I felt very uncomfortable at this location, yes I still ended up purchasing what I needed, but I won't be heading back. It was not a good experience. Entering the building was fine it is when I began browsing (which is literally what you do at a store) and taking my time to read and look at items. I'm a Millennial, indecisive, curious (Googling different brands & reviews), and I don't have much to none experience so once again I was browsing. I never received a "can I help you find something" or "if you need any help or have questions I'll be happy to answer". I had brought in my recycled tote bag as I try to not use plastic bags. I kept placing items inside, and I was there for a good hour. 3 different associates at different times at different spots came up and said (NOT asked), "I can hold your items at the front for you". I have worked in retail and that line is basically, "you're probably going to steal, we should take your items". In my experience, I have only said that when I unlocked expensive items or if they were carrying something heavy and hadn't gotten a kart to push. I the most inconvenient item I had was a miniature fishing rod sticking maybe 7 inches out of my tote bag and a camel backpack I was also carrying. Nothing I could not carry. 3 different times they asked me that question and I should have asked them, "Do you think I'm going to run out with these items?" -although at the end I asked "Have you guys been experiencing a lot of theft lately?" which to they responded, "No". Again I have worked retail and items are insured and the company will be paid back, it is also not the associates money. I worked at a CVS, a lot of things were stolen and I could have cared less. A tall slender kind of begrudging man behind the knife display said he could ring me up. I almost checked out, but the camel backpack rung up as the incorrect price, even though the sales signs were literally on the wall and the sale tags stapled on the actual bag. He did not want to honor their error, "well it comes up as $54.99". Another man came by and I told him to help the man while I check the sales again- the name of the bag and the SKU & Item number. I was correct. Instead of returning to him I went to the front and was checked out there where again I told them about the sale tag. They honored it and made sure to remove the sales signs. I spent close to $200 there. I wish I had gone to a better store, but I had already gathered the things I wanted. I won't be returning to that location even though it is closer than others. A different location actually interacted with me, explained differences, made the experience interesting and fun- they also weren't hovering over me like vultures. read more

Went in to look at something in the knife section and no one would come over to help. The employees here are usually pretty helpful and I do like the daily deals they offer. But if no one will get the items out of then case then non of that matters. read more

Kaylee the store manager would not allow a refund for An item purchases the day before in the same exact store never used even able to show exact amount spent in bank account. Literally refunded 1/2 the price purchased the day prior!!! Wouldn't shop at any big 5 locations terrible return policy & bad customer service. read more

My husband asked to use the bathroom and the clerk said, no. That's perfectly fine, nothing wrong with that. It's what followed the "No" that is the issue. After telling my husband that he couldn't use the restroom the clerk went on to complain loudly to another employee about customers wanting to use the bathroom and how it isn't his problem and that it was annoying how people constantly asked to use the bathroom and their past experiences with customers asking to use the restroom. It was extremely rude and uncalled for when my husband didn't do or say anything. My husband said, "Okay, thank you." Only for them to speak about how it isn't their problem that customers have to pee. Rude experience and unprofessional on their part. We were there for about 10 minutes and their attitude the entire time was very disrespectful. read more

The worst sporting good experience ever. Went to buy a soccer ball for my grandkid and there were all these employees all over the store just standing there. Nobody was helpful except eyeing you like your going to steal. I finally found the soccer balls then went to pay. At the register was the worst customer service I have experienced in my life. The most apathetic person was ringing me out. No "Hi""Did you find everything okay?"or "Thank You"; you know basic retail conversation. I left a little miffed. Never coming back ever again. Going to Play It Again Sports in La Mesa. Way better customer service. They are getting my money instead. If I could give negative stars. Big 5 on Campo Road would get them. Big pass. I came in looking for size 15 shoes for a gift and they didn't have it. But one guy whom I forgot his name, went out above and beyond by checking all the stores near us to see who has size 15 nike. Then at checkout, we couldn't find the correct coupon for an item and the cashier (yes I forgot his name also) again went above and beyond to check all the baroda lol.. I also saw a light which I was curious on how it works. He patiently showed me so I bought it. Customer service in this location is amazing!! I was able to purchase a great pair of comfortable Sketcher training shoes from this Big 5, and to top it off, I was able to take advantage of a $10 off mailer coupon that arrived the day before. They did not have many Sketchers at this smaller location, but they had just enough to satisfy exactly what I needed. I needed something in a darker shade and most importantly, something comfortable for every day use. The Sketcher meet and exceeded my expectations. They were a great color and were very comfortable to boot. I liked that the gent on the floor was easy going and did not pressure the sale. At the register, the young lady not only provided some good care tips on my new shoes, but also gave me some good information regarding the store's upcoming sales. She was friendly and very helpful, but most important of all, I really like my comfy shoes. read more

I bought my second pair of Velcro shoes here today. The first pair was to make it easier going through security at the airport. This second pair was to replace the first pair I wore out putting them on with my swollen foot from my broken leg. Five months later the swelling has gone down. They close early often. I got there 15 minutes before they closed to buy a golf glove and they refused to let me in to buy. I would have been and out within 10 minutes at the most and they still would have been able to be lazy and close early. Ryan and Jose are incredibly lazy. read more

I was there yesterday me and my friend and she bought one outfit got the receipt paid in cash and it didn't fit the person she bought it for we took it back the next day and they told her we couldnt return it because of her ID. The clothes wasn't ripped or torn or even messed up we just want to return it because it didn't fit .hear it is two days now and still we haven't returned it and keep giving us the around and all these stupid numbers. "If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck chances are it is". I'm of a Hispanic race and I've actually bought multiple items from this place and every time I've gone inside I've never been asked once if I needed help finding anything. I've even looked/walked around the store for about 30mins and not at a busy time and no one asked to see if I needed assistance. But as soon as a white person walks in I seen multiple employees ask if they needed any help looking for anything. But every time I walk out I'm told by employee "Have a Great Day". And I respond back and say "You Too". I went in today looking for a certain item; walked by the same employees 3 times and they didn't even bat an eye towards me and then a white guy walks in and they asked if they needed help. And it was déjà vu all over again. So I walked out and once again an employee tells me "Have a Great Day". So I did exactly what they have always done to me and ignored that I heard anything. One of the worse customer service I have ever witnessed in retail I went to go buy some baseball pants. I signed up for their email club which will give me 10% off. Their system was not working took 25 minutes and I still didn't receive my coupon I asked them if they can give me the 10% off and override it and they said no we need a barcode. He said that I can go home and come back with the coupon which I'm not gonna waste 30 minutes going back-and-forth for just $2. It wasn't the money it's the principle of the whole matter. On top of it they said comeback July 20th and we have a sale that you can save which wouldn't even be on the item that I was buying. EVAN STYLES!!! The store Manager there is the nicest, most helpful, eager to please, manager-employee I have ever met anywhere in my life. Every time and I mean every time we go into this store and he sees the customer he is right there. You will not leave that store unhappy if he is working. I think it's important to acknowledge the staff here, whom set the bar for customer service. Not only is it a plus to have employees who make your customers laugh, but it helps when your employees can relate to your customers. I found this location on Yelp (it was on the way to practice). It's small but had what we needed. The salesperson was very helpful when I had questions on brands & sizes. If I could this place 10 stars I absolutely would. And it's all because of Antoine. I don't usually shop at big5 but I has a giftcard to use. I had seen some nikes for my son yesterday but didn't grab them so today we stopped at the location near our house and they didn't have them. So I called this location and Antoine was who was in the shoe dept when they transferred me. He was so incredibly kind and helpful. They didn't have the size we need but we decided to go in anyways, and he ensured he'd help us figure out what shoes to get when we got there. I immediately asked for him when we went back to the shoe dept. And he was still super kind and helpful. Even my husband was like wow he's super nice. This is the perfect example of perfect customer service. He enjoyed his job and helping customers you could definitely tell. Even if i wasn't to buy anything it's this type of kind service that will now make me shop more here. I did tell the manager when we were leaving just so he knows how well of a service his employee is delivering. Excellent customer service, specifically because they DON'T hang on you asking if you need help. They are polite and knowledgeable, and seem to know when to step in to offer assistance.
