So there is nothing "spectacular on the menu" that I absolutely just crave. However the combination of the friendliness of the staff, and their willingness to accommodate any request is what sets this deli above the rest. Before we go too deep here are the basics: 1) Location: Great Location 2) Times: Do Jewish people not eat after 7 during the week or 4 on Sunday's ? I find the times a bit odd. 3.) The interior : modern casual and well spaced 4.) The exterior: there is much more potential that could be done with a side walk cafe. But ..meh The Staff: Absolutely wonderful people. Another great creation by the sandwich masters at Biderman's, The Clevelander. Mounds of pastrami, house made coleslaw, cheese, in between one of the best toasted Jewish Rye bread ever! I'm not gonna lie, most toasted or grilled rye bread tears apart the top of my mouth, but the way Biderman's makes their bread and grills it is outstanding. I grabbed a bag of Zaps and enjoyed their ice tea. Only downside is this original location is popular and packed during the lunch hour. Where to start? First, got "too busy" so they did away with curbside. They can bring an order out front to the seating area but not another eight feet to someones car. Second, one phone number has been disconnected for months but is still on their Web site. Another number that's listed gives a "this message may be recorded for training purposes", rings twice and hangs up. Third, Web site needs overhaul and update. Says they're open daily from 8-4. Tried to order online on a Monday a couple of months ago and after filling in order got a "store closed" message. As of today, if you want to place a pickup order on Far West in Austin the only choice you get are the two Houston stores and it shows both of them to be offline. There is no way to contact anyone at the Far West location. The pastrami is also really good, but it seems everything is sliced just a little too thick. It's difficult to bite through so it can become pretty messy. However both times, they brought my food out after a very long wait, over half an hour to make a sandwich. In fact, everyone else's food came out quickly both times but I was kept waiting and had to ask the employees where the food was, because everyone else had already finished their food. Like OLD refrigerated chicken salad was used to make the sandwich. Now for the worst of all - the Pastrami sandwich. Meet tasted like it was old and warmed on a dirty grill top. Just plain nasty. Dry. Had to ask for some russian dressing and horseradish sauce. That didn't help in the least and I just finally gave up and let it join the other sandwich in the trash. I would encourage anyone with an understanding of Jewish Deli food from a east or west coast perspective and experience to come to Austin and establish themselves in business - you will be overtaken with business from appreciative patrons. Not impressed. People keep recommending this place so I tried it out. Walked in and someone behind me was served first - he was standing at the bagel counter. I tried to order the Clevelander but only wanted 1/2 and you can't order a 1/2 sandwich that has melted cheese on it. That's a shame. Had to get the chicken salad instead. If you go back 30 years, bagels were an exclusively Jewish thing. You'd find them in New York, and mostly only in Jewish neighborhoods. With chains like Brueggers and others they are now of course completely mainstream. This used to be our favorite spot and we went here on weekly bases but the last few times it has been pretty bad but today it just took the price. Waited almost 40 minutes for a bagel with cream cheese and lox and had it literally thrown at a table with major attitude from the server cause we asked 6 times where the bagel was. With the party of four, the three of us finish 20 min before the bagel arrived. Overall the quality of food is so down, you now get about 1/4 of the meat and wait ups 30 min to get it. This place is awful. I ordered a matzoh ball soup and bagel. Nothing on the bagel, not even sliced. Just a bagel. I was charged $4.75 for the bagel. Ridiculous. After complaining about the charge, it was reduced to $2.50. The bagels are not freshly made and it shows. The soup had nothing in it but broth and a matzoh ball. No celery, no carrots, no spices as shown in their picture online. Nothing. The soup was $5.95 and the broth was filled up half way. Don't waste your money or time here. Fantastic sandwiches! Being a Texan girl pastrami or corned beef on rye are not typical deli fare for me and I was delighted with these. This is the kind of review where I'd like to divide the rating into several parts: 5* Cheesecake! I'm a huge fan of New York style cheesecake, and they offer it here in spades! They only had like 4-5 slices left at 1:30pm on a weekday, so I guess you'd better get here early. Downside: no fresh fruit or compotes available for toppings. I had to make another stop at H-E-B for some fresh blackberries :) 3* Matzo Ball Soup. The chicken broth is obviously real, from scratch, but the downside of that is that the broth may sometimes lack that punch of chicken flavor. The cup I got kind of skated the edge...I would have liked a bit more punch. I also personally prefer soups with some carrot, onion, etc., but this version was a clear broth that didn't contain any. The matzo ball itself was large and of good consistency, but it needed more cowbell...I mean, broth. 4* Deviled Eggs. I suspect some cream cheese added to the yolks; maybe a bit of their special mustard? Overall a bit different, but a good rendition of an old favorite. 5* Everything Bagels with 5* Chive Shmear (flavored cream cheese spread). The bagel I had double-toasted, and it was perfectly crunchy on the outside with plenty of "everything" seeds, and then had a great chew. It paired really well with the Chive Shmear, which had good-sized pieces of green onion and was very tasty. Oh, and I got the last Everything Bagel of the day. 2* Atmosphere. Small, with tables crowded together; counter-service. When you first walk in you're faced with high glass display cases with a variety of bagels, so you're not too sure where to go. Will someone seat you? Do you go to the register? Order over deli displays of egg and chicken salads? 5* Courtesy, Helpfulness, and Service. Once you've figured out how to place an order, they are more than willing to answer your questions and create an order to your liking. Once you get used to the small counter-service set-up, it's a great place for breakfast bagels with egg or lox, soups (4 + kinds), potato latkes, sandwiches piled high with deli sliced meats on or off bagels, kugel and cheesecake, even hamburgers and grilled cheeses with sweet potato fries! I only wish that Austin still had a full service Jewish delicatessen with stuffed cabbage rolls in tomato sauce, hot roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, meatloaf, borscht, kreplach, sweet & sour cabbage soup, giant slices of cake along with great New York Cheesecake...now I'm just making myself hungry! read more
