Small Pulled Chicken and hush puppies.
Jo Nell R.

I give the 3 stars for the Hushpuppies, I really enjoyed them. It was a haul for us, about 40 minutes away but we driver all over to try BBQ we haven't had before. Small place at the end of a strip mall. Lots of signs all over the walls, lots of decorations, and handmade signs. Order at the counter with menu signs posted. The guy at the counter was probably the owner, was friendly enough and answered my questions. After we ordered and sat at the 'music' table, we noticed another whole menu board on the wall to the right of the counter. Not sure how we missed it but also wasn't pointed out. I think we would have made different order choices had we known. I ordered the small pulled chicken sandwich with sauce on the side. Glad I asked, I like to dip and not have it already on the sandwich. I also got the hushpuppies and really enjoyed them. The chicken sandwich was good, the bun was soft and really made the sandwich. Overall, the place was fine. Agree with other reviewers that it could use a good cleaning. The path to the bathroom is pretty disorganized.

Went to Big Woody's BBQ on my recent trip to St. Louis because i needed to try some St. Louis ribs. Big Woody's was near my hotel, highly rated, and closed at 7pm. My rules for BBQ restaurants are as follows: 1. If you can't smell smoke, it's probably not good. 2. If they are open late they probably are not good. It's in a strip mall, and you can see the smokers are at the edge of the parking lot, just outside of the restaurant. You can also smell the smoke. The restaurant's interior can be described as kitschy American road trip, with license plates and road signs adorning the wood walls. I ordered a full rack of ribs which came with two sides. I got the bacon mac and cheese and hush puppies. Everything came on disposable plates, another good sign. The bacon mac was gooey and cheesy, with lots of bacon flavor. I especially liked the hush puppies which were crispy, lightly sweet, and not too greasy. The ribs were excellent. They were tender, peeled off the bone easily, smoky, and not covered in sauce. The rub had excellent flavor on it's own. I will definitely return if I find myself in the St. Louis area again.

Food was great. Very pleased with the portions and price. I had the brisket. It was moist and smoked well. Quant atmosphere with good food. I'll definitely be back.

I collect food and great staff!!! I recommend the brisket and their ghost pepper barbecue sauce. Can't be beat. One of my favorite places in my entire trip of St. Louis. Don't let the strip mall location for you. This place is a hidden gem.

Loads of smoky atmosphere. Fun place to eat or take it to go.

We like staying away from national chains and strip malls. When we rolled up to Big Woody's I was worried. BBQ in a strip mall? OMG. It was great. We were there at 5 pm. There were so many people standing around for take out. The place is popular. They were out of many of the sides. Disappointing, but a sign of customer love. I had a half rack of ribs with Josh puppies and smoked baked beans. My partner had the brisket with hush puppies and deep fried corn. The ribs were great with a nice balance of smoke heat and sweet but not too sweet. They offer sauce (self serve into a cup). My brother said the brisket was fantastic. We both agreed the hush puppies were unbelievably delicious. The beans were tasty. The corn on the cob was not piping hot so a bit of a disappointment. Try Big Woody's. Awesome.

The best BBQ locally in st charles! If it is always fresh, and as soon as you come within a mile, you can smell the barbecue and the wood-burning grill / smoker outside. Inside a very small and quant very intimate ambience. The staff is always incredibly friendly, and they always make your order right when you order it so it's always fresh! Honestly, I don't have one recommendation everything is delicious and I think you should just try a little bit of everything so without I will say I always recommend the platters. I never have one go to order a tend to mix it up every time I go.

First time here, just moved to the area and I consider myself a BBQ connoisseur and I gotta tell you this place is definitely on my list now! I ordered a large brisket sandwich with a side of "Hogballs". The sandwich was absolutely delicious and the hogballs were a treat, they consist of giant hushpuppies with bacon, onion, cheddar and pork inside of them, very yummy!! My wife had the pulled chicken sandwich and a side of fries. The chicken was very moist and flavorful! The fries were great also! To tell you the truth I was so hungry that I ate everything before I took a picture! We also had a chance to meet the owner, Woody, and he was very nice and helpful! This is definitely a place to come for great bbq, they have approx 10 tables inside, it's quite small, but well worth the visit!

The Hot Mess Sandwich

This is some good barbecue, I ordered the "Hot Mess" sandwich which is pulled pork piled high, topped with coleslaw an onion ring and covered in bbq sauce. I also ordered my main go to side dishes whenever I visit a barbecue joint, which is french fries and baked beans. They only offer one sauce and its a good sauce but doesn't really stand out. Their sauce delivers a mild, subtle baseline flavor. It's not over the top, it doesn't have a breakout blend of flavors but it doesn't disappoint either. The pulled pork had a mild smoky flavor, their coleslaw had a nice crunch and wasn't overly creamy, the fries were cooked perfectly and well seasoned and their baked beans were good. Woody's is a solid barbecue joint, it didn't ring the alarm on my bbq meter but is good enough for me to return and try more of their menu.

My second visit here was another solid experience. If you want to give Big Woody's five stars I won't debate it. The pulled pork had a hint of smoke and wasn't overcooked. Brisket was moist with more pronounced smoke flavor. My slaw was just bland: The chopped cabbage had little dressing, making the slaw a bit dry. It was an ample portion however. Potato salad was satisfactory. This is a small, casual place. A group of four might be unable to find a common table and any larger group certainly won't.

**disclaimer: I am visiting from California and reviewing different food spots in Missouri**…read moreWith that being said... Food: I know why this place got recognized on tv! It's really good! Fall off the bone meat, plenty of different sauces to try, fun drink options. What we ordered: Big Muddy - 10/10 had brisket and smoked sausage in it. Had to add more horseradish sauce to it but that's just my preference. Brisket Plate - 9/10 brisket was delicious but knocking off a point because the sides were...ok. Coleslaw had NO flavor just like mush and the Potato salad was nothing to write home about. Needed more flavor. Brownie pie slice: 10/10 moist and crumbly crust. I want an entire pie! Service: There was no one there when we arrived so we had no experience with any wait time. Just went right up to the front to order our meals and they chopped the meat up right in front of us, placed on a tray on top of the counter and we took it to the register to pay. Self service and self seating establishment. The lady at the register was very nice and happy. No complaints there! She was interested to know where we were visiting from and how we liked the food. Ambiance: this place looks cool! With hints of retro vibe inside! The ceiling says the name in a cool work of art. Plenty of seating inside and outside. Final review: Yes! I liked it and would return!

You order at the counter, which was easy, and then pay at the end of the line. The cashier was super helpful and offered recommendations on sauces and offered pickles or jalapeños for my To Go order. I ordered the Big Muddy sandwich which came with brisket, sausage, lettuce and pickles. It was also supposed to have horseradish and bbq sauce, but it did not. Maybe because it was To Go? The brisket was sliced right in front of me, but it was bad. It looked tender, but it was supper fatty and could handle be chewed. I spit most of it out. The problem was probably a bad cut of meat and not the smoking, but they still served it to me. The sausage was great, but only had a couple of little slices. I added some of the sweet sauce which was very good. I chose the beans for my side. Fine, but nothing special. A little dry, so I added sauce to help it go down. Then they had some local soda option, so I passed on an overpriced drink. It looks like there are more local options in the area, I would try somewhere else if ever back in this area.

I split a full rack with mom for my most recent birthday meal and I was not disappointed! Naturally, we each had plenty of leftovers. The ribs came out with that perfect dark, smoky bark that's packed with flavor. The meat underneath was oh so tender. For one side, I went with applesauce - a classic. Appropriately chilled, it was a nice, fresh component to a largely roll-me-out-the-door meal. It was topped with a very confident amount of cinnamon. Heavy-handed for my taste, but if cinnamon is your jam, you'll be thrilled. The baked beans, however, came in hot. And I don't mean temperature; I mean with a spicy surprise. The sweetness of the applesauce cut down the bite of the heat, but I longed for milk to put out the little fire on my tongue. I have a low threshold for spicy food, so you may be quite alright with it, but it was a surprise to me. Pappy's is, hands down, my go-to BBQ spot. That said, it was still disappointing because it was nowhere near the medium temperature I requested. With cuts this thick, it may be challenging to consistently hit the desired doneness, so that's something to keep in mind. On a positive note, the flavor and seasoning were great. I wasn't sure what to order, but the friendly staff recommended that I have the brisket, and I'm so glad I heeded their advice. The brisket sandwich was the most tender meat that I have ever had. I had never had brisket before having that sandwich, now my mouth waters any time I talk about this restaurant! The cole slaw that I had as a side provided the perfect crunch and balance. My mate had the pulled pork sandwich, which was also very tender. I also loved having a variety of barbecue sauces on the table and was able to try each one. It was delicious! The baked beans were tangy and sweet, and the potato salad was creamy. I didn't like the ribs, they were very dry and definitely not worth the money. The barbecue sauces are in bottles on the table; my personal favorite was the Honey Badger, sweet with a little bit of heat. I found the Coffee BBQ sauce to be the most interesting; I have never had anything like it before. The coffee notes were subtle and helped balance out the smoky flavors.
