Sunset behind the bridge

Loaded nachos exceeded our expectations. Moved inside to the bar to eat because the bugs/nats were bothering us. Sunset was awesome! No need to dress up, shirt, shorts and flips flops and your good.

Ive always wanted to visit this place passing it from the bridge and we finally decided to check it out. Parking is part of the park and costs $10 for out of state cars since there is beach access, $5 for DE plates. We were sat within 30 minutes and they had live music which was nice. This place is all about the view and vibe, great for drinks and hanging out but horrible if you want a decent meal. The food was not good, and I don't say this often. No one enjoyed their meal. The chips were from a bag, the salsa tasted blended up, no flavor in the guac, the cheese tasted like mac and cheese. The fish and chips was all breading but so clearly frozen and not fresh. If you need fries, ask for them double fried otherwise not cripsy and are stale. The coconut shrimp might have been the only ok thing but still wasn't fresh. Pretty disappointing. If we come back it'll be only for a drink.

Bay cheeseburger with Hawaiian pasta salad

Big Chill is perfectly located with access from the beach. The atmosphere is 5-star worthy. Food, drinks and service are somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. My cheeseburger looked good but tasted pretty average and the pasta salad lacked any flavor whatsoever. But overall I do enjoy coming and love that I don't have to pack up on the beach before grabbing lunch. They also have games and Adirondack chairs in the sand pit. Overall a good place to stop for something to eat during a beach day.

Best ever south side nachos with shrimp

The food at Big Chill beach club is really good. The south side nachos with shrimp taste great and is my new favorite, the pickled  jalapeños were not too hot, the guacamole and sour cream dollops were really tasty, the queso black beans and house made salsa were just the right amount keeping the house made tortilla chips crunchy. The grilled sea bass soft tacos with red cabbage were good. The tropical salsa, & chipotle crema gave it extra flavor, but there needed to be more fish in the tacos. The side of crinkle cut fries were salted just right and very tasty. The outside seating is great, and the service is always great. I will be back to try other dishes.

What a wonderful location and the views are stunning. Service is good. It's breezy up top and anything not nailed down will blow away so be warned. The gulls can be a little annoying too. The food is good, nothing epic but definitely good eats. We had the kahlua pork sliders & calamari apps. We split the Mahi tacos which were really good. Key lime cake from a local baker was the best thing we ate.

Nachos with Chicken

Sometimes, while vacationing at the beach, you are blessed to find a hidden gem of a restaurant along the shores, other times you pay to park at a Delaware national park just to wait too long for subpar food and a forgettable experience all around: the latter would be the Big Chill. The drinks came out fast but they were not great. The margarita was as salty as if it was made with ocean water. The lemon crush was slightly less acidic than eating a lemon itself. We waited for what seemed like forever for the food to come out. And the unfortunate slow reveal left our jaws dropping for a lackluster presentation that was nothing short of disastrous, like someone had randomly dropped food on our plates, some of it half eaten or at least molested. The mahi tacos were okay in taste but disappointing for the cost. The worst part was the side of Hawaiian pasta salad, which I guess translates to "an embarrassingly small portion of plain, unseasoned pasta with bits of carrot" because that's all it was. Someone at our table got the burger which looked like dry beef patties from your local grocery store freezer. They didn't ask how well to cook the meat because the only choice was apparently "jerky." The crinkle cut fries seemed just like more frozen fare and lacked salt. Definitely not your typical boardwalk fry experience. The nachos were another sure bet for utter failure. The bottom layer of crumbled up chips on the plate made it look like the chef had clumsily rolled on top of them before getting up from his/her nap to finish cooking our meal. A pig could have conjured up a better fantasy of homogenous slop than what we witnessed here. At least the Big Chill did have a pretty cool sand pit area with games that we could have made better use of. Likely we could have gotten in 10 games of cornhole, 8 games of connect four, built a sandcastle and sung a medley of campfire songs while waiting for our sad meal to be brought to our table. Anyway, the atmosphere alone outshined everything else at least enough to warrant two stars. The Big Chill did nothing to warm our spirits. That is for sure. Hopefully this place gets its act together, or they bull doze it to make more room for natural beauty and wildlife.

What a view! We've been visiting the area for 17+ year and I can't believe it took us until now to visit. The food was delicious, definitely more of a bar food selection, but a good one. The service was quick and our waitress was super friendly.

As the season winds down, always enjoy lunch at Big Chill! Thrilled that happy hour started again M-F 4-7! Love their Mahi tacos. Service was great, Ann he was kind enough to look up specials at other affiliated places (Cantina and Crooked Hammock)!

Ask the Community - Big Chill Beach Club

Is this a good spot to hit the beach for the day then grab a bit to eat before heading home?

Absolutely. You can get food & eat it on the beach or sit at a table down on the deck, or you can go upstairs & eat in the dining area overlooking the beach.… Read more

As you can see from my more than ten past reviews over 4 years and my last review in August 2025…read morethis is now one of my top three happy hour restaurants during the off season. I will summarize my four most recent happy hour off season visits. We were first here at the bar with my six family and friends. Well finally the off season happy hour half price dinner entrees have finally returned here starting around mid October with pretty much the same entrees and menu as last year. They subsequently updated the half price entrees in early November. All items have pretty much returned here except for some new entrees. The good news is that at least two new half price happy hour dinner entrees were added including the surf and turf with espresso encrusted 4 ounce demi filet mignon with two skewered shrimps, yukon mash, tomato garnash with blue cheese in the middle of the tomato for $40 or half price for only $20. I never had espresso encrusted filet mignon, therefore I ordered and enjoyed mine medium rare. I could barely taste the encrusted espresso. I ended my dinner with my favorite Fiddlehead's draft honey porter for $6. My total bill was $111 with half price discount of $36.50 so my final bill was $77. On my second return I enjoyed my ahi tuna rice bowl with broccoli, ginger fried house rice, sprouts and ginger vinaigrette for $36 or half price for $18. My total bill was $72 excluding gratuity. On my third return I again enjoyed the espresso encrusted 4 ounce demi filet mignon, which I had ordered medium rare, but was over cooked to medium. I did not complain about returning my filet for a replacement, however I did show it to bartender Dennis. Next time I will order my filet rare. On my fourth return I enjoyed my usual cosmos and my ahi tuna rice bowl which was always properly cooked ahi style. Bartender Dennis always remembers I prefer a little extra spice, without me even asking for my Sriracha. Dennis recommended both of the above entrees. See my most recent pic of the new menu. Chef Cowan waved to me at the bar. Bartender Dennis served us very well supported by our usual excellent recommendations and conversations. Chandra and Cameron also said hello. The staff here are very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. On Black Friday I purchased another $1k in gift cards for the off season from Off The Hook and Hooked in OC. Needless to say we will continue to return here for happy hour to spend our $1k.

Wish there was more octopus in the other starter but had good antipasto like flavors. I got the double cut pork chop as my main and enjoyed. It was cooked well and I liked the balsamic on the plate, however I do wish it had some sauce to pair with. The potatoes were great and a crowd pleaser. Drinks were solid. The pear martini was fresh and sweet. Shirley temple was standard but could've been fizzier in my opinion. We split 4 desserts amongst us: key lime pie, honey cake, flourless chocolate cake, and a peach crumb cake. The honey cake is unique and had a great moist yet spongy texture. The pie was a runner up, we liked the tartness and thick crust. We do wish our server paid more attention to us especially in the beginning. We weren't offered any bread and felt like the wait for food was very long. Other tables who arrived after us had already got their entrees and desserts while we were still waiting for mains. He also didn't check up on us like he did with the surrounding tables. The young bus boy however was great and kindly helped us in between.

We came by on a rainy late afternoon and were the only people in line. We missed the afternoon rush…read moreand the rain must have also been keeping people inside because every other time we have driven by Upscale there was usually a line. My brother knew he wanted to try the lobster roll, but my dad asked what they recommended. The guy, who we found out later to be the owner, went through each menu item, telling us how they get the ingredients and how everything is prepared. All the seafood is brought in fresh and it is Upscale that freezes it themselves, only to thaw the day of preparation. Some of their sauces, like the tartar sauce and remoulade sauce, are homemade. The owner seemed very passionate about his business and seemed to value quality of ingredients immensely. In addition to the lobster roll we also ordered the crab cake sandwich, fried shrimp, and french fries. The order was a little pricey, but for quality seafood that is expected. We did have to wait about fifteen minutes for the food to be ready, as they were making the food right then. While I only tried a piece of the lobster roll this day, my dad and brother were instantly impressed. The lobster roll was perfectly buttered and grilled, with fresh lobster and bread. My dad said it may have been the best crab cake sandwich he has ever had. The crab cake was all jumbo lump crab and perfectly crispy on the outside. They also loved the fried shrimp and french fries. My brother always says you know it's a good french fry if it does not need ketchup and he did not need ketchup for these fries. Overall, Upscale seems to be an awesome addition to the Bethany Beach scene and is a must try for all seafood lovers. Even the non-seafood lovers may want to try it out too!
