My small old school sporting good store that has weathered and outlasted all others over the decades. And I've been coming here since a wee young lad so like 4-5 of those decades! So many years of reliability for last minute fishing tackle and bait for me and friends. Hooks, frozen mackerels, and night crawlers have topped the list. You may not find it all here, but they do have online shopping too. Oh and if you sign up with your email, you will get daily deals and coupons that provide additional savings. You can search to see which locations have the items in stock, which is nice. Sometimes you get there and they don't have it..However, you'd be surprised though how much they pack into a small store, as normally the items are in stock at this location. The employees have been helpful to me, but most work part time, are a little distracted, and some won't have knowledge with specific questions on items. But they do try their best it seems. This best thing to me is this corporation seems to be one of the few that are not closing locations, because there is always a demand for sporting activities. They have the basics whether you are playing sports and/or hunting or fishing. Even just frisbee throwing! They constantly offer good deals on running and workout shoes and apparel. I am irritated. They "supposed" to CLOSE at 7:30PM & I arrived at 7 o'clock. I got off and the guy was just staring at us, then he did his hand gesture, saying go away????? I came in positive and jovial. I had paid the $20 for the ammunition background check. The lady said it could take days to be approved. I returned everyday for about 4 days and she continued to say it could take a little longer, she said she would call me when it gets approved. Weeks went by and I came in a few days ago. A different lady had said it was approved and I had two days to purchase ammo. I came in two days later with money and she said even though it was submitted at 11am, it was expired by 9 am. She said usually it expires the time it was submitted. So now $20 gone and if I want to buy ammo I have to spend another $20. The employees say things that they do not hold account to. If you say your going to call me then do it. Don't tell me I have two days to buy ammo if I actually don't. All she said was sorry. So I go in the store at 4:30 to buy 9 mm ammo. Obviously a manager and 1 other employees are behind the counter at the front door joking and clowning around with only one customer in the store. Finally we go over and ask the manager if she can help us in weapons department as she's standing there clearly flirting with 1 of her employees. She says she's the manager and she has to have coverage on the sales floor With no other customers inside other than myself and a female friend. Very horrible customer service. I came here to buy a treadmill for our family. We asked the employee about a treadmill if they do delivery service and assembly for it. They told us no that it should just come right out the box assembled. This is NOT assembled. Very many, too many complicated steps to building it! Highly do not recommend the worker (short latina chubby) who lied to us about the assembly of the treadmill already in the box. Time was around 9:40am : Rude opener just slams and locks door when it says their Monday hours start at 9:30! She obviously saw me walking to the door for the 2nd time. We had gone to a big five in spring valley didn't find what we wanted so we came to this big 5 thinking we could make it since we looked it up and said closed at 7:30. We got there 7 just now and the doors were locked, there must have been 4 different groups of customers trying to come into the store and getting turned away as we were leaving. And the employees were also just yelling through the door and looking At one another like they were annoyed of us. I am a regular customer who shops often at Big 5 for the junior high flag football team that I coach for. We are required to provide a game ball for each contest. Our ball unexpectedly went flat today. Immediately after work, I raced over to the store to see the doors locked and the gate down before 8:30pm. I knocked on the door and pleaded with, David, the manager to let me in. He explained that the registers were already turned off. I told him those would have had to be turned off early, too, if they were unavailable. I begged again to be let in to quickly purchase one youth football for my team to be able to play in the morning. David refused again. Tonight David lost a lifelong customer from his store. I also will be conveying this information to our team and league management that no flag teams use Big Five in Chula Vista, San Diego, Poway, El Cajon, or Santee in the future. read more

Terrible, terrible, terrible customer service in the shoe department. Two, four, six, eight minutes of waiting for the clerk to come from the back room with my shoes. Lack of knowledge, not properly trained, inefficient. I gave one male clerk two shoe choices I wanted to try on and a female returned with one shoe in a box and a totally different shoe for me to try. What happened to my choices? This is a typical Big 5 there's nothing really special but it's alright. They have some cool stuff that I usually shop for like ammo which is always about a few dollars more. They have ears and eye protection for shooting which is great because those items are on sale a lot. I just stay in the guns and ammo section because that's what I shop for. There's always a sale which is awesome because most of there stuff is pretty pricey from their knives to their ammo. They do have a nice selection binoculars but I haven't seen any camo binoculars. So overall this Big 5 is just alright and the location isn't that great because it's on this corner which is hard to get out of sometimes. The employees are pretty nice and helpful. read more

I brought my 83 year old mom in to try on some knee braces. I asked where they are located and he just pointed to the corner. They didn't have her size. We asked if he could check for other stores. He said El Cajon had it and handed me the phone number and said for me to call the store to see if it was in stock. He had no customers at the register. Just got off the phone with a gentleman from sales and that was the most irritating phone call, if you can even call it that, in a while. I asked him a simple question and he caught an attitude with me at first and then he put me on hold for over 23 minutes to "verify" if they have the item in stock. I got irritated and just hung up after waiting for over 23 minutes of and didn't wait for him to return. Like cmon no one has the time to put up with your crappy attitude and your slow reaction time. Romella has had an up beat, down to earth & very professional in serving me as well as others. Her coworkers have the same attitude towards people coming in the store. They have a lot of patrons that come & go. Some with attitudes that expect royalty & others like myself that's not sure what to buy due to all the option. I've been to this location on and off though out the years. And I see these few reviews which is not much of a sampling for a business that has been around for as long as they have that rates the poor in customer service. For me, customer service has always been A-1 (when I need it) and today's service deserves a Yelp Review. Tracy or Tracie was at the cashiers area and noticed me as I was looking for something particular and even though I was in the correct area, I did not find it. She came out from behind the counter and pointed out the product and was quick to say if it was the smaller, see-thru case style I was after "they were currently sold out". But, she offered (without me asking) if I would like her to call other stores and check their stock. "wow!" Took a little while but another store within a 20 minutes drive away had them and set them aside for me to go pick up. She made sure the other store knew I was coming right now and to have them at the front desk. She asked if there was anything else that she could help me with before she said "thank you" to me! For what? It's me who should have said "thank you" first and foremost for the excellent service she provided. I did have to ask her name as she did not have a name badge on hence me maybe spelling her name wrong? And be friendly and you might get the same in return. If you want to be ignored for 10 minutes while two employees just stand there talking and eating this is the store and location for you. I decided to buy new boots anyways only because my old shoes were falling apart from the seems literally. Unfortunately these new boots are causing discomfort and some slight pain on my right foot. I made sure to try them on three different pair from 11 to 11 1/2 to 12 we or wide. I purchased the size 12, I am not sure if it is because of a lack of arch support but I will buy some shoe inserts see what happens. If the inserts work fine and dandy if not I will throw the shoes in the trash and I will never go back there and purchase elsewhere. read more

I wish I could give a personal zero to the unprofessional manager named Jason. So my family and I went to Palm Springs for Christmas and I went to a big five in that area to buy snow equipment, gloves, beanies, ski masks, sleds for the four of us. The plan was to go to the tramway to enjoy snow but unfortunately long story short way too long of a wait both days and couldn't make it. On the fifteen minute trip from big five to tramway we opened our newly purchased items and tried them on, but only in the spaces of my truck, once we saw that the way was over 4 hours we had to break it to the kids that it wasn't feasible to wait and unfortunately we'll have to pick another activity. The items purchased were only tried on in my truck, never used out doors. I go in yesterday to ask them questions on what I could do for an exchange and was even planning on purchasing shoes for my boy and upon speaking to the initial cashier she does an inspection where she looks and says ultimately the decision is for my manager. This guy comes up and without thoroughly inspecting anything instantly fires at me saying "No! You've used these we're not taking this back" I'm blown away on how unprofessional this situation was handled. So what, you're calling me a liar in front of my kid after I just explained what happened ? There were a few dust scuffs in the gloves and a little fuzz on the beanie. I could totally understand if you actually looked and said you know I can't accept this and that but not this. That's actually working with your customer and doing your job. But to come up and in .3 seconds accuse me of using items I never did, in front of my kid that was there and knows we never used the items, you're out of line. I've been to many Big 5 stores and this location was probably one of the easiest ones to get in and out of. I came here to buy a pool float. I get the good non piece of crap kind. It was on sale for $9.99 versus $15.99!!! I asked a worker before I bought it if he could put air in it and he did. Great customer service right there!!! Would have given it 5 stars (rare for me to give 5 star reviews too) if it wasn't for one thing.... When I went to pay for the float, there was someone returning a ball and the girl at the register had to call an employee to assist with it. Once that employee left, she rang up customers who weren't even on line with me yet but just walking towards the register. WTF? I felt she should have rang me up first since I was waiting first. read more

I had never been to a Big 5 Sporting goods store before. I was hoping to look for some sneakers there. FIrst of all, it's not nearly as big as some of the other sports store like Sport Chalet. There is a huge sign of a sneaker on the wall that looks circa 1981. When I looked at the sneakers I thought for sure they were used. They all looked kind of yellow and dirty. I honestly don't know would ever buy shoes here. There seemed to be some ok sales on a few things, like I saw a yoga "kit" that looked decent. But honestly I would never come back here again unless I needed some tennis balls or something like that in an emergency. The place just seemed run down and depressing. read more

I have shopped here twice in the last year. Frankly, I got the same vibe I have gotten at most Radio Shack stores. The staff (other than the Big 5 cashier) just don't seem all that friendly or knowledgeable about their merchandise. When I showed the male clerk a Big 5 advertisement for Adidas pants I printed from their website and he seemed befuddled at first, it came as a bit of a surprise. On my previous trip to this same store I was looking for a second pair of Dunlop 'athletic' pants after purchasing the last pair in stock at another Big 5 for a great price. When I mentioned this to the somewhat unfriendly older African American clerk he said to me in a surprisingly borderline argumentative voice, "We don't carry that brand." Huh? I just bought a pair at your store in Kearney Mesa. I actually had to show him the label inside my waistband to convince him. I had to laugh when I returned to my car. Having experienced cavalier attitude toward customers at other Big 5's (e.g., Kearney Mesa) I tend to blame this on an inferior corporate business model. When a business like this faces perhaps its biggest competition from online sellers one would think they would put a premium on customer service and a knowledgeable staff. read more

This is a great Big 5 location. Everyone is very helpful, and polite. I went here to buy some tennis shoes, and the staff in the shoe section had to bring me about 3 different shoes. Each time, they answered any questions I had, and they were knowledgeable about the shoes I picked. I stayed in the store for about 30 minutes, and all the staff members stayed busy helping customers, and straightening the store. When I went to the checkout stand, the cashier, Andrew, was kind, funny, and polite. He was very efficient, and even gave me more information about the store and my shoes. I will definitely be coming back to this store for all my sporting goods. read more

I love this place. And I also kinda hate it. They have all kinds of stuff that I like but they're overpriced! If you're coming for ammo show up on Monday morning an hour before they open. If you're looking for .22lr call at 7 or 8 to see if they're even getting any. They do have good sales on shoes sometimes. The gun prices are very close to MSRP unless on sale. The ammo is just plain expensive but what can you expect. But I do love this store, awesome customer service, wide array of survival tools, knives ALWAYS on sale. Oh and they don't sell pistols, but they sell pistol ammo. And BB/airsoft guns. They also carry bear spray which is cool, and machetes(got a nice one on sale for like $18). "Seasonal" stuff is always coming thru and sales are always going on so check the Big 5 ad online every week. read more

I needed a pair of work boots and my last pair from here were very comfortable. So I went in and found they were out of the waterproof pair and asked about a different pair. I should have taken longer to walk in them. I wore them for part of a day and my left outer ankle bone hurt so much I had to take them off and wear my sandals. When I had the chance to take them back the manager said NO WAY he was going to exchange or refund. A mere $27. I was so mad I shoved the box back towards him. He said he was going to throw them away. That didn't make any sense, boots that hurt. Would you not return them to the manufacturer? I thought to my self after getting home about my management training in the past. I was taught that a refund or exchange nets positive conversations with people. I also was taught that a lack of concern for the customer's experience will net negative conversations. So instead of me telling 100 people what a good job they were doing, I'm going to tell approximately 1000 people a year for years to come. I own my own business and help about 1000 people a year and enjoy a great reputation which allows me to not spend any money advertising anymore. Can you say the same? read more
