I was under the impression they would sell jumbo home made real beef burgers, a great variety of fries, and milkshakes. However they actually seem to specialize in home cooked meals. We decided to have burgers and fries (which we shared) and the burgers are not homemade and the fries was not many for over $2. We was seated right away and our waiter was very nice. I will go again when I'm really hungry to try their soul food and milkshakes. $9.50 for a cheeseburger and $2+ for a small fry just wasn't worth it in my opinion. A favorite place to eat for the entire family. (so a solid choice if you have a 'picky' eater in the group!) The place is clean; the service is friendly; the prices are very fair; and the food is GOOD. There are no 'bad' choices from the blue plate offerings. Everything- meats and veggies- are delicious. The fried chicken tenders are loved by the kids and the adults...whether on a salad, sandwich or plate! The chili and gumbo are very good, but I find that I frequently have to ask them to heat it up...so when you order it, make sure to mention the temperature. The desserts are always consistent and delicious. If you go at peak mealtimes, there will be a wait...but you can opt for takeout, or dine at non-peak times. Either way...I can highly recommend this as reliably good, traditional food at fair prices. read more

Big Time Diner. When I would ask what to get... the answer was the same.. They would all tell me.."Everything" I figured there must be some truth to the goodness of this place that everyone was talking about- no matter what time of day I pass the place--the parking lot is packed! So I decided to give it a shot. I walked in at about 1230. It was packed. I was on my lunch hour and was worried I was going to have to wait. Nope. Got seated right away. Now listen.. When I try something new that I have been told is good.. I go all in. I go Big Time.. Which seemed very fitting being that this was the Big Time Diner! So I ordered a cup of gumbo, a burger, some fries, and.. onion rings.. Cause a good place can be judged by the quality of their O rings. That's the truth. You know what else is the truth? This place lived up to its reputation! The food came in a very timely manner. The gumbo was scrumptious! The burger was the epitome of a diner burger, and the onion rings.. yeah buddy... They tickled my tummy in the perfect way! So.. I went back the next day. This time.. I went with the "Grilled Fish Almondine." You know what? It was fantastic! I've eaten here on multiple occasions, and if it were a shorter drive away, I would eat here even more frequently! It's a cute, kitschy, 50s-style diner, and their food is pretty traditional diner fare: poboys, burgers, salads, fried fish, hamburger steak, etc., but everything I've ordered has been great (with the exception of the apple pie, which is doughy and much too full of cinnamon.) I usually order a poboy, and all of them are great -- there's not too much breading on any of the seafood, and there's usually so much of it on the poboy that I either can't finish it or have to break it down to eat. My mom is almost fifty years old and has eaten oysters from everywhere, and she swears that the best ones are Big Time's. Service is always attentive and friendly, even when it's crowded. I'm fairly sure that we've never had to wait more than twenty minutes for a table, either. Definitely give it a go if you're in the area! read more

We were headed to another restaurant and this spot caught our eye. We made a u-turn and decided to try. The parking lot was full on a Thursday afternoon (which should be a good sign of good food). The staffed greeted us upon arrival and everyone was friendly. We were given a choice of where we would like to sit which was nice. Our server was very nice and was able to give recommendations on what menu items are the most popular. We decided to go with the Shrimp Dinner and the Chicken dinner. We choose corn, green beans, and dressing as the sides and each item was good. Overall, this restaurant scores well for collectively good service, friendly staff, and good food. Great place for southern comfort food. I ordered the vegetable plate, which was much less healthy than it initially sounded after my selections: mac and cheese, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a small salad. I also had a chocolate milkshake. The food definitely tastes like it's made in grandma's kitchen, and the milkshake was perfect and served with the shaker of ice cream it was made from on the side. We both got our leftover ice cream in to-go cups and had it for a snack the next day. The prices are pretty reasonable and the establishment is clean with nice servers. read more

Sent to Mobile,AL for a work meeting I found myself criticizing the city for their lack of food options. I'd like to apologize and say,"Damn! Big Time Diner has their food on point!" At first glance the place looks a little run down. The paint is fading, the parking lot is rough, and the seats are ripped. But hey, its a diner! My lunch group was welcomed with a friendly staff and one can feel the positive energy going throughout the diner. One gentleman walked around greeting customers and made sure everyone felt comfortable. Im assuming he is the manager. This place def. represents southern hospitality. I ordered the fried fish, mac-n-cheese, fried okra, and corn bread. The fish was crisp yet tender ,the mac n cheese had a rich flavor with a hint of cajun spices, and the corn bread was moist and i think i tasted lemon/orange zest. Last year while in Mobile, we ate at the Big Time Diner, so decided to return while on this trip to Mobile. I had the Blue Plate Special, with chicken tenders, fried okra, green beans, and a roll. The only complaint was the chicken tenders were cold. However, my sides were delicious. Also, they have great ranch dressing! I would visit again, but pick a different meat. For one, all of the servers are absolute sweethearts, and they take care of you from the minute you sit down until the minute you walk out of the door. The food is made with love. After running around garage sale-ing one saturday morning, my husband and I wanted breakfast, but we all know how easy that is to find around here, so we opted to wait till Big Time opened and have lunch. Cute 50's diner, but is starting to show it's age. We shared a fried green tomato appetizer and we both got one of the Meat & Veg combos. I believe I got the roasted beef with gravy, field peas and green beans; I think my husband got something similar. The entree was on-par with cafeteria or buffet food; just kinda blah. Totally forgettable. The FGT appetizer however, was actually pretty good; the best we had had in awhile. I can't vouch for the milk shakes that people rave about, as we are limiting our sugar intake. Service was fast and friendly enough. We were there in December and they had Christmas carol music playing, and the song kept skipping and repeating. Kind of annoying. I agree with some of the past reviewers in that this is largely on par with cafeteria food, though the options are plentiful and some authentic offerings are on hand. My experience is limited to pulled pork, roast beef, and a combination of other sides. The fried green tomato appetizer (with dressing dip) is okay. It is certainly better than some examples out there, though they weren't exactly crispy and at least a couple of them remained cold tomato inside. The battered tomatoes did satisfy a certain craving, however. I thought the greens were good, though a bit over-salted. I'm not sure if they had homemade pepper sauce on hand but I did have Tabasco. Hard for me not to enjoy these. The mashed potatoes didn't taste homemade to me, reminding me more of tasteless prison gruel. The beef I tried was better than the pork, though both were dry and off in taste. I doubt it wasn't fresh, but I had the sense at the time that it had been old or reheated. Relaxed, spacious diner atmosphere. Quite busy for a random weekday afternoon. Seems to be frequented by known locals, which is a good sign. The workers here are nice folks, though not always the most adept. The food, though, really misses the mark. read more

We came here at 1pm. Requested a table of 6 and a baby. Asked how long the wait time was and how many people were ahead of us. They said 10-15 minutes and 5 parties were ahead of us. It is now 20 minutes and they seating everyone and then three more parties who came in AFTER us as well. We're the only ones left still waiting. After 27 minutes, they sat our table down in two separate tables next to each other with two separate waiters so they were scrambling to figure out a solution. Finally they moved us into a 6 person booth. Waitress finally came to us at 1:30 to take our order. We ordered our drinks and food at the same time. This chick kept rolling her eyes up as though she was an idiot not knowing what we wanted. The busboy was really loud with clearing off other tables, causing everyone to turn in the direction of the noise. It is now 1:55 and people who were sat after us have gotten their food before us and are almost done eating their food. I would give them the benefit of the doubt since its MKL holiday but their order of priority is completely off. I haven't even gotten my food yet but this is horrible service. We have even complained to our waitress but nothing has been done and she still hasn't returned. I wouldn't have come here if it weren't for the rest of my party choosing this place. It's just average prices southern diner food that could be found elsewhere. Never coming here again. Ever. I give them less than a star. read more

BTD is a great Mobile fixture that most people in Mobile would say is a must to try if you spend any time here. Nice, old fashioned diner setting and atmosphere with good shakes and American food. If you come here I would suggest the chicken or shrimp Philly, both of which I have a hard time straying from. The owner is a great guy who likes to interact with his customers. The service is always good, and the only problem I've ever had was the portion sizes have not always been consistent, but I simply pointed it out and they fixed it immediately. read more
