Unassuming Thai spot that's within shopping center. My friends and I ate here for a weekday dinner. We had a variety of drinks (some alcoholic). Those were all really good. My friend who isn't typically a fan of thai tea really liked Mae Ornnit's version, because it wasn't that sweet. We also liked the strawberry smoothie! Some of our food favorites were the moo ping with sticky rice as an appetizer. The pork marinade was really good! The crispy chicken with green curry was also delicious. The chicken had a great crisp, and it wasn't an overwhelming amount of green curry. The volcano tom yum dish using Mama instant noodles was a visually stunning dish. It was also tasty, served with a lot of seafood. The Mama cup was repurposed to hold veggies. I kind of wished there were more seasoning or some sauce with the veggies because they were a bit dry, but we mixed it in with the noodles, so no biggie. We devoured the mango sticky rice, that was about $9. We should've ordered 2 of those to share amongst us 4. The mango was perfectly ripe and delicious!!! All things considered, we like Mae Ornnit and will be back. Indicative of its popularity, even in the middle of a weekday afternoon, most of the tables were taken. The menu was huge (which actually was three separate menus). We started out with Crispy Wontons, Tom Kha soup and Tom Yum soup. The delicately thin Crispy Wontons were tasty. The Tom Yum soup was very good. The flavor of the spicy Tom Kha soup was also very good. Even if it's traditional to be prepared this way, I didn't like the hard pieces of lemongrass in the soup I had to pick out. I ordered the lunch special pork Phad Thai. With bits of pink-tipped barbecued pork the smoky flavored Phad Thai was good, even if it was served on a plate that was a tad too small. The Gai Tod crispy chicken came with a yellow curry sauce. The perfectly seasoned curry sauce was delicious and the chicken excellent. My Thai Iced Coffee was excellent. The best part of our meal was the mango sticky rice for dessert. The mango was sweet and ripe and the rice with condensed milk was wonderful. We do wish that they hadn't brought out entrees almost immediately after our appetizers. My dad and I love Thai food! We ordered shrimp cakes, kapow with chicken,the volcano tom yum mama pad, and a Thai spice shrimp pad Thai (Togo). The prices are definitely unbeatable! For their lunch special, the kapow and pad Thai were 11.95 each, really good portions! My dad loved the kapow and their shrimp cakes! Myself, I wasn't a huge fan of the volcano tom yum mama pad. Truthfully, I have been here twice now, and haven't tried anything other than their Thai tea. What can I say? I'm on a mission to find out who has the best tea in the DMV. Anyway, what I appreciate about this place is that they are on the Toast Local app, and they are always super nice when I come in. I would give the Thai tea, itself, a four out of five. It tends to be on the sweeter side and is the brighter orange color. If you know, you know. However, every time I enter, I am impressed by how cute the decor is and I keep telling myself I will come back for food. Yes! I went again three days after my last visit with my mom this time. I ordered their seasonal menu, Crispy Tilapia, since the server recommended it last time I visited. It was realllllly good as expected so refreshing and yet amazing texture of fries. What a hidden gem! The ambience is so nice and it is decorated so well! The service was quick and food was served hot and so fresh. Fried calamari: It was fresh, and there was a lot of squid inside, not just the fried batter. It comes with two sauces. Larb egg rolls: Came smaller than expected and skinny, but crunchy. I wish I could taste the larb more. It tasted like a lumpia. Drunken noodle with beef: Noodles were so soft and the beef was tender. It was spicy but not too spicy. Unassuming, authentic Thai restaurant in Springfield. Although the restaurant is located in an unassuming shopping center, the food tasted authentic. Really like the seasonal menu with the Thai fish cake. We also tried the chicken curry puff which was a little cold on the inside; finally, chicken dumplings were a great way to start off the meal together. For the entrees, we shared a Tom Yum noodle soup which had a nice sour and slightly spicy taste. Someone else ordered a drunken noodle which had some spiciness at the end however it wasn't my favorite as I like dishes with more vegetables such as the pottery shrimp. Similarly, kapow shrimp had a good mix of bell peppers and onions with fresh shrimp topped with a Thai sauce on the sweet side. Since it was Thursday night, restaurant wasn't extremely busy so service was attentive and polite. Like many Thai restaurants, I liked the colorful, festive decor with an homage to royalty. We came back for a Saturday lunch and decided to try a few dishes that are normally not on our Thai food staple list. We had tom kha gai soup, the fish cakes (tod mun plah), garlic sauce tofu (pad kratiem), tum lao, and crispy watercress salad. We also had Thai iced tea and a mango sticky rice dessert. Both the soup and the fish cakes hit just right. The soup had a good ratio of coconut milk in it. I think some restaurants overdo this so the soup ends up being "coconut milk soup with spices and lemongrass." There was a lot of chicken, some sliced white button mushrooms, and a lot of the inedible aromatics that add to the complex flavor of this soup. The fish cakes were good, just like the previous time. They were infused with slivers of kaffir lime leaf. The garlic tofu was good as usual. Very garlicky. The watercress salad was different than what we're used to getting, but quite good. The ground pork and seafood is in a classic larb-style base (tangy, slightly sour, slighty sweet, with a little spice -- I would actually up this from the standard spice level 1 to 2 or 3 next time). What was interesting about this dish was the crispy fried watercress. It was not oily or dense, but instead light and crunchy. Topping the watercress with jasmine rice and some of the minced pork and dressing made the perfect bite. There was a lot of seafood here: 4 good-sized shrimp, a scallop, and about 6-7 chunky pieces of squid. Finally, the tum lao. This is not for the crowd that sticks to pad thai and chicken satay. While those are good in their own right, this dish is intensely flavored. The menu describes it as the "north eastern Thai variation of papaya salad, green beans, tomatoes, carrots, olive, salted crab, homemade fermented fish sauce." I'm not a fan of this, but my dining partner is. The flavor is sweet and spicy umami-rich with salty brininess brought by the raw crab. This might be a challenge to some taste buds, but I can appreciate it and my dining partner said it was excellent. Oh, the mango sticky rice made for a great end. We were stuffed from the main dishes, but this dessert was light enough for us to enjoy without feeling over-fed. Overall, another excellent meal here. The service was great and the staff were very nice. We're bound to go back soon! read more

Waitress team was small, so they were busy attending to all the tables. Cocktails were tasty. Our second cocktail just took a little longer. Out of our food items, calamari was very tender. Enjoyed the calamari since it was just small pieces with lots of breading like other places. Plus, it came out nice and hot, which made it taste even better. The Ka Pow Bomb was great. Came there early for dinner and there was only one other table occupied so my wife asked if we could sit in a booth as the double table was a bit small and we tend to order a lot of dishes to try. The male host said no as it was for four people. I mentioned wow the restaurant is empty and the guy went muttering away that it will get full. On a Sunday, it did not get full by the time we finished dinner. So not a great start. Fortunately, we had a lady server who was great. Anyway, we ordered the following dishes: Volcano Tom Yum Mama Pad - interesting dish and good sauce but the noodles were a bit overcooked. Not crazy about the instant noodles used. Egg Lava Crab Fried Rice - great comfort food with a decent amount of crab meat. Crab meat was not fishy at all so loved this dish. Panang Curry w/chicken - my wife loved the sauce Papaya Salad - good dressing though papaya was cut a bit thicker than what we normally see. Food is on the stronger flavor side, still pretty delicious. The portion size is getting smaller, reflective of the impact of inflation. The lunch menu has a variety of items with an attractive $11.95 but the plate is tiny. I used to have a Thai food go-to place nearby but after it closed, Mae Ornnit is the closest one.
