Look, still my fav kabob spot.. here's a few tips on what to order. From a meats perspective the gyro and chicken are both good, but the chicken is where the flavor is at. Can never go wrong with what I think so the best dish, chicken over rice, with the chickpeas and salad, def add the classic white sauce along with the cilantro sauce, and throw some jalapeños on for a kick. While the loaded fries look amazing, they're probably the most average dish there. Lots of fries, but need more meet and veggies on it, it's loaded with fries, but not topping, add the crushed takis for texture and spice. read more

The food was okay, there was nothing "wow" about it. I got the falafel platter and my husband got the chicken. The falafel was dry in my opinion, the saving grace was the sauce and hummus they put on top. My salad with the same sauce was great. The fries were good, a bit salty, but good. For the price here vs. Halal guys... you don't get more than 3 toppings without additional charges. Also they gave me someone else's order yesterday. I had ordered the chicken over rice platter and you get a choice of one side( chickpeas was mines) cucumbers, tomatoes, and cranberries. Instead I got lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. It wasn't a game changer, but I wish I got what I asked for. Also there was a LONG WAIT TIME, considering there was only 5 of us there with three workers, the order took almost 20 minutes to make. Now I know order ahead of time... other than that I was super happy with the overall taste and quality of the food. I love when I finally make it out to try a food spot and it is as good, or sometimes even better than you imagined it would be. My visit to Big Red Halal was one of those times. The customer service and the food was actually better than I had imagined it would be and I was already thinking it was going to be good, which is why they were on my foodie to-do list. When I first entered the door, I was given a friendly greeting and I told the gentleman that it was my first time dining at his establishment. He was more than happy to explain all the different menu options that they had and I ended up ordering a Combo Rice Platter with Gyro (Lamb) and Chicken. I selected Chickpeas as my side. I got their White Sauce on top. I also was curious about their Cilantro sauce so I had that on the side, as well. Everything tasted fresh on this platter. Every ingredients' flavor complemented each other in the best way. The small side of Feta Cheese, Olives, and Cucumbers really accented everything for me. The rice wasn't dried out like some places make it...it was cooked to perfection. I also loved that they gave enough protein/meat and White Sauce to be able to truly enjoy the whole platter. And that Cilantro Sauce was delicious as well. All of the staff I encountered was friendly and helpful and the cleanliness was up to par to what I expect from a well run food establishment. Big Red Halal is a hidden gem off of I-95 that was a pleasant surprise to find. The meat was very fresh and the sauces just popped - each distinctively. I think it brings a lot more personality to the table than Halal Guys or a similar chain because this one has more unique sides that hints at what the cuisine really is and not just a fast food alternative. They offer solid catering package and excellent flavor on some favorite party dishes- even the kids loved the rice and chicken! They are clearly very comfortable with large orders on short notice. So, I had to stop eating my food to make this review. So you know this is going to be good! This was my first time here, so I went ahead and go the "Combo Rice" which includes their chicken and lamb gyro. After opening up my takeout, you can smell the aroma hit you and right away you'll know this will be good. The chicken and lamb gyro is delicious, and with the chick pea and spinach mixed in together, this makes the perfect combo. They are very generous with their portions as well, you get a good amount of chicken and chunks of lamb! I think I just found a new spot that will replace Halal Guys for a while. It's called Big Red Halal for a reason. Of course "Red" because the chicken is red, but BIG because the portion they give you is humongous. One bowl for $11 was able to feed me and my boyfriend easily. Not just fed us both, but made us both uncomfortably full (we do it to ourselves, but we love it). What I like even more is their lamb gyro along with their chickpeas and flat bread, way better than the lousy lettuce and tomatoes from Halal Guys. Douse it in white sauce and red sauce and you'll be in ecstasy. This is such a good deal that I wonder why people would even go to Halal Guys. Come on guys, get with the program! I went back on 16 Dec, and noticed the owner/manager was back behind the counter and everything was back in order. Food was good like before Chicken was plentiful like before Bread was slightly toasted and not burnt like before I actually end up showing the owner/manager the pics of the burnt bread from my previous visit while he was ringing up the food. He was extremely apologetic, which was welcoming to have a nice conversation about my experience. All in all, the food was back to the standard that kept me coming back. Big Red Halal is definitely one of my favorite food trucks! This Afghan food truck makes its rounds around the NoVA area, so keep up with their social media for their schedule. Currently, the menu is all about their Chicken over Rice, Lamb over Rice, Falafel over Rice, or Combo over Rice - they also have super large family/catering options available, and other limited time specials. The hubs and I usually share the Combo Over Rice, which comes with chicken and lamb over seasoned rice, your choice of chicken-potato qorma or sauteed spinach (we go for the chicken-potato), and each plate comes with bread. Let me tell you - this place packs it in! The amount of protein that's given is unbelievable - the ratio between the protein and the rice is very fair! I love their chicken-potato quorma, as the chickpeas are cooked fully (no one likes undercooked chickpeas!)! I mean, I can eat, but it's a struggle to even finish half of an order! They also have a variety of sauces, and I recommend their white sauce as well as their Thai red chili (super spicy, but so good!). I love the fact that this place has been consistent, every single time. That's what strict quality control is all about! The flavors are SO GOOD, and everything is really cooked to perfection! this place has super local vibes! think halal guys but family owned. the people running this place are so accommodating and truly so welcoming... every visit they speak to me so warmly and they are really just the nicest people. when i mentioned it was my first visit they were very patient with me. they allowed me to get two sides in my bowl (half and half) so i could try a couple things with my bowl. i got gyro the first time but realized that the chicken is the way to go!! it seems to be how they got the name big red. it's so flavorful and delicious. i want to try falafel next time :-) they have two sauce options similar to halal guys -- red and white -- the white is good, but the red spicy sauce is a bit too sweet for me, not too spicy though! there's another spicier sauce that's green, and a few other options that didn't interest me too much... bbq... the pakowra is sooo good. it's $4 for 3 sizeable pieces. i ate them when i got home and they were still crisp even though they were wrapped for a while!! and the cilantro dipping sauce is soo yummy.!! i really love this place and can see myself becoming a regular... the food is great and the people :') so nice read more

My wife and I tried Big Red Halal for the first time today. We ordered the soup, primarily because she is gluten intolerant and the soup they said is gluten free. I'm not sure whether I would call it soup or stew, but it was very, very good. A lot of ingredients and a lot of flavor. Since I am not gluten intolerant, they gave me some bread to go with mine and it was also excellent. At any rate, we will no doubt stop by again when we are in the area.
