I was really looking forward to the mango sticky rice from Thai Select, but it was a letdown. The portion size is comical. For a $10 dessert, what arrived looked more like a sample than a proper serving. The photo is exactly what you get, a small puck of rice and a few slices of mango. It was a quiet night.... It was.... Thanksgiving! I wasn't invited anywhere. Maybe because I am not a nice human being? Maybe because all of my friends were out of town with their partner? I ordered Tom Yum Soup, Glass noodles, green curry and papaya salad. The food was ready before the time that was given. The packaging of the food was 100/100. No spills! I came home and instantly unpacked the food. Everything was warm and even in the containers the presentation of the food looked amazing. Why would a restaurant make their food look pretty for takeout? No idea but definitely points to Thai Select. Tom Yum soup tasted wonderful. Glass noodles, I couldn't get enough of them. Coming back from being out all day, my family and I were definitely ready for something quick to eat for dinner. We found this Thai place that had a very lengthy menu for the whole family to find something they wanted. They were pretty busy with takeout and dine in that it took awhile for service, but it was worth the wait. I was able so I get a bento box for a good deal that included rolls, seaweed salad, chicken dumplings, and edamame. I shared my meal with my mom. My older brother got the same dish and loved it. My mom got the duck curry that surprised her with all the heat (which she loves)! They tried the curry puff app. They said it tasted just like a samosa. Their dinner combo option is such a great deal -- I got to try both the pad Thai and drunken noodles in one meal! And don't skip dessert -- the crepes are massive and totally worth it if you're in the mood to treat yourself. I ordered take-out and my order was done fast. I got the lunch pad thai, panang curry and thai select wing. Lunch pad thai portion size was decent but the panang curry was small. Flavorwise, both dishes were pretty good. I got thai hot for both and my idea of "thai hot" is much hotter, maybe I'll try the super hot next time. My only complaint were the thai select wings. Always tea time at Thai Select! This time I grabbed some food for my aunt and I on 10/14. I always stop in here for a Thai iced tea and no matter the time of day, it's ALWAYS poppin so naturally, I was gonna try it out. Appetizer wise, I grabbed the Kanom Jeeb (steamed for my preference) and my aunt had the Shrimp Shumai and Curry Puff. She said both of hers were really good. I'm a glutton for flavor so of course my dumpling had to be filled with everything (shrimp, pork & chicken). And I'm a sucker for sauce so it was everything I hoped it would be :) My entree was the Drunken Noodles with shrimp because well, spice is life. And my aunt had the Pad Woon Sen with chicken and shrimp. Both were great! With the drunken noodles, I could've done without the huge slices of tomato (took them out before my picture). All in all, I think this place will remain my go to for anything Thai related! And as busy as they are, my order was still ready within 15 minutes from me ordering in store. I've been to Thai Select a few times and it's a solid Thai option if you live in the neighborhood. Portions are a decent size, and there's always very quick service and plenty of seating. There's two different menus so there's lots of options including good happy hour deals. We always split a pad Thai and poke bowl, and it's one of the only Arlington restaurants that has both items on the menu. Giving it four stars because, although the food is good, it's not the best Thai food I've had in the DMV. I ordered lunch from here because I saw an amazing BOGO deal! However, I was pretty disappointed when my food was delivered. I ordered shrimp drunk noodles dinner entree and the shrimp was small, noodles were thick and round, and it was sitting in a lot of sauce with chunks of tomatoes. Definitely not what I was expecting! I also ordered the fried Thai dimplings which were ok, just wish they were crispier. In terms of portion size, I'd said it's smaller than other places. These are good ways to get lots of good food and save money too. My boo wanted to split a meal. We got some of the vegan lunch options. A Lunch Box special includes choices of several items. It's about $10 for dumplings, soup, and the entree with a protein. The Tom Yum Soup was spicy but not overwhelmingly so. It came with some vegetable dumplings. These were simple and were an appetizer that didn't spoil our appetites for the entree. Cashew Nut was a good choice. We got it with tofu. It comes with bell peppers and onions. This was somewhat lightly spicy. It makes a very good lunch and they're pretty fast. Prices aren't bad for how much you get. The food is okay -- not horrible, but certainly not delicious either. It just hits the spot when you're hungry and since options are limited in the area, this is a decent spot to add to your rotation. But my disappointment comes not from the food per se. It's from the service. I walked in for a late lunch around 2:30p, ordering take out. I saw they had a lunch combination of half chicken pad thai and half chicken panang curry. Substitutions (meat upgrades) were not allowed, which seemed weird to me. You can't even pay extra to get beef or shrimp? The combo seems like a way to get rid of their chicken as most will probably order beef or shrimp in their dishes anyway. The food came out promptly, already wrapped in a plastic bag for me. I walked the half mile back to where I was going. When I opened my food, it looked like they forgot to give me my pad thai and only gave me my curry. I was so annoyed. But then upon closer inspection, I realized they did give me both... but for some reason they packed it in a plastic container with two compartments, one with pad thai and the other with curry... on my walk, much of the curry had spilled over into my pad thai, essentially mixing the two dishes and turning my noodles into a noodle curry soup. I paid extra for the combo so I could have two different things and save some for later, but this pretty much ruined that hope. I understand that a combo plate comes with everything together but it is devoid of common sense to pack a curry and another item in the same container. Or at the very least, if you do it, let the customer know... they wrapped everything for me and just handed it to me. How was I supposed to know I needed to take extra care to not tilt the container?!? When I did eat the food, the curry was everywhere. The flavor was fine. The chicken was meh. The side of rice that came with the curry was not even warm and I think they pre-scoop rice into little containers for take-out orders. It's also notable that this location is just across the river from DC in Arlington; it's a trip that I would hesitate to make in traffic, but currently there isn't much traffic so I think it's wise to recalibrate one's mental maps to account for greater reachability. Thai cuisine creates a fairly stark issue for us vegetarians (and vegans, and people with seafood allergies) because the authentic cuisine has fish and shrimp in basically everything. This place has notably decided to offer most of its menu available vegan, though I was dismayed to learn that their tofu and vegetable option includes broccoli, while the amount of actual tofu was not huge. The drunken noodles and pad prik khing I ordered had other flavors, to be sure, with Thai basil and a reasonable dose of chili coming through. The nuance of flavors I get at-say-Beau Thai was not evident, but for quick takeout it was good enough as a sort of 3.5-star place that vegetarians of all stripes can depend on. read more
