We are long time customers of this business. Many years a customer. I think we will be taking a long break from Sakoonthai, and going elsewhere. I ordered the following chicken: "Ginger Flavored: Stir fried with fresh ginger, onions, black mushroom, snow pea, baby corn, bell pepper in our special black bean sauce" There was no black bean sauce. Zero. Black bean sauce has a distinctive look to it, to be sure. There was barely any sauce, and what little sauce was there, was a perfectly clear sauce. I did call the restaurant right away to let them know, because I did not eat what I received. My dinner was not good and a complete waste. Unfortunate. Even more unfortunate was the fact that the person I spoke with did not seem to either believe me or care. I will add a photo of what I received in a bit. I was very much looking forward to this food so feeling mostly disappointed, is all. read more

Don't bother ordering to go. We've been customers for years and understand takeout portions may be smaller, but the last three orders have been especially disappointing. The portion didn't even come close to filling the container and could have fit in a small cereal bowl. At $18, it's simply not worth it. read more

I had a really good experience at Sakoon Thai! The food was tasty and there were a lot of options to choose from. It's also pretty affordable, especially compared to a lot of other restaurants. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, and the service was good too. Overall, a solid spot for Thai food if you're looking for something casual and reasonably priced. read more

Sakoonthai is the cutest little place where you would first discount the food because the place looks more like a cafe than a reputable restaurant. However, when you go in, you'll be surprised to find that all the flavors are pretty solid. FIrst, the crab fried rice is something that I wouldn't ordinarily order but based on the other reviews, I felt like I had to. It was solid! Also, the flavors of basil chicken were on point like any reputable Thai place. Lastly, the watercress salad was also just as good as reviewed. It was crunchy and savory, sweet but also acidic. Overall, it was everything Thai that you'd expect. I'll definitely be back! read more

We are long time customers of this place as it's so close to us and the food is really good! However, the quality of their food has gone down in the last year or so. The green curry shrimp is something we order pretty regularly and the amount of shrimp is so small and you need to pay extra for it. They are skimping on the fresh basil or it's non-existent. The drunken noodle is just average and also very low on the actual protein. Portion size has gone down perhaps to match the cost of inflation and the food tax. The food tax isn't helping restaurants either as this is the first time i've gone in on a Friday to find this place not packed. read more

I have been here 3 times now and it has been consistent and enjoyable each time - service, food, and experience overall. The restaurant is a longer, more compressed layout that has a lot of seating for a smaller space, but it can really fill up. The service is consistent across servers that I've experienced - they are neutrally friendly; the service is a little over the bare minimum, but not disappointing. They won't make you feel like you're special but instead like you're just another customer that they are going to feed and send on your way. No complaints. The food is consistently good, hence we keep coming back when we visit the area. We normally get the summer rolls, thai red curry, and pad thai. It's fresh, delicious, and something I look forward to enjoying when we are in town. read more

The pros - cute restaurant, tastefully decorated, clean. Service was attentive. Sodas reasonably priced at only $2.50. The cons - the food. I ordered the Sakoonthai Duck which is fried duck with crispy basil on top. The meat was so tough you couldn't cut it with a fork, which is a problem because they only give you a spoon and fork. So I had to pick up the pieces and bite them in half. The meat had the consistency of beef - not duck. I don't know how they made duck meat SO tough. My husband got the drunken noodles and said it was just "eh". Portions were small. At $19 for the duck I would expect leftovers, though honestly I wouldn't have taken them home anyway. The rice was good though. read more

Good weekday lunch special - could use a little more spice. 3.5 stars - the extra half a star for the side choice selection. I had the lunch special here on a Friday and it was pretty darn good. Tastes were authentic but the "spicy" dishes could have used more spice. The lunch special offers 2 sides from among 3 choices: fried spring roll, papaya salad, or tom yum chicken soup. Since I had dining companions, I tried all three. The fried spring roll was average. It was not a fried stick of tasteless goo like at some other places. It had decent structure inside and good flavor, but it was rather plain. The sweet chili sauce on it was average and also had somewhat of an artificial pinkish hue to it. The tom yum chicken soup was similarly average but tasty enough to be satisfying. In my opinion, the papaya salad was the best of these three. It was crisp and fresh tasting, and had a good hint of chili spice to it. For entrees, we had the garlic tofu, drunken noodles, and chicken pad krapow. The garlic tofu came in a ring of undercooked broccoli. It could have been steamed longer or integrated with the cooking of the tofu and sauce. The flavor profile was lighter and less intense than at other Thai restaurants. Both the drunken noodles and the pad krapow delivered with familiar flavors, but underperformed on spice level. They were both denoted on the menu with 2 chili symbols but really came out weak (1 or less on the Universal Thai Spice Scale - UTSS). I'd come back here for the lunch special, or just to try anything else off the full menu, but I'd want to ask the kitchen to up their seasoning to match UTSS standards. read more

When we are up in the D.C. area, this is one of our favorite stops! I ordered the Thai Red curry (with extra sauce - you will understand when you try it)! My daughter ordered the Pad Thai with tofu. We split the Kanin Jeeb Dumplings and Spring Rolls! This place is always clean, never too busy (they do a lot of take out orders), the staff is very kind and attentive, and the food is AMAZING!!! Okay so I've been here multiple times but this is the first time I've been here for a lunch special and I really liked it. You get not one appetizer but you get TWO choices ! I got the Tom yum soup and the papaya salad and I liked the fact that I got variety ! I also ordered the ginger chicken dish and it was delicious and if you can't handle the spice no worries because it was savory and not spicy at all. The staff was very friendly and it's always so cute inside. I will definitely be back for the lunch special. read more

A solid go to Thai restaurant in the Centreville area! The panang curry was delicious. I would just use the broth on rice with nothing else and be happy. I ordered my curry hot and they added a good amount of spice to it. The saloon duck was also a very flavorful dish. read more

Used to love their food. Something changed. We were there a few months back - the curries were not tasty at all.

Still my go-to Thai restaurant in Clifton. This is a small but mighty restaurant with only hits. I've tried most of the things on the menu and have so many favorites from chicken ka paow, pad Thai, drunken noodles, green curry, tofu kapaow. The most surprising thing on the menu is their yum watercress salad. I've never seen this on the menu any where, but it's delicious. It's deep fried watercress with shrimp, squid, chicken, in a fish saucey, lime dressing with cilantro and cashew. It's tangy, savory, spicy- I'm drooling. It's a must try! Service has always been good whether dining in or taking out. read more

Great decor inside with some nice outdoor seating options. We saw it had good reviews and after eating the food I understood why. The flavors they used were strong and tasty and when you ask for it to be spicy that's what they give you! Papaya salad was very fresh and had a great ratio citrus to fish sauce. The red curry was packed with flavor and the drunken noodles did not congeal at all. Really thoughtful and quick service read more

We wanted to try Thai food that was not in our area and found this spot! I almost always order the Kapow Chicken and I love how it came with string beans since not many Thai restaurants have Kapow with string beans. It was flavorful, but I do prefer it to be more spicy. We also got the Massaman Curry and shared some Satay as well as Tom Yum Soup. Everything was pretty good and the tom yum soup was definitely my favorite! The interior is quite small with limited seating during prime dining hours. I love how they decorated the dining area; so cute! Very small restaurant inside but the decor is adorable and the service was fast and friendly. I got the Tom yum soup and my friends got the fried rice and chicken curry. I've also had take out here too and I enjoyed it. read more

Ordered to go here because of the reviews. New to VA and looking for a new Thai place to order from. I ordered the pad Thai veggie with extra egg and it tasted pretty good, however I would have to say that there were too many veggies on top; I normally like the vegetables but I didn't quite like the cabbage that was added. I think as far as pad Thai goes it was good enough to order again, maybe I'll take out certain vegetables next time. The Thai tea that I ordered was delicious and freshly made when my husband came to pick up our order so I would say that the service was great. My husband ordered the Pad See Eiw Noodle and he didn't like it too much and I tried it and the flavor just wasn't there. We also ordered spring rolls which I didn't know came with meat (not a vegetarian but usually spring rolls don't come with meat at all), and would love to have known that ahead of time. The taste was just OK, there was way too much pepper used as a spice, so I was kind of disappointed. We tried the shrimp cake appetizer as well and I thought there would be more to it but it was literally just fried shrimp with no flavor and shaped like little circular disks. All in all I would say I'll try it again because it was just my first time and we didn't try everything, but hope to get better tasting items next time. read more

This is my favorite place to order Thai food from with my husband. We normally do take out because the inside of the restaurant is quite small (wouldn't recommend groups of more than 4) and we only live a few minutes away. The staff is always very friendly to us over the phone and in person. We love their Thai iced tea which is packed with flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. For food we really enjoy their spring rolls, pad thai and massuman curry. The curry is the best we have found in the area and we normally add chicken to the pad thai which is always a big hit. Make sure to remember to specify the spice level you would like for your entrees as they are all customizable to your liking! The spring rolls are also great but just beware the portion may be smaller than other places (order comes with 3). We feel so lucky to have this spot right around the corner from us and would encourage you to check it out as well. Call early or make reservations ahead of time on the weekends because it can get pretty busy. read more

Sakoonthai - Thai Ice Tea - DELISH - Thai Near Me - Clifton, Virginia

Sakoonthai is the best Thai in Northern Virginia PERIODT. When their Fair Lakes location closed down several years ago, I searched high and low for a place that could replicate their fragrant, yellow chicken curry, but to no avail. So, when I discovered that they had reopened in Centreville, I immediately gathered my friends for a nostalgic trip down memory lane. And let me tell you, we had an absolute feast! The yellow chicken curry was just as delicious, if not better, than I remembered. We also indulged in the yum watercress salad, a specialty that is not commonly found on Thai restaurant menus. Additionally, we enjoyed a variety of noodles, rice dishes, and seafood. Despite ordering a full table's worth of food, our final bill came out to slightly less than $100. IN THIS ECONOMY. We were pleasantly surprised and vowed to support Sakoonthai again. If you're in search of a cozy place with fantastic food, look no further than Sakoonthai. read more

Store dining during lunch. 1. No one is watching the door to seat people. We stood there for 6min until til someone finally acknowledged us. 2. We ordered shrimp pad Thai , Larb Gai and 2 appetizers. The appetizer and my Larb Gai came out in about 15 min. However the pad Thai has not showed up after an additional 20min. I am now 35-40min on and can't enjoy food with my wife cause I'm still waiting on her food. I don't care how good your food is. If your kitchen can't better time there food and your customer service at least standard then I won't be coming back. read more

Daughter and I went here for lunch on a recent Friday afternoon. I remember when it used to be in a bigger space near Office Depot by Costco. The place is much smaller now. Decor is cute and cozy, if a little tight. We got the lunch special, which includes two small appetizers and a main dish. My DD got spring roll and papaya salad and Pad Thai for her main. I got Tom Yum soup and papaya salad, with ground chicken and eggplant as the main. She got a Thai iced tea as well. Apps were excellent. Papaya salad was surprisingly spicy. I loved it, but my DD thought it was too spicy. If you have read any of my other reviews, you know I have a pretty high spice tolerance. Pad Thai was good at a medium spice. My dish was listed as two chilis, but I didn't find it very spicy. I could have gone up a chili. All in all, good service quick and friendly. Everything was clean and well organized. Thumbs up. read more

Came here for dinner, luckily we came early because this place is tiny! We ordered: Fried Flounder - 10/10 Sakoon Fried Rice - 10/10 Red Chicken Curry - 6/10 Papaya Salad - 10/10 Beef Drunken Noodles - 4/10 Crispy Spring Rolls - 9/10 Curry Puffs - 6/10 Tom Yum Soup - 5/10 Bowl of Vegetables 10/10 Fried flounder was probably my favorite part of the meal, fried to perfection, served with rice. Their special fried rice was pretty tasty too, their red curry was lacking, it was missing something. Papaya salad is very delicious, beef drunken noodles, i only got half the size of the order, and it didn't taste good. Crispy spring rolls tasted alright, curry puffs was alright, tom yum was a little bit on the sour side and the color just didn't look right. Steamed veggies is just steamed veggies. Overall I definitely would come back for more, come early or make reservation if you have a big group. read more

Located in the Colonnade at Union Mill, Sakoonthai in Clifton is a small, cozy spot with a neat touch of wine bottle decor. I tried their Duck Curry and Pad Thai, both decent choices. The curry had a nice mix of flavors and the Pad Thai was pretty tasty. The Papaya Salad stood out with its sweet and spicy taste, plus a good hit of lime. It was a refreshing part of the meal, and probably one of my favorite side dishes. Service was fine - attentive and friendly. The place has a relaxed vibe, which is nice. Also had the Yum Watercress, an interesting dish, and they also offer a variety of curries, Tom Yum soups, Thai tea, fried rice, and more. Overall, Sakoonthai is a solid choice for Thai food in Clifton. It's a good spot for a casual meal. Worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

A solid 5 star choice I have eaten at many Thai restaurants and so many good Thai restaurants don't even use Thai chili peppers. Why? When I ordered the pad see eiw noodles, it was super fast and efficient. Sakoonthai is always efficient and COVID conscious. The takeout was great and flavorful. I decided to get tofu this time instead of chicken or beef as my protein and I would say it is really worth it. The tofu had a great texture and soaked the flavor in as well. I appreciate the amount of tofu and broccoli as some places don't seem to put enough of the protein or extras in. read more

Geez another review like this in the union mill shopping center. I came in to pick up food and the person serving me was extremely dismissive. She was on the phone but I had no problem waiting until she got off so that I could be addressed properly. It was like I was being rushed out the restaurant and quite frankly I won't be back. This shopping center may just favor that type of behavior and that's unfortunate that you'll have to continuously lose business because people don't want to treat others kindly. Be kind! read more
