I bought a bike there a few months ago so I was allowed the first basic tune-up for free within one year of purchase. Tune-up done last month, was able to ride the bike when the temps were up last week. Shifting was all over the place; chain skipping in low gears. I own a couple of bikes, one is a Trek Domane SL6. I moved to Des Moines last year and was in need of a new LBS (local bike shop), and found this massive, gorgeous store that specializes in Trek bikes - as well as other brands. My Trek had done a few thousand miles and needed some love so I had them do a major service on my bike. Got it back and it was like a new bike! Great service. I have been here many times in the past year to upgrade accessories and gear and have always had great service/conversations with the folks working here. And for heaven's sake, if you are looking to buy a bike they have THOUSANDS of bikes at this place!!! The selection is phenomenal! Why buy local? Over a year ago I purchased new pedals at Bike World. I took them home to install. I made a dumb mistake and messed up the threads. Mad at myself I put off getting this fixed. I punishing myself by riding an old bike and admiring my good bike hanging on the wall as a trophy of my mistake. Today I did the walk of shame to the store and confessed my mistake. I expected to leave my bike for a few weeks and to pay for new parts. What I got at the service counter was a knowing smile, a hey let's see what we can do, and a glimmer of hope. 10 minutes later with the proper tools and expertise I walked out the door with the problem solved. I havent been to their new location. But I did go in to buy a new trek bike. I was impressed with the sales person on the floor that helped size me up and get the right bike for me and then made sure it was adjusted for me to get the best ride from it. The bike I wanted was on sale which was awesome but all they had left for color selection was a Robin egg blue. Would have preferred the black colored one..but beggars cant be choosers when it comes to sales season. Lol..only negative was the time it took to put a kickstand on the bike after I bought it and was waiting around for it. Salesman didnt follow up with the service tech guy and my bike just sat there. I like all the staff who work there and their customer service attitude. As far as I have seen, one looks down at any potential customer or makes them feel stupid. The store is spacious and carries lots of products that I enjoy browsing through. I like the tune-up offerings and the ability to see or talk to them where they check in the bikes. I like the new location for the Bike World store on EP True Parkway. I feel good just going into the store. read more

I went in with some shifting issues with my new chain. Had a call that bottom bracket was junk, which I new, and had an option for replacement and also found my middle chain ring was worn out and replaced. We just had a great experience at Bike World in West Des Moines Iowa. We are a couple of cross-country cyclists on a Cannondale tandem that needed some work. Despite RAGBRAI maintenance business that they already had, they were able to fit us in the very next day (which happened to be a scheduled rest day for us), and completely went through our drivetrain to my specifications, and made a couple of very good judgement calls on other things that needed attention. On top of that excellent service, we also got a bill that we were pleased as punch with - very, very reasonable. The attention to service was second to none! In the current bike shortage, I had to travel 3 hours to find my frame size, so my contact began with a phone call with Joe. He patiently explained to this former road racer how the touring bike and components varies from the frame and components of 20 years ago. You can't do that without a depth of knowledge and a LOT of patience! He gave me his email for follow-up questions and answered those promptly and in detail. Upon my arrival in Des Moines he spent the better part of a day getting everything set up just as I wished. There wasn't an enormous selection for the 6 year-old and under set, but with the help of friendly sales staff, we ended up with exactly what we were looking for...an awesome, fast, bright colored 18" bike with training wheels. Apparently one must make an appointment or purchase a bicycle to get service. They do not waste time on customers bothering them with questions on products or services. Been in twice and won't go back. Snobby sales guy, will withhold name. His overall attitude was one of arrogance, "there's a reason Trek sells more bikes than anyone else" and the arrogance wasn't only in the comment, there are better and there are worse, number of sales doesn't necessarily mean much it was the manner in which this, and other things were said. Like the fact that he is a collector and owns 28 road bikes (many of them Italian). So the bravado of an elitist doesn't get you points with me. I own a Trek 520 Touring Bike, so when I asked for some information on a Trek mountain bike and compared a couple components with another bike I had ridden I was told, "if you want that bike, go buy it". Basically, the guy has difficulty holding a civil adult conversation and was just plain rude. So if the people from WDM Bike World read this......Urbandale Bike World hands down superior in every way including nice well-mannered and personable employees. They will continue to get my business and I won't step foot in WDM BW ever again. read more
