Crazy massive mix of three superstores combined for an inventory extravaganza to overwhelm! Hunting, clothing, indoor furnishings, toys, games, grilling, travel, hiking, and more all thrown together in a surprisingly well organized assemblage of popular brands, high end stuffs the usual sporting goods spot doesn't host, and eye candy all over - my first time to this Iowa palace didn't fail to wow and leave me entirely unable to pick up anything for myself. However my buddy bagged a decent deal of wood grill chips! Weird tho that the checkout had to scan the bar code which was hidden under tape, not a speedy route for running the Christmas crowd in and out. We normally shop at the Lincoln, NE Scheels and have nothing but outstanding service. I expected the same from this location. We tried exchanging a pair of $160 On Clouds that my daughter wore a handful of times and they got a hole in the toe area. The lady working at the customer service desk would not even look at the shoes and told us that they served their purpose. I told her that the Lincoln store told me that if anything like that happens, we can exchange the shoes no problem. She rolled her eyes at me and was VERY rude. I exchanged the shoes at the Lincoln NE store with no problem on our way home the same days. Will never return to Scheels in Des Moines/Jordan Creek! read more

I do not have these where I am from, but every time I am in the area I am always sure to drop in here. It is literally my favorite sporting goods store. They have some amazing deals/sales on clothes every time I have been in and it is actually quality items. It seems like most stores put products on the sales rack that are either low quality, odd sizes, or odd colors/designs, but that is not the case here. Additionally, they have a large selection of quality firearms, which can be hard to find these days. They have both long guns and pistols. Plentiful amounts of ammunition for those in need as well. The customer service is beyond that of a normal business. They sincerely greet you when you walk in and actually say hello and ask if you need any assistance as you walk throughout the store. I will never come here to shop again! To all my Latino and African American Scheels shoppers I would think twice before coming in here. We were shopping today, my partner and his buddy were looking at the guns due to deer season approaching. Everyone knows not to point the guns at other people, it is okay to point in the air and to the ground, which they did so, as well as other customers. A west Des Moines police officer came up to them and told them they needed to leave that if they come back they will be arrested. Rightfully so, my partner and his buddy were extremely upset as they were the only people of color who were asked to leave when others were doing the EXACT SAME-THING! When my partner called to tell me they were escorted out I was extremely upset as this has never happened to us, especially with our baby. I immediately called Scheels and spoke with the manager, Jason. I explained to him the situation and questioned why my partner and his friend were told to leave when others of color were not? I asked him to look at the cameras and see for himself, his exact words were " I have to side with what the cop is telling me." This is disgusting on so many levels to not even take 10 mins out of your day to get the proof you need? So all Latinos and African Americans please be aware of how this store truly is. read more

I drive in a near blizzard (3/5) to exchange it or get store credit for a better functioning coat. After waiting for like 10 minutes they say they can give me 100+ of credit for this 550+ jacket. never be dissatisfied their quote is. ha. Never shopping here, and definitely not giving a gift from here. now I have to go through the or warranty process which will take time and leave me without a jacket. Also they no longer have the black color I like so I am left getting a lower value coat from their selection if able therefore scheels is eating some of the original money. They had many of the same model and size to just switch it out but they didn't. The prices are pretty average, they don't seem expensive or cheap. I'm very disappointed with the Scheel's execution of their own price match policy. I was in the Jordan Creek Mall store yesterday ready to buy a Schwinn IC4 exercise bike. Sheel's sales price $799, Amazon price $499. I confirmed with the Sales Associate that Scheel's will match Amazon. Upon showing him the Amazon website, he took it to his manager for approval. The Associate came back with an offer to sell for $649. I responded "no thanks". Then he said they would match $499 if I wanted them to, but they would be losing money on the sale. Huh? I should pay $150 more than the Amazon price so Scheel's doesn't take a loss? I left the store without making the purchase, as it seemed to be a great inconvenience for Scheel's to honor their own published policy. That's pretty short-term thinking on the manager's part. Scheel's may have avoided losing money on the sale, but the loss of a customer's good will is likely far more costly. read more

Okay. I was very impressed with the depth of this store. I just thought it was like every typical sporting goods store in California, but no way! This place is way cooler! Of course, a lot of it caters to the Iowan folk, as it should, but they sell way more than one would think. They have a fudge room! This place makes fresh batches everyday & they even offer samples! I tried the raspberry cheesecake & I have to say it was a little sweet but it was softer than most fudge I've tasted. They were supposedly still good within 3 weeks in room temperature. Good for traveling & taking home to family! They also had a Christmas room! It was filled with pretty ornaments & scented candles. Maybe not a good place for a small child but it was pretty awesome to see what Christmas should look like on the inside of someone's house. They had an area for hunting! I mean wow. They had all different types of crossbows for any skill level & age. I was so interested to see how much they weighed. I felt like the men's crossbows were too heavy for me, but I was able to try a female one that was perfect. I was rather impressed by all of the stuff that they had. Over the weekend we visited this location, my child got injured on their property and they blew it off. They had NO CONCERNS about the child. My child received several stitches and a scare that will now be stuck right on their forehead for the rest of their life! My child had a bunch of blood pouring out and a huge gash. The last few experiences at this store have been disappointing to say the least. Every time I've been here with my partner we are always being followed around the store in the most obvious manner. I wasn't going to post anything but I see another POC was profiled as well so now I know this store has a problem for sure. As I walked the few feet to the bicycles, a gentleman on a work phone was smiling and walking my way. His name was Zac Angus. (I am totally clueless about bicycles). He took his time explaining the different bikes to me and helping pick out the right size bike for me. He answered all my questions (no matter how dumb the questions were). I went here right after getting into a major complication trying to get a shotgun from Super Wal-mart in Ankeny. They don't know gun laws and would not sell me a shotgun without having me get a new drivers license with my new address. This is wrong, because I supplemented my ID with 2 other forms of govt ID proving where I live. They refused my sale because they don't know gun laws. Scheels, on the other hand, knows gun laws. One of my first visits into Scheels, being new to the area. I must say, not impressed. Horrible customer service in fishing dept from the older "10 year employee." Doesn't acknowledge you if you are under the age of 50 even once at the front counter. Supervisor Trevor (I think) was great as well as Luke. Overall compared to other sporting good stores Scheels is average. Decent selection, staff is friendly and helpful and usually very knowledgable ! Gun department staff was great! Especially at recommending different handguns! They did keep going up higher and higher in price though from what I originally asked about which they did not have in stock. However their prices are pretty high on most everything!!! So that is one negative. Store also seemed a bit cluttered, but then again with the holiday season they are pushing products. I have purchased many items from this store. Recently I purchased an expensive rifle scope and it had a small scratch on it. I brought it back for an exchange, but they did not have it in stock. One of the managers found one at another store for me in a town I was traveling through that day. They also offered to have it mailed to their store in Des Moines to be picked up. They have a lot of college gear, winter coats (north face, columbia, etc)., snowboarding gear, hunting gear, football apparel, and some baseball apparel. Upstairs they have a sports watch section and headphones. They also have kids section, a women's/junior's clothing section, and also a separate section for women's fashion shoes/boots/and tennis shoes and men's tennis shoes/boots. Downstairs they have a small cafe where you can order coffee, and a shop upstairs that sells fudge/drinks/roasted almonds. There is also a store upstairs that sells decorative items for the home (such as quote blocks). Overall, I think Scheel's is a great place for everyone. One recommendation my S/O had was that he wished they had more hockey apparel. The staff here are also very friendly! read more

They also have a great selection of clothing for anything sports related, and tons of shoes for any occasion. If you are not in a hurry for items, its a good idea to watch the sales or clearance sections because their prices are full retail price.
