This place was awesome. I saw it recommended on Reddit so we ordered delivery on a Friday night. Delivery was only $2 (+tip) and they don't upcharge the prices because they don't go through a delivery service. The only downside is you can't see the delivery progress but I felt like a kid again where you had no idea when the food would show up and you'd just sit there watching the window (it took an hour at peak Friday night). The pad Thai was delicious, not super sweet like some places make it. The crispy squid basil was also excellent, and they cut a couple small holes in the container so it was still crispy when it got to us. The prices were very reasonable as well. I went here today for a small dinner and it did not disappoint. I took the time to read their reviews before going and noticed other yelpers commenting about lack of decorations and customer service. I'll be honest, I also felt at first that our server wasn't friendly. The food completely made up for her lack of customer service. We ordered the catfish as well as the boat noodle soup. Both had the most amazing flavor and did not take long to come out. I also noticed that once we engaged our waitress in more questions and conversation, that she is just a more reserved person and not unfriendly. I went to Thai Square after hearing from a bunch of friends that it was amazing. I've actually been a few times, and overall it's good, which is why I keep going back. But this last visit just wasn't as great as I remembered. Maybe it was just an off day. I usually get the chicken pad thai, and it's really good. It has solid flavor, well cooked, and satisfying. This time though, it just didn't hit the same. Still good, just not that good. I also tried the crispy basil squid because I saw great fan reviews about it, but it ended up being way too salty for me. Overall, I'd still give it a 4. The chicken with the cashew nuts and the beef fried rice. Deets below: Beef fried rice: I'm not going to hold you. I think this might be some of the best fried rice I've had in the DMV. I didn't even have to add spice or soy sauce, but I chose to just because of who I am as a person. The rice was really really good and had enough of a hint of char to really set it off. Chicken with cashew nuts: I'm not typically into this type of dish, but this was delicious. The sauce was so good, especially when you ate it with the white rice. Potstickers: veryyyyy good Thai tea: a bit too sweet for me but very bomb and you can tell they're using high-quality tea. In all, we had a really good experience. Service could DEF be a bit friendlier but honestly, he tended to us when he needed to and the food came out quickly. Win-win. Can't wait to come back Price: we went for the lunch specials. Decent spot. Lunch with a business partner, and he picked this place. We both love Thai and it is relatively difficult to find one that disappoints so here is where we ended up. I love duck. Thought it would be sauteed or braised. Didn't notice the duck was batter dipped strips and assorted irregular pieces, so apparently I didn't read closely enough. Was deep fried with some basil leaves tossed in - which made it dry/chewy. The duck I don't think was the freshest either. It needed gravy or a sauce, that might have helped. The breading was too heavy so I ended up fixing it up when I got home with some Japanese barbecue sauce, chili oil and sesame oil drizzled. Service was very fast 'n friendly and the ambiance is welcoming. No liquor sold here, just wine, iced tea, and beer - so I had a Sapporo. Street parking was abundant and I got a space right outside the restaurant. Me and my ParkMobile app for the win. This experience overall was mid. No alcohol and average food. My friend and I stopped by Thai Square yesterday evening for dinner. I haven't been back for almost five years and remembered that their CRISPY SQUID WITH BASIL is phenomenal. Sadly, we didn't get that this time around, but the one app and one entree we got was still great. GRILLED SLICE FLANK STEAK - 13.50 Good amount of steak and it was seasoned pretty lightly, which I prefer. The steak was tender for the most part (some a bit chewier than others, but no big complaints). There was a nice dipping sauce, too. I'd recommend. PAD SEE EW - 15.95 +0 for chicken, but you'll have to pay additional for more expensive protein like beef, shrimp or seafood. Nothing crazy, but the pad see ew was solid. A bit too oily, but that's what makes it good! A good amount of chicken and Chinese broccoli. The wide flat noodles had a lot of flavor from the sauce and "wok flavor". One of the best parts about my to-go order of pad thai was the portion size! I had enough for both dinner and lunch (and I can eat a lot, lol). I will say that flavor wise, I have had better, and I've had worse. I thought the flavors were average, and perhaps a bit heavy on the oil. Granted... I'm not too picky with pad thai! Each and every time I go to Thai square, the same things are ordered. This time, my party and I decided to switch things up, and everyone got something that they haven't yet from here! This time around, my partner got yellow curry, I got crispy squid with basil, my friend got pad ped pla dook which was yellow catfish sauteed with chili paste, chili pepper, Thai eggplant and rhizome, and my other friend got pad ped moo pa which was pork sautéed with eggplant, bean sprout and chili paste (I think since she asked for mild they took out the chili peppers). I'm so happy I got crispy squid after eyeing it visit after visit. The portion was large and I was super stuffed afterwards. The basil was crispy, the sauce was sweet and tangy, and I ate the lettuce at the end to go with the last few pieces -- super yummy. My friends compared the sauce with general Tso's chicken but better, especially since the squid was amazing and the basil was a nice seasoning. The yellow curry was yummy though I was hoping it would've had more heat to it. The pad ped moo pa tasted like pad see ew without the thick noodles, and the pad ped pla dook was super flavorful, but almost too hot for my liking...however I heard if you go to Thailand, most foods are so spicy past your normal spice tolerance, so it's nice to have that splash of authenticity. My friend and I also split chicken skewers. The peanut dip they serve it with has a nice texture, and the fish sauce with cucumbers was so refreshing, I actually poured it all on top of my skewer and ate every bit of the cucumber. We also discovered that they have thank you mints right by the register. Butter mints are always great after a flavorful meal! Got recommended this place by a friend who lived in Thailand for a while. The restaurant is small and gets busy on weekends during prime time - how you know it's authentic and delicious. We got the crispy catfish salad to start. This was the dish that I came here for because I've not seen it anywhere else. The catfish was fried so thoroughly that it completely lost its shape and just tasted like fishy, umami crunchy bits. It came with green mango, onions, lettuce, and a sweet and tangy fish sauce dressing. The dish is basically a texture haven. I only hoped they gave us more dressing. For entree, we got Pad Thai and Krapow chicken. The pad Thai is good but on the sweeter side so if you prefer a savory stir-fried noodle dish I'd recommend Pad See Ew. I came here for the second time last week for lunch with colleagues. The service is always fast and they have one of the best lunch specials in town (1 app and 1 entree for under $15). The food was phenomenal! I am new to the DMV area and when my nail tech told me their entire staff goes here when they want Thai, I knew I had to check it out. The flavors are authentic and you can taste hints of the open flame they cook over in the food. The food came out relatively fast and everything was a 10/10. Will be going back! Mango coconut rice is fire! A must get if you eat here or not. It's refreshing and flavorful. We got drunken noodles and tom yom as well for entrees. The drunken noodles were filling and good, nothing to complain or struck me. However the tom yum said on the menu that it could feed 2-4 people. I've been here a few times since it's close to my Job. They gave good food and unlike some of the other Thai spots they actually offer shrimp and other seafood options. Their mild spice is just mild enough to have a little kick but not too hot. Medium is spicy but still good enough to eat at a good pace. We came here on July 4th with a small group before the fireworks in D.C. This is a go-to for my friend and his group. To get things started, we asked for a table for potentially five people. We had four at the time. They did not accommodate a fifth. We squeezed him in once he arrived later. It was a gesture (or lack thereof) that I mentally noted. Onto the curry. It was not something I enjoyed. Honestly, typing this review a month later, I get a slightly nauseous feeling recalling the taste and texture of it. The taste itself was meh; the duck made it a little better. Unfortunately, and I'm not sure if this is common with Thai food, there was a small slab of skin with hair follicles protruding out from one of the pieces. Just nasty. I probably just don't like non-Indian curry, so maybe I just need to stop trying it out. I had tasted one of the groups' fried duck and I had agreed, it was one of the best things I've ever tasted. In my opinion, this is the best Thai restaurant in the DMV area. In all honesty, that initial statement doesn't mean a whole lot from me because I personally haven't tried any thai food in Delaware, and only few in Virginia. But, I am still highly confident in Thai Square to cook some of the best Thai Food around. The actual restaurant is small and quaint, a home-like feeling decorated with a lot of Thai souvenirs. The menus come on little paddle boards with pages binder-clipped to them which I think is a bit neat but I'd still prefer a traditional folded or one-sheet menu. Back on the positive side, Thai Square's Staff are all very nice people. They are very attentive and speedy with their work. I also noticed that the restaurant has a large customer-base of Thai and Vietnamese people, which is a great sign. The food and drinks are excellent. The Thai iced tea and Thai iced Coffee are both great though. However, I think the Coffee is slightly on the sweeter side but not enough for me to complain or never order it again. But, the key is that both drinks contain milk, which is essential to cut some of the spice off of your palate. A table can get around 1 entree per person and share around family style and it will be more than enough food for anyone. Some of the must-get dishes on the menu are DEFINITELY the Fried Squid with Crispy Thai Basil, the Duck Curry and of course their Pad Thai. For the portion sizes, I think the prices are reasonable. The Fried Squid dish has a delightful savory and spicy flavor, with a really crunchy yet light texture. The plate is garnished with of course the fried basil and fried bits of garlic, both adds for extra layers of crunch in the texture. The Duck Curry has a rich complex flavor that is just excellent when eaten with rice. The Pad Thai has a very nice smoky aroma across the entire dish and even better if you ask for their spice tray and there's various chili flakes and pickled chilis. Pretty much every dish is great with rice and has at least some spice in it that can make your mouth feel like it's on fire from the start to end of your meal. Overall, whenever I am in the Arlington/D.C. area, Thai Square is in heavy consideration of a restaurant to make a stop by at and dine there leaving me definitely satisfied. read more
