What a great first impression as you enter into Southeast Impression with the modern design with traditional Southeast Asian decor; also, I liked the open kitchen and the green leafy theme throughout. I appreciated that Phil, our waiter, took the time to give us his opinion on the dishes we were thinking about ordering and the portion sizes. We started with the papaya salad, an appetizer that had enough to share for two and a good way to start off the meal. I really liked the Singapore Hokkien Mee (la) as the noodles had a moist, flavorful taste with the prawn stock along with plenty of toppings such as the shrimp, squid and fish cakes that I really liked. Plus, you can add the sambal sauce for more umami flavor. Nasi Goreng tasted a little dry so will have to try something else next time like the Hainanese chicken on rice. Restaurant had quite an extensive bar menu. I really liked the Hokkaido cherry fruit beer. I've been missing Malaysian food ever since I visited last summer and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to satisfy those cravings again. We tried the nasi lemak with beef rendang. The coconut rice was delicious, but the beef was quite tough, so I think the fried chicken is probably the better way to go. We also started with the crab rangoons which were also really delicious. Those I would highly recommend. I would definitely return for some noodle dishes. I am a little conflicted about my experience honestly. Ragz and I stopped by for date night today and I was very impressed both by the size and the decor of the place. It's pretty big, felt like I was at a swanky restaurant in DC and has a fun, modern vibe to it. They went for a very modern atmosphere while still rooted in Asian culture, which I loved. Absolutely LOVED their cutlery - pretty minimal plates and very clean nice brass/ gold silverware. Also impressed they provided spoons without me asking for them ( most Asian dishes will require this in my opinion). The bar area is very pretty and well lit. The place was busy at 730 pm. Take out orders were flying quickly and people kept coming and going. We showed up without reservation and couldn't get a booth, we were stuck in corner on bistro style tables. It was still pretty comfortable, but I wish we had had a chance to explore the inside better. They also have outdoor seating, which wasn't much in use when we went. Our server Brendan was really sweet and did a good job. It was weird they gave us ' new' menus, but nothing 'new' on the new menu was actually available, lol. Brendan said the kitchen needed a few days to sort things out. We had been looking forward to trying the black pepper crab but couldn't sadly. Here is my conflict - the food didn't justify the $$$$ in my opinion. It felt like I was eating from my favorite Thai local hole in the wall. I think you are simply paying for the in person experience. That being said, it was a good overall experience and nothing we ate was 'bad' honestly. For food, we shared the following - Roti kanai - delicious curry and soft, flaky roti. Def recommend this Malaysian app Tom kha soup ( lemon grass, coconut) - good flavors, maybe a tad bit too sweet. Jumbo prawns - felt pretty flavorless to me, but the accompanying green sauce was delicious. Size was great. At $27 for 2 pieces of prawn, this felt like a really bad choice ultimately Nasi Goreng - having had the traditional version during his Malaysia trip, Ragz was very excited about this. He was disappointed that the flavors were pretty muted. At the end of the day, this was just tasty fried rice Pandan crème brûlée - the dessert needed to be served at a colder temp and that made me a little mad. It was very well made though. The Pandan flavor is very delicate and mild, but delicious overall I would likely come back for a special event or bring family/ friends over. I would likely not order take out based on price alone and value for money. I'd love to check out the bar next time. So good! Came with a friend for lunch. It was empty since it was before diner rush closing (which we didn't know). Even so, they sat us and our server was the best. We got Chive pancakes, beef satay, and shrimp rolls to share. The chive pancakes are not the same as scallion pancakes, as they are MUCH thicker and heavy on the chive. Either way, it was good. The beef and shrimp were delcious! MY friend also got pineapple fried rice, which was huge. Before leaving, we saw Biscoff cheesecake and had to try it. The chicken was flavorful and the curry was seasoned just right! For our second appetizer we tried the Crispy Pork Belly & Char Siu Pork. This was honestly the best pork belly I've ever had in my life. It was cooked to perfection and the hoisin and chili garlic sauce accentuated it nicely. The next dish was packed with great flavor. Khao Soi (beef) was rich, savory, and lightly aromatic. The pickled cabbage cuts through the richness with a bright, tang. Every element in this dish was balanced perfectly. I wish I had more flatbread for the curry. We got dessert. Enough said? Pandan Creme Brulee. Get it. Super creamy, perfectly torched on top, and had this mellow, tropical vibe that just hit right. Delicious Malaysian food! There aren't many Malaysian restaurants in the United States that I would highly recommend, but this is surely one of them. The food we're all generally point on in terms of taste and overall textures - which is amazing considering they have a pretty extensive menu. The chicken satay was tender and flavorful. Though the peanut sauce could improve a little as the peanut taste isn't strong enough. Char Kuay Teow had that smoky smell to it and the overall taste was delicious. Didn't finish it last night, and I had it this morning for breakfast. KL Hokkien Mee tasted exactly how I remember it back at home in Klang Valley which includes KL. Having not had it for a long time, I was floored with the first bite of this. Hainan Chicken Rice was tasty along with the taste of the chicken rice and sauces. Only thing that was slightly different from how I remember this dish is that the chicken lacked a little ginger taste to it but it could be different variations of how it is made. Also, they didn't have soup for this dish which commonly accompany this dish. Curry Laksa is exactly how curry laksa would taste. The right type of noodles was used which allows you to have broth together with noodle every bite. Lastly, the beef rendang was tender, flavorful and everything on the plate tasted complimentary to the whole dish. We were so full that we had no space for dessert. If only I lived close by that this would become my regular restaurant - but I live more than 2000 miles away. The service was impressive. I've been meaning to come here since getting take out from here once. We decided to come here for a cousin dinner, my cousin was able to make reservations for 9 people at 6 pm on a Saturday. There is a $5 charge per person if you're a no show. There's a 2 hour dining limit that starts at the time of your reservation as well. I can see why, this place stays busy! There is parking in the garage next door, but it's pretty small. I believe some of it is reserved for residence past the gate, so there's not a lot of spots. You can also park by the Giant which is a tiny bit further away. Our waitress was super nice and efficent. My husband and I were the first to show up and our waitress immediately came to greet us with waters. And took our drink orders as well. Once everyone arrived and was seated, we got drinks and appetizers in (roti canai and the special combination plate of honey bbq pork and the roasted pork - 2 each). Both were amazing and honestly my favorite plates of the night. The roti is so flakey and buttery. The curry dipping sauce is so flavorful, we started to just eat it with a spoon - we contemplated on getting another one. The combination plate was cooked so perfectly. That crispy skin on the pork was the star. For our mains, we did family style and ordered the pad kaprow crispy duck, the pea shoots (now that were older, I'm glad my cousin insisted on getting it), and then 2 each of the Hainanese Chicken, pineapple fried rice, beef rendang, and the char kway teow. The food all came out super quickly which was impressive. And it was all so good and piping hot. The Hainanese chicken was delicious, loved the chicken fat rice it came with. The pineapple fried rice is good, it's massive though. We probably could've gotten away with just ordering 1 for all of us. The char kway teow was one of my favorites. Just great wok hei. The beef rendang was fine, I think next time I'd order something else though. The pea shoots were cooked well, they were tender and delicious. Everybody's favorite was the crispy duck. It was garlicky and so good - I wish we would've gotten 2 of those. We all ordered dessert, I got the lychee pana cotta and the Thai tea ice cream to share with my husband. The only reason I gave 4 starts is because the person they have on the front has the worst personality to be the front of the house. Doesn't even smile and has some attitude. Southeast Impression is one of my new favorite restaurants added into my restaurant rotation. I've dined here for both lunch and dinner several times in the past few months and the food is steadily consistent and delicious! My absolute favorite dish here is the Hainese chicken which would literally be my last meal on Earth in every lifetime. It comes with seasoned rice (you can also ask for extra) and 3 sauces: chili, ginger garlic, and sweet soy. My toddlers are also a big fan of this dish along with the crabmeat fried rice. As for appetizers, I love the grilled squid, salmon ceviche, roti canai (there's also a vegetarian option) and chive pancakes. They also have a wide variety of both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages as well to sip with your meal. Our service has been attentive for the most part. I'd recommend making reservations for the weekends as they definitely get busy. If you're unable to obtain street parking, you can park in the Scout or the Giant parking garages. read more

My friend and I shared the fried calamari and I think this was ok. I think this was a basic calamari and there was nothing wow about it. I ordered the Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken and it was my first time trying this dish. I really like how there was a variety of "sides" to add more texture and flavor. The fried chicken was nicely cooked and flavored and I really enjoyed the anchovies and nuts to add an additional crunch. The sambal was also good but pretty spicy. Let's talk about the interiors - this restaurant is probably one of the prettiest places in the area. It was like being transported to Southeast Asia. To start, we had some cocktails like Old Fashioned and Espresso Martini. We also had the Appetizer Platter which was a good idea since we couldn't pick an appetizer or two. I hope they can make this item more flexible in case we want to try other appetizers. For entrees, we had a few things - Nasi Lemak Pineapple Fried Rice, Hainanese Fried Rice, to name a few. All the dishes were delicious and well-made. The serving sizes were big enough to be shared. We also had some desserts, Mango Sticky Rice and Lychee Panna Cotta. The service was excellent! I just wished the portions was a tad bigger so we can enjoy the rice, chicken, and all the sauces. My favorite main dish was the Char Kway Teow. Flat rice noodles, prawn, and Chinese sausage tossed in a glistening sweet and garlicy soy sauce over a high heat to give it that wok-hei finish. 3.5 Stars - downgrading by a half star based on my past two most recent visits, which both happened within a week. This is still truly one of our most fave DMV restaurants and their Hainanese chicken rice alone is still a standout, truly - if you're from Malaysia or Singapore you'll know this dish is truly legit (though the rice is the lesser of the two compared to the chicken itself I must say). Having been to Malaysian restaurants in CA and NYC too, it truly is the best here stateside. My half star knock off is for the duck dish, Pad Kapow Crispy Duck. Both visits here the duck meat itself, while the sauce and fry were wonderful, was overcooked and dry. The first visit in the week was the worst and the second visit had slight improvements, as it was less dry. But both times ordering this dish was somewhat disappointing as I clearly remember this dish had succulent pieces of perfectly prepared duck meat on multiple visits prior. Not sure if the breast meat comes leaner these days or if cooking times need to be adjusted for it, but it wasn't as good as previous visits in the past. Second recent visit we ordered the Chinese Broccoli with crispy pork. Basically the dish is stir fried with lightly flash fried Chinese roast pork. The roast pork too was overcooked and hard, in particular the leaner parts. It came cubed and stir fried with the vegetables and I think it would have served its purpose better without the pork or perhaps in smaller chunks/cubes, as who likes hard blocks of meat. I imagine the intent of the pork is to flavor the dish, like guanciale in Italian dishes, but it seemed more meat heavy than intended, so I think something the head chef ought to revisit this with both of these dishes. Still have yet to try the Wat Dan Hor here! So until next time...service here too is always wonderful and attentive. read more

The drinks weren't that great - sorry to say. They were not balanced at all. Neither of us finished our drinks. And I was really disappointed in the "pandan" rim - it was basically green table salt. Came on a Saturday Afternoon (1 pm) and it was super crowded! We didnt make a reservation so we had to sit at the bar. The atmosphere was great and had lots of seating. We were greeted by the bartender who shared some of his personal favorites. We got the duck wraps to start which were delicious! The wrap was so yummy and reminded me of peking duck with a twist! Updating my review since I stopped by to try their lunch as well. Visited on a Wednesday at 2pm with no reservation not realizing that their lunch ends at 3pm so the meal was a little rushed. No cocktails available to order during lunch time besides beer and wines. My party of 2 ordered fried oyster as an appetizer off of a special menu. This did not "wow" me and the batter was falling off on the oysters but the flavor was still delicious and goes well with the included sauce. We also ordered the pineapple fried rice and drunken noodles with beef. Out of these two items, the drunken noodles were our favorite and we both agreed that this is the best drunken noodles we've had before from a restaurant. Looks-wise it is a little plain but flavor profile stands out. The pineapple fried rice was also good but I feel like it is on the oilier side. A good amount of shrimp, chicken, and pineapple visible. Was surprised that there are raisins in this dish. What a spectacular experience. We happen to be in this area, and the venue itself caught our eye, tons of outdoor seating, which is dog friendly. We sat down and I have to say I was a little hesitant, I have a personal fear that anytime a menu has photos... but my God I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again. Every single item we got, and we ordered a lot was truly fantastic. The only thing better than the food and service was the cocktail selection and knowledge of the bartender. Which started out as a quick lunch ended up being a long leisurely afternoon. Some of the standouts on the food side were the spicy vermicelli salad, pork belly and the squid. The restaurant can accommodate both small and large groups so you should probably make a reservation just to be safe. When it came to the food, the menu offers a variety of items from different Asian cultures. The problem I always worry about with such a diverse menu is the quality and flavor of the dishes. Unfortunately, this was the case for the items we ordered. We tried a little bit of everything from Vietnamese salads, soup from Laos, curry from Malaysia and some more. Nothing really stood out and everything was pretty average. The cocktails were also pretty pricey and tasted diluted so you are probably better off focusing on just the food if you are going to come here. With so many great options for Asian food in the area, I don't think Southeast Impression would be in the top of my list. read more

Appetizer platter was hit or miss. I liked the rocket shrimps and the triangle egg rolls from the platter. The fried calamari was dry. The roast duck curry was okay, not special. The char see ew was bland. Mango sticky rice was good but mango was not fresh. Pandan crème brûlée was average. Staff could be more attentive. They seem overwhelmed. Vibe is good. Best restaurant in the DMV so far that houses a lot of these SEA staples! Beautiful place, love the hospitable, nostalgic decor. Servers are nice and friendly. And the food is so good! Perfectly seasoned, so tasty. Their crab fried rice has this unique shape in its presentation. The tamarind shrimp has that crispy yet saucy texture. And the tom yum soup is sour and spiced enough to recommend! Oh and yeah I loved my laksa. read more

I liked this place! It's definitely a nice vibe. The decor was inviting but elevated. I liked the subtle pops of green & the dinnerware. It added to the experience. We got a selection of dishes and had our food family style. I remember us getting the tom yum soup, tamarind shrimp, sea bass, crab fried rice, & laksa. It was all delicious but I think I liked the tamarind shrimp the best. It's on pricier side but we enjoyed our meal & I'm glad we tried it! read more

If you're into Thai food, check out this spot immediately!! First let me give Gina (our waitress) and the wait staff a huge round of applause! The way they all communicated and worked together was amazing! The drinks were served by the bar or upper level staff and Gina did not miss a beat! she checked in on us as needed and explained the menu beautifully as this was our first time here. She also maintained such a vibrant attitude not just with us bur saw her providing the same level of attention and care to the tables around us! ** give this girl a raise** The atmosphere was beautiful too!!
