    Kao Soi
    Jens J.

We were excited to try Sugar Plam for the first time. And our first experience did not disappoint! I like their signature dish, the Kao Soi Kai. This is a red curry paste containing pieces of chicken dark meat on the bone plus egg noodles. Also tucked in the bowl to the side of the paste is a mesh of fried egg noodles. Accompanying the Kao Soi is a little ceramic tray topped with sliced shallot, mustard greens and ground chile,. I do wish that the curry paste wasn't so thick. The Drunken Noodles with seafood is very good. Service is warm and friendly, with hearty good-byes from the staff. Unfortunately, the rest of the service has not been tip-top on our last two visits. Today our server was distracted by a toddler in her care and never checked on us after she delivered our orders. We never saw her again until she, and this is a big no-no for me, brought us the check before asking if we wanted anything else. We actually did want to try the Mango Sticky Rice and the Thai iced Coffee, but oh well. I'm hesitant to mention this final point, but the men's room was dirty with toilet paper strewn all over the floor. It was obvious it had been some time since it had last been cleaned. But having said that, we would like to give Sugar Palm another chance because our first visit here was truly stellar.

My first time at Sugar Plam. All new renovations. Amazing authentic thai foods and the best service.

I was in the area and was looking for a place to sit down and have a quick dinner. I decided I wanted some Thai food and found Sugar Palm. The restaurant was quite empty except for one or two tables that were occupied. It didn't give me a great feeling, but it was a week night so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Service was quick and they came to take my order soon after I was seated. I ordered the kao soi from their menu which I enjoyed along with the spring roll that they brought out. Overall, the food was tasty.

I so wanted to give this place more stars because I know it's an uphill battle after the pandemic...but I ordered for the first time there hoping it would be my new GO TO for Thai food in my new neighborhood. The food is good; not amazing but good. 1. The crab rangoons. I usually only indulge in this appetizer like once a year and I did today...so excited to have these and was very disappointed. I think they put ONE TEASPOON of the cream cheese/crab mix in each little fan thing. These are not crab rangoons. 2. The pad Thai was a large portion. Nice! But honestly I was hoping for a lunch sized portion/prices. They don't have lunch specials/sizes/prices currently! They may need to change this up as their competition in Shirlington T.H.A.I. Has excellent lunch specials ... SUGAR PLUM just needs a little tweaking!! And I will keep going for sure. Sorry for this not as stellar review today.

First time visiting since the new management took over, and I was thoroughly impressed! The service was incredibly accommodating, and the ambiance felt both welcoming and upscale--like dining in a high-end restaurant. The food was served in generous portions and was absolutely delicious. I'll definitely be coming back!

The decor is bright with a modern feel. The server was very y prompt and polite. I had the steamed dumplings and drunken noodle. All very tasty. The drunken noodle was spicy but did not overpower the other flavors in the bowl. I will definitely be back

so yummmmmmmmmmmmy! we had the sweetest waitress ever, and loved the mango sticky rice, the summer rolls, and the chicken satay 10/10

I went to have dinner with my family yesterday. My family loves it!! This is my third time here, but this time the restaurant looks so different more modern, renovated by new owner. The food tastes so amazing with different menus. The servers are very nice with amazing service. I will bring my girlfriend to eat with me soon.

Me and my girlfriend came here after a long day of moving furniture into my new apartment across the street. This place was unassuming and had that atmosphere/feeling any other thai restaurant you've been to has. The fried shrimp spring rolls were so delicious we wanted more! The service was great and our drinks never were empty. Great place 5/5.

I ordered the X2 Salmon Panang Curry and wow, I am impressed! The grilled flavor, cooked to perfection, the sauce and the vegetables is a chef's kiss. My daughter ordered the Grilled Pork Chops with dipping sauce and Rice. The grilled flavor was really there and the meat is so tender. Ended our dinner with Mango Sticky Rice dessert. I think I found a new favorite cute little Thai restaurant. The service is excellent too.

Is there gluten free soy sauce available?

There are gluten free options but they are typically items that wouldn't have soy sauce in the recipe. I haven't noticed soy sauce as a stand alone condiment - that wouldn't really be typical for Thai.

From the Tom Ka soup right through to the Drunken Noodles - each dish we had was packed with flavours that were bold, authentic, and beautifully balanced. The service was great! Despite it being super busy - our sever was very attentive (especially on a holiday evening), and even came to let us know the kitchen was closing and if we wanted desserts, we had 10-15 mins to place the order/s. The venue itself is really unique/trendy - I would describe it as a fun, unexpected blend of a cozy French bistro aesthetic with a Thai twist--warm, stylish, and welcoming. A total gem in Old Town & I can't wait to go back!

Today, I tried the Pik Khing with beef. This is one of my go to entrees at any Thai place. Great flavors here to include a nice medium spice flavor. I have tried the Panang Curry with chicken. Very good. Normal spicy is probably too mild for me. Good flavors. I like to get a side of broccoli to add more veggies to the dish. It comes with broccoli already but I like a little more. For us, we were talking to an artist in the Torpedo Art Studio in Old Town Alexandria, admiring the work he did. It got then we started talking about lunch as he was from Hong Kong. He mentioned we go across the street and try something he liked as it was something he would have back home. So, taking his advice we walked across the street and went to Mai Thai. It was a good suggestion. We went in and had a seat. Our waitress (a wonderful woman from Guam) gave some advice and we to some time to think. In the end we decided to start with Spring Rolls. This is the freshest sliced roll of crispy veggie combinations of lettuce, celery, mixed veggies wrapped in a thin wrap and served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. It was truly fresh and tasty. The dipping sauce was unique and made this worth a meal by itself. Then, being a cold day outside, soup seemed to be a good thing for lunch. We selected some traditional bowls of soup. First was TOM KA. It was a combination of vegetables and tofu in a coconut broth with mushrooms and fresh herbs. The soup had a tint of white. It was light and tasty. It was at a room temperature which is the way you have soup in Thailand. It was refreshing and light. Next we had TOM YUM. This is a combination made from slices of chicken in a lemongrass soup with fresh mushrooms, cilantro, scallions, galangal, kaffir-lime leaves, and Thai spices. The broth was light and traditional. If you wanted more spice our hostess brought it to you. Again, this was the way I had it when I was working in the rural areas of Thailand. Nothing fancy. Nothing simple. It was true home cooking that was served to you in a method truly Thai. The lunch was simple, but the way you would eat in Thailand. The taste and flavor was what to expect. The team is wonderful and friendly. The price was fine. It was good to find Mai Thai. And maybe being told about it from an artists does make it true to say that "Art is in the eye (and mouth) of the beholder."

Was seated by a delightful young lady, and found the decor and layout to be quite pleasing; modest by elegant. As for the fare, it was indeed quite worth the walk. Ordered a bowl of Tom Yum and the Pad Thai Mun Goong. The Tom Yum was solid and quite flavorful, a flux of tangy lemongrass with the oniony sweetness of steeped scallions, and enoki mushrooms to provide some heartiness. The Pad Thai Mun Goong was a chef specialty pad Thai made with stir fried rice noodle, prawns shrimp tomalley oil (a crucial element for this version), egg and bean sprouts, naturally topped with green onions, peanuts and a lime for squeezing, and this also was quite phenomenal. Savory, sweet, a little tingle of sourness from the citrus in the mid-palate, and the juicy, briny shrimp balancing the dense carbs and rich flavorful sauce. All-in-all, I was well pleased this visit. As this is Padaek's second location, I hope they don't expand too much further/quickly and compromise on quality.

We were the first dine-in customers when we arrived yesterday evening. We were promptly seated and provided menus and water. Service overall was excellent. I like that you can select your choice of meat for your entrée: chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, combo, duck, seafood or salmon. I ordered the khao soi (my current go-to Thai dish) and JP ordered the Galae noodles. For an appetizer we ordered the Crispy Wontons. I picked pork for my khao soi and the khao soi was delicious. I liked the size of the pork and noodle portions as well as the slight sweetness and moderate spiciness of my dish. One of the best khao sois I've had in the DMV. JP picked seafood for his Galae noodles which contains an assortment of vegetable including carrot, green bean and bamboo shoot. The Galae noodles were spicy and excellent. Much less stellar were the crispy wontons. The menu bills these as deep fried chicken and shrimp wontons. I didn't observe or taste any chicken or shrimp. All we got were circular hollow burnt crackers. The dipping sauce was good though. Parking after about 5:30pm can be problematic in the tiny parking lot up front.
