On a whim we rode our bicycles downtown. This was an adventure. We ended out outside the bike store. Inside was fun and the gentleman that helped us was very kind and enthusiastic about everything biking. He let us know that a couple Wed a month they have a woman's bike discussion in the evening where they only have the ladies in to discuss all things bike. How to care for your bike, how to fix a flat and so much more. They helped adjust my mom's bike seat and away we went.

The idea is awesome: on demand, low impact transportation. B-cycle is one of a number of bike rental stations in downtown Des Moines. In B-cycle's own words, "B-cycle is a next-gen bike sharing system. In layman's terms: B-cycles are there when you want one and gone when you don't. Just swipe your card, grab a bike, and get to where you're going." The rides aren't posh: clean and minimal to reduce maintenance, but tricked out with a basket on the handle bars for the quick run to one end of downtown to grab some carryout. As for the ride Some details from the website: There are, as of this writing, about 20 bikes and four docking locations in downtown.* Cost options run from $5.30 a day (24 hour clock, but the docks work from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.) though a roughly $30 a month and $53 a year options are available. Bike availability (and other information) can be checked at the website. Other locations include: 625 Grand Avenue, 520 Robert D. Ray Drive, and 1 Line Drive in Principal Park.

Not too sure why it took me so long to just try it out - I am not a cyclist nor am I really athletic but the Bike didn't care! This is a great way to see downtown Des Moines! Grab a friend or go Solo! Take a few fun photos- It comes with a handy lock and basket for your convenience! You can return the bike to any of the bike areas too!

What a great thing that they started here in Des Moines. Do you want to get into biking but not ready to drop $500 on a nice bike. If that is the case check this place out. This is a non-profit organization that is trying to help build the bike friendly community in DeMo. Don't you think we should be? We do have one of the largest state bike rides in the nation/world with RAGBRAI. They take old bikes and make them new again, and sale them for a low price $40 - $125. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate about bikes. They are trying to keep bikes out of landfills. If you are looking to upgrade your bike please consider donating it to the Des Moines Bicycle Collective. Even if it is a bike that is not in the best of shape they will take it. I can't say enough about how awesome I think this group is! I even donate money to them once a year. They are the first place to ever write me a letter and what they did with the money and to thank me.

Rented a bike today and it was great. I have not been on a bike for years. The bike was easy to ride. B-cycle is a great service.

At the Bike Collective, they actually let me use a bench, showed me how to replace the tube, and only charged me for the tube itself.

I will not go back to Beaverdale Bicycles again. I had read reviews here on Google and assumed that…read morethis was a great place, yet it was not. They quoted one thing, then I received two calls saying they had to repair "extra" things. I originally went in and said it had two problems (the gear shifter not shifting and the back break not functioning). -I went to the store he didn't add my receipt up correct (15.00 extra) -He told me he didn't have the part he quoted me on the phone so he had to install a different one, more expensive, and charged me for it saying "you'll like it better". -He never rode my back to test it When I picked up the bike and got home I noticed the back tire was flat. You would think that a bicycle repair would have tested it by seating on it and riding the last time to check to see if the problem was fixed and noticed that the tire was flat, yet he didn't. When I went in he starting telling me that there was no way he did it. After talking with him he realized he had made a mistake, yet wasn't humble and gave me an apology that he said he "might have taken air out to fit the brake on and forgot later to put air back in" A week later after riding it, the bike still has one of the same two problems that I went in for originally, the gear shifter. If he had ridden the bike just one time after repairing it he would have noticed the gear shifter problem and no air in the tire. He didn't. I was given a quote for $65 for a tune up, and ended up paying $115.00. I could have bought a new bike from Walmart for that price. I will go to a better place that provides exceptional service.
