I really wanted to like this place. We chose this shop specifically to support a local business, but unfortunately our experience was pretty disappointing. When we walked in, none of the young employees greeted us or even made eye contact. We walked around the store for over 10 minutes and not a single person acknowledged us, despite the fact that there was only one other customer in the store. We ended up being there for more than 20 minutes and still no one offered help, asked what we were looking for, or checked in with us at all. It felt like we were completely invisible. We were genuinely hoping to find gear and give our business to a local shop, but the lack of basic customer service made that impossible. Really unfortunate experience, and I hope they address it because the community deserves better. read more

My wife and seven year old daughter went to buy baseball pants and when they were trying on different sizes my wife put a pair back on the rack. Apparently she did not put in the right place and was rudely told by an older man not to do that again. They offer a large variety of sporting goods giving you more options than a big box store while supporting a local Santee business. They prices are great and often even better than online in my experience. Went in on 12/20/22 to get my son a Letterman's jacket. Everything went well at the fitting and was quoted two weeks to pick up the jacket. It's now 01/07/23, more than two weeks of not hearing from Al's so I call and inquire about the jacket. I was dismayed to hear that they need an ADDITIONAL TWO WEEKS to finish my son's jacket. It's been at the embroidery services for over two weeks and it's still not finished? It's ridiculous to wait an entire month for services that were supposed to take only two weeks. Had I known it would take this long I would've taken my business to Berry's in Lemon Grove. Not sure when his jacket will finally be done but I am not a happy customer. Definitely going to urge others to go elsewhere for their jackets. It's a bad business model to over promise and under deliver. read more

So we went to here last week to get supplies for fall ball. I looked up hours here on Yelp, and it said they closed at 5pm. We got there at 4:02, and the new COVID hours were closing at 4pm, Yelp had not been updated . They unlocked the door and let us in, after hours. And they helped us with every single thing we needed. I went in real quick to buy soccer gear for my daughter. Inside the shop were four staff members, all young men, and an older gentleman. Probably the owner or manager. Immediately I was greeted by Jordan. He was very knowledgeable, and made my experience truly exceptional. He made sure my daughter had everything she needed and made sure her cleats fitted her properly, he made sure she had the correct shin guards, and soccer ball for her age. I went in to Al's today to buy my son a swim parka and a school bag, when I got to the register, the cashier quoted a higher price, than what was marked , when I told him that je was charging me $29 more than what was on the price tag and marked on ALL the tags he replied in a sarcastic, rude attitude "I don't care what the price tag says, the price is $129 and not $99.95, even if all the parkas are marked the same. UPDATING BELOW REVIEW**** Let me just say it's 4 stars because I still didn't like the lady on the phone. But ROB! Is amazing. We had issues with my sons helmet and shipping which was the manufactures fault not so much the shop. But he has been on the phone daily with schutt and had the schutt rep call me, and to rectify the situation let my son use a certified helmet while waiting for his helmet to come in. He has gone above and beyond to help me, and my son. I am great full he reached out and apologized for the women on the phone, and overall completely changed my perspective on this place. I am so thankful for Rob. Well. I should give it one star but I'm feeling generous today. I had my sons head measured for football, he measured him small so the helmet that was shipped was the wrong size. Rob said it should be in on Monday or Tuesday. I called back today and asked for rob, the lady on the phone said he was busy. I said okay well I purchased a helmet that was too small and the other one is supposed to be in she said in a RUDE tone "well did we call you?!" Uh no! But he said Monday or Tuesday and I already bought the dang helmet and football season starts today! So she puts me on hold and comes back and says "young lady it's not in we will call you when it is" so I said you have a terrible attitude and if I'm spending this much money on a helmet and pads then I don't want to deal With this attitude and she said she was sorry if I was offended, no I'm not offended. Below are two emails, one from me and one from Don (Don is Al's Sports banner and sticker guy). I'm not writing this as a bashing to Al's Sports Shop, please read this review and then you be the judge. First off, beware if you need anything by a specific date. Whatever date you are given to complete the job, you might as well add another 4 to 6 weeks to your order (and I'm not exaggerating, it was literally excuse after excuse). Also note this was repeat business with much more intended for the future. After six weeks of no progress to my order (a tailgate skin originally quoted to be completed "in a few days") I went ahead and prepared the digital art myself. When Don finally printed it (another week and a half after I gave him the art) it was enlarged the wrong size. He blames the wrong doing on me since I submitted the art and that he had nothing to do with the layout. Okay... that makes sense, but instead of sitting down like two adults to discuss the situation he decides to resolve it by blowing me off. I still believe my art was laid out accurately but Don wants nothing to do with hearing me out. I received no response to eleven straight days of emails and on the twelfth day he finally replies. His reply admits to blowing me off and over what? Taking my email personally? Then he continues the email in quotes "you would be better off taking your business somewhere else". If you would like to find out how accurate this review is, please reach out to Don yourself and ask him. Facts are I email him with issues to the enlargement and he takes it personally then blows me off. I've never been treated with so much disrespect in my life. If one thinks business is as easy as blowing off customers, it may be a while before this one goes away as I'll be leaving this review on every source available to the Internet. Thanks Don. (JIM'S EMAIL): I didn't notice until I already had it half applied, but the images were created about an inch to small all around when you printed it up (detailed description here). I've attached a picture of how it came out. My measurements were right because even if you blew the images up another inch or so, everything would fit much like the samples I sent. Not sure if I want to reprint because my application came out nearly perfect, it looks really good. If I do decide to have another one printed, am I to be charged another $100.00? I bought Jerseys for my softball team 2 months ago and just last week the logo on the front started to peel off. and and it took almost a month to get them done originally.and some of the names were spelled wrong and I had to keep taking shirts back to be fixed. Poor service Now I take 2 jerseys in to have numbers put on back and a week later I still did not get a call saying the numbers were ordered and when they would be done. I was told today that they don't call customers to inform them of when your items are ordered., This place needs better customer service. Went in to buy Tball gear for my 4 year old. I was greeted by 3 or 4 young men who directed me to where the pants were. Then they fitted my son for cleats by measuring his feet. We looked around and ended up buying a bat, some balls, and bag too. The employees were so friendly and helpful especially since we are first time shoppers for all this stuff. I accidentally deleted prior review while editing. Be careful who measures for your kids jacket, and adamant when you pick it up and it is not fitting correctly. My son's sleeves are at least 3-4 inches too long, and the torso of the jacket is huge and baggy, and way too long. Very disappointing for a 330 dollar jacket, as my son refuses to wear it because it is so oversize. read more

As all high school parents know, school sport athletic apparel isn't cheap. It's an investment in your child's school athletics experience though so we bite the bullet and make the big purchases. Two months ago I took my daughter to Al's to order her waterpolo parka for her high school team. We were assisted by a boy who appeared to be 16. Red flag #1. Teen boy proceeded to show us the parkas and the font book for selecting our custom order. We explained we wanted her name embroidered on the front. On the order form he wrote my daughter's name in ALL lowercase letters. I had to instruct him that I wanted the first letter of her name capitalized and he noted it on the order form. Red flag #2. For the lettering on the back I didn't know the exact name of the font but I explained that I wanted the large Varsity style lettering that is usually on Letterman jackets and showed him an example of a sweatshirt they had displayed. He flipped through the book and showed me that it was called "full block". (It's NOT actually, but at this point I'm taking his word for it, he IS the teenage professional advising us after all.) We pay for the parka...a grand sum of $175 and are told it will take 8-10 weeks. When I go to pick up the parka after it's ready my daughter informs me it's not right. The lettering on the back is NOT the correct lettering. I explain to yet ANOTHER teen boy employee and I'm told there's nothing we can do. (Al's seems to employ ONLY teenagers. Love that the business cares about employing teens but when those teens are entrusted with guiding/advising customers on very expensive custom orders the customer is at the mercy of the teenager handling the sale. Scary.) So now we have a nearly $200 custom parka that looks nothing like her team's. Advice to other customers: Request that an adult assist you in your custom order at Al's. Learn from our mistake. read more

I was so happy to support Al's Sport Shop recently as I always see them around town, at Chamber events & love how connected they are with the community! I had heard so many great things about them, I was excited when I had the need to use them for an embroidery item that was a birthday gift for my 3 year old niece. I stopped in at a time that they were actually closed for inventory. I completely understood and was prepared to come back another time. They saw me at the door reading the closed sign and were kind enough to let me in! How nice! I purchased a mini backpack for my niece and brought it to Al's to have her her name embroidered on the front. I did not calculate the time needed to get the job done and the bag was not going to be ready in time for my niece's birthday celebration! Al's shop not only let me in while they were closed, they put a rush on the embroidery and it was ready in time for the birthday! They called before they started the job to ask a clarifying question to ensure they were embroidering it the way I had asked for and called me as soon as it was done so I could get over there and pick it up! Great place; very friendly and helpful staff (without being over-bearing). I stop in every now and then to get some soccer gear. Found some great deals on shorts and they also have just about everything you need for scholastic sports...oh, and get this...I brought in some of my own jerseys with name & number sets and they professionally heat-pressed them on for FREE! Poor customer service. Had patches sewn on existing letterman jacket but unbeknownst to me, clerk messed up pricing on bill. Paid bill in full at time of order. When order was picked up they said still owed $15 even though order was paid in full. They couldn't really understand paperwork to explain why and took about 10 minutes looking at it and getting a supervisor to figure it out? REALLY? Make customer who already paid stand there and wait instead of absorbing $15 for AL's SPORTS SHOP's mistake?? A male worker was standing by making rude comments under breath. After many attempts to explain clerk's error, paid $15 to get out of store. The only reason they must stay in business is because you have to go there for certain things they sell. Also, I am pretty sure they shouldn't have charged tax to sew patches on a USED jacket but they did. Taxed labor portion. I understand people make mistakes but it's how you handle your mistakes that matter. read more

The staff was so helpful, they even set up a separate online order webpage so my friends could order (and pay!) For their own shirts. I waited 2 weeks to have logo silk screen to my shirt. Finally went down to the location and found out graphics artist hasn't even started on the logo. The gentleman who help me with very apologetic and attended to my concern (thank you) what i would have liked is a courtesy phone call or e-mail stating there will be a delay in having my shirts done. Unhappy about the customer service that was given when turning in my shirt. The only reason i went here is because of my past when going to patrick henry. I went in for a price quote on a 250 shirt order with my own design. I waited patiently for a reasonable amount of time before being helped. The issue I had was when the sales associate walked away from me without saying a word to help another customer. He then told me I had to wait, which I had already done. The customer he was helping could have easily been helped by the other associate who was at the register doing nothing. Stopped by Al's Sport Shop today to inquire about silk screening and embroidery. I haven't been to Al's since my high school softball days. Rob T. was extremely patient and helpful. This is a new project type for me and I asked a lot of questions! Rob spent time with me educating me on the products and services available. He gave me several options and explained what the benefits were to each. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of products they offer. It will save me time in starting my new business, to not only have my silk screening and embroidery done at Al's, but business cards, car signage, and much more.
