I was excited to visit this spot. There aren't as many restaurants in Northern Virginia that specialize in a large variety of Southeastern dishes. I liked that there are a lot of different dishes from each of the countries so I could try a new dish I've never had before. All the dishes had a lot of flavor and some spice for a kick. Everything was cooked perfectly and the fried chicken wasn't oily. Note that there are bones in the fried chicken. The portion size is also pretty good. I genuinely enjoyed every dish we ordered, and I was especially glad that the flavors were not compromised by the upscale atmosphere. Each plate was presented nice and came in a satisfying portion size. I also really appreciated the menu design, especially the small flags indicating where each dish originated and sectioned in a way that was easy to read through. I recommend the papaya salad! While some pieces of the rendang melted in your mouth as expected, others were a bit too tough for my taste. The duck pad kapow was a standout, with incredible crispiness and bold flavors. The inside is really cute and aesthetic and the menu has a wide variety of Malaysian, Singaporean, and Thai dishes. I got the curry laksa which was delicious. The portions were very generous too! Most recently I went for a friend's bridal party get together; we were able to make a reservation via phone a few days prior for our table of 10 so that was nice! This is one of the places that I've been dying to visit for a while and got lucky that I was able to walk-in without a reservation on a Friday night during prime dinner hours. It was meant to be! Interior is fun, modern & trendy with lively atmosphere. Great for any occasion -- from a birthday celebration to dining solo and sitting at the bar (with a window view)! The parking situation is limited so have patience. Kudos to the bar staff who guided me where to park (Scout on the Circle Apartments or Giant). I originally parked my car at Dunkin Donuts and they warned me that I may want to relocate my vehicle so I don't risk getting towed. As for food, Southeast Impression has a lot of options on the menu and was feeling indecisive. The staff recommended I might try the soft shell crab as this is not a typical dish that you might find elsewhere. Great choice -- the perfect amount of food for someone with a big appetite and bursting with flavor. Below are the ingredients. +Signature Singapore stir-fry chili crab served with tomato, onion, ginger, shallot, garlic, egg -- comes with a side of fried buns and white rice The dish came with four soft shell crabs and although the menu suggests that this item is already spicy as noted by the green chili symbol, the bar staff asked if I liked spicy and brought out a spice rack with four compartments. I customized it by making it spicier by adding the Thai fish sauce with red chilis. There is also a Dungeness crab version though is meant to be shared between two people. They have a diverse menu of different noodle dishes, curries, soups, rice, and so so many appetizers. Service here was amazing and food came out pretty quickly. For appetizers, we ordered their fried wontons, fried calamari, salmon ceviche, and roti canai. All of them were delicious, but I highly recommend the roti canai because of how buttery the roti was and the curry was absolutely delicious! For mains, we got their pad thai, their panang curry, crab fried rice, pad see eiw, and hokkien mee. Favorites of the night here were definitely their panang curry and crab fried rice! Update: after trying a few more times here, I'm docking one star from this place. I realized it's not always a hit and your experience varies on the dish you order. That's a problem because their menu is too big both for the customers and the chefs. They do have many chefs, but too many options isn't always a good thing for restaurants. However, the incredible summer heat gets through and their AC cannot keep up during the day times, so prepare to be uncomfortably hot. I feel it's necessary to go by the dishes so I'm going to comment on a few I tried so far. The GOODS: Nasi Lemak is king. It's the best dish you can get here. The crispy chicken is out of this world. The pandan rice is amazing. The tiny crispy fish and peanuts balance it all. Roti with curry is a must-get appetizer. The roti is flaky in the right way. The curry goes so well with it and tastes like Malaysia. Teh tarik is a must get. It's basically Southeast Asian version of hot milk tea. I will always order it. Pineapple fried rice. It's spiced in the right way. The aroma is quite unique. I can't pin it. It's either wood smoke or some kind of masala. It smells great. It tastes especially better as leftover. The BADS: Me goreng. There are way too many ingredients. My taste buds are so confused. I can't tell if it's noodle with add-ons or the noodle itself is an add-on for the main add-ons. The potato chunks really wasn't doing it for me. Laksa. Ouch, terrible dish. The soup was way too rich and off to me. I will say it taste fresh though. The absolute no for me was mixing the hard texture rice noodle and the softer egg noodles. It should have been just egg noodles. It ruined the whole laksa for me. It was our first time at Southeast impressions and we were definitely impressed! We got a multitude of dishes for just two people because we were too excited and wanted to try everything. Starting up with service, our waiter was super friendly and nice. The food did take a little long, but I'm assuming it's because we got so many dishes. On a random whim of trying to find places to eat, I found this place and with the approval of the SIL, we came here for dinner. Seeing that the menu was pretty extensive, we ended up ordering a good amount of food, and I'm happy that all of them were really good. So for starters, we got: Roti Canai, Duck Larb, and a Tom Yum soup with chicken. All was good. I feel that the curry that came with the Roti Canai was tasty. Because let's be honest, Roti is roti. The Duck Large was spicy but it wasn't too spicy. It was good heat but not unbearable. The duck itself was nice and soft as well. For entrees we got three dishes. We got a KL hokkien mee, nasi goreng, mutton curry, and a pad kapow crispy duck. All of the dishes were great. They were plentiful, flavorful, and also filling. I do like they gave a jasmine rice along with coconut rice as well. For dessert we ended off with mango sticky rice along with a pandan creme brulee. Both were amazing and delicious. We started with the papaya salad, an appetizer that had enough to share for two and a good way to start off the meal. I really liked the Singapore Hokkien Mee (la) as the noodles had a moist, flavorful taste with the prawn stock along with plenty of toppings such as the shrimp, squid and fish cakes that I really liked. Plus, you can add the sambal sauce for more umami flavor. Nasi Goreng tasted a little dry so will have to try something else next time like the Hainanese chicken on rice. I've been missing Malaysian food ever since I visited last summer and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to satisfy those cravings again. We tried the nasi lemak with beef rendang. The coconut rice was delicious, but the beef was quite tough, so I think the fried chicken is probably the better way to go. We also started with the crab rangoons which were also really delicious. I am a little conflicted about my experience honestly. Ragz and I stopped by for date night today and I was very impressed both by the size and the decor of the place. It's pretty big, felt like I was at a swanky restaurant in DC and has a fun, modern vibe to it. They went for a very modern atmosphere while still rooted in Asian culture, which I loved. Absolutely LOVED their cutlery - pretty minimal plates and very clean nice brass/ gold silverware. Also impressed they provided spoons without me asking for them ( most Asian dishes will require this in my opinion). The bar area is very pretty and well lit. The place was busy at 730 pm. Take out orders were flying quickly and people kept coming and going. We showed up without reservation and couldn't get a booth, we were stuck in corner on bistro style tables. It was still pretty comfortable, but I wish we had had a chance to explore the inside better. They also have outdoor seating, which wasn't much in use when we went. Our server Brendan was really sweet and did a good job. It was weird they gave us ' new' menus, but nothing 'new' on the new menu was actually available, lol. Brendan said the kitchen needed a few days to sort things out. We had been looking forward to trying the black pepper crab but couldn't sadly. Here is my conflict - the food didn't justify the $$$$ in my opinion. It felt like I was eating from my favorite Thai local hole in the wall. I think you are simply paying for the in person experience. That being said, it was a good overall experience and nothing we ate was 'bad' honestly. For food, we shared the following - Roti kanai - delicious curry and soft, flaky roti. Def recommend this Malaysian app Tom kha soup ( lemon grass, coconut) - good flavors, maybe a tad bit too sweet. Jumbo prawns - felt pretty flavorless to me, but the accompanying green sauce was delicious. Size was great. At $27 for 2 pieces of prawn, this felt like a really bad choice ultimately Nasi Goreng - having had the traditional version during his Malaysia trip, Ragz was very excited about this. He was disappointed that the flavors were pretty muted. At the end of the day, this was just tasty fried rice Pandan crème brûlée - the dessert needed to be served at a colder temp and that made me a little mad. It was very well made though. The Pandan flavor is very delicate and mild, but delicious overall I would likely come back for a special event or bring family/ friends over. I would likely not order take out based on price alone and value for money. I'd love to check out the bar next time.
