Probably the best bakery in Brooklyn. The first time, I stopped by for a half-sandwich while running errands in the hood. Bf only got a mocha. His coffee was yummy, but nowhere near as yummy as my sandwich. I had the roast beef. It was perfectly composed, fresh ingredients, delicious relish, yada yada. But THE BREAD. Amazing crumb and just the right amount of crunch. Stopped by for the second time this Sunday to pick up a baguette. Only $4 and the best baguette I've had in years. They hand it to you warm. I would give multiple reviews on different aspects of this place. The bread is fantastic -- definite five star. Some of the reviewers here say the crust is too hard -- it is hard, but the inside is nice and soft and that is the way I like my bread. Pastries are excellent too. My first criticism is the coffee, which I really didn't like at all. And, second, the prices are a bit high. It's also slow getting in an out of there. Bien Cuit. Bien awesome. Seriously love this place. When Bien Cuit showed up in the neighborhood I was a little like, meh, another cafe, take it or leave it, but once I smelled the amazing aroma of freshly baking goods in there, I was in love. The real thing doesn't disappoint either. The croissants are truly blow your mind good - especially if (lucky you!) you get one of the fresh out of the oven ones. And I don't just mean the plain ones. The ham/brie, the chocolate, the almond - all amazing. AND the plain is ridic good also. There is also this apple thing (I can't remember if they call it a croissant or something else or what) that is to die. It has this crema in it that I have literally only found in such perfection in Italy in what they call sfoglias. SO GOOD. The coffee is also great. I'm a cappuccino head through and through and I love the capp at Bien Cuit. Highly recommend this spot for everything - and they have wi fi too. BOOYAH! Their almond croissant (4 1/2 bucks) looked a bit too dark for my liking but oh boy it tasted so delicious. Perfectly flaky with the right amount of almond paste. Like another review mentioned, it is not at all oily. Their Joe's brew coffee is not much to talk about though. A bit too acidic for me. I also had their ham sandwich. Even though it was small and expensive (seven fif ty in 9/2016) it was everything else I wanted. Seriously impressed by this place! only been there once - hence only 4 stars, I might be back to get them that 5th star ;) I was in need of a quick and small snack before entering the jungle of Trader Joe's on a Sunday at 4pm: Bien cuit had *exactly* what I wanted: savory tartines!! I got the salmon one: the fish was flavorful, the veggies were crispy and fresh, the bread was crispy and tasty, the whole thing was great. The coffee was also delicious (I got a cortado which they made to perfection imo). The place itself is nice, bright, and not too busy although it is quite small. Bien Cuit offers some of the best pan au chocolat in the area. They know it, and you'll pay through the nose for it! Light, flakey and not overpowered by chocolate. Come here for the croissants. They have the best croissants - Flaky on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside. Perfection. Stick with the plain croissant because the almond croissant is way too sweet. Sandwiches aren't bad, but they are pretty tough and sometimes the baguette could be rock hard. There also isn't much inside the sandwich other than thin slivers of meat and cheese. Coffee is good, but I would stay away from the hot chocolate and other drinks. "Homemade" hot chocolate here is just chocolate syrup and milk that isn't fully mixed and pretty weak/light. It's more like warm chocolate flavored milk. This is one of the best places to get bread in the city, and I'm thrilled that this place is in my neighborhood. The croissants are also amazing (including the ham and brie concoction). The staff is extrememly friendly, although it can take a while to get through the line if there are a couple of people in front of you. Back to the bread -- the baguettes walk the beautiful balance between crusty outside and chewy inside. The other bread is great as well. Prices on some of the items are a bit high, but I guess they are on par for the quality you get (which is top notch). I'm not a particular fan of the coffee, but that's just me. read more

You had me at the miche. After a handful of disappointing bakery experiences, I began to wonder if there was any decent bread in New York. I'll admit that the I had aversions to Bien Cuit based solely on the storefront -- a lot of hackneyed businesses have been popping up on Smith Street over the last few years and this looked like it could easily be one of them. That said, the miche is delightful, with a chewy, slightly sour crumb and rustic, flavorful crust. The baguette is formidable; certainly the best I've had anywhere in NY so far. We came here on a very cold December Sunday morning at 9 am, and this place is already full (a sign of popularity). The croissant are amazing with very crusty outside and buttery inner layers. My latte wasn't bad at all, except it took a while for them to make it. I need to try their breads next time. If my judgment on their look is accurate, they should taste like heaven! Although on our way to dinner, my friend and I were stopped mid-step by the floating aroma of beautiful, warm, baked butter. Even with a full meal waiting, there was no hesitation to investigate further. The small space was incredibly charming with lovely French jams and flavored salts, and, of course, fantastic looking breads and pastries. While tempted to take on a full pre-dinner baguette by myself, I better decided on the Pain au Chocolat. It was warm out of the oven and flakey and delicious. The chocolate was just rich enough and just sweet enough, perfect. I would never pass this place up if serendipitous fate brings me here again at the time of fresh oven pull out. And while the the wait was a little slow, the staff was kind. The young father behind me ordering a pastry for his adorable son in fluent French was also a plus. read more

Hairs (not hair, hairs!) in my croissant. I bought and almond croissant and their were two hairs in it. The girl behind the counter was equally horrified and refunded my money right away, which I apprciated. However when I heard her talking to one of the bakers, they acted like it was no big deal, or worse, that they were not surprise. The bread is amazing - the only issue - the loaves are too damn big! :) So many of us live alone or in couples and since the bread should be eaten soon after purchase and I, for one, would love to see some non-Coscto sized loaves. Maybe this is how it was done 100 years ago? Maybe it's needed for the right crust to bread ratio? I'm not sure. I froze 2/3 of the half loaf I bought, and it worked but would love to see some smaller loaves. Service was ok - not overly friendly like at Breads Bakery Union Square. It felt a little, "our bread is holier than thou and we will deign to let you buy it." So - up your game and smile and greet people with sincere welcomes and bake us single folks a loaf with lots of seeds, nuts, grains and a crunchy crust with soft inside and... 5 STARS baby. :) In the meantime, thanks for the best "country artisinal style" bread I've found in NYC. read more

He frequents this cafe and usually buys a loaf of bread a week. Walking in there are 4 tables for two (or one if you're working with a laptop) by the window and 4 more lined against the brick wall opposite the bread/cashier. They also have patio seating in the back but it was chillier than we thought for a summer day so we didn't sit out there. I got a soy latte and it was good. My friend got a coffee and a pan au chocolate - no complaints. They also have some cute desserts that I didn't try but they looked good! Besides breads by the loaf, they sell a range of small rolls such as saffron, chive and olive and have amazing croissants - like goat cheese and artichoke. Horrendous prices. Lukewarm 'hot' chocolate that cools within minutes. Pastries with a gummy, rubbery supermarket texture rather than delicious buttery flakiness one expects from quality croissants (e.g. Balthazar, Patisserie Claude, Ceci-Cela). But I kinda liked Bien Cuit anyway and will try it again. The cafe is light with a big window facing Smith Street. There are only about seven 2-person tables so it feels spacious. The staff tried hard to be welcoming and friendly. The goods are displayed appetizingly. The warm white chocolate with orange blossom drink was tasty, but stay away if you associate that fragrance with grandmotherly toiletries. In addition to a standard hot chocolate there is also a vegan/bourbon option. I won't buy their tarts again due to the price. The crisp dry cookie shell may be traditional but it's bland. My tart then had pale pistachio goop which wasn't as flavorful as marzipan and unfortunately didn't moisten the dry cookie. The chocolate mousse, rich topping and brandied cherries were tasty but not for $8. read more

I like the interior just as much as I like the coffee/pastries here :) Wooden floorboards and minimal furnishings are my thing, and mingled with the smell of freshly baked goods and coffee is the perfect combination! This review is for service and attitude only--I never got to the bread. On an empty Saturday morning I walked ¾ mile to Bien Cuit to buy half a loaf of their miche sourdough. The door was open, entry blocked by a table loaded with bags to be picked up by customers who had ordered online in advance. The two staff members told me that I could not buy bread, since I hadn't ordered, and that one had to register online to do this. There was no one else waiting. So they could have said, "We'll register you now, no problem. What would you like?" But they didn't. they didn't say "We only have enough bread to fill the orders already placed. Nice ambiance for a French-feeling cafe. The cappuccino I had tasted watery and lacking coffee strength. The maple yam danish I ordered was delicious, but pricey at $3.75. For the cappuccino at $3.50, I could have gone to Starbucks, which is a last resort when I'm in this "chic-wannabe" neighborhood. I like to stop by this shop when I can on the weekends to grab a petit pain. I love their petit pains! I've had the pugliese and the raisin walnut, which were both quite flavorful. I've also tried the ham and brie croissant which I really enjoyed! Buttery and savory goodness! This place is perfect to grab a little snack! Although it can get a bit pricey, I stick to the small stuff, which is fancy enough for me! Love love love...did I say LOVE? The best baguettes in the borough hands down! I really like that they have a basket of mini bits of their different breads by the register. It has allowed us to try several of their other items including Raisin Walnut - dense, chewy and not too sweet and the Campange - yummiest sourdough! Also, a bite of their Miche was like being back at Poilane Bakery in Paris. It's just sooo good. The croissant are consistently good as well. Other french bakeries have good days and bad days with their croissant, but Bien Cuits are always amazing. Adorable cozy seating area. Although you'd have to get there early to get one. We stopped by this place because it looked really pretty from outside. Inside has he counter with some tables for people to sit, but the aroma around the place was very good. We ordered an iced latte with chocolate chai pastry. Even though pastry wasn't as soft as he other one I tried right next to it, it had full of flavor and the balance between chocolate and chai was well executed. Best croissant I've ever had, even in Paris. Bien Cuit is aggressively marketing itself as a destination bakery - and has even put out out a cookbook - so my hopes might have been too high. We tried two eclairs today - one was sickeningly sweet and the other was great in concept (pistachio), but the filling was runny and it had refrigerator flavor! That's certainly not as advertised. On both our weekend visits there wasn't a line but we still we couldn't get seats (and there seemed to be little chance of it), despite waiting for 15 minutes, because Bien Cuit is at heart a cafe where people camp for hours with their laptops. Which would be fine enough if we lived just a few blocks away and could pop in and out with our purchases. However, I won't be making Bien Cuit a pastry destination in the future on weekends unless I just happen to be passing through Boerum Hill on my way home. read more
