They wouldn't help me tighten a proprietary nut on my E-Bike conversion because I didn't buy it here. I get it. It's a stretch, but perhaps there could possibly be a liability issue. The one star is solely based on the caustic way I was sent packing. Chris at the Highland Park location could use some training in customer service. I'm in sales, and although I hate to do it, sometimes I have to tell the customer no. However, I always do it politely and try to suggest a viable alternative. I received neither here today. I won't return, and I certainly won't be recommending this place to anyone. I'm more likely to warn everyone I can to steer clear of this establishment. Just a great bike shop- eclectic people. Dan is the owner and goes out of his way to try to help you find a suitable bike that is appropriate for you. I've checked several bike shops out and they have the best selection of e-bikes in the area and I'm committed to provide small businesses with business. In Hawaii we used to say you want to be a local, buy local. I could have saved some money online but I wanted to get something with high quality anf with long-term good service. Dan is the owner and he's a really busy guy but he'll spend time with you helping you find the right bike. He's got a lot of people pulling at him so you just have to go in there and be patient. I always think I want him to provide me the same top quality service that he's providing to someone else so I'm willing to wait. It is a two-man shop that's the other thing you have to remember. I got the benno step through bike, with an electric assist it's going to enable me to bike again because I'm having trouble in my older age about lifting my leg over the bike. Give me a perfect assist to go up and down hills but it's not a power boost type thing. It's also very classy looking. I recommend seeing them but remember it's a two-man shop. read more

NOT SO ICHI-BAN AFTER ALL... I had initially written an enthusiastic and supportive review of Ichi Bike, being impressed with the sweet restoration and resale work they are doing with vintage bikes. Since that writing, I took two bikes in for some basics servicing work and came away disappointed. ICHI-BAN RAT BIKES As originally shared... Remember the bike you had as a kid (or wished that you had)? The glint of the metallic-flecked banana seat and shining sissy bar? The low rider handlebars reaching into the sky? The thrill of an endless wheelie, the hands-free neighborhood cruise, or skidding to a screaming stop while standing hard on the pedals? The plain and simple awesomeness of riding that bike? Those days can be yours again! While Ichi Bike serves cyclists of all descriptions, their niche is in restoring and/or customizing sweet old pedaled rides. Whether your thing is something suitable for touring the streets of Amsterdam, or something hip/retro for a summer night out on the town, Ichi is there for you. Feel the need to build it yourself? Ichi's stock of vintage bike frames may be inspiration for your next great DIY project. NOT SO ICHI-BAN MAINTENANCE SERVICES Excited about what I was seeing on the showroom floor and the opportunity to support a fresh local business, I brought in my commuter hybrid and old-school touring bike for some basic work. The commuter was in for a simple dual-function pedal purchase and switch out. The tour bike was in for dusting, chain and derailleur de- and re-greasing, and all the usual tuneup services. While there were some awkward moments around when my wheels could be picked up and what the cost would be assuming no additional parts, the commuter was taken care of with no issues. I discovered that the tour bike, on the other hand, was returned to me with flat tires, all the original dust and grease, and no evidence that it was touched at all save for the commuter's old pedals having been added (as requested). I called Ichi to express my concern for having paid for services not rendered. I was told that the bike's chain was a wreck, the gears needed to be scrapped, amongst other issues. There was not an adequate response to my inquiry about how this was determined with no apparent effort to perform the tuneup, why I wasn't notified that the bike was not fit to service until I called the shop out, or why I was charged for a tuneup that was not received. After additional discussion, Ichi Bike did (to their credit) offer to make the situation right, if I was willing to bring the bike back in. I had taken the bikes to Ichi because I wanted to support a promising new local business who offered a service that I simply didn't have the time to do myself. While the offer was appreciated, it really proved to be too little too late. I don't really know what happened in the Ichi Bike shop when this bike was in - and I've not received any follow up communication from them regarding my complaint or their offer to mend our relationship - but the experience has left me with little trust for this aspect of the business. EPILOGUE Less than $20 in cleaners/lubricants and 30 minutes of my time later the tour bike looks great, and the chain and gears are spinning away with that sweet slinky-smooth mechanical purr that is at the heart of my love for cycling. No chain replacement required, no gear repairs needed, just a simple tuneup leading to biking bliss. read more

I got there right at opening time on a Sunday. I was greeted right away by Zack. I have an older Schwinn messenger bike that needed a new tire and tube, and was expecting to have to leave it there. But he found me a tire, mounted the bike and did the work on the spot. He also gave me helpful tips on bike maintenance. I really appreciated his friendly, helpful manner! The price of the repair was reasonable too. I recommend this place for bike repairs and advice for sure! read more

Well the sun is out, so what's a guy to do but go for a spin on his bike! Naturally the back tire blows, so we walk to Ichi Bike to drop it off not expecting them to fix it right then and there! But Dan the owner said he could fix it up quick for us! He dug my wife's French bike from the early 2000's, he was impressed. He even called her the, "Original Hipster." but she told him she was maybe getting tired of the fixed gear so he told her some things she could do to it, to make it a little safer for her in the city and then he put her on this beautiful bike and me on a roadster to try out while he fixed the bike. We cruised down to the river and back, and the bikes were awesome! I wanted to take one home.. That is until he put us on one of the electric bikes he had on hand! It was like nothing I had ever experienced, once I started peddling the bike takes off with electric power! This was amazing and fun, and as a family with only one car this could be an amazing investment, with no carbon footprint! I loved it! After he fixed up my bike, Dan also showed us a few bikes he had made! They were really cool and actually re-used old skate boards as the seats! Totally awesome! If your bike person, or just want to see and ride something you have never seen before Ichi Bike is the spot! I look forward to going back soon and taking another spin or two! I'm fairly new to the cycling scene, but I have to say I love Ichi Bike. Dan and the people he employs are always so welcoming and awesome to "talk shop" with. He does a lot of refurbishing of old bikes, has a great selection of new bikes, and always has a bunch of other fun options to think about as well. He sold me my first commuter bike last summer, a Torker Mixtie, and I still love riding it. I've upgraded since then, but whenever I'm having bike issues, or just need a genuine hug, Ichi Bike makes the cut. He has a lot of great original accessories, and will make suggestions based on your riding style for new fun things. I got a bike in a box from my ex. Knowing nothing about bikes but being mechanically inclined I figured I could put it back together. After 3 to 4 hours and a lot of sweat I just could not get one peddle on. Called her and found out that peddle is reverse threaded. Embarrassed, I finally got it started but didn't notice it was crooked and cross threaded. Took it to Itchy and was told the crank was irreparable and would have to wait a couple hours for someone else to get back and give me an estimate. That was Saturday. This morning I was told it was a fancy crank somewhere between 50 and 100 dollars to replace. I said I would call back. Deciding to take it elsewhere I called to see if I could pick it up right then. They convinced me the had a crank and it would only be 20 dollars and to come right in. Got there and they had not looked at it yet. BUT ten minutes later it was fixed.. They re-threaded the old crank and it worked just fine. They also flipped the handle bars which I had gotten backwards. Bottom line - 20 bucks. Even with all the confusion I ended up completely satisfied. read more

A fun place to visit, and if you're into the old classics, a must see even if you are traveling through town. The showroom is like an old bike shop museum.. the kind of place you don't see much of on the east coast. I used to drive for a living and whenever I was near Des Moines for a few days once I found out about the place on RRB's bulletin board, I made it a point to stop in. I found some great patina'd wheels for my old junkers , and Dan was very reasonable on it..(Pretty common old stuff) Good guy, knowledgeable, and friendly. I couldn't afford one of his custom bikes or an electric but they were pretty cool! I'll miss those visits now I'm off the road. read more

Wow! I took my kid in to get a new seat for his bike. The guys was super engaging with my son and was really nice. They had custom seats that were really unique. They also had bikes that were out of this world. Stuff that I had never seen before. 100% custom. I brought my bike back a few days later and they fixed it up on the spot. Reasonable prices. The story is worth a visit even if you don't need anything because the bikes are so cool. read more
