Updating my original 5-star review. I initially had a very positive impression, but after a later service I found that one of the derailleur jockey wheels had been installed backward, and the bike was not properly indexed afterward. The result was a bike that was not rideable, which seriously affected my confidence in the quality of the work. I was also charged about $260 in labor for installing my own tires, wrapping the bars with my own tape, and installing my own chain. Given the result, the overall experience felt hard to justify. I'm disappointed because I expected better attention to detail and a properly functioning bike after service. I won't be returning. read more

While I love to bike, I don't have a bicycle of my own right now. I'm mostly relegated to Citibiking these days. However, my kids are just starting to bike, and when one of theirs breaks down beyond my ability to repair (a low bar), I bring it here. The shop has been here for nearly 50 years, and Tony, the main guy here, has been here for 20. Tony is old school. He's a nice guy (a little gruff, unless you get him talking about his five grandkids), and knows his stuff. He'll take a look at your bike, fill out a form, and tell you to come back when it's done (probably tomorrow, if it isn't too big a fix). When you come back in, he'll have fixed your bike well for a very reasonable price (probably better if you pay in cash). He's also got just about any bike accessory you may need in here. And that's it. That's all you can ask from a bike shop. It's taken me 15 years of living in this neighborhood to come in here, but I'm glad I've got it down the street. read more

I've been bringing my bike here for repairs since 2020 and built a relationship with the owner, so I usually didn't take receipts since he recognized my bike. About 8-9 months ago, I dropped it off for new tires and a tune-up. Due to work and travel, I wasn't able to return for a while. When I came back, the owner claimed the bike wasn't in his possession and even tried to convince me I had left it on the street. He became defensive and angry, blaming me for not contacting him sooner. His reaction, lack of accountability, and refusal to show any empathy made it clear he was hiding something. I have made occasional trips to Atlantic Bicycles over the past decade. I did not purchase my bike there, but I have purchased accessories, and clothing. This is the closest bicycle shop to the Brooklyn Bridge and I would consider this to be an ideal location for a bike shop. Atlantic stocks Bontrager parts and accessories, and does competent repairs as well. The owner has not price gouged due to the increased demand for everything bicycle in NYC. I had a great experience with Atlantic Bicycles! My boyfriend recently got a new bike, which was great except for one issue - the handlebars were stuck too low. The first bike shop I went to told me that the stem was already raised to the max so he would have to replace the entire stem and bars for a quote of $100-150. I felt like that just couldn't be right, so I called Atlantic Bicycles for a second opinion. They told me they had a stem raiser kit for around $50, which they could explain to me. Already feeling like this shop was more invested in doing things the most efficient way (instead of charging me $ to replace everything), I headed over to Atlantic so they could look at the bike in person. At the store, Tony took one look at the bike and realized it was from the '60s so the stem could be raised without a kit. Within literally 1 minute, he had lubricated the stem and raised it to the correct height. He also declined to charge me, but suggested we put some money in the tip jar (we did - $10). He also answered a few questions about my other bike free of charge. As anyone who bikes in Brooklyn knows, a good bike shop is a gem. I'm used to dealing with some amount of rudeness and/or being charged for things I did ask for. Atlantic Bicycles is not that. They are definitely blunt (old Brooklyn vibes), but they are not jerks. They obviously know their stuff and they struck me as extremely honest in my experience with them. I will certainly go back in future. read more

Came here today to get a new tube because I had a flat tire. Owner was very nice and friendly- we made good conversation while he was installing the new tube. The store was empty so he was able to do it in about 3 minutes. Cost $25 which I was ok with since I brought the whole bike not just the wheel. Also nice to support a local business. Ended up here today by accident after having a piece of glass pierce my front tire while crossing the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn. As soon as I walked in, Tony was extremely friendly. He was working on another bike chatting with that customer, told him my problem, he said give him 20 mins and he'll be happy to take look at my tire, go grab a cup of coffee and come back. Came back and he was already working on my bike and we ended up getting into a great conversation while he worked on the bike. Ended up getting some new tires since I was due anyway, but he tightened up some of my spokes and fixed another issue I was having with my back wheel. Couldn't have left there happier. After hearing about Tony from my boyfriend for months, yesterday i met him for the first time. I was utterly impressed at how helpful, direct and reasonable he was. Previous to Atlantic Bicycles, id gone to other shops that needed to order parts and actually also, threw out parts of my bike without my permission; today, it's particularly hard to find bikes, parts and basic honesty, but Tony is all that from the get go. Surprisingly, Tony had the parts, and the tire my bike needed, and he easily, and quickly, replaced it at a competitive rate. I hate doing this but I have to! I came inside, no hello no welcome, the guy is on his cell phone making a wide open eye look at me "what do you want"!? I'm standing there feeling awkward and sorry that I came to your business. I had brand new pedals in my hand and I asked if he can put them on my bike. He replied -"10$!" Nothing else. I brought the bike in, he turned around, still on his cell phone and said, they won't fit and turned around again continued his convo on his cell. I have money, The bike is old and has sentimental value to me, I wanted to make it nice and restore it. I wanted to fix the wheels, tires, pedals, ask you about bearings, stuff that needs to be maintained etc. you just lost a good job because of your rudeness. He went on to say they're backed up and wouldn't be able to do a bar tape install. I walked right out and went to another bike shop. This is some old-school Brooklyn. I was having problems with my pedals after a tune-up, and pulled my bike into this place, since it was near the end of my commute. The guys at the counter proceeded to tell me EVERYTHING that has ever been done to my bike is wrong. Very brusque, very Brooklyn. I just needed it fixed, so I told them I'd come back for it in a week, expecting that's how long it would take. The guy replied, "Oh, I'll call you in 2 hours." Low and behold, in 2 hours, and for a reasonable price, my bike has been given the best repair it's ever received and rides like a dream. This is my favorite bike shop. They may not have the best selection and they may not be the friendliest (if you don't get Brooklyn-ese) but I've come to not trust other bike shops the way I trust these guys. First of all the place is actually called Atlantic Bike Shop but the front of the store simply says "Bicycles". They've been at this location for decades and I like supporting a family business like this instead of some shop that came and opened up in the same neighborhood once biking got to be popular. I had an experience recently where my bike was having a mysterious issue. I went to another bike shop closer to my apartment and the guy had to put my bike up on a rack, take parts off, inspect a bunch of parts, and tell me all the parts and labor I needed. I thought his estimate seemed a little off so I went to Atlantic Bikes. The guy heard what I said, glanced at my bike (for less than 10 seconds) and told me exactly what was wrong and what it would take. Sure the pricing ended up being similar to the last guy's estimate and I didn't get the same 1 on 1 time but the guy at Atlantic knew his stuff and got straight to the point. Since then I wouldn't trust anyone in my neck of the woods the way I do here. read more

Terrible experience. Outside the shop they require to wear a mask or no service. When I walked in the guy/owner was on his phone without mask on - so the question is: how come you require me to wear a mask and you don't wear it? Anyway, before entering I checked if there were any customers since the sign outside also said max 2 customers, luckily for me no customers were inside the shop. Once I was inside I said hello to the guy, he didn't say anything and kept talking on the phone like I was invisible. I waited a few minutes and still nothing, until in the back of the shop I saw a repair guy and I asked him for help, he didn't seem happy to help but at least he listened to me but they didn't have what I was looking for. Then I asked if he could help me fill out my tires, he said I could do it by myself. Didn't even try to offer some help. I left very disappointed. This is a very difficult time for everyone and in my opinion the service should be better than usual to get new customers. I will never come back here. read more

Changing flat tube should be easiest thing to do, even the person who never did it before, should be able to do it in 10 minutes. Not this guy, it took him 35 minutes. Job was finally done and I was happy to leave store on my way home. Happiness didn't last long, after only 13 minutes same tune got flat , unfortunately for me to far away from Atlantic Bicycles to go back again, so am walking on hottest summer day towards home and cursing Atlantic Bicycles. It's the middle of a pandemic and they are still servicing bikes, which is so crucial and incredibly helpful. If you want a Rude, Disrespectful, Judgmental, and Condescending repair, this is your place! I've been riding a bike in New York City for well over a decade so I have had lots of experiences with bike repair shops and the people who work there. I have never ever had anyone yell at me, curse at me, judge me and speak down to me until I met the owner of this shop. I brought my bike there after I had damaged my bike coming from Manhattan and traveling over the Brooklyn Bridge. I have seen this bike spot for years and decided I'd try it out. I walked inside and was greeted with a "yeah." I explained what happened and asked if he could help me and that's where it began. I started asking general questions any customer would/should ask. I asked if he had any idea how this could have happened? He replied "how am I suppose to know, I wasn't there." To which, I said "Obliviously, I know you weren't there but my bike basically fell apart out of no where so I'm confused on why it happened." He said "listen I wasn't there, what do you want me to say?" All I was asking for was your professional opinion. Then, I asked if he had the parts in his shop or did they need to be ordered (since I know nothing about repairing a bike and didn't know the severity of the damage. Plus other bike shops have told me that parts of hard to get right now.) He got very defensive and said "what kind of shop do you think this is, I've been here for 40+ years." I asked him the price since my bike is older and didn't know if it was worth the cost of repair. He yelled at me and told me to go find another shop that will do it for cheaper. At this point I got defensive and questioned his customer service. He then (without a mask) got in my face and started cursing then walked behind the counter and aggressively slammed receipts down and said "my customer service, what do you think of these fucking receipts!" I told him I'd never give him my business and started walking out when another bike rider walked in. The owner asked the incoming person about his customer service and quality of work. The person laughed and said 'don't mind him, he's good. Don't bother getting into it with him.' Because I was pressed for time, not knowing of a bike shop nearby and needing to pick up my child, I went against my better judgement and left my bike to be repaired by him. I will NEVER EVER go back to his shop! Head to Park Slope and go to Dixon's! Great guys, super friendly!!! read more

I love this shop. One of the oldest in Brooklyn. They have staying power for a reason . They know their stuff ,no bull. Fair prices and great mechanics. They will special order and try hard to get you what you want. I've seen them go out of their way to get parts ,even going to other shops to get parts you need. I've seen them throw freebies and not just keep adding and adding to your bill. They give doggie biscuits to your pups ! They are a nice shop.
