We were there back in March. Came from Texas and my bucket list item was to have a fresh Maine lobster in Maine. We had originally selected Allison's restaurant in Kennibunc Maine. On the way there stoped at a light house and as we were walking around met this wonderful couple named Joann and James. Told them our mission and they said stop and go to Billy's CHOWDAH House. So we did and simply put I got my Fresh Maine Lobster and my family got their meals and we all had what I might say was the best seafood meal of our lives. A truly underwhelming dinner experience. We got their "famous" clam chowder, and honestly it was lukewarm, the chowder was a thin broth which was way too milky, not creamy, and flavorless. A large order of whole belly clams followed ... at least they claimed they were whole belly clams. Seemed more like a few whole belly clams mixed in with clam strips and a hefty amount of fried batter bits. Disappointing is putting it mildly. I went to Billy's Chowder house on Sunday night with my family. I have been coming here every summer for 40 years. I've never had such a horrible experience at this place. We wait d an hour to sit, which is understandable. Then we waited an hour and 15 minutes to get our food. The food came out at different times for the whole party and some of it was cold and some of the orders were wrong. No one checked in on us, no one apologized for the late service, no apologize for the mistakes. I was in the restaurant industry for 25 years so I understand what it is to be under stressful situation, but nobody tried to apologize or accommodate for their lack of service, late delivery, and their mistakes in the food order. This is completely unacceptable and I will never go here again.. if I owned this restaurant, , I would touch every table and make sure that they were having a good experience and at least apologize for the mistakes or the long wait. Had lunch here today 2/14/25. Was driving by and saw a descent amount of cars in the parking lot and figured it would be a safe choice for lunch. Staff and view were great but cannot say the same for food. Had a bowl of seafood food ($22). It had at most 2 ounces of seafood and was 90% broth. Had a descent flavor. The two packs of oyster crackers gave it some substance. My wife had steamers. Good amount served but couldn't get thru them did to the overwhelming amount of saltiness (just destroyed the flavor). We went to Billy's last Thursday night for drinks. The atmosphere at the bar was great. Live music. Nice people who were very welcoming. Fun bartenders that make tasty drinks. With a solid beer collection. We had enjoyable conversations with a few guests. And definitely will be back. The food looked delicious and we definitely will eat when there next time. Had visited Billy's on our last visit to Maine and here again for a graduation. I love a whole belly clam and before ordering them our Server Tiffany went to the extra effort to check that the clams they had weren't too large or too small as it turned out they were medium and they were delicious and sweet. I got the large and although a little pricey you get what you pay for. The lobster stew was great with large chunks of lobster. My wife shared my clams and got a Side salad which would be a regular size salad in the restaurants we are accustomed to in the DC area. The service was above and beyond and Tiffany was attentive and very helpful she even let me taste test the beer choices before I ordered. Was up in the Wells area for business. Got there late and hadn't eaten. Looked on the app and went to Billy's since they were open till 9 and it was 815. Got in and seated quickly. Waiter took my order quickly of clam chowder, fried calamari and a fish sandwich. Waiter was also taking care of a large table next to me and that was his focus was for most of the time I was there. Food was mid. Clam chowder had decent flavo, but very little clams. Tons of potatoes, cream and butter. Calamari was also decent. Good quantity but heavy on the frying oil when it came out. Fish sandwich was the best part of the meal and I enjoyed the fish (good amount) and flavorful. Fish was also fried well without the same amount of oil as the calamari. Waiter was still tied up and I saw another waiter bring her table a piece of blueberry pie. I waited as the waiter was explaining and signing up the family on their rewards program (must be a spiff if you sign people up for the waitstaff) since he was so focused on them and explaining every detail. When he came back around I asked for a piece of pie even if it needed to go. He explained that the kitchen was closed. It was 902. Don't really need to cook the pie, just cut a piece, place it in a container and put it a bag. nope adamant about the place closed. I usually tip 20+% but didn't like the attitude or the service. In summary, the place is old inside. The food was mid and the service was less than acceptable. Better places down in Ogunquit, see my other reviews, with better food, service and are atmosphere. Went there today 6/17/25 the food was just okay definitely not great for sure. Got my bill and the waiter asked if we would like to join the rewards program which why would you not? But until I got my recipe and FYI becarefull they will make a dnake move on your receipt of charging you $10.00 to join the rewards program which I was never told about a change for a rewards program. And sometimes, you find this place that's good for both. Billy's menu has it all, so figuring out what you want can be a bit overwhelming. I opted for something light, a shrimp linguine. The husband wanted to continue his lobster streak. Food was ready for pickup less than 30min after calling in, and I was impressed to see how many families were still waiting outside to get let in, despite being a big restaurant and an even bigger parking lot. Guess it's a popular spot for Saturday night vibes. Both meals were fresh and tasty, neither feeling too heavy despite being all buttered up. Lemon is a nice touch. I wouldn't say any flavors were mind-blowing or surprising, but it was filling and yummy, and tasted like the perfect end to our excessive indulging over the weekend. Also got a local pale ale. The lobster serving was massive, though, even more than I could finish, and simply dressed, not buttered.
