This is one of my favorite Thai places in the area, with fantastic drunken noodles and curries, papaya salad, and other dishes. So much so that I drive 20 minutes past other Thai places to go there sometimes. That said, on my last visit, I was a little disappointed. They don't use any Pad Thai Sauce, Fish Sauce or Tamarind Paste like most places/recipes, so the color is bland. No fresh herbs, green onions, chives, bean sprouts or lime added. Came here on a week day. They only have 4 tables here, so depending if it's busy I imagine there might be a wait. That being said it wasn't busy when I went and was easy to be seated. The restaurant is located in a strip mall but in its own small parking lot. I had to park in the next section a few feet away, which is something to think about if it is raining hard. Service was great and the waiter had great knowledge of different Thai foods and mentioned it's possible to make modifications to certain dishes. Overall I enjoyed the food. I ordered boat soup, larb gai, and crispy pork appetizer. All dishes were pretty comparable to other restaurants I've been too. Lastly this place has relax feeling. Ordered takeout on New Year's Day because it was the fastest on the delivery app I used. Didn't realize it was this place that I had removed from my list years ago. Well, the spring rolls were ok. The Panang curry was good, albeit very brothy. The chicken was at least proper, which brings me to... the drunken noodles. We ordered them with pork so we didn't have chicken in both. The pork was overly big chunks, that had not been properly separated so there were giant squids of pork chunks strung together through the noodles. I wanted to eat something warm due to the recent cold temperatures, so I decided it was the day to try boat noodles! Currently, this place only has 1 table, which seats 4 people. I lucked out on a Saturday evening and got the table when I got there. The boat noodles dish (with beef) was so good!! The broth was rich and flavorful. I loved the pieces of liver and pork rinds garnished on top. I found myself using a lot of the vinegar dipping sauce that they give you on the side. My bf got the ten ta fo, which tasted delicious as well. Next time, I'm definitely ordering this for myself! We also got the moo ping appetizer, which came with sticky rice. A patient once recommended I go get thai food at Thai Food. Where? Thai food. I know, but where? Thai food. Thai food where? Yes, go try it. Where do I try thai food? Thai food Did Abbott and Costello do a gig in Thailand? Had he not pointed out the place was in Annandale, I'm pretty sure Thai Food would be ungoogle-able. My suspicion is that this was partially intentional on part of the family run operation. A local favorite amongst the Thai community, it is located in an unassuming strip mall full of Korean shops (Annandale is like the Korea Town of the greater DC burbs), the decor is dimly lit with a handful of tables, and service is not rude but not as nice as you would expect for a typical Thai restaurant. It's as if they don't give two flying curry puffs in regards to ambience, customer service, or serving generic fare of basic noodles and safe appetizers (which have received the harshest reviews) since they only want to serve their finest options only to those who are serious about appreciating authentic cuisine and know how to ask for it. There's a secret written menu that's completely in Thai at the entrance which I haven't worked up the courage to ask about, but thus far I have been pleased with their vaunted Boat Noodle Soup on the few occasions I have had an extended lunch break from work. A murky brown soup of thin rice noodles, liver, meat balls, and tender strips of pork, they give you a shot of a spicy pungent vinegar to pour in to your liking, along with fried pork cracklins for texture and ground chili powder to ramp up the spice level even higher if you're feeling like a native. It's a shame to judge this kind of joint by their pad thai, pad see ew, or a mild curry since they really seem to focus their efforts on authentic street food fare like a spicy raw shrimp salad or a deep fried flounder with spicy basil sauce and local Thai favorites less likely to appear on your classic takeout menu like stewed pork leg or khao man gai (Thai version of Hainanese chicken). Their desserts also appear to have some unique touches (mango with sticky pandan rice or taro balls soaked in coconut milk anyone?). This is like Thai Food graduate school where one earns their master's or doctorate degree in having one's taste buds refined and educated, and they seem to have no problem sending folks back to Thai food community college with basic noodles/curries if you don't care to enroll in the proper coursework. Small, intimate, family-owned Thai restaurant sandwiched between an Afghani and a hibachi place in a multicultural strip mall. I've had a lot of Thai food, but damn this place really hit the spot. The clientele is a combination of Thai nationals and everyone else and the menu has all the favorites that Americans are used to, but a heap of dishes that probably appeal to those more familiar with Thai cuisine. Really good Thai food here!!! I've ordered take out a few times and they have always been on point with service and taste. The place is tiny so always call ahead to get an estimate of the wait. My favorite dish - Lao style papaya salad. Just ask them to make it Lao style, they do it! Drunken Noodle - get it with seafood. Also, ask them to cook the noodle with high heat extra long to get that dark wok char on it. If you don't ask, they won't do it! Authentic drunken noodles have that wok char taste. Really like this Thai place in Annandale. The place itself is pretty small, and seating is limited, but the food is spectacular. The citrus and basil flavors shine in their noodle dishes, and their spicy is a subtle, but noticeable touch. One big plus of this place is that they have really big portions for their food, so you can binge on all the foods you want. There's also other fancy dishes besides the standard ones that are also worth trying. One thing they can improve is their meat quality. I feel like the way they make it is by first steaming it to cooked and then throwing it into their sautee pan with the noodles, but this method drains a lot of the moisture from their meat, making it super dry and tough. During my weekly visits to the Shilla Bakery (https://www.yelp.com/biz/shilla-bakery-and-cafe-annandale-annandale) in the same shopping center, I've often wondered if this place was worth a visit. So after seeing Hannah H's most recent glowing review as well as getting an endorsement from a Thai co-worker, I had to check the place out. My only regret was not stopping in sooner, since the food is legit!!! The interior is not fancy at all. The SMALL-ish dining room with just a few tables on the perimeter with one L-O-N-G communal table in the center, has plenty of natural light from big window in the front, with a few pictures of Thailand on the wall. Be prepared for an "intimate" dining experience during peak times. I'm always encouraged when I see patrons of a particular cuisine dining at said establishment. During my few visits, I noticed lots of Thai customers. And while I have not yet sampled the vaunted Boat Noodle Soup yet, this place cooks up some awesome noodles. First off, let me say I'm impressed by the portion sizes. I'm getting kind of annoyed at Thai joints which serve up a plate of Pad Thai or other noodle dish, and then "garnish" it with a few pieces of shrimp or pork and then charge $13 to $15...say whaaaat? My plate of Pad See Ew arrived with succulent slices of pork, plentiful Chinese Broccoli, and overflowing noodles. And the dish wasn't overly sauced, but still was very flavorful which is representative of a skilled hand in the kitchen. And the standard bearer of Thai cuisine, the Pad Thai was also exceptional. Too often nowadays, Thai restaurants feel the need to make this dish overly sweet and the noodles are gloppy. Not here, the noodles had a nice springy chew to them and the shrimp were cooked to perfection. And there was actually enough to take home for lunch leftovers the next day! I've been here quite a few times and have loved it every time. Food: Whether it's Chicken Pad Thai or Pad See Ew or Thai Food Noodle....everything I've had here has been delicious. I especially recommend the Chicken Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. I've also had the Rama (basically whatever meat or tofu you choose drenched in a rich peanut sauce...delicious) and their Lad Na (lots of broth!! You get the noodles and broth separate). I also really enjoy their duck roll appetizer and the thai dumplings (which is essentially shumai). The Thai Iced Tea is good too! Not too sweet. The portions are HUGE. BLUF: tasty food in simple setting Four of us went here for lunch on a weekday. The service is friendly and the food is generally pretty tasty. Everyone noticed how the food was however not very spicy, even when the menu indicated it would be. Also, the portions are a bit smaller than I would have expected. I liked the coziness and feel of the restaurant however the dishes here lacked consistency. We ordered the Thai dumplings, pork appetizer, crispy duck, Gulf of Thai, and drunken noodles. The Thai dumplings were pleasant with a moist bounciness, accompanied with a crisp bed of carrot and red cabbage and soy sauce. The pork appetizer was decently good, some lean and fatty pork pieces paired with a fish sauce mixed with red onion, green onion, and a toasted granular element. The gulf of Thai dish was decent, possibly previously frozen scallop pieces along with succulent shrimp, calamari, and mussels in a green curry sauce sitting on a bed of crisp green beans and julianned bell peppers. The problem with the crispy duck was the fact that the duck breast was discolored and seemed quite old and very dry. I do enjoy duck if it's available on a menu but this dish was very disappointing; I'm surprised the cook preparing it didn't have a sense of self while preparing it to be honest. Our server was very kind to take it away and of course not charge us for it. The drunken noodles were tasty and had an expected texture and heat to them. I have been trying to find a good Thai place around the Alexandria/Annandale area ever since I have moved here. I am always craving Thai food and would love to find a place that makes delicious typical Thai food such as Pad See Ew and Pad Thai. I came here with my cousin and a friend and we really liked the interior. It was small and cozy. We were a little hesitant to come here since the name was so plain and unoriginal, but we are certainly glad we had stopped by! We started off with the Goong rolls, which are shrimp wrapped around by a spring roll wrapper. These were super crispy and delicious! The dipping sauce seems like a mixture of duck sauce and fish sauce and were a good complement to the rolls. There was a total of five rolls which was a good amount to share. I ordered my go-to beef Pad See Ew and was a bit disappointed. It was very bland in taste that I had to add the chili oil that was on the table for every bite. At that point, this place was just mediocre to me because if a simple Pad See Ew dish was so bland, the other dishes would be lacking as well. However, I was totally wrong! My cousin ordered the Yum Nua, which is steak flank cooked in spicy lime sauce. Everyone at the table really enjoyed it and thought it was very flavorful. It reminded us a lot of a certain Vietnamese dish that we all grew up eating. My friend ordered Som Tom, which is a papaya salad with spicy lime dressing. This also reminded us of a Vietnamese dish, but with just a bit more sourness to it. We enjoyed the flavors of this dish, however there were black crab shell pieces that we found no purpose for in the dish. We thought maybe we could chew on it like a soft shell crab, but it was too tough and would certainly be able to cut your mouth. We didn't think it added any extra flavor to the dish either. My favorite part of this entire dining experience was the mango stick rice! This is the dessert that you should always end with at a Thai place. The mango sticky rice here is different than most places because it is actually pandan flavored! You do not often see a lot of restaurants incorporating flavors of pandan in their food, so it was a pleasant surprise when they brought this dessert out to us! This dessert has just the right amount of sweetness to it. Although I was disappointed by the Pad See Ew, all the other dishes made up for it. It's one of the few authentic places that actually preserve the Thai flavors and doesn't Americanize the flavor palette. The hubs and I came here for a later dinner, and we ordered: Moo Ping (grilled marinated sliced pork skewers, served with sticky rice; the meat was super well-marinated and flavorful, and tasted like a Thai version of galbi!); Panang Curry with chicken (a combination of red curry, coconut milk, bell peppers, green beans, and kaffir lime leaves; I remember this being watery the last time I had it, but this time around, it was thicker and creamier! It had a nice kick to it (we asked for medium spicy), and it was super tasty with the jasmine rice!); Drunken Noodle (with sit-fried wide noodles, onions, bell peppers, chili, sweet basil, and garlic sauce; we requested there to be no tomatoes and of a medium spicy level; this was okay, but it was a little sweeter than I would have liked); and, Basil Fried Rice (fried rice with onions, bell peppers, chili, and a garlic basil sauce; while the entree was super generous in portions, the rice was a little overcooked and wet, and it didn't have much of a kick; it was also slightly bland). We really wanted to like this place. We ordered pad Thai and Panang curry via delivery. The pad Thai lacked flavor completely, so much so that I contemplated adding salt. I got glimpses of the sauce in some bites, but still unremarkable. The only good thing was the portion size, which is a lot more than my go-to Thai restaurant. I absolutely love this place! It reminds me of the Mom and Pop shops that are all over Southeast Asia. I think these guys are doing the food that they love from home, not catering to American tastes. There are certain signs to look for on a Thai menu that indicate such: the option for salted crab in the papaya salad, pork liver on the menu etc. My absolute favorite Thai thing to eat in Thailand or otherwise is Tom Yum noodle, or Kway Teow Tom Yum, which here is seriously good.
