First walk in, the interior decor was stand out. Parking in the garage is a plus and makes it an easy choice for both dinner and brunch. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout the meal. I really liked the steamed dumplings and duck rolls. The lychee espresso, pad si ew, and cry baby noodles were all solid, both in taste and presentation. Definitely ask for the spicy sauces if you like some heat. My only complaint is that I found most of the dishes a little too sweet. I don't remember Thai food being this sweet. So, I wondered if the flavors have been adjusted a bit for American tastes. Not a dealbreaker, just something I noticed. For dessert, we tried the mango cheesecake and tiramisu, and both were good. The tiramisu was less sweet and felt more like an Asian style, which I actually enjoyed. By the end of the meal, though, I realized I had eaten a lot of sweet stuff in one sitting. Overall, it was a good experience with friendly service, a nice atmosphere, and dishes that looked as good as they tasted. The only downside for me is the price. I have been here three times and ordered to go. Twice I got the basil fried rice w/chicken and once the Low Mein w/chicken. Every-time the food tasted FANTASTIC. But for 24 dollars they give a small amount. You will finish eating in one sitting and still be hungry, They put very little chicken. Aesthetically pleasing presentation from the decor to the food! Heard about the new restaurant that opened and wanted to check it out for myself. For those that enjoy happy hours, this is a great location plus they validate parking in the garage especially since it was down pouring the day I visited. Staff are wonderful and accommodating to your tolerance of spice and allergies when recommending dishes as I was unfamiliar with most of the options. I do agree with another reviewer that the portion size is less than desired for the price point and they were figuring out some of the new location challenges as I was at the bar overhearing most of the struggles. Great service but I think the food is average. I've driven by this place quite a bit and figured I should try. There is a parking garage they'll validate parking for which is good. The setting is nice inside, with very friendly servers. We started off with spring rolls but I wasn't impressed; all vegetables and a lot of wrapper. For my meal I had the garlic lover's pork, which was fair, but the vegetables were undercooked. And my wife had the crispy pork belly; however, the pork belly wasn't crispy, the bites were large, and vegetables were undercooked. We needed to ask for a knife to cut the vegetables. We've ordered multiple carryouts from Dok Khao, and they have been pretty consistent - Our go-to orders are: +the Panang Curry - a coconut curry with kaffir lime leaves and broccoli; we usually go for the fried tofu; the curry itself could be more thicker and creamier, but it still has good flavor +the Dok Khao Pad Thai - prepared with sautéed thin rice noodles, peanuts, roasted pork, egg, Chinese broccoli, bean sprouts, and a spicy sweet soy cause +the Pad Thai - with shrimp; prepared with sauteed thin rice noodles, egg, bean sprouts, sweet radish, tamarind, scallions, and crushed peanuts; we usually opt out of the egg for this one +the Kapow Fried Rice - stir-fried rice with a little bit of kick, and prepared with egg, basil, finger peppers, bell peppers, and onions We have also tried their Drunken Noodles and the Pad Si Ew, which were both just okay. Both times I've been to Dok Khao Alexandria, it's been kinda a let down. I had high hopes of this being a new neighborhood favorite of mine, but sadly, I don't see that happening. The first time I went was during their soft opening. They ended up giving me and my guests' plates to the table next to us. And when I did finally get my Pad Thai, it was very bland and underwhelming, to say the least. I decided that since that was during their soft opening, I would give them another try a month into them being open. This time, I got their Cry Baby Noodles, which is on their Cherry Blossom specials menu. It was similar to Drunken Noodles, but not as good, in my opinion. I did not like that they cut up the Shrimp in small pieces, instead of having the full Shrimp to eat. It was almost as if they were trying to hide the fact that they didn't actually put many Shrimp in the dish. Not sure if I'll be back. Probably not though. The best thing they had going was their beautiful decor. As far as the actual cuisine, nothing was nasty, but nothing was really good, either. Very mid. The space is so gorgeous! This is such a pleasant addition to the neighborhood. 2 hour parking validation after 4pm FYI! My partner and I got a nice spread of appetizers and entrees. The chive cake and gyoza were decent, but not mind blowing. I really liked the shrimp in hot pot but I was a little confused on why it came with rice. The rice was actually so good I wished I got curry instead to take advantage of it since I had a noodle dish. The creme brulee was honestly disappointing. Between it being a bit lukewarm and no crunch on the top, it was just okay. I don't doubt the other desserts might be a little better. Food: 5/5 + larb gai SPICY, but I liked it. I like when the spice level isn't automatically Americanized. I definitely didn't need the spice condiment tray for this. When I'm trying a new Thai restaurant, I always get the larb gai/papaya salad to see if they know what they're doing in the kitchen. Not only is the presentatiin beautiful but I could tell from the cut and taste of the minced chicken that it was ground in house. It wasn't overly cooked and was juicy from the chicken thighs incorporated into the ground meat. The best larb gai I've ever eaten and I've had a lot. + roti massaman curry with chicken SPICY, and GOOD. I've never had roti served as a waffle so at first I was like "hmmmm, I like to scoop and fold my food into the roti so IDK about this". With it being a waffle, I ate it more like a chip with guac. Hear me out. Dunk the roti waffle into the curry sauce, baptize it a bit, spoon more curry on it (like basting a steak), then add chicken and rice on top, eat like a chip. AMAZING! Because the roti is crisped, it'll hold it's shape. The presentation was immaculate. + coconut rice salad - If you like larb gai, you would enjoy this. The crispy coconut rice balls steal the show adding a nice crispy texture to the dish. In my opinion, it wasn't as spicy as the larb gai, but still spicy which I enjoyed. I kept looking at the menu after I ordered and ate my food, then finally decided to order this app, and I'm so glad I did. I don't recall ever seeing this on a Thai menu, so it's a stand out. Service: 5/5 + I made my reservation on Resy and although I arrived 40 mins there wasn't an issue (it was lunchtime on a Friday on their 5th day of being opening). + My server was appropriately attentive on a Friday during lunch hours. I only had to ask for water once (spicy food) any other time, she remember to fill my glass with water. She even remembered that I didn't want ice each time seh refilled my glass. + She said the coconut rice salad was one of her faves. + Any time I've come to one of these Pattana Restaurant Group locations, the service is always good. Absolutely love this addition to the potomac area. My husband and I went for the lunch special $21 for a appetizer and meal. The menu is also very extensive, they give you the opportunity to try many dishes. I had the chicken and eggplant, and he had some type of fried rice. Be advised that many of the dishes are spicy, but delicious nonetheless. The service was exceptional, team style very friendly. I loved this place! It was super cute inside without compromising the taste of the food. Everything we got was amazing, I especially loved the signature pad thai and the wonton soup. I'm a sucker for dumplings, but also the broth was great. The pad thai was spicy and flavorful. The chive cakes were dense with a strong chive flavor. Inside it was colorful and vivid, a gorgeous environment to eat and sip wine in (which was half off for happy hour). Our server was very good at giving us time and not pushing us. I am so excited that one of my favorite Thai restaurants is now in Alexandria! DokKhao's new location vibes are similar to their other ones. I honestly think they have the best crab fried rice in DMV, their famous cry baby noodles are unmatched, and you have to get the MONEY bags (golden bags)! Absolutely incredible lunch at Dok Khao! Every dish we ordered was outstanding and full of authentic flavor. The Chicken Panang and Chicken Massaman curries were rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced. The Chicken Pad Thai and Chicken Fried Rice were cooked perfectly with generous portions, and the Crab Rangoons were crispy, fresh, and some of the best we've had. The Chicken Satay was tender, flavorful, and came with a delicious peanut sauce. Everything arrived fresh, hot, and beautifully prepared. n get 2 hours of validated parking. We went over 2 hours due to slow service in the restaurant. The parking garage tried to charge $14 for 3 hours. We called the attendant and they said you only get 2 hours validated. And hung up on us. They finally charged us $6 after numerous calls and a long line of cars behind us. They should have charged $2 which was the difference between 2 hours and 3 hours. Others leaving the the parking garage were having the same issue. We won't go back due to the parking scam.
