Heavy Smoke is probably the best BBQ I've had in the STL area. They sell out of their meats by the evening time, so I'd actually recommend coming for lunch if possible. The restaurant is pretty spacious with plenty of seating. Food also comes out pretty quickly after ordering at the counter. The back wall of the restaraunt is lined with dozens of trophies and various awards received over the years - a true testament to how great this place is. My husband and I got the three meat plate and the brisket egg rolls. The standout item here was definitely the burnt ends. These aren't your typical burnt ends - these are super tender and melt in your mouth. The brisket egg rolls are unique and packed with flavor as well. I went to Heavy Smoke and was able to decide what I wanted by reading their well organized menu board while waiting. I ordered 4 rib plate with side orders of house made potato chips and baked beans with Coke to drink. After finding napkins and utensils, I found a table and placed my order number where the server could see it. The ribs had a light sauce to them and they were large end ribs. My potato chips were salted and the baked beans came with a sauce and had no visible additions to them. I found out later that other sauces and a dry rub were options that you could request, which I will explore on a future visit. It was hot outside and their AC system was struggling to work effectively, but they had ceiling fans that helped somewhat. The sides deserve their own spotlight--potato salad is my personal favorite, the baked beans and coleslaw hit all the right notes. My brother ordered the burnt ends. This was some good BBQ! My husband and I came in on a Saturday for lunch and they were busy but it was still quick. When you walk in you order at the counter and they bring your food to you. Ribs - This was the star of the meal for me. Fall of the bone, a bit of fat, smoked perfectly. I just wished I had more than 2 ribs. Potato casserole - I thought this was tasty, but I probably wouldn't get it again. I think it's a texture thing for me. Tater tots - These were really good. Fried so they were nice and crispy and seasoned well. There are also lots of different bbq sauces to try. I tried a few, but I'm not a huge fan of putting sauces on bbq. My wife and I went up due to a recommendation. It was about a 40 min drive and we were excited to try some new BBQ that came highly recommended. The place was large and spacious but also dark. The room let itself to echos of the conversations going on. I suspect if it was ever really crowded then hearing and talking across the table would be tough. We went to order... they were out of burnt tips so we both ended up choosing brisket. I also had a canned beer. What I don't understand and sort of bothers be these days is the tip screen right away. We have had no service short of ordering. What size of tip do you offer? We sat down and shorty our order came out. We had to go get our own water, silverware (plasticware wrapped in plastic), and napkins. Still unsure what the tip was for. We got all 3 sauces, had to get up and get them ourselves, and decided to do a blind taste test. Neither my wife nor I could really tell any of them apart - and one was supposedly Jalapeno! The brisket was dry and the tots were heat lamp warm - not fresh. I finished mine and she took 1/2 of her brisket home. We had to go get our own styrofoam container. So much plastic waste here.
