This was a really neat Bass Pro Shop! They have the cozy feeling living room setting when you walk in, a huge fish tank (of course!), and a very large selection of fishing lures/equipment! Also, their clothing section is rather large and had all the great prices I usually see at my local Cabela's! On top of that, they have a restaurant and bowling alley! *BUYER BEWARE* I purchased a firearm that was defective. Bass Pro Shops does not inspect firearms for their customers prior to releasing them. I guess you would need to bring a gunsmith with you to make sure you are receiving a safe firearm? They refused to exchange or give a refund for the defective firearm. Bought a $10k new tracker ATV. Bass Pro installed Handle bar heater grip kit as part of "plow package" install. Got it home and grips don't heat. Took it in for WARRANTY repair. Was told someone unplugged grip and warranty was refused. Yelled at idiot service manager until invoice was canceled. grips worked when I picked up ATV. Went to plow snow and grips don't work! We have been out here numerous times over the years. The store is rather large. It has a ton of options for outdoor activities. We come her on occasion to look at stuff for fishing. They do have a giant fish tank to entertain the kids of all ages. They get Santa and the Easter bunny for those times of year. There are shoe sales some times. Occasionally we can find a good clothing item on sale. There is an attached bowling alley which we have never had the pleasure to be able to explore. Today we were in store to make a bigger purchase. It required special handling and it was one of those things that you needed to be at the special counter for. Dennis was the gentleman behind this counter. He was super helpful. We really appreciated his patience with us as my husband talked out the details with him. It was close to closing time and he did a great job getting everything closed up as we finished up our purchase. I rate the help we got as a 5 today. I know its a chain store and sometimes the prices are a little higher than one would like. But as many times as we have been there over the years we have seem to luck out and had pretty good customer service. read more

Always clean and well organized. Hunting and fishing license and tags sold at the very front registers as you enter. This place is gorgeous. Big game, wild cats, fowl and fish on display. Wonderful large aquarium tank with huge fish. Candy shop, jewelry counter, shoes, boots, fishing gear, hunting gear, women's apparel....you will want not for your outdoor adventures here! Bows. We HAVE to chat about bows. They have a shooting range where you can set your bow, give your kids a chance to shoot, sight in your bow, your draw etc...very exciting stuff folks. For me. Need a smoker? They got 'em. Recliner in camo? Find it here! Candles? Handbags? Hats? Sweaters, t-shirts, jeans, muck boots, fishing line abs fudge? All right there at the BassPro. Well this place is massive.. Now I'm not a hunter, or a fisherman, heck I have hardly camped outside more than 5 times in the past 20 years.. In fact the Lemonheads song... "Lied About Being The Outdoor Type." might actually be about me! But hey I have been to this store a few times and it's so much more than an outdoors man's paradise. They have lots of stuff for kids, or if you are look for presents for someone who might be different than you! The store is super clean and they have really fun family events! Like yesterday the store had trick or treating for kids, and you could even get a nice professionally shot photo with the Peanuts gang for free or a package of photos for 5 bucks! That is so cheap and a no brainer! It was fun. I made the mistake of telling my son we could do the bowling.. Man that was a bit expensive for one child to bowl. I wanted to rent a lane for like 15 minutes but the minimum was a half hour and it ended up being 19 bucks ouch.. Oh well he had fun.. but the lanes seemed to be malfunctioning a bit.. but no biggie.. I got a couple brews and a lemonade for pretty cheap so that made up for the cost of bowling! Also the game run is intense and pretty awesome. We scored like 700 tickets in about a half hours time so we had a great time and it was super fun.. This store has something for everyone even if you are not into being outdoors in a fishing hut or something! read more

I was shopping for a high end, Saint Croix fishing rod. I went out of my way to come to bass pro, thinking they would have a large selection of quality rods. They did not have anything above 2 similar styles in the mid range Avid line the shelf was almost completely from the basic Premier line of rods or similar. Two other much smaller shops in the Des Moines area had everything that this store had plus the better St. Croix rods. As I looked around almost every fishing rod is Bass Pro brand. If you are looking for a high end, fishing rod, please do not go out of your way your way to explore Bass Pro. You will most likely be very disappointed. On the positive side, the staff is kind and the environment is beautiful. If you want atmosphere, it's a great place. The aquarium is lots of fun for kids and adults. However, if you want substance, for instance, a high quality fishing rod, you are mote likely to find it someplace else. read more

This is my first visit to Bass Pro Shops. Not into boats or hunting but have an interest with obtaining ammo and looking at outdoor wear. There was hardly any ammo available on the shelves but plenty of outer wear for men , women, and children. Staff is friendly and the store offers outdoor food, snacks, and pet products. This location is unique because it is connected to Uncle Buck's Fishbowl and Grill. An arcade bowling facility with a full fledged restaurant connected to this store. Prices weren't outrageous but no sales on what I was looking for. The waterfall display is impressive in the fishing section and the offerings were impressive. A must stop if you have children and are an avid outdoors person. read more

It was my first time in a Bass Pro Shop. They have country music blaring, a check-in station for your​ sidearm, dead stuff on the wall and posters about hunting, God, America and patriotism everywhere. You'd think this would be a place to find plenty of stuff made in America, right? Nope. It's an entire store full of goods made in every Asian country you can think of. I was a little freaked out by the number of customers with mullets and wife-beater shirts and a little bothered that nothing seemed to be American made but I did like the store and will stop at other locations in the future. read more

It was kind of a dreary overcast day yesterday, so my parents and I decided to go on a road trip to Des Moines. My Dad loves cars and wanted to test the ride in my rental. He also was curious about the new Bass Pro Shops complex in Altoona. It started to rain heavily on the way down and when we arrived, I think half of Des Moines was inside. This place is huge (3.5 football fields) and is similar to the Cabella's model, except there's more entertainment offered. I particularly enjoyed the huge aquarium in back, a furniture area that featured camouflaged upholstery, and the restaurant that included a cool central bar and bowling lanes on both sides. The store also has a huge boat section (including parts and service), any hunting rifle or personal firearm you might want, lots of fishing and camping gear, and all sorts of outdoor clothing. And as I looked around, I thought that their prices were pretty reasonable. I was also reminded of Gayle as the house brand is Red Head and I told her later that she would look great in camouflage. We ended up cutting our visit a bit short as it was bumper car crowded and after awhile, this place offered just too much stimulation and everyone looking the same. However, I would gladly come here again for not only the shopping, but for the entertainment. Besides the crowds, my only caution is that the directions getting in and out of this place could use some improvement. read more

We had a fun time bowling. We ordered food which was good, nothing out of the ordinary. The check in process was not smooth and we had to wait an hour to get a lane. I did not realize that and we visited the shop before trying to check in. We could not purchase and use an additional Groupon because they have a waiting period of at least 24 after purchase before you can use the groupon. Prices without a groupon are outrageous. Overall it was a nice way to spend a snowy afternoon. read more

This place is simply HUGE (and feels like it was designed more for tourism than for sporting folks). I was in Des Moines on business and stopped by hoping to pick up a new lure that I couldn't find locally. No dice on the lure, but I did manage walk around in the place for more than two hours without getting bored. There is a huge open-top wall aquarium filled with most of the fish you are apt to catch (or hope to catch) in the area. If you look up, there appear to be beams with earth somehow attached to them -- there are roots for plants hanging from the bottom of the dirt -- and all types of various stuffed critters displayed on top. There is an arcade where you can try your luck at shooting, and another arcade-type area that seems to be devoted to NASCAR and other racing games. For those who aren't interested in outdoor sports, there is a wide selection of clothing (men, women and children) in several name brands like Columbia. The store sells a wide variety of shoes as well, although I thought the prices were above average for those. There is a home decor section where you can purchase your very own catfish mailbox. (I kid you not! Check the photos.) And there are various games and novelties. What stood out to me most is all of the product that has the Bass Pro Shops logo -- cups, shirts, magnets, hats, etc. Seeing all of that sort of had me feeling like I was walking around some tourist stop on the Interstate. That feeling combined with the fact that the staff was less than attentive -- I stood at the counter in the fishing department while two younger sales clerks finished their discussion on where they were partying after work -- is what gave the shop four stars instead of five. It was nice to visit, and a good place to kill some time. Even if I lived close by, however, I don't think it would end up being one of my regular haunts. Since I didn't visit the attached restaurant, I'll leave that review for someone who did. read more

Sweet three month old baby Jesus, this place is overwhelmingly, aggressively American. All it needs is it's own McDonalds, and people might never leave. Like hunting? Fishing? Camping, canoeing or hiking? Just love camo? Then Bass Pro Shop is your god-damned, nature loving golden idol. Fishing rods are stacked like Dutch tulips in the field and are twice as plentiful. Need a boat? There's a whole boat thing, right over there! There's even a giant waterfall and tank full of fish that you can...I don't know. Pet, maybe? There's a sleeping bag section, arranged by suitable temperature. It goes from a low of -40F to +55. What kind of sleeping bag is only good for tempratures down to a brisk spring day? Anyway, BPS has em. Probably on sale. There's also an arcade section, full of a variety of ways to pretend to shoot things. Most of them were broken today, but I maybe they'll work when you get here? Oh, and there's a bowling alley. IN THE STORE. It's called "The Fish Bowl," which is clever. You guys, there are SO MANY DUCKS on the ceiling! There are stuffed animals or all variety, actually. Just laying around the place. Are they fake? Did Bass Pro Shop shoot them? These are not questions you will have answered. But the super friendly staff will answer just about any other question you have, as well as six or eight you never thought of. If you enjoy anything nature related at all and are, for some stupid reason, not afraid of bears, this place has everything you need. Strike that, they also sell guns, so your totally sensible fear of bears is also catered to, along with your need for waders, or a welcome mat that says "protected by Armed Redneck Security" or maybe just a folksy, decorative pillow for your log cabin. Which you can also probably buy here somewhere. read more

Love Bass Pro Shops and this is an awesome location for the outdoor enthusiast!! The staff is friendly and always willing to answer any questions. The store is clean and well maintained, with things organized do they they are easy to find. It also helps that they have large signs stating what area you are in. And the decor is amazing. Scenes of animals and fish everywhere you look. They also have an awesome aquarium in the center of the store fed by a waterfall. Prices are competitive with other hunting, fishing, and outdoor stores. Their gun selection isn't very broad and it didn't look like they sold used fire arms. But they do offer concealed carry classes. They have an amazing selection indoors of boats and ATV/UTV's. Overall a great place to spend a few hours. read more

It's about expectations it's a Bass pro shop and they're very similar all over the country. It's got a huge selection of a wide variety of sports-related, outdoor activity, Hunter focused, goods and services. I was looking some water bladders and was able to find some nice choices. They have quite a selection of GPS devices as well and the people that understand them and what they do. Same thing in their firearm section and the same thing in their backpacking section Sometimes when you go into a big box store you can't find people that know what they're talking about but my experience was very positive at this place. you just have to remember it's a huge place with a large parking area and for someone who doesn't like that atmosphere it won't meet your needs but if you're looking for some special goods related to sports or other outdoor activities I'm sure you'll get the help that you need to find what you're looking for. read more

I've never experienced having staff actually laugh at me for asking if they stock something. I asked a lady who was stocking clothing onto racks in the men's section if they carried merino wool t shirts or merino wool undershirts, she looked at me and abruptly said NO! Then went back to stocking. I kinda thought that was an odd way to reply without asking if I meant underlayers or base layers, just a solid NO! I started wandering looking for the base layer/under layer type clothing and I over hear that same lady telling another staff member "..asked for wool t shirt!" The other lady replied "wool t shirt?? Really?!" And the original lady says "yeah can you believe that ??" And they start laughing like I'M the dummy. I know wool t shirts exist because I'm wearing one right now. I know outdoor stores stock them because I've seen them, I just couldn't find them there. These two ladies were at least 50 yrs old, so it's not like I'm asking a completely inexperienced person a very technical question. But I decided I wouldn't continue shopping in a place where 1. The employees don't know what outdoor performance wear exists. 2. They don't know they actually have it in the store. 3. They make fun of customers for asking about clothing items Smartwool Makes T shirts From Merino Wool. And Altoona Bass Pro probably carries them in some section I couldn't find. I now own three that I bought from somewhere else because I refuse to shop in a store where the staff openly laughs at customers for asking questions. It ruined whatever I had started thinking of that particular store and from that point on I became disappointed and just left, spending my money somewhere else where they don't laugh at you for asking if they carry an item. This place rocks! The biggest outdoor apparel store that I've EVER been to. I felt like I was at the Natural History Museum with all the taxidermied animals here. VERY COOL. They even have a HUGE aquarium with live fish swimming in it with feeding times (3pm?) for shoppers to view and enjoy. There is also a sweet section that sells fudge and honey roasted nuts. They also serve hot chocolate too! We tried the honey roasted nuts and fudge. YUM!!!! This store mostly sells outdoor/sports apparel and I guarantee you will find what you are looking for here! They have video games and TV games and shooting games for the kids. During the holiday season they even have Santa Claus to take pictures with! Located here is also a bowling alley and billiards area called Uncle Bucks Fish Bowl and Grill. Super fun times!! read more

Bass Pro shop is awesome! I also enjoy going to outdoor stores like this and Sportsman Warehouse. Bass Pro Shop has an amazing interior decor with a waterfall in the center of the building. The decor itself is worth the visit here. The store itself is very big and divided into different categories for your needs. There are staff members everywhere to assist you with your shopping. There are many shoppers here, but you never feel crowded because the area is so large. read more

Pretty decent Bass Pro Shop. Not the gigantic one in Springfield but it serves its purpose. Nice tanks and fishes swimming around. Parking lot is always busy and full. Nice touch with outside tables serving kettle popcorn. I got a hat here on clearance which was nice. Probably will hunt online until I stop here. Prices are a bit high. If you aren't shopping high end like boats, fishing rods, then you might want to check out a local sporting goods store. read more

Shady staff especially at the Boat sale area. They don't have any customers yet don't ask if you need help either. It's like they take a look at us and think we can't buy a boat so why bother. This is how a business losses sales. If I come in to buy a boat and nobody even takes a friendly look at me to say hi at the least why would I invest in a business like that? Nope. We wandered the fishing area and still nobody greeted us. The workers just focus on their stocking task rather than stopping to say hi or ask if we need help. My husband and I go on a mid week date every week, we had a blast at the fish bowl!, We shared the best bbq chicken nachos! Very disappointed. The online store site said order before 4 PM and pick up the same day. Sounds easy, So I ordered $26 worth of fishing gear and planned on picking it up before the 8PM closing time. Bass Pro sends out an email at 3:55 saying we are processing the order but don't come to the store till we confirm the order is filled. Since I am an hour away we headed that way thinking surely if we arrive about 30 minutes before closing the order will be filled. Wrong! The person at the customer service desk. tried a couple of things but finally admitted there was nothing they can do. OK. Surely same day pickup at the store means someone goes back and takes 4 small items off the rack! Nope. So I call the number on the email that says I can cancel the order if I need to. Wrong again. That person had about 10 excuses for why my order wasn't.t filled, Even said you have to order by 2 PM on Sunday to get it same day. It's Saturday and drove an hour both ways just to get pissed off. The customer service lady on the phone finally offered to send a coupon for free shipping on my order but I still have to go thru a process to refuse this same day order because I do not intend to drive another 2 hours lot pick up $26 worth of items tomorrow. I'd rather be fishing. By the way I did pass a Sportsmans Warehouse and a Fleet Farm store on the way so I was able to pick up what I needed at the Fleet Farm store. Moral of the story-Don't believe everything that's promised online because chances are it ain't gonna happen. read more

I am extremely upset! My mother fell on the uneven sidewalk outside of Bass Pro Shop in Altoona, IA. They are refusing to pay for her to see a doctor. They were rude to her. She had to ask REPEATEDLY for an ice pack and some kind of first aid. She hurt her hand and knee. The manager grudgingly filled out an incident report. My sister and I have called both the store location and their corporate office. We got ahold of a lady from Risk Management. Their insurance is liability only. Absolutely terrible gun counter customer service. Gave single word answers to several questions and two workers continued their personal conversation between questions. "Best" part was the eye roll at one particular question. If you're not interested in selling firearms then maybe don't work at a place that sells firearms. I will never attempt to purchase a firearm from any Bass Pro location again, their customer service is atrocious and their prices are at or even above, significantly, MSRP. Sportsman's Warehouse is only a few minutes away, always has friendly customer service that goes far above what is necessary, and has consistently lower prices on firearms. They also offer a veteran's discount and make every effort to ensure it is applied. I have no idea if Bass Pro offers a veteran's discount, as their customer service isn't interested in actually assisting customers. Save yourself the irritation, the money, and the time and don't bother with Bass Pro if you don't have to. Sportsman's Warehouse in Ankeny is superior in every way. read more

This place is a disgrace to all gun stores. Bought a gun and asked for advice....well let's just say they need to really work on product knowledge. And no returns even if the gun has not been shot. Love spending $550 on a gun that a guy tells me is best for what I want. The guy don't know a thing about it. Now I have wasted money on something I don't need.
