Nervous Charlie's is some of the best bagels you'll find in North Austin. You order on a screen at the counter but the staff is usually standing by and happy to help you. They offer all classic bagels (sesame, everything, pumpernickel, plain, etc.) with several cream cheese options and bagel sandwiches too. Spring 2026 they have a seasonal dill pickle cream cheese is incredible! I wish it was a permanent option. Service was pretty quick. They brought the order to my table. The place has outdoor seating, although it's right on Lamar so you have to contend with street traffic. During the pandemic, you had to order well in advance, but now on weekdays, you can usually walk in and get your order quickly. Weekends might require a little planning for a larger order. They don't have a great coffee program. They offer light and dark roasts, no espresso drinks or decaf. But I still think they deliver a great, no-frills bagel shop. read more

Nervous Charlie's Bagels was the exact kind of breakfast win I needed! Hearty and filling and customizable to my liking/needs! I ordered The Classic on a garlic bagel with bacon, scallion cream cheese, and avocado, and it was stacked. The bagel had real authentic and fresh garlic flavor, the cream cheese was THICK and the amount of cream cheese that I personally love was on the sandwich, the egg was cooked just right, and the avocado was fully ripe with no dark spots at all. It's messy but worth it, so grab napkins and plan to enjoy! Also appreciated the online ordering setup and ease. Everything was clearly labeled, wrapped up tight in foil, and it traveled well without turning into a soggy situation. Important with bread! Bagels and finding good ones have been something I picked up when I lived in NYC, even going so far as packing a dozen of them whenever I re-visit the Big Apple and bringing them back with me to wherever I call home at the time. Since I've come to Austin I was looking for a bagel place to fill the gap and Nervous Charlie's was the first place I went to, mostly because it was closest to my office. I liked the vibe of the place-kind of like a coffee shop and a busy burger place. I ended up ordering one of their lunch bagels, The Empire and while it was pretty tasty, I thought the sandwich was undersized, both the bagel and the fillings itself. I debated ordering another one and my co-workers (rightly) said I should if I'm not quite full. My boyfriend and I came in a Saturday morning and ordered a Longhorn breakfast sandwich with a protein choice of sausage on a garlic bagel. We asked them to cut it in half since we were sharing it. My boyfriend also ordered a coffee, which they were okay with him filling his own Yeti mug that he brought with. While Nervous Charlie's isn't bad, by any means, I think my expectations were so high that it became a letdown when I did finally try it. I love love love new York style bagels, so I came in thinking of a thick, warm, doughy bagel with a nice chew. And a discernable crust. And while the bagels here are definitely better than grocery store quality, it didn't hit the same. Also, this part is completely on me. I had no idea what a salt bagel was. And I pray that you look up what it is before you order it. I thought, sure salt bagel, it'll be like a pretzel that sounds delicious. But the bagel is like COATED in huge salt crystals and it's sooo salty. Like my tongue was lowkey burning and I had to scrape practically all of it off. So just beware of what you order with it. I think usually, if you order a salt bagel, you just get it with something fatty like lox or a lottt of cream cheese to cut it down. But yeah, I was shocked. Anyways the tree hugger is pretty good. The toppings all taste really fresh. And I like that you can choose what kind of cream cheese you want. I got the honey walnut, which was really good. But I don't think it was mixed in very well, because I definitely got some chunks of just plain cream cheese. The empire was okay. The dressing was a lot more mayo-y than I expected. Funny story about this place, I would always drive past and thought it was a pet shop. It wasn't until recently when my partner and I went for a walk that we realized it was a quintessential bagel shop. Both of us being from the NorthEast was compelled to stop and eat. Boom! Finally a place that really gets it right! This is how a Jersey bagel should be done! I read they get the dough (w/ the water) flown in from NYC (jersey bagels are better but NYC can still be commendable). I opened the wrapped on my bacon egg and cheese and was like...okay, okay.. and then once I took one bite I knew. They did it right. Some pros and cons of this bagel shop. I liked that they have seasonal items. I got a BLT and added jalapeño popper cream cheese. But the kiosk order format was slightly confusing. The sandwich was tasty although a bit small, and the bagel wasn't toasted. Is that an add-on? I like that they gave sun dried tomato bagels. Back here to discuss Nervous Charlie's Bagels because let's be fair, one visit is not always the best way to review. Consistency is key and overall Nervous Charlie's is consistently a packed house, but inconsistent with quality. All my bagels have been a hit or miss. I have gone a total of 4 times now, first time it was stellar, and well the other two times it was a shipwreck. Is that's why I'm giving it a three, not necessarily let's unpack these bagels. For their breakfast sandwiches, the longhorn is good, if they do it right. For lunch, the Big apple sounds good, but is a very cold sandwich and not at all what I was expecting. What do I mean by this take? The longhorn everything bagel : It was pretty good the first time I had it, warm, well cooked eggs, bacon, and potatoes. The second time, however, my potatoes were hard, and my assumption is they were not cooked thoroughly. The Big apple everything bagel: is simple and overall I would think it was delicious, but it was a very cold sandwich, the second time. I am unsure if someone forgot or what happened, but the first time I ordered the big apple my bagel was warm, the Brie was warm and what gave my bagel sandwich a perfect balance was the fact that it was loaded with cold turkey and green apples. Second time, however, not at all what I was expecting. The bagel itself was sloppy put together, and no part of it was warm. I could have went to the store and threw all these ingredients together, along with actually having a warm/toasted bagel. Now I will like to add, I forewarn, that if you do decide to pickup a bagel yourself, consider the time you go. Anyone can expect long wait times for a packed place, that's understandable. What's not understandable is why they stack bags of bagels at the counter for carry-out but then only once there's a few orders do they begin calling customers. Based on when my bag hit the counter to when my name was called and the same bag was lifted, it was a solid 15 minutes. Overall, Nervous Charlie's bagels are truly overhyped. You may not get quality ingredients, but if you're looking for quality service and a well cooked bagel, I would recommend visiting a reputable chain like Einstein's. read more

Hey so this place is pretty good but wasn't like *life changing* hence why it's getting 4 stars. To be fair I'm biased because I really wish they had a chocolate chip cream cheese, that shit would slap on the French toast bagel. I got a salted bagel with veggie cream cheese. It was good, the bagel was hella salty which I heavy fw. The cream cheese was good but the veg wasn't super prominent/didn't contribue a whole lot in mi opinion. My friend got the longhorn. She rated it a 7.6/10, it was just kinda mushy and the potatos didn't have flavor but she said the Charlie's sauce was bomb, and the bagel itself was the best part. We chilled on the patio and it was nice once we secured the table that was most shaded. If I were to come back, I would def order ahead to pick up since the wait was about 30 min at 10am on a Monday (Labor Day to be fair). I recently had a hankering for bagels. Having never been to a bagel shop in Austin, I selected two bagel establishments to obtain mixed bakers dozens from in order to compare. The two establishments were Nervous Charlie's on Lamar, and Rosen's on Burnet. For Nervous Charlie's, I ordered a mixed bakers dozen along with a container of their spicy arbol and pequin pepper cream cheese online (via Toast) for pickup. Pick up was quite easy. When you arrive at the strip mall, there will be an orange tent erected between the employee entrance and customer entrance. Go to the tent and wait by the pickup window. The window will open and you can tell them about your pickup order. The order came in a large brown paper bag with their logo stamped on the side. The cream cheese was tossed in with the bagels. Thoughts on their bagels: The bagels smelled quite nice in the bag. However, the fragrance did not transfer to the taste of the bagels themselves. If eaten alone, their bagels are quite flavorless and bland. They remind me more of something like a white bread, lacking chew. They are quite soft and not particularly large, and they are pretty airy. This means you can slice them in half and use the halves as the top and bottom of a bagel sandwich. They are bagels designed to be eaten with toppings or spreads like cream cheese since flavor from their bagels are quite absent. For example, their multigrain everything bagel was bland, bread-like, and had no chew. The everything seasoning did not add any flavor. The bagel was seasoned only on the top side; the bottom had no seasoning. However, the interior of had various seeds. Their regular everything bagel had similar texture and lack of flavor. It had no chew. However, if eaten with something else, the bagels to perform their function quite fine: they go into the background and allow the filling to star. I don't find this to be a good thing unless I want a bagel sandwich. Their jalapeño cheddar had some jalapeño flavor, but zero spicy kick. The poppy seed and sesame bagels are as forgettable as their everything bagels, and similarly coated only with seeds on the topside and not the bottom. I enjoyed their pumpernickel more than the others, but the flavor was quite faint. I found their sweet bagels of French toast and cinnamon raisin to be just a wee bit more interesting. Their salt bagel was excessively salty--like sticking a small spoon of salt in your mouth. If you like bread excessively salted, you'd enjoy the salt bagel. Also, their spicy arbol and pequin pepper cream cheese hard very mild and minimal spice, and it tasted more like cream cheese, rather than a flavored cream cheese. Final Bagel thoughts: Their bland bagels (except for their salt bagel) are a reasonably good platform for bagel sandwiches. They are small, airy bagels. If seasoned or flavored, don't expect to taste much of anything (except for the salt in the salt bagel). Chew is almost nonexistent. Bagels will be coated only on the top side. No seasoning exists on the bottom. They offer some multigrain options. Their bagels do freeze and reheat well. However, I wouldn't reorder a mixed bakers dozen from here. It seems that folks are happier ordering bagels sandwiches from this establishment. If you want tastier and more flavorful bagels that have more chew, there are better options for that objective. If you want a less chewy and bland bagel, this place fits the bill. read more

If you want to order basic bagels and coffee, you can do that with the tablets. Otherwise, you'll need to order at the register. We got the Espanola and Barton Springs. You can choose the type of bagel you want-there are so many options! It is quite expensive-more than $10 per bagel. Espanola is really great-love the warm cheese and egg combo. Perfect for breakfast.
