Bicycle roots is a quirky, friendly, reliable, knowledgeable and honest bike shop. I personally have bought 2 bikes there. I balked at the suggested price of the first one, a Surly LHT, but after riding it for my daily commute loaded with gear (which they helped me plan out how to carry) I knew I had made the right choice based on the words of wisdom of Joe and Nechama, the owners. I was originally in love with a Yuba which would have been cute but the Surly was so much more badass! Sadly, that bike got stolen from my hallway a few months later. My second bike, as suggested by the crew, was a Specialized that gets the job done but it isn't nearly as amazeballs comfy. I wish I could have afforded a replacement Surly. *sniff* It was the best of lesser evils. Joe breaks my heart every time he suggests I just get a new bike. He makes up for it though when he brings his rabbit to the shop and lets me luv up on the bunny. What has been amazing is their repair service. I am not the most careful with my ride nor the most careful with my gears. They provide free? lifetime service for bikes they have sold, and have provided numerous adjustments for things that most other shops would charge for that were definitely messed up by me. They don't nickle and dime me. I always expect to get charged for bunches of things but I don't. They were even kind to my ego when, after owning this bike for like a year, they had to school me on changing gears because we realized I had been crossing my chain. Ooops. They only berate me when I ask for it. :P They are also professional to those who come into the store to be annoying or panhandling, and I've never seen them pressure someone to buy a bike. They inform and let you make your own decisions. I also referred a coworker there last year who also bought bikes for her n hubby. She TREKKED all the way from SUPER OUT THERE QUEENS to buy there because she liked the thorough help she received over the phone when I suggested she try them out and she sang their praises after her experience. read more

I have never felt so good about going into a bike store, these ladies (and gents) seriously know their stuff. I learned so much in a mere few minutes. They checked out my posture and riding ergonomics on my current bike for free and made intelligent suggestions on how to improve my riding experience. They did a fine job replacing my breaks, but were generally a little standoffish when I asked about some basic maintenance questions. They also erroneously suggested that it would be impossible to find replacement pads for my vintage calipers. I should have asked for the breaks back, but it also would have been ideal for them to ask me if I wanted to hold onto them. This place will do if you're totally hands off with your bike maintenance and just want a place to make things work, but if you're interested in anything more out of a bike shop, there are better spots. read more

I've had nothing but a great experience at Bicycle Roots! When my seat got stolen a few months ago they helped me pick out a new one and offered to secure it with the inner tube trick. I haven't had a problem since. Nechama recently helped me to get some cold weather gear for my commute by showing me all they had to offer (including great sales) but wasn't pushy AT ALL! Love this place. Great layout. Plenty of places to park your bike. Fair prices. I bought some accessories and new pedals for my bike. They were amazingly helpful for everything. The pedals broke after a couple weeks of use and they were more than happy to replace them. They appear to have a great warranty policy and since they register you into their computer system I was able to just walk in. What I love most is that clearly their entire staff is committed to providing great service. Everyone there really cares about their customers and especially their appearance on Yelp. I've never met a company that cared so much about their image and it's nice to know they'll do their best to serve you. read more

I decided enough was enough and went in to talk to them about the perfect bike. Nogga (I believe that's how his name is spelt) helped me out and he was amazing! I agree with the chorus singing Bicycle Roots' praises. Nechama, the kind and knowledgeable owner, asked me questions until she knew exactly what I needed. Then, over the course of an afternoon, I was given three test rides (and could have taken more if I wanted to.) In the meantime, Nechama and the rest of the staff were patient and helpful with my wife and almost 2 year old baby daughter....even though the little one was playing with drawers and accessories all over the shop. When I settled on a Specialized Globe Daily 2, the bike was special ordered for me and arrived within a week. It is so beautiful, and rides like a dream. They've since done some solid work in putting on accessories and providing complimentary tune-ups. Great bike shop! The selection is not as prolific as other shops, but what this shop lacks in variety, it makes up for in customer service. The attendant that helped me was Joe. He helped me get a bike that I was looking for and even answered many of my annoying questions. I was able to add custom bars to my bike, bullhorn, and the mechanic made sure that I had the perfect fit. I've brought my bike to Bicycle Roots several times over the past couple years for minor issues (sticky brakes, wheel alignment slightly off), and each time the mechanics have been friendly and fixed my bike for free, even though I expected (and was fine) to pay a fee. This spring, I took my bike to them for a larger overhaul (including an overall tune-up, new tires/tubes, new brake shoes, etc), and they were so helpful. Sam talked me through all my options for more and less costly solutions, and when I picked up my bike (which was ready within the time frame they gave me for it), it rode like a dream. Those of us who bike in Brooklyn have several good bike shops to choose from, whether we commute, do laps in Prospect Park, or are part of bike clubs. And, since we're a community, word spreads about those that are especially helpful...or not. Personally, I use Excelsior on Franklin Ave or 9th Street, Brooklyn Bike on Vanderbilt Ave, or Bicycle Habitat on 5th Ave. Despite the existing choices, I was pleased to see Bicycle Roots pop up on Nostrand Avenue. Many us us were aware of, and had contributed to their crowdfunding effort to help their recent move effort. I stopped in recently and expressed my desire to see them succeed, and with the intent to purchase a few electronic bits. The items were not in stock, and even though there were available online, I purchased them thru Bicycle Roots. A week later I picked them up and brought my bike, thinking I'd take the 10 minutes or so to have them installed. Rather than being offered the usual gratis courtesy, "can we put those on for you", I was offered the chance to pay for $15 installation. Hmnn, I thought. Should have purchased these bits from another shop, or purchased directly from an online source. I did mention that I thought installation would be free, but I was met with a blank stare. I declined, but made a mental note of Strike 1 for engaged customer service at Bicycle Roots. I hope they succeed at their Nostrand Avenue, but now I can't think of a reason why I'd pass up my tried and true bike shops for them. read more

Needed to get my bike serviced and so I called 2 bike shops, one in Flatbush near Prospect Park and another in Ft. Greene. The one in Flatbush was cheap but curt and extremely rude. The one in Ft. Greene was great but too far from me. On an Internet search, I discovered that Bicycle Roots was fairly close to me (15 minute walk, since my bike was wonky) and a bit more expensive than the spot in Flatbush my neighbors recommended. I thought I would give it a try. I'm really glad I did. The people there were very polite, helpful and professional. I brought my bike in, they gave it the once over and told me that my bike didn't need a full tune up which ended up saving me some cash. They fixed my flat tire, oiled up my chains and I bought a bell, lights and a new bike lock. I highly recommend this store. Friendly yet professional. It's great to have such a business within walking distance of my house. read more

Rude, incompetent, and overpriced. Avoid if you can. There are better option in the neighborhood with owners and technicians who treat customers like patrons, not annoyances. I like to support neighborhood businesses and I've spent a few hundred dollars here for the past two years. But after today, I'm completely over it. Here are the details: I went in for my web-scheduled 12 pm appointment after paying a $35 upfront non-refundable consultation fee. When I tried to check in, I was treated disrespectfully at the door by the mechanic who was standing outside. Then I was treated rudely on the phone while "checking in" as told. I eventually told the phone attendant that they could keep the $35 fee and that I would be taking my business elsewhere from now on. Bicycle roots? they seem more like bicycle parasites to me. I went to get my first bike and the girl that helped me completely tried to take advantage of the fact that I knew nothing about bikes / bike locks. First off, the bikes at this store are stripped to the bare minimum (they even take the reflectors off so that you have to buy them separately). Then she tried to tell me that I needed to buy two u-locks (one small and one large), a chain, pinhead locks for my seat & wheels and rechargeable LED lights. I went to two other stores and ended up buying my bike at an honest store in Williamsburg (where all accessories are 10% off when you buy your bike with them and you get 2 free tune ups). The store I ended up at informed me that if you have pinhead locks on your wheels, you only really need to secure your frame (with one small u-lock). Then they secured my bike seat to my frame for free with extra bike parts they had in the store. Almost spent an extra $300 at Bicycle Roots for unnecessary parts! Glad I dodged that bullet. read more

My girlfriend and I went into Bicycle Roots to get our brakes changed once we discovered how much closer this shop is to our house, rather than the one we've taken a liking too. The atmosphere was nice and so were the people working there. The person at the counter was well informed, although it seemed just a tad bit like they were trying to get us to spend more. That's not the reason I'm giving two stars. I've giving BR two stars because of the price we paid against the quality of what we received. Our brake pads were worn down, so the mechanic offered us some brake pads he made sound rather efficient and wonderful. We winced at the price for all 8 pads and the service needed to change them, but we decided they seemed like they knew what they were doing and we'd be getting what we paid for (plus we're too awkward to say: "How much?! No, thanks!" and walk out--which I guess is our faults.) I digress. So we ended up spending about $75 for what we received, which honestly just sounds like a mark-up in comparison to the quote we got at our regular spot. Which I believe was somewhere in the 15-25 range for each bike. What's more, the brakes aren't that great and BARELY work in the rain. I am a novice after all, but I feel gouged. I think the gentrification moving into crown heights might be really effecting the market. Either way, I don't think we'll be going back to Bicycle Roots. read more

I've had two great experiences here in the past few months. When my seat got stolen a few months ago they helped me pick out a new one and offered to secure it with a chain-in-tube. Then recently I had a simple slow-leak compounded by locking skewers I'd long since lost the key for. They gave me options, and after I was able to loosen the skewers myself, gave me good advice and repair service. I feel welcome and like my bike is in good hands here. read more

Not only was every single member of staff friendly, accommodating and informative but each of them had personality too. They didn't simply want to sell me something but wanted to find something that worked for me. They spent a few hours with me making adjustments to bikes, talking about pros and cons of different styles and then sent me off on a scenic test ride of prospect park. This is my favorite bike shop in the city. They're affordable, the mechanics are knowledgeable, and willing to show you what's going on with your bike. Also, when you go in for service, they make a point to talk to you, and it's never you talking to a register guy who passes the bike off to a mechanic. It's alway you talking to the mechanic about your bike. Tune ups are quick, I've gotten the bike back the same day, unlike other bike shops that can hold onto your ride for much longer. They also have a few different levels of tune ups which makes the service more affordable. read more
