Always amazing service and wonderful selection of sporting gear for every endeavor. The high-quality equipment does not come cheap however. Check options at the clearance racks and you can find some deals. Interesting points program that you can utilize to save as well. This is definitely a location to find sporting equipment that you will not find in other retail settings. read more

We want to say thank you to two super Heroes at your Des Moines REI store. Ben and Sam in the bicycle section . My wife is currently doing Ragbri which is the largest ride across Iowa or any other state I think. She was riding in Stage 3 or a 6 stage all week ride and she had a major de-railer on her bike break. She has a bike from REI she purchased years ago and loves it but she was able to get a hold of the REI in Des moines and they said bring it in. So I drove here 1 1/2 hours from the road ride she was in and Ben and Sam at the store rocked it!!!! They fixed her bike and got her back up going in an hour and she is now back on the road in Stage 4 today. We cannot thank you enough, REI and especially two heroes Ben and Sam. What service and kindness cannot say enough. Hope this gets to them, their store manager and the CEO of REI so you all know how great you folks are!! God Bless and Ride on!!!!! This West Des Moines REI is probably the only one in Iowa. I stopped in to look at their luggage selection, before making a possible online REI purchase when the next member sale comes around. The store is sizable enough, with lots of familiar sections and selections that I've come to expect in other REI stores. Store staff were friendly and very helpful. I'm sure I'll stop by again during one of my fairly frequent Iowa trips. read more

REI's reputation as a provider of quality outdoor gear and good corporate citizen has long since been established. What makes this REI special - beside being, at long last, located in West Des Moines - is the enthusiastic and passionate staff the REI has brought onboard. Not just knowledgeable employees, but experienced participants in the activities themselves, the staff at this location can both point you to the right equipment for your endeavor, but provide recommendations on its use, and suggestions on where you might want to use it. If you're a seasoned hiker, kayaker, biker, climber, etc., you already know what REI has to offer. If you're just getting started, REI should be one of your first visits. read more

REI - Grand opening day. The line is all the way around the back of the building. Welcome to Des Moines, REI. - Sports Wear Near Me - West Des Moines, Iowa

This is a smaller REI store, so it unfortunately doesn't have the selection that larger ones do, but for what it lacks in inventory it makes up for it with a knowledgeable and attentive staff. I've been a member for almost 25 years, and spent a lot of time in the backcountry and on the water over the years, it's nice to bring up something you are trying to accomplish and get a third party view and option to solve that problem. I wish I could remember the cashiers name, but it was cool to get asked where I was heading and sharing trail experiences and recommendations. Great store and great people, I couldn't recommend them more. read more

Coming down the mountain is always so much faster then going up! And if you are going to be going up, you might have to go up to the ATM and get some money, cause if you want to be stocked up on the things that make you look good while you go up the mountain you are going to have to pay the price! REI is nice, and good layout, the staff was also very helpful! But man these prices are a little out of my league, then again Im not a pro climber or you won't see me hopping over ponds anytime soon. In fact I kinda thrive on alcohol and concrete so I knew I was probably not going to be purchasing anything here, but it is a cool store and If I got my butt out to be an outdoors man more I might just do a little more shopping here! Cause it's nice and the stuff is nice too! read more

I was looking for a pair of hiking/snow boots and immediately Teresa helped me find the right ones. I've been going here for my outdoor needs and the staff is amazing. I had an awesome conversation about photography with Ryan and Teresa. You can tell that the staff have a huge passion for what they do. The quality of the products are great. Thank you REI in West Des Moines. I love your store and I will always come back! read more

Oh how long I have waited to have a REI close to me again! I loved being close to one when living in the Atlanta area and it was my go to place for all things outdoors. So glad to have one here in the Des Moines area now. I love the wood beams on the outside of the store. Makes it look a bit more rustic and outdoorsy. When entering, I've been greeted by a friendly sales associate and always asked if I need help finding what I'm looking for. The store is of good size and had a lot to offer. From clothing and shoes to bikes, tents, backpacks, and more! The first time I went in was to get a handheld, portable bike pump. They had quite a few and I had looked online first. All of the options had great reviews online. I always appreciate knowing I'll get high quality products here. I was between two and a sales associate helped me narrow it down. The second trip was for a bike helmet for our two year old. She has a small head and they actually had helmets that fit her and in various colors. Another win for them! My third trip was to get shoes for my husband. We are both lovers of Keens and they carry them (my very first pair of Keen hiking boots came from a REI). The lady helping us in shoes was very nice and knew her stuff too. REI didn't mind our daughter wandering around the store and checking out the tent they had set up with cots at the entrance. It obviously helps with sales because they kept telling me she needs a tent. Haha! I recommend getting their rewards program. I've been a member for 10 years and you only pay the fee the first time and it's good for life. Well worth it when you're buying quality items and getting some money back. We will return to REI again and again! read more

Garth and crew showed me love and helped out with my shopping experience knowledgeable About the equipment and was understanding and patient

Stopped in at REI while we were out running errands as I have always been curious about their products. They are a bit pricey but they have quality products and their prices are comparable of Scheels and Bass Pro. The staff was phenomenal! We inquired about mending a broken tent pole, and unlike multiple other stores, we were shown an inexpensive patch/splint instead of having to pay quite a bit for a brand new pole! Their return policy is great! And if you are an avid adventurer, I recommend their loyalty program! It's $20 but it can save you in the long run if you are going to purchase quite a few things. As an added bonus, they give back a percent of your purchase to local wildlife and recreation areas! They even have a bike repair shop in store as well! One thing I wish, is that there was more outdoor stuff and less clothing! read more

For anyone who has been to other REI stores you will realize how embarrassing this store is. This location is primarily just a clothing store with about 70% of the store being clothes and shoes. Outside of clothes they have some bikes and camping stuff and that's it. They carry no skiing, kayaking, or much of anything else. It's really to bad because most REI stores are awesome for outdoor enthusiasts but this one seems to primarily just care about clothing sales. If you're looking to be fashionable while outside then this may be the store for you. If you're looking for equipment for your active lifestyle try one of REIs other stores. read more

Oh my god, Des Moines finally got a real outdoors store. Well, this is certainly huge but no Bloomington-MN store. Still, it's nice to see a new store and find a bunch of stuff overpriced and probably use like once. Well, I scoped out the aisles and found a few interesting things. It is also nice there is an equipment rental area. Anyways, it was fun to see a new REI store in this area where I lived before moving to the Twin Cities. read more

Be wary! The cashier named Jared was going on & on about the benefits of a membership, while conveniently not mentioning the $20 charge to sign up. This is misleading. By the time I found out, the deed was already done. I would not have signed up for a membership had I known about the charge. read more

Probably the best store in the galaxy. And it's a consumer co-op!! They pay back their profits to their members [optional $20 lifetime fee (do it!!!)]. The staff is insanely friendly and genuinely care about inspiring you to lead a more adventurous life. Some of their stuff is expensive, but their guarantee is amazing and the quality of their selection is usually worth the investment. Take a class, go to one of their garage sales, help with trail cleanups and volunteer projects, maybe buy some gear when you need it. Truly a noble, ethical, and empathetic company with tons of history that is definitely worth my time and dollar... read more

As a REI member for many years, it is our go to place for anything outdoor. While traveling back home from our Colorado ski trip, we experienced some major unexpected damage to our 12 year old roof box. We were excited to find West Des Moines had a REI store. Once there, Alex, our sales associate, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable in helping us replace our roof box on the spot. With our skis safely stored in the new roof box,we were back on the road in less than 45 min. Alex definitely went the extra mile for us. Thank you REI / Alex read more

If you love the outdoors you know of REI. Outdoor recreation equipment is not for the faint of heart or anyone on a budget however. There are many things here on my wishlist. Virtually the entire store. They have all the popular outdoor brands and some innovative gear branded for them, some exclusively. The down side is they rarely seem to have my size, for the record, I am tall and freakishly misshapened according to my retail searches. Although, it is possible that they seem to cater to the sizes of smaller people hell bent on downing kale at every meal. I can rarely find my size in any of the stores and even online. The kids selections are limited too but that probably comes with the idea, most do not spend quality money on children's items they will quickly outgrow which is an industry-wide thing of no fault to the retail side of things, I have come to realize. Clothing aside, they have a great selection of gear for hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, climbing, and any other 'ing I may have missed. I typically visit one every time I am near and typically buy something I might need eventually. What I do like about the stores are that some have enthusiasts who also can point you to some of the best outdoor recreational opportunities in the area, at times provide group trips and rental equipment. Overall, if you need it they probably have it. If they don't have it, you might not need it. read more
