Boats pull right up to the dock and everyone is so friendly! Now the food: I rarely eat beef but after hearing so many positive things about the burger, I gave it a try. OMG drip down your elbows juicy! Served with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red onions and some sort of spicy red sauce that added the perfect touch. Fries were hot, crispy, and full of flavor. I arrived for a late lunch and just before a pretty electric thunderstorm rolled in. Outside seating was pretty nice but if not for the incoming storm it would have been miserable and hot. We ordered the fried shrooms, crawfish queso and firecracker shrimp. Everything was fried and it was very hot and freshly prepared. It's just typical bar food. Husband and I went here for the first time after hearing everyone rave about it. No one tells you this, and there are no signs indicating it either, but you have to order from a little window. The line was long and only one guy takes orders. Then you take your table number and find a seat. There were three things we tried to order from the menu that they were out of. The Dr Pepper they gave me was flat. Zero carbonation. My husband had to get back in the long line to get it swapped out for something else. Several people who ordered after us got their food way before us. Not sure how or why, but we weren't happy. We finally got our food after a 41 minute wait (I checked the time on the receipt when I paid.) My husband shrimp poboy was cold. The shrimp had great flavor, but clearly had been sitting there for a while before they brought it out. My burger, on the other hand, had no seasoning. I was highly disappointed. The views were great. The vibe was nice. That's the only reason it got 2 stars instead of one. But service and food quality was really lacking. The guy told my husband someone comes around to get your drink refills, but no one ever did. The only interaction we had with staff was ordering and then them dropping off our food. I might would go back for the live music because a band we like plays there often, but I definitely will not eat there. And getting in line for a drink each time? Super lame. read more

I was down this direction looking for seafood and literally saw the sign pointing to river shack. I love being around the water. This is a place that matches the name for a quaint river shack on the water with a Marina. Large open eating area when you walk in then a great bar and TV in the back partially inside and out. lots of regulars, great views, relaxed atmosphere. I got me a blackened catfish sandwich, which was fantastic and hot crispy fries, and a cold beer or two and this was exactly what I was looking for. Just a good old pub on the river, great, food, selections, great service, good for families or single, travelers, or locals. This place reminds me of a PG version of the Porky's movie series. A great vibe to let your hair down without judgement. The service staff needs more training in customer service, well maybe not considering the regulars. The menu has the potential to be exceptional, but leaves plenty to desire. Shack is a generous term for this rambling, rustic boathouse turned restaurant. There didn't seem to be an inch of paint or stain on the walls, it looked like it was built by 3 people with 3 different blueprints ... what an absolute dive. But man, was it good! The staff was so helpful and friendly, the wait for the food was not too long (although they have a sign indicating it might be a 30-45 min wait), and the scenery was gorgeous. They even have cats! I was honored to give Sushi a few pets while we waited for our food, until I turned my attention to the lovely view. There was only 2 negatives. One, it was hot. I realize this is south alabama in July in an open air restaurant. Makes a great atmosphere but I was sweating and lost my appetite. Which kinda worked out because as for number two; the Shack fries were amazingly yummy until I got to the bottom layer and then it was really just a layer of grease. Next time I would order the burger that my husband had, and the bite I tried was really delicious. So yes, I would definitely eat here again! And you should too if you are in the area! If this is what shack food is about, then count me in! Everything about this place is straight up dive, but in the best way possible. When you first come in, there is a small booth type spot that people line up at to place their orders. Menu boards on the wall with call outs of what the food line up is. My wife went for the loaded fries and a watermelon sour - all in she gave it a 4 star. The sour was good, but not her favorite and the bottom layer of fries were on the soggy side. I went with the signature bushwacker with a banana rum shot and whisky shot to go along with the bacon burger. Mine was spot on! That burger legit qualifies as one of the top five best I've had. Super flavorful, cooked perfectly, still juicy ..... so good! The bushwacker - really good! Perfect for the warm setting of the day. One note, this place is open air. They do have fans and there is a breeze coming off the bay, but it can be a little warm. Strategic seat selections can help ensure that you are able to stay cool (near the oscillating fans). Staff were friendly and approved of our order .... telling us how pleased we were going to be with what we had selected. Prices are reasonable - exactly what I'd expect to pay for what we got. If we lived here, I can tell this would be a place I'd want to frequent. Highly recommended and we will return if we are in the area again. read more

Haven't been here since the last redo and revamping of ordering system. Last visit was sit down dinner style with table service this was an attentive McDonald's style. Went with some friends on a Saturday night live music by a local band that played some popular older songs. Very loudly. We migrated indoors for the food time. Did I mention it was loud in the outdoor area? Drinks were well balanced and the food was quick and fresh very good. Probably the best $14 cheeseburger in the neighborhood.
