treated with basic courtesy and professionalism. If the kitchen is closing or certain items are no longer being served, communicate that clearly. Do not accept an order, leave customers waiting for nearly an hour, and then serve a disappointing dessert as closing time approaches without making any effort to address the situation. The biggest issue was not simply the wait. It was the overall lack of attentiveness and consideration throughout the experience. A little communication, a simple update, or even an acknowledgment of the delay would have made a difference. Instead, we were left feeling that our time and our business were not valued. Silver Diner should seriously reconsider the level of service being provided at its McLean/Tysons Corner location, because this was not the standard of service we expected. Our entire group left unsatisfied, and what should have been an enjoyable evening turned into a frustrating and disappointing experience. read more

The best part of this visit was the service. Samir did an awesome job taking care of my table. I was seated quickly and had high hopes. The diner has a cool retro interior and was well staffed. I ordered and quickly had my shake, I got the S'mores flavored one and it was tasty. I got the Smash Burger and it was very disappointing. First off, it's not a smash burger. If it was, they need to do a better job of training the kitchen how to smash it. It was just a small burger. The bun was way too dense, and the fries were limp and undercooked. I would just like to start with this is 100% my bad. I hail from New Jersey... The land of diners... So I went into this diner just ordering my usual not thinking much of it. That was until I got the bill and saw that two eggs bacon and breakfast potatoes with a side of fruit cost $19 lol. And that wasn't including tip yet. In Jersey that would've been an $8 breakfast, maybe $10. For years having resided in Northern Virginia, my wife and I have been frequenting many of the Silver Diner locations and even have meals there when visiting family and friends in the NoVA area occasionally. Silver Diner has got to be one of the most consistent eateries in the country. The locations stand out with their bright and shiny semblance to 1940s and 1950s chrome laden and neuville/retro resemblance to railroad dining cars of the day. Once inside you projected back in time where you find yourself facing that good old fashioned multi colored Art Deco-style, with materials like nickel, copper, chrome trim, ceramic tile, Formica, glass and of course, jukeboxes - both a floor model, and table top versions, built by the legendary Kullman Industries of New Jersey! But what really takes the cake at Silver Diner, is the food... oh what food it is! Over the years we've acquired favorites but just about anything you pick out of their extensive menu whether breakfast, brunch (all day), lunch, snack, dinner, the (good old fashioned) blue plate specials, their cocktails, beverages, wine and beer, we're certain you'll be amazed. We've experience the likes of the fab Black Angus Meatloaf: with a 1/2 pound, nicely sliced, with tasty brown gravy, along with crunchy onion straws, delicate mashed potatoes, along with fresh vegetables; one of my personal super fave, real tender Calf's Liver with Onions and tasty and delicate mushrooms: aided in wonderfully smoked bacon and caramelized onions, also served with served with their fab mashed potatoes, gravy, and sided with fresh veggies; their incredible rendition of Cod Fish & Chips (yum) with an incredible home-made tartar sauce, coleslaw, crispy fries seasoned with Old Bay and malt vinegar - Wow!; and last but not least, an incredible rendition of their Country-Fried Steak and Eggs breakfast of perfectly (not overdone) seasoned breaded steak, smothered with just the right amount of, and fabulously tasty sausage gravy, along with Amish eggs (any way you want them, but I prefer over easy), some crispy outside and tender inside home fries covered in smooth perfectly caramelized onions, a buttermilk biscuit; and then last but not least, their Corned Beef Hash and Eggs: again, with Amish eggs any style you want, the home fries with caramelized onions, buttermilk biscuit. This waters my mouth just thinking about it. And it's amazing that with every visit, each item ever ordered is consistent to the previous visit. You order what you want, and you know it's how you've had it before, if not better. Kudos to owners, founders and cooks Bob Giaimo and Ype Von Hengst, along with your staff and management for coming up with this eatery, making it a community place, its smart regional expansion as well as keeping your offerings to patrons both tasty and consistent. We've experienced many of your locations and can honestly say the same for each of the locations considering this one has been our years long go to. Keep it up guys. One of my favorite breakfast spots when I come back home to the DMV. Service is always great and the staff is friendly! Their classic diner interior always brings back the nostalgia for me. I enjoyed seeing their new featured menu items to keep up with trends such as Dubai Chocolate. I went with a waffle, eggs and sausage while my friends enjoyed the classic breakfast. For the longest time, my son refused to come to Silver Diner. Maybe it was the service or the food but now he is older, his tastes are much more refind & adult-like. Don't get me wrong, he still likes some kids foods but he is appreciating what the adults eat. That's good and bad. Good that he is trying new and more complex meals but bad, it's more expensive. We were greeted and seated within a couple minutes. The server was attentive and efficient with our drinks (water) & our order. This evening, my son iis having Surf & Turf (Scallops & Tenderloin medallions). I am having the Flat Iron Steak. Mine came with a soup or salad and I opted with the salad. When it came out it had tomatoes along with different greens, croutons, parm cheese and caesar dressing. It was good. Our food came out later. The Flat Iron steak was ordered medium rare but it was more rare. I won't complain cause at least it isn't over cooked. See photo. I opted out of bleu cheese butter. The steak was seasoned well on the outside. The mash potatoes, spinach and heavenly fried onions were delicious. My son's tenderloins were a bit overcooked (ordered medium rare but it was more medium-medium well). They were still good. He ate it without fuss. The scallops were not cooked enough so they were on the rare side which was disappointing and tasted fishy. Oh well. He loved the fries and spinach. Overall, the items on the menus are more expensive and fancier than traditional diners, but Silver Diner isn't a normal diner. It's got upscale items and of higher quality. I was pleasantly impressed with our breakfast dining experience here. It was a Saturday morning and I was a bit worried it would be slammed. We were immediately seated by a welcoming hostess. Our waiter was prompt and full of smiles with a friendly personality. Our food service was timely and everyone enjoyed their food. My eggs were cooked to perfection and as ordered. The biscuit was fluffy and flavorful. The inside of the restaurant was busy but not too noisy or overwhelming.
